Swung by hotel chocolat on a cold spring day. We got two hot chocolates: hazelnut praline and the raspberry praline. Raspberry praline was great but the hazelnut praline didn't taste that great. They had some tiramisu chocolate samples for us to taste and those were okayish, hence the three stars. I was excited after seeing all the truffle options but the taste isn't justified. The white chocolate matcha tasted like regular matcha and the hot chocolate mint was the best but I've had better. The pastry was ok but kind of hard. Would have been better if they could toast it. We got a sample of hot chocolate and it reminded me of packaged hot chocolate mix. The chocolate pastry/croissant tasted kind of stale and dry, it wasn't buttery or anything. My friend and I also shared a chocolate shot which was way too rich and thick, definitely meant to dip than drink. The best thing I had was a plain iced latte. The iced drinking chocolate is not as good as the hot chocolate in my opinion. I have a velvetizer at home and regularly order chocolate flakes from them. 70% is best in my opinion but there are other decent options, too. Do you need a velvetizer? Prob not but it's a fun splurge. It's like a milk frother but the whisk covers the more surface area. The wall of chocolat was fun to explore and it was difficult to choose just 3. We walked into a large store front with a good amount of seating around the corner. The sales associates were friendly and we tried several different samples. I visited the Lincoln Park location of Hotel Chocolat. From the outside, it looked premium and classy, so I really wanted to give it a try. They specialize in chocolates and had some samplers out when I walked in. The samples were delicious. I ended up buying an assorted chocolate box and loved it so much that I finished it within a couple of days. The server was kind and helped me decide on the box I should get :) Excited to try more, I went back for their drinking chocolate. Unfortunately, it was disappointing. It didn't come close to the quality I've had at Max Brenner or even L.A. Burdick. They also serve ice cream, though I didn't try it this time. My kids and I had just finished our drinks at La Colombe and decided to come in and see what the shop had to offer. Right when you walk in you see the cafe to your left and to the right is all the packaged chocolate. The cafe has drinks you can order as well as baked goods and pastries. As you go in further you see a wall of magnificent chocolate. They have a really great variety and even had the chance to sample a few pieces.
