    Broken ceiling and loud vent

This hotel boasts on their website that they are "anything but ordinary", and that this is a place "where the Gilded Age meets modern luxury." Yikes, couldn't be further from the truth! We pulled in and we were promptly greeted by the valet which was nice. We were told that valet is the only option unless we wanted to make an attempt at street parking. There is a huge parking lot surrounding the entire building that the hotel owns and now charges $45 a day for valet parking. They COULD allow guests to park at least one car there for a lower fee or even free, but they don't. The lobby is remodeled and very nice when you first walk in. People were friendly enough at check-in. However, when we started walking to our room, the surroundings and vibe became increasingly abysmal with each step. Walls, decor, and lighting were of very low quality. It was like walking through a seedy motel. To keep things short, we ended up switching rooms three different times because of issues with each of the rooms. This is the first hotel I've ever asked to switch rooms in. The first room had a terribly loud HVAC system, and wet, stained carpet. The second room was no better with the handle of the towel holder completely breaking off, and the sink faucet was very difficult to turn on. The manager on duty finally switched us to our final room, which had a somewhat updated shower, but the rest of the room still resembled the others as far as the look. The overall vibe from this hotel is absolutely anything but luxury. Please look elsewhere or just down the street if you crave the luxurious atmosphere. This place will remind you much more of a motel than a high-quality hotel. The price we paid for our stay was outrageous compared to the service and quality we received. As you check out, they slap on a destination fee for giggles. So be prepared for that. The hotel never offered us anything for our troubles of moving three times. They were also very resistant to offering us an upgrade. It was only after showing them the pictures and disclosing how unhappy we were about our stay where they finally convinced to remove the destination fees to appease us. This hotel left a sour taste in our mouth and will definitely not be back. They claimed that in six months time they will be renovating. Perhaps then they will be worthy of claiming luxury status. Until then, I'd highly recommend you stay away!

Great rooftop bar with awesome views and live music! Stopped by on Friday night and ordered a drink in the lobby, then took the drinks upstairs to the rooftop lounge. Plenty of seating and couch options, ordered some stuffies and oysters. Service was a little slow and our server was in training so a few items did not arrive but overall would love to go back and just get drinks

    Room service! Yum!!!

A peaceful and productive retreat. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The room was cozy and inviting and the food was delicious! Can't wait to return!

We stayed at Hotel Viking on our trip to Rhode Island and it was excellent! The hotel is very old but it has been maintained very well. The service was exceptional, we didn't have to wait too long for any requests. We paid for the car check in service and paid the nightly fee we got a discount since it was for a conference group rate. It was worth it and the service was very quick. Whenever we needed the car it was ready in minutes. They even helped take our luggage to the room and then load the car on our day of check out. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. I just had surgery so I was sensitive to where I sleep but the bed was great and I slept well. We ordered pancakes room service and it was up within 20 minutes. We needed a microwave in the room since we had a baby and needed to warm up things suddenly and they were able to accommodate that. The room had a mini fridge as well. The best part was the view. They have a back area with fire pits that are lit on ale night and nicely decorated with lights. The hotel is really big with many rooms for business meetings and conferences as well as restaurant, coffee shop and bar. It was great because we didn't really need to leave the hotel for to many things, we were able to relax during this business trip weekend.

Came here for an event and these photos include scenes from the Top of Newport bar, located on the roof. Was impressed with the professionalism and helpfulness of all of the staff members. When we came in we were not sure exactly where we were headed & a gentleman from the entry way area helped us find our way. The event we were attending was clearly marked from the elevator onward. The event that we attended had a buffet but it was kept clean and constantly refilled so that none of the food looked as if it had been sitting. That's one of my biggest pet peeves with serve-yourself food but again, it was handled in a very clean manner and this was a large event. We tried the Top of Newport drink made with Tito's vodka. We also enjoyed the sunset views. The ocean is in sight from the comfort of a fireplace ... and we enjoyed good company into the blue sky of the evening!! Thank you so much!

