I was going to Monterey for a large conference at the conference center and the two hotels where some of the events were being held were sold out, so I booked a room at the Merritt House Hotel because it is very close to the conference center. It is a fairly nice hotel and the staff that I worked with were very friendly, professional, and accommodating. There are some quirky things about the hotel, such as the unsightly pots of dirt that were next to my hotel room door and at least one other. Another quirky thing is that there were two of us in the room, but only one bottle of water would be left in the small refrigerator by housekeeping. There was a fireplace and matches, but no wood to burn and no information about how to get some. One of the most annoying things about this hotel was that there is a continental breakfast in the morning, but it is not available until 8:00 AM, which is the same time that our meetings started down the street in the conference center or at the two other hotels. Being so close to the conference center I would think the hotel management would want to make accommodations for people who were staying at the hotel for an event at the conference center and start the breakfast at 7:30 or earlier like most every other hotels that offer breakfast. I know several people attending the same conference as I was were staying at the Merritt House and they too would have appreciated breakfast before heading to meetings. The shower's water pressure in the shower was abysmal. What I really liked about the hotel is it is about a two minute walk to the conference center, an eight minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf and just steps away from the downtown. And, even though the breakfast room was closed until 8:00 AM, they do have coffee set up outside before the breakfast service. My bed had a comfortable mattress and I slept very well at this hotel, which I don't normally do when I am away from home. I really liked that my room had French doors that opened up to a balcony with chairs and a small table. Two friends also staying at the Merritt House really enjoyed their stay and plan to stay there again when on vacation as well as conferences. read more

I typically love supporting local businesses but what's advertised on the website vs what you get here is very different. First of all, I want to say that the staff are lovely here. I had no problems with that. We also enjoyed the continental breakfast and the cute dining room. However, the rooms were really dated and rundown. I expected a quaint little bed and breakfast type place based on the photos, but instead it felt like a rundown motel. Our room door was facing the driveway that goes into an outdoor parking garage. There was no table inside the room so they pushed a chair against the nightstand. The water pressure was abysmal in the shower. One of the lights in the bathroom started flickering the first night and then went out. It was the one by the shower so we were basically showering in the dark behind the curtain. All of this I could look past but there was no ventilation whatsoever in the room. You can't keep the patio door open at night because anyone from the street could walk into the room while you're sleeping. It's an open courtyard that leads to the main street. Since there was no AC, we has to rely on a fan, which we didn't discover until the second night. It was hard to sleep because it was so hot, and it was winter! I wish I could have loved this place more. They really need to make some changes though because for the price, you can stay somewhere much nicer. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE. We recently booked two nights through hotels.com and I paid extra to have a premium suite. The room is advertised as having a king bed as well as a sofa bed pullout. When we arrived, we tried to get into the room and the doorknob is about to fall off. Okay, I e brush it off but then as we entered we noticed there was no air ventilation system, and only a small fan to circulate air. We then tried to open any of the four windows in our room and ALL of them are painted or glued shut. The last straw was noticing that the bed was a queen, not a king as advertised. We stayed one of our two nights, but after waking up sneezing and coughing from being in such an old stuffy room with NO air flow, we tried to get refunded for the second night through hotels.com but the hotel would not budge. We just simply didn't feel it was healthy or safe to be in that room. If it was one issue I wouldn't be upset but between the wrong bed, zero air flow and windows that don't open and are a fire hazard.. I am absolutely flabbergasted at the lack of a refund. We ended up staying in a great hotel near cannery row instead for the second night. Regarding the windows: I will now be researching building codes and contacting the city of Monterey if necessary to investigate and fix what needs to be fixed. read more

