Nasty. Place is gross. Dead bugs along window. Bailey (blonde waitress) seemed nice at first, but when my husband finally got a hold of her to say his hash browns were undercooked, she turned Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on us, and refused to correct the tab while passive aggressively telling me to shut up about it. RUDE. Then the employees argued about the tab in front of us. Two waitresses (Bailey and other blonde with short hair) said they would not adjust the price and told the guy at the register no when he said to discount the meal. Not sure who the guy was. I can't believe I've been in Turlock for so many years and completely overlooked this diner. I must have passed by it hundreds of times but it wasn't until today that I tried it out for the first time. Of course, leave it to me to have a friend that moved here recently from the UK to introduce me to a classic american diner. As soon as you walk in its as if you stepped 50 years into the past. It feels like a 50s diner, not like a Mel's or Johnny Rocket's. The employees are really friendly and attentive. The food is A BARGAIN and is incredibly good. Try the Soldier Boy: eggs, potatoes, sausage, and bacon for $4.99! I am definitely eating here again. It now takes the prize for best breakfast place in Turlock. read more

Same story pretty much every time I've been here. Food here is really good. Service, however, sucks. Today, we waited for five minutes without being acknowledged at all by anyone. While we were waiting, we watched a sous- chef wearing a top with long, flowing bell sleeves cook gravy over an open flame. Dangerous and pretty gross. Food is good, with good portions for the price. Kind of mom and pop. Hashbrowns were soggy when we got to the table, nothing too special about the chili and gravy. Burgers are large and pretty good. Service was not great, probably because they are under staffed. Food took long to get to our table. Do not ask for anything special done with your meal (like extra crispy hash browns or to put stuff on the side) because they won't do it. They are also resistant to giving you water, especially if you ordered a mik shake or coffee. read more

Definitely a must stop for anyone driving through or living n Turlock. Clean, great vibe and uber friendly staff. I had a single biscuit with gravy and loved it . The biscuit was HUGE, the gravy was creamy, and they topped it off with fried jalapeno! what more do you want with your coffee?!?! I love that about the local eateries here. They've incorporated a latino vibe due to the large latin population here. As a result, most dishes have a great *kick* and I'm not complaining at all. If you are looking for a great place to have lunch or breakfast, why do to a sticky, inefficient, unresponsive, pathetic chain outlet when you can have something like this? The first time I ate here, the food was AMAZING! I had the most delicious omelette and hash browns. Onions were golden brown, and peppers were crisp and sweet. Delicious! I told everyone I knew how awesome it was. Then I came back, and it's never been that good again. My friends probably think I like mediocre food. I only gave them 2 stars because we had really bad service today. Every other time we've been there it was great! Maybe because it was on a Sunday. The server basically forgot our presence most of our visit. Food was cold, drinks didn't get refilled. She seemed to be more concerned about finishing her closing duties than her customers. They weren't very busy either. Very disappointed in THIS visit. My advice is don't go on the weekends when the boss isn't there. read more

You have to check this place out... fantastic breakfast that's SUPER inexpensive, never had their lunch stuff but it always looks and smells good if you're looking for that classic diner lunch (burgers/fries/sandwiches/whatnot). My boyfriend and I always get the ham and eggs which is delicious and a great value. Waitresses are always soo friendly. Hot Rod Diner is the best! My daughter says she would give this place ten stars if she could, and I would agree. The servers work extremely hard and this place is always packed. The food is consistently great and they have interesting menu items that are all very approachable. I highly recommend the waffles and the omelets here; both are fantastic! Visited Turlock with a friend to look for housing back in 2010 and stopped by here for breakfast. Place was a little bit quiet but we walked as soon as they opened up. The place definitelhy has its charm with what looks like it's run by a young couple. The food was good and the service was prompt and the prices are definitely unbeatable. Where do i start... first off place seemed little run down. My family and i sit down and my wife's drink is flat. She orders a second one and It is also flat. Then we had to wait over 20 minuets to even order our food. Servers walked around us but seemed to focus on the regulars. Wanted to try something local and shunned away from the plague of food chains and wanted to support a local entrepreneur. Called ahead of time and got an accurate wait time of ten minutes!!! Even though the the Sunday Morning hustle and bustle made the place jammed packed!! Ordered the perfect blend of eggs, Pepers, onions, Linguiça, hash browns and a short order of fluffy pancakes with a perfect amount of warm syrup aka THE HOBO SCRAMBLE! It has been a long time since I had exceptional service, professional courtesy, the parking was easy and plenty of room!! I can see this place becoming one of central California's staples... I went there for the first time yesterday. I ordered the big bopper which is a bacon cheeseburger and I got onion rings with it. I also ordered a garden salad. I loved the food. The salad was wonderful and had plenty of produce. The burger was a nice size and very flavorful. The bun it came on was divine. The onion rings were great. I would have given five stars but it took awhile to get our order taken and our food. The servers were absolute dolls! We had a service animal with us and they were incredibly easy and nice about it. I was unable to find the Ceres location on Yelp so I'm leaving my review on the Turlock location. I stopped in there this morning, at Ceres, and ordered the Angel Baby, linguica cheese, eggs and Ortega chile scrambled in a cold mess. I had to dig to the middle of the mass to get something warm to eat, the potatoes cold as well. When I paid my check the waitress wasn't able to make correct change. When I called her on it she still shorted me a nickel. The one Saving Grace, I ordered biscuits and gravy to go for my wife, she tells me they were great, but not as good as Bob's. read more

Hit this place for breakfast on a Sunday, the place was hopping! Good service and quality at a fair price. Definitely a meat-fest, so I went with the short stack of pancakes (shaped like Mickey Mouse to boot) and they were exactly what you would expect from a diner. I lived in turlock for a while now and this place use to have good food dispite the very slow service. The last few times I have been very disappointed. There never seems to be enough staff, there is always several tables that need to be bused. Waitresses are very friendly, but either their stations are to big or they need training. I use to be a trainer for wait staff and they need it! Now with that being said, the food was awful today we had to return the bacon on both of our plates as it was greasy and burn to a crisp. This place is a fantastic greasy spoon. I had the all american breakfast (biscuits and gravy) and it was very good. The gravy needed more sausage in it for my taste..but I just ordered some links on the side. I tasted my friend's corn beef hash and ham and eggs and the corn beef hash was excellent. This place is also really cheap! My only complaint was about the service...it took like 20 minutes longer to get seated then our hostess said, and when we asked our bussboy to clean our table (which was filthy) he just wiped off some spilled jam and walked away. We tried Hot Rod Diner in Turlock this morning. We chose to eat on the outside patio. While it was pleasant, I think next time we'll eat in as we were bothered by a couple of flies. The waitress did take a few minutes longer than I would've liked to get to us but nothing to complain about. It was a Sunday morning and the place was full. She was very attentive after that. I had the Johnny B. Goode corned beef hash, country potatoes and 2 eggs. The corned beef hash was right out of a can, uggg! The country potatoes were sliced potatoes. They were fine, just not what I was expecting. The eggs, ordered over easy came overcooked a bit. My girlfriend had pancakes, bacon, sausage and liked it all. I will give this place another chance next time sitting inside and ordering something different. It seems like a nice place and service was good. read more