Our stay cost $500/night. We suffered through a rattling a/c unit and a bathroom that was so small you had to squeeze between the toilet and tub to close the door. The tub and tile wall were stained with black lines. The wall above the door had two black stains that looked like mold. Behind the door was stained as well. The door had pieces broken off the bottom and the mirror on the door was peeling. Bathroom pics are attached. In addition, although I have no problem with dog friendly hotels, I draw the line when there are clumps of hair on and around the lobby furniture. All in all, the Hotel Viking has gone down hill quite a bit since the last time we stayed there and we will definitely not be going back again.

This hotel is super cute. The kitchen also puts out some pretty good food, the staff is extremely professional and attentive. They do have elevators, large lobby area and lounges. The rooftop of the hotel has a full bar and can be booked for events! The entrance has ample room to pull up, and valet service. Feels historic and nice and cozy.

Driving from New York to Hotel Viking was interesting. On Monday the weather was foggy, I drove over two bridges with fog as thick as pea soup! The next day, the fog lifted and exposed the beautiful surroundings. Hotel Viking is a 95 year old historic landmark. Once inside, I didn't see anything old. The lobby looked very contemporary with plenty of spaces to sit and enjoy. The coffee bar was a nice touch, I was able to grab a latte before starting my day. The hotel is situated in a spot that's convenient to all the restaurants and shopping. Parking is $20 per day but I found it easer to walk down the hill, everyone visiting Newport is fighting for a parking space. I attended a conference for the week, the hotel was able to support two conference rooms. The temperature was consistent throughout the day. I did like the bathroom on the lower level, it was styled very contemporary. I noticed lots of families, some brought their pets? Nice to see a pet friendly hotel. My room was pretty deluxe with a large king bed. It was very comfortable. The shower had hot water all hours of the day. So why the 4 stars? I had a 5 star experience! The people I traveled with said their room had ants as well as the mini fridge was blowing hot air. My military buddy, his son is graduating OCS in a few weeks. I'm going to return to Newport RI and I would love to return and stay overnight.

This room was so bad I cried for two hours and begged Expedia to help me escape. The hallways also smelled horrible. The hotel eventually agreed to refund the almost $1000 we paid for this dump and I ran as fast as I could to an actual 5 star hotel. Am I a spoiled pretentious princess? Yes. Did this traumatize me into never visiting Newport again? Definitely also yes. I'm grateful they refunded me because if not I would have probably had to report them to my credit card company for fraud.

    Looks nice on the outside.

2 Stars because it looks nice from the outside, as braindead, and at times rude staff permeate this landscape on a perfect corner of Touro and Bellvue Avenues in the heart of Newport. I have been there as a guest a couple times and was in their restaurant and lobby bar a few times this past week. It's a historic place, it looks super nice from the outside, the rooms are remarkably shitty, the towels are shabby the soap comes out of dispensers as if you were at a Holiday Inn in Attleboro Mass. That would all be fine if it was 240.00 a night but it's more like 600.00 a night in the summer on the low side. It's outrageous. But my greatest criticism is for their lobby bar. What should be a bustling world class lobby bar is the exact opposite, where slowpoke bartenders with fucked up attitudes make you feel like they are doing you a favor. Lazy, blasè, and unappreciative of their jobs are the descriptions that come to mind. Each visit: Closed at 8 pm. Come on Viking Hotel! Bar was out of limes. huh? What? Bartender in empty bar is such a slowpoke we walked out. Bartender so stupid he couldn't remember to change the TV to Red Sox V Yankees game. Mind you this is all happening in a sold out hotel with hundreds of rooms. Total embarrassment.

This review is for the rooftop located at the hotel Viking. Rooftop was just okay. Not much of a view (parking lot). We ordered a few drinks which were a little weak but okay. Ordered a cheese platter and the cold cuts looked so bad we had to send it back. They did give us a complimentary shot in plastic wine glasses. They had a live band which was nice since it created a nice vibe. Personally I would go to to the Vanderbilt Rooftop instead. Afterwards we had a few drinks at the bar inside the hotel. Better drinks and faster service.

Great looking historical hotel with very friendly staff and nice decor touches you would expect at a higher end hotel. The gym and pool are excellent if you happen to get stuck inside due to bad weather. The little market downstairs has a nice selection of coffee and breakfast sandwiches. The only cons would be the tiny half sink in our bathroom. It makes getting ready very challenging. The pipes also tend to be loud and the rooms aren't exactly the most soundproof.