I was very pleased with our hotel stay. With their being 3 girls, having 2 sink and mirrors in different locations was a plus!!! There was a fan provided in the room, which was wonderful to help us all sleep. I always forget to bring the fan from home and we always use it for white noise at home, so this was a great plus!! Beds were comfortable. We came to see a play at the Forest Ourdoor Theatre, which is only a 2 minute drive from the hotel & and 5 minutes from downtown... very conveniently located! My only 2 complaints was that there was no light to do my computer work in the early morning and no plunger for a toilet with old backed up pipes. There definitely needs to be a lamp provided at the desk/coffee area. I still give this hotel a 5 star review!!!Parking is literally right in front of the door. A super cute hotel, with old style charm. The rooms were very roomy, and clean, and comfortable. I loved the fireplace (they give you a log at the front desk when you check in), and I also loved the decor. The location is super convenient, and within walking distance of the old fisherman's wharf, which has a lot of restaurants, and was decorated for the holidays. They also have a complimentary breakfast in the mornings starting at 8am. Would recommend this place, for sure. read more

Clean, confortable, and convenient. Located in Old Town Monterey, Merritt House Hotel is a lovely find! It's pricey, as are all things here, but it is child-friendly and quiet. The gardens are spectacular. The complementary breakfast includes fresh-baked muffins and other simple fare are served in a lovely nook off the garden - lovely! It is a short walk to the bus and trolley stops. There are a plethora of small business restaurants and serivces in the immediate area. Of course, all of Monterey is within reach from here. The hotel is an historic building and the styles of the room are old school but it was something different that I want to experience. It's a 5-8 min to the pier and 5-15mins to the downtown restaurants. The parking is small, they do give a complimentary breakfast, and there is an ice machine where the parking is. It is a fee parking per night and parking is tight if you have a bigger vehicle. ISSUE: I booked my reservations on Hotels.com but for some reason my reservation didn't show up on their system and it was already paid. The staff were able to give me an upgrade which was nice and I was told by one of the staff that I will not be charge and they will take care of the whole issue with Hotels.com I was told I was only going to be charge for the parking when I gave my credit card info. Then I got a surprise charge on my bank account, I was charge another payment from the Merritt House Hotel. I had to call them to give me clarification of why I was charge and then I am told they refunded it back to me but need to wait 7 business days. I would gave it 4 stars but until I see that refund. read more

Stayed there Dec 21-24 last year. Everything seems to be great at first. Didn't bother letting anyone clean our room since we were only going to stay there for 3 nights. I made sure the 'Privacy Please' plaque is hooked on the knob. But on Dec 23, someone came in and cleaned out our beddings, added new towels and etc. When I came in, the first thing I saw was a round not so light red patch on the carpet in front of the bathroom sink (I have a way of seeing things that usually people don't see when it comes to things) where it wasn't there when we first checked in the first/2nd night. What bothered me was, after a long hike, all I wanted was to be warm in bed, elevating my tired legs. While unfolding the sheets, these 2 red blotches of blood caught my eye. It was so cold in this place (even with the fireplace going) that night 1, I could barely sleep. The door has zero seal around it. You could see right out. The alarm detector began beeping due to the battery. There are no phones in the room so when you walk down to the 'lobby' there's a number to call. Long story short, my husband climbed the ladder (to the very top step I might add) to fix it. Night 2, we had the loudest neighbors and again, no phone to call to complain so not much sleep that night either. When we finally did, the neighbors were up before 8am talking so loud again. No microwave in room either which is a huge inconvenience. Just an all around bad experience and for the price they charged, all they wanted to do was remove the parking fee!! We had never stayed here before, but due to a big event this was one of the only hotels available. The location is downtown and in a great location. The hotel is a historical site with beautiful landscape. Adam from the front lobby was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. Really appreciated him! The parking is very tight and limited so make sure you check in earlier to get a good spot. The rooms are nice, but there is no air flow. There's a small ceiling vent and no other windows. The front doors are French glass doors. We left the doors open for a bit with a fan blowing, but didn't want to sleep with them open so it got really hot. This is the reason for the three stars. Had there been a window we could have opened or AC we would have given this hotel five stars. Due to this, we will probably not stay here again. Made for uncomfortable sleeping. read more

