The nail in the coffin for me was when they unwrapped our cookie and popped it in a microwave. Dropped by this long time standard for the first time today and got some great treats! Tried the ice cream and truffles. Both were delicious! I really appreciated that the truffles were homemade. They were small, but had a ton of flavor. The ice cream was also pretty tasty! Their menu offerings were impressive. Surely, most people can find something to enjoy! The location is truly vintage. I like the antique feel and classic clam shell bowls the ice cream was served in. The shop is small, so be prepared to pack in close. I did notice they have some nice outdoor seating for warmer weather as well. The service was great once we got inside. The staff was helpful and attentive. I also truly appreciate that they tried to help accommodate my senior mother who uses a walker. However, on that note, I would advise caution to people with assistive devices. I understand the location is a landmark and am glad it is there. I would like to see them make accessibility accommodations. There is only one door and it is revolving. We had to try and struggle with my mom's walker to get in. The staff was helpful with the door when we left. I think they would benefit from a bell at the door for people who need help. read more

Absolutely in awe of this place. It's such an old -timey, old fashioned type of dessert parlor. Yes they're known for their iconic ice cream (sundaes, splits, specialties, etc) but they also have tons of other treats you can buy like chocolate covered Oreos, pretzel rods, marshmallows, etc. It is a small place inside so it can get tight and that's probably why there's sometime lines and a wait later in the day, especially on weekends. We got the jumbo turtle sundae which came with caramel, pecans, whipped cream, and their legendary fudge. I figured it was going to be a good sundae, but I did NOT think it would blow me away. This was DANG GOOD!!! Like, miraculously delicious. The fudge is the best thing I've ever tasted, plus they had the best caramel I've ever tried. My friend found this place on instagram and really wanted to stop here during our trip and I'm glad we did. This is an old school candy and ice cream shop that's been open for over 100 years. Not sure if it's all locations or this specific one. It's a very small spot with just a few booths and it's pretty cramped on there. It was so packed with people when we came late at night. We got our names on the wait list and I think it was about 30 minutes before we got seated. As for the speed, I think after we ordered it was less than 10 minutes until we got our ice creams. Now let's be clear the ice cream isn't something to write home about. It's good but not especially creative or standoutish. What I really appreciated though was their portion size and that what we all ordered came with a cream wafer and a little gravy boat(?) of hot fudge. Had we not just had a big dinner and waited so long in between, I'm sure I would have happily finished the whole thing. Always such a nostalgic time at Margie's. Been coming here forever. Now that it's winter there isn't necessarily a line out the door but when I arrive just after 8 PM, the location was full, but it took a few minutes for my table. I ordered a turtle sundae with a side of banana and a wafer. The server was friendly and efficient. Now let's be honest. The portions are just ridiculous. There's no way that I myself could finish the turtle sundae in the giant shell dish that it is served in. There's other classics such as milkshakes, banana splits, and also a full food menu with other diner nostalgic Classics. I always get some candy/chocolate before I leave, which is usually the terrapin/turtles. They always have a decorated for specific holidays. Just a cute little place. Minutes walk from the western blue line stop- across from the McDonald's. So it's about 20 minutes out from the city. So I finally made it to the original Margie's Candies with my lovely wife on a chilly Saturday evening recently. Yes it was cold outside, but it was still a good time for a sundae! I have been DYING to go here and it completely lived up to the hype. There was a line but it moved quickly and we were able to be seated on a busy Saturday night after about 20 minutes. Located in the outskirts of Chicago proper, Yelp directions are on point, but when you get here, the next step is trying to land a parking spot! DOH! So I figure let's do One of Margie's "House Specialties" for the initiation and see what "Jumbo" means here. The server wouldn't divulge what their source of the ice creams are but I did see "James Farms" on one of the ice cream tubs while paying my bill, so definitely a source, but apparently no ice cream is made on site. All the candies are though! For my ice cream flavors, I chose PISTACHIO, NY CHERRY, BUTTER PECAN, and COCONUT. All the flavors were deliciously tasteful, with lots of bits of the associated flavor in every bite. I especially liked the richness of the butter pecan. One of the better butter pecans I've sampled. Whoever their vendor(s) for ice cream(s) is/are, they've chosen excellent options! What hypes this "Turtle" up is the ample amount of homemade caramel poured on top, and a side of homemade hot fudge in a "gravy" tray to allow you to control its delivery. SO GOOD!