Bad repair and dirt at toilet

So disappointed. The setting is beautiful but the hotel is definitely showing signs of neglect. Our room was nice and bedding was good but the bathroom was BAD. Also, our room overlooked the courtyard and that was nice BUT the hotel neglected to tell us there would be a private party in the courtyard and live music until 930pm. I know that might not be that late but it was so LOUD that it made watching TV or sleeping difficult.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews and how beautiful the property looked online, we were genuinely excited to spend a couple of nights here. Unfortunately, for nearly $1,000 per night, the experience fell well short of expectations. At check-in, the concierge seemed completely uninterested. There was no welcome, no overview of the hotel, and no helpful information offered- it genuinely felt like we were inconveniencing her just by being there. We've stayed at other hotels in a similar price range, where the service is consistently warm, attentive, and polished, so this was especially disappointing. The valet was far more welcoming and professional than the front desk. After a short walk around town, we returned to the hotel and weren't acknowledged at all, the concierge kept her head down on her phone. I can appreciate a no-fuss stay where guests aren't overbothered, but for the price point and the fact that this was a special anniversary trip, being completely ignored wasn't what we expected. A simple greeting or acknowledgment would have gone a long way. The hotel itself is very pretty. The furnishings are lovely, and the room was nice and comfortable. The views were nothing particularly special; it appears the ocean-facing side is reserved for a conference space. Still, we did enjoy the room. Like many Newport hotels, valet parking is the only option and comes with a daily fee. The valet team was excellent- friendly, accommodating, and consistent throughout our stay. The restaurant deserves special mention: the staff was outstanding, and the food was excellent. Truly a five-star experience there- would def go back to dine with them. The location is also a positive, close enough to everything without being directly on the busy street. However, overall, we wouldn't choose to stay here again at this price point. Upon checkout, we noticed a charming bar/library space that we didn't even realize was available to guests as no one mentioned it to us during check-in. A beautiful hotel is wonderful, but to be considered luxury, the service needs to match the setting. Unfortunately, that piece was missing for us. If we wanted an experience that anyone could offer, we could have gone anywhere else, for much less.

It's a great spot for a drink especially in the summer time. Our recent visit on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, was not great. Despite it being a warm summer evening around 8 PM on a Wednesday, we were turned away because one person in our party wore a t-shirt instead of a collared shirt. For a midweek outing in August, that felt unnecessarily rigid and to be honest a little too pretentious. Although we can understand enforcing dress codes on weekend nights this seemed out of touch. We ended up at Thames Street Kitchen and Audette instead, both of which did not have strict dress codes. Not only did he call us prior to check in to see if he could assist with anything we would need, he also upgraded us from the small Queen room that we had booked to the spacious Lark Suite, their largest accommodation. The suite had a gas fireplace, soaking tub, and gorgeous seating area with a dining table and several cozy couches and armchairs. We were super grateful for his hospitality, and even when we had a minor issue with the heating system in the room not lowering, Peter assisted us in the morning and generously offered vouchers for a future night stay. Thank you for your attention to detail and hospitality! I also LOVED the fact that the Attwater offers hot items in their included breakfast. We stay at a lot of small bed and breakfasts as stay and vacations, and one can only have so many cranberry muffins or glazed croissants. They did offer morning pastry standbys, but I was delighted to find a warm and delicious Cheddar Hash Brown Egg Bake and Shredded Brussels Slaw with Hard Boiled Eggs among the offerings. It really took the stay to the next level, and as a couple that stays at several B&Bs and small hotels, it did not go unnoticed! We can't wait for our next chance to visit :)

Many lodging options are…read moreinns and B&Bs in colonial buildings, but we were looking for something modern and sleek along the waterfront. (Sorry to be that person!) I loved the location of this hotel and the clean lines of the common spaces and rooms. However the $45 valet parking fee is ridiculous at the end of the season (10/28). Offer a self service option for half that - but, oh, wait, UPP owns the hotel lot too, as well as pretty much all parking in Newport. Certainly there were a lot of hotel amenities missing at this price point as others have mentioned (very small gym, and no coffee makers, no microwave, no mini fridge in room (nor safes), but also the daybed was dusty and the TV lacked options, which may have been ok, but I couldn't even mirror my own device/streaming service to the TV. Ideally you're not in your hotel room when in Newport, but if you're here for work and need some down time, those are all minuses. If you don't plan to spend much time in your room and don't mind paying $45 for parking, this is a decent option for its location.