We booked a room here for our 10 year anniversary, from the pictures on the website it looks like it's kinda just outside of town, kinda country. Its not. My fault for not looking up the location and not a deal breaker. That started when we were checking in... they charge $20 a night for parking!?!?!?!!!! WTF???? Our options were to go to a parking garage a block or so away and pay for parking or pay for their parking. So of course we paid their stupid fee to park in a tiny hard to get in and out of parking area. So we got our room key and went looking for our room, found it with the door standing wide open, I think they were trying to air it out... it didn't help it was very musty smelling, the room was nicely furnished in vintage pieces that were mostly comfortable. Bed was ok but for the price of this room I expected more. We splurged on the honeymoon suit and we were very disappointed. The bed sheets felt damp and the towels were very damp feeling, we draped them over chairs to help dry them and air them out. The shower was nice but the flimsy shower curtain did nothing to keep the water in the shower, by the time we were both finished showering the floor was sopping wet. The free breakfast was a joke, stale pastries, cereal, hard boiled eggs and crappy coffee. We walked out and had breakfast somewhere else. I have stayed at nicer hotels for less that also had valet parking. Other then the location this place is NOT worth the almost thousand dollars we paid for two nights. It's somewhat charming I suppose but it is way over priced. Look elsewhere unless you like staying in damp musty smelling overpriced rooms. read more

We checked into a suite in the historic Adobe house. The furniture and decor were cute; however, the smell of mold was so strong it was difficult to breathe. We tried to switch rooms, but none were available. Leslie at the front desk was very friendly and apologetic. She agreed the room smell was very bad. We asked for a refund so we could switch hotels because the room was not habitable given the overpowering stench of MOLD. We explained it was just impossible for us to stay in the room as we were both having a terrible reaction to the smell: coughing and headache. Jason the owner became verbally abusive and refused the refund. it was clear this was not the first time this happened that someone refused to stay in this room. We wished Jason a nice evening and left the establishment. DO NOT STAY HERE. The website claims the rooms were remodeled, but they clearly need MOLD remediation. read more

I stayed at the Merritt house inn October 24th through the 26th. When I used the toilet on the first day it would not flush correctly and it backed up. I complained to the person in charge and supposedly they fixed it. On the second day I used the toilet again and it overflowed everywhere causing a huge mess! It basically ruined my trip because I could not use the toilet! There is also no mirror on the wall above the sink. There's a little one on the counter. Roach motel...with a side of bad attitude. Substitute ants for roaches and you get the idea. Our room appeared to be infested with ants. Told the lady at the front desk (the sister of the owner) and she got angry and defensive that I was bringing this to her attention. By her response, I get the feeling that this is a known problem that many other people have complained about. Her solution was that we find a room in a different establishment. Fair enough, we did. Obviously we didn't want to stay in an infested room at a motel with management that doesn't think infestation is a problem. On the way out she told me that she called the exterminator. Hopefully that means no one else will experience this, but rather than risk waking up with ants in your bed, I suggest you stay somewhere else. read more