Exceptional customer service, an excellent location in the middle of Newport's historic waterfront,…read moreand many special touches enhanced our stay. The Mill Street Inn is now our go‑to lodging in Newport. From booking by phone to checking out, the staff was friendly and always available to help with questions. The goodie bag we received upon arrival was a nice touch, and everything inside was Rhode Island-made and delicious. While the bathroom was small, we preferred having the spacious sitting area, which was wonderful for relaxing and enjoying breakfast. We also appreciated the customizable breakfasts (beverage options, fresh bakery items, fruit, and protein choices) delivered to your room at your requested time. The rooms included unexpected but thoughtful touches such as coffee, tea, filtered water, quality toiletries, a magnified mirror, and cotton balls in the bathroom. Yes, the parking is tight and first-come, first-served, but they do offer complimentary parking--a treasured commodity in this part of Newport.

Despite a few mishaps, I had to give this place 4 stars because I would stay here again and again…read moreand again. Here are the things I didn't love. The parking can be rough. If you are not one of the lucky three that gets a spot in the side lot you have to park in the garage and the garage is tight. Tight tight, tighter than tight, as tight as you can get. Put it this way, it took me about 15 minutes to safely pull into a space in absolute fear I was going to hit a pole or the car parked next to me. When it was time to pull out, torture, luckily someone who worked here saw me struggling and he offered to get in and do it for me. Even for him, it took multiple attempts to steer clear of any objects. It's a real pain in the ass I can't sugar coat it. Next negative, the toilet in my room wouldn't flush. That was frustrating and when I told the front desk attendant she wasn't' surprised so this must be a thing. Also, whenever I walked into my bedroom I got a wet sock, there was a leak of some sort I think it may have been coming from the air conditioner unit up above but I can't be too sure. Next negative, the outlets are crappy, anything I plugged in was super loose I really had to jam it in there and that was the case with every outlet, some were unusable because of how loose they were. Lastly, the shower was scalding hot, scalding. I adjusted the temperature but no matter which way I turned it was different levels of scalding. I had to let the shower run for five minutes before I could get in there and I like a hot shower. This temperature was hospital burn status. Okay the real last thing, no elevator. I had to lug up two flights of stairs with my big ass suitcase but is it Mill Street Inn's fault that I packed a weeks worth of stuff for one night or is that a me problem? As I'm mentioning all these negatives I'm wondering if 4 stars is appropriate but I'm sticking with it and I'll tell you why. The room was beautiful and enormous. I stayed in a suite with a dining room table and chairs, a couch, coffee table, multiple arm chairs, huge bed with the most comfortable pillows I have ever experienced in my entire life. Dreamy I tell you, like melting in but not too much, just perfect. The bathroom vanity counter was enormous. I had so much room to put out all of my things, much appreciated. The location could not have been better. One block away from the main street, the easiest walk to everywhere. Also tucked away in a beautiful neighborhood so it was safe, cozy and quiet. I walked back from a night out by myself and felt extremely safe doing so. The lobby is beautiful, they had complimentary sangria and complimentary water with lemons and limes. They had every board game you could imagine, I loved that. There was a fitness center with canned electrolyte infused waters, they had a beautiful roof top which I had entirely to myself both times I went up there. Gorgeous views of the neighborhood and the water. I loved my time up there it was serene and relaxing with tons of tables and chairs for lounging. They had complimentary breakfast served to your door in the morning. The night before you pick and choose what you want from each category and there was plenty to choose from. I ordered an organic cold brew, two hard boiled eggs, granola, and something else, anyways everything came to the door at the exact minute I asked for it to be delivered and it was delicious. Also, they give you a welcome bag with snacks when you arrive! There were pretzels, a massive bag of popcorn and sea salt caramels. I thought that was such a special touch. Anyways, looking back there were a lot of annoyances that could have aggravated me but there were so many good things about my stay that the good overshadowed the bad and I would 100% stay here again.