The rooms are clean and spacious and the usual ironing board and iron, valet luggage stands, and oh yes, no free parking, you pay $16/night and guess what, free street parking on Sundays. We just wrapped up a quick overnight here and are happy with our experience! First- killer location! It was just a 6 or 7 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf, and the little downtown area is just 2 blocks in that same direction as well. The hotel also has a little family owned convenience store next door, which was great because we stopped and grabbed waters and some snacks (the owners of the store were very nice too!). The hotel itself definitely has a charming feel to it. The front office is small, and in the adjoining room there is a little dining area where we were told they have their continental breakfast, but we didn't check it out at all since we grabbed coffee and breakfast at one of the shops downtown. The room itself was nice- the decor is a little grandmas house, but it's more charming to me than anything. The pictures the hotel has showing the rooms is accurate in the decor, although our room had a nice new big armchair and pretty nice bedding and a nice sized flat screen TV. The doors to all the rooms are those windowed double doors shown in the pictures, which have blinds and sheer drapes for privacy when closed. The bathroom was really nice! As shown in the pictures it was all brand new, and the shower was great. Great water pressure and the hot water was so quick- I can confidently say I think it's easily top 5 bathrooms I've ever had at a hotel (I travel a lot). The toilet and shower are in the bathroom. While a large counter and sink are outside (also looks new). The flooring in that area and the bathroom is all new laminate hardwood flooring, so super nice. The carpet in the bed area also looked and felt really new. My only complaint about the room is the only windows are the double doors into the room, so the room was really stuffy every time we left somewhere and came back. We luckily were the last room at the end of the walkway, so we didn't mind propping the door open to get air flowing, which did the trick. So a fan or something in the room would have been nice for some air flow. The weekend we were in town, it was mid 60s, so there was a breeze that was nice when we had the doors open, but I don't recommend staying here if it's a really hot day because it would be super hot. The parking is also a bit limited, but by my count they seem to have one spot per room. It worked fine for my small Mazda, but if you have a large van or a big truck, I think it would be super tricky and tight for you to park. They also charge $15 per night for parking. The staff was nice, and the bed was pretty comfortable. Overall, we were really happy with our stay and I'll definitely stay again! read more

We escaped from the extreme heat of the Bay Area this Labor Day weekend and my husband made a wise choice when he chose to go Monterey and book this hotel! We were surprised to find out that the Old Fisherman's Wharf was just 0.4 miles away, a 10 minute walk for us. The young receptionist was very friendly and so accommodating which made us feel very welcome. The rooms were big, pleasant and clean. We were on the second floor and I loved the rustic effect of the high wooden ceiling. The wicker furnitures, rattan waste basket and fluffy pillows was an added delight! A breakfast of coffee, cereal, fruits, bread, muffins and yogurt was served from 8-10am. We would definitely be back next time! read more

Walls are thin. You can clearly hear the neighbors conversation. Like zero sound Insulation ZERO. Rooms feel decent other than the extremely thin walls. No view. You don't stay in the house shown in the ad. That only has 3 rooms in it. You stay just above parked cars. It's a completely different experience than the ads. We had booked for 2 nights. In the morning of day 1 we got In the shower and literally got burned. Called the front desk who told us when the housekeeping uses the laundry the water gets hot. Well one would think they would turn it off right away. But they made us wait 39 more minutes. That killed a couple hours of our morning Becuase we had already waited an hour and a half for it to cool Off before we called the office. The office manager, a young girl named Rafaela, agreed to refund us for that night. Fine. Thanks for that. Later the next day we called to ask for a different room for our second night. And Rafaela took us to one that seemed decent. After sitting it it for an hour we realized it was musty like it had water leaks in the walls (this was in the main house in the pictures)(the house with only 3 rooms). They had a de humidifier running in the room But it was still musty. So we called and asked to be transfered out if there. We were told by Taylor, a different worker, that we could leave and they won't charge us and she offer for us to Go back to our old room. The room with the scalding hot water. Fine we thought again. Got back to the old room and my gf started feeling Ill. We didn't know what it was or if the new room with the musty smell had gotten her sick. We decided to leave and left the keys in the room. I called the office and they said that was fine. So come Monday no refund was sent at all. I called the office and spoke to Rafaela who said they would be charging us for the second night even though we didn't stay and even though they told told we could Leave and wouldn't be charged for the weekend. It turns out my gf had Covid and it wasn't necessarily the musty room that had gotten her sick. However the office told us we would But be charged for the weekend. Upper management, above Rafaela told Rafaela not to give us the full refund for the weekend even though other employees had promised it. I wouldnt stay here again Becuase if the thin walls. But also the lack of Integrity is pretty bad. They made us Pay for a night we didn't even stay after offering to let us leave with no charge. They simply wanted to make some money from us. The rooms were $280 a night when we went. I'd recommend finding a hotel with insulation in the walls and one that doesn't burn you with hot water at random. Even if you have to pay a tiny bit more. The hotel is way overpriced. It's priced like a hotel that has insulation in the walls. Also they charge for parking but agreed to give us free parking since the water burned us. The street parking starts ticketing at 9am. read more

I booked a room 8 months in advance, thought this looked like a pretty good deal price-wise. But upon a closer look at the Booking.com details and comparing to the Merritt House Inn website description, Booking.com did not make any mention of air-conditioning, while the actual Merritt House Inn website clearly states, "Make yourself at home in one of the 22 air-conditioned rooms featuring fireplaces." So I sent an email to Merritt House Inn asking if their rooms did in fact have a/c, to which their reply was, "we do not have air conditioning." So good for Booking.com for being accurate, and shame on Merritt House for false advertising. Now, is a/c really necessary in Monterey CA? Sometimes it is not, during cool weather. But sometimes in the middle of summer, and in the case of my reservations mid-July, yes you definitely need a/c for low-mid 80's temps, as these temps near the coast are warmer than the equivalent temps in the Sacramento valley, just like 78° in San Francisco feels as hot as 88° in Sacramento. So be cautious and read the fine details when you make your particular reservations, and of course the Merritt House has NO A/C in their rooms. Final note: I ended up cancelling my reservations for this inn, and instead made one for the Comfort Inn Monterey Bay on North Fremont Street, where we had stayed during summer the previous year, and yes the Comfort Inn DOES have a/c and it did in fact come in handy! read more

My husband and I decided to do a weekend getaway to Monterey and we knew we wanted to stay downtown to avoid driving everywhere. There were a lot of hotels surrounding this area and they were all newer and pricer then this place but I wanted to check out a bed and breakfast type establishment due to having a good experience at a previous one in long beach. In comes this choice. The place overall is very cute and gives off a warm and historic feeling. Each room had its own decoration theme ( more on this later ). We arrived early and decided to see if we can check in earlier then the initial 3pm check in ( we tired from a long drive and wanted a nap!) and the nice lady at the front desk told us our room was ready and we can check in! The room we had chosen was a single King size bed and it had a fireplace! Perfect! It's been cold lately and it would be great for us! The room looked like it belong in a cabin in Tahoe! Everything was fine and we were able to take that 10 min stroll down to fisherman wharf for a early dinner. Unfortunately when we went back to get ready for bed, we found out that the shower was broken! We called housekeeping and the gentlemen checked it out and told us that he has another room for us to move to which was just a few doors down from our current room. No big deal we didn't really unpack and went to the other room, props for a quick fix. Now the room we went to was also a king size bed with a fireplace but this time it gave off an Victorian theme (sorry no pics!) The next morning we woke up around 7am and headed to the common room for breakfast. I have to say I did enjoy the breakfast. They had cereal, croissants, bagels, hard boiled eggs, muffins, Danish pastries. It was my kind of breakfast, I like filling up on carbs for breakfast, my husband however thought it was just ok, I think cause he was looking for meat (bacon, sausage, whatever) but I knew for a continental that they wouldn't have that. Loved this place wish we stayed longer. Totally got our money's worth! We stayed in suite 26. Thought it was funny that the door lock was below our knees. Smelled kind of stuffy but once we opened the doors the smelled cleared up. Felt like I was in a Victorian home because all the furniture was antique looking. The bathroom was nice and roomy. The bedroom was nice and big. Loved that the patio and all its space. We used the fire place and cuddled. Very romantic! The only complaint is that the blinds were broken and didn't shut all the way. Continental breakfast was good. They provided bagels, muffins, fruit, croissants, two types of cereal, boiled eggs and oatmeal. Orange juice and coffee for drinks. read more

A very homey and affordable (for the area) accommodation. They had double-booked our room (due to competing third-party reservations) and so gave us a suite in the historic main house. This is true vintage, with heavy windows, sticky doors, and a musty adobe smell. Part of the charm. Bed was a very comfortable king. Not the place to stay if you want luxurious pampering, but great for an intimate indie hotel/b&b with privacy. We had a gas fireplace but didn't get the chance to use it as it was a warm night. Continental breakfast is more than adequate but is a bit carb-heavy -- muffins, pastry, croissant, bagels, fruit, cereal, yogurt. Good fresh hard-boiled eggs round it out a bit. It's served in the common room near the front desk with OJ and a pot of coffee. On a quieter street in the downtown, easy walking to all downtown amenities, the wharf and beach. read more

This was a fine stay for what I needed. A place to sleep during a wedding weekend. The room was rustic but the location was great. Only a few minutes walk from the warf, lots of good food and tourist stuff. Here are my pros and cons. Pros: great location, great price, Direct TV, clean room and quiet. Cons: old venue, no AC, no ceiling fans, no USB power outlets, no room service, the phone in my room didn't work, and super slow internet...like 1995 slow. If you are doing a quick stay as a couple this place is fine. If you have a family with devices, and late night food needs, it may not be the place for you. Overall I liked my stay but the slow internet was kind of a bummer. read more

Talked to the owner and she said one thing.... talked to the lady working there over the weekend she said something else.... there is a huge difference between comping parking and comping the wedding couples' room..... according to the women working there over the weekend "we are getting clients regardless.. How this place is as expensive as it is is a wonder. First of all, it's so old you're not allowed to open windows. I initially thought this was a fire hazard, but then realized a second exit would be the adjoining door to the next hotel room. Unlike most hotels, these doors are one way: either you're in the room that has access to the lock, in which case you can open the door and walk right into the next guest's space, or you're at the mercy of your neighbor. The beds are rocks--they must be as old as the hotel itself. I was so excited to stay here after a night of camping, but may actually prefer my sleeping bag and pad to the brick I paid too much to sleep on. If the decor isn't enough of a hint as to the age of the building, the smell will certainly give it away. There is shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the bathroom, but none is labeled, leaving you to your best guess. Absolutely not worth the money. read more

Very nice front desk but I do not recommend. Website says it was redone in 2020 but I don't see that other than the bathroom seems updated. I could have dealt with the dated furniture. We were in the Adobe building, courtyard suite. It smelled extremely musty. Extremely. I started to have an allergic reaction within the first few minutes. And it was freezing in there. It sounded like the people upstairs were going to come crashing through the ceiling. I really wanted to like this place and have a quaint inn experience but I would not stay here. the world according to noelle ~2012~ My husband and I stayed in room 20 (which is an corner room, meaning we only had neighbors on one side). Our room was located on the second floor in the buildings in the back of the property. Room 20 has a king bed, a fireplace, skylight, vaulted ceiling, large vanity area, small fridge, television (we didn't watch it though) and a rather large bathroom. The bathroom was definitely dated but very clean. In fact the entire room was clean but had a old/musty smell. The king bed was a four post, the mattress was rather uncomfortable. Oddly enough, the best man who is a smoker had the room next door to us and his smoke was filtering into our room at one point, perhaps due to a poor ventilation system? Also the walls are extremely thin, you can hear people cough/sneeze.Our first night was bad because the mattress was horrible and the best man next door and his friend were having loud sex as if they were on their honeymoon. Can you imagine if you had your children in tow and were subjected to such rudeness. Then again, nobody deserves to be subjected to such loud noise/rudeness. The continental breakfast was decent. They had hard boiled eggs, orange juice, muffins, toast, yogurt, cereal. I had issues with the fact the orange juice was warm and the hard boiled eggs were not kept cold/cool. They were kind enough to give us cold orange juice. Customer service is fantastic- definitely worth five stars. We left our kindle fire charger and they mailed it back promptly. The drawbacks are: parking (very tight and looks like an accident waiting to happen). the uncomfortable mattresses and musty room smell. the large amount of bird poop on the skylight and screen. the paper thin walls and rude neighbors. Oddly enough late and night and through the early morning you can hear birds (seagulls, because we're near the ocean) and street traffic. Just note they don't always answer their main phone line but do call you back if you leave a message. While this place has a lot of potential, the thin walls, uncomfortable beds and bad parking - would make it last on our list of places to stay. read more
