We had an outstanding Halloween evening getaway at the Jailhouse Inn! Although we've been coming to Newport for 30+ years, this was our first stay here, and we will definitely return! The front desk was very friendly and helpful, the Halloween decor was fun, and the "jailhouse" details such as iron-barred & detective division doors, memorabilia, etc. were well done (not kitschy). Our 3rd floor room (Cell #20)had 2 queen beds which had the most comfortable mattresses and pillows, and featured wood beams and a large bathroom with beautiful vintage tile floors. The room faced the street, with beautiful views of an historic church and the White Horse Tavern. There were fresh baked cookies at 3pm, and the continental breakfast had plenty of variety, and was of good quality. read more

We were treated very well. The staff was amazingly accommodating. We were there for five nights and were sorry to leave. We had a very comfortable and large room, with an excellent mattress. The breakfast was excellent - fruit, breads, oatmeal, etc. We're looking forward to coming again. read more

Newport Rhode Island has a reputation for gilded- high end == but this place is unique and worth the stay even though it may not fit your "idea" of Newport! . hot fresh cookies at 3pm until they are gone- Yes! . Parking and walking distance to local restaurants and busy harbor area- Yes! . Breakfast with more than just cereal and bread- check yes! . Support a piece of History and stay in Newport-- this is comfortable- bathroom worked well- small refrigerator in room- central area ope 24 hours with tables- and hot water- microwave . My one complaint is that the woman at the front desk led me to believe there would be lots of vegan options for breakfast but there weren't. She was new and didn't know but I blame the owners for not telling her. She was, otherwise, extremely helpful and gave us some good tips on where to get vegan food in town and what to see and do. My husband and I stayed in Solitary confinement for a night. A clean room with no frills. Gun safe door to closet is pretty cool. Air conditioner kind of blocked noise from the street. Cookies and parking were a nice touch. My only complaint would be the tub in the bathroom needs to be replaced. Didn't really make me want to shower there. It is peeling off and needs some attention. The history and architecture of the building are super neat, and everything was very clean. Sharon was so nice and really accommodating. My boyfriend and I stayed here in June, they have a "two night midweek" package which included 2 nights in a standard room, 2 tickets to one of the mansions, 2 tickets to the Newport Vineyard for a tour and wine tasting, and a $60 voucher to the Clark Cooke House. It came out to be about $400 including taxes. The inn actually used to be a jailhouse back in the day, so you can still see the iron bars at the front desk, and some of the light fixtures look like they are from when it was still a jailhouse. Our room was very nice and spacious. I was worried that it would be kind of run down looking, but everything was very clean and the bathroom was modern. We had a window air conditioner which was nice because it was very hot while we were there. A huge plus about this place is that they have parking! I hear that it can be quite a pain to park in Newport so this was very handy. The inn had a great location; only about a 5 minute walk to get to Thames Street. Our hotel package included continental breakfast, but we never ate there. They do have a nice little breakfast room set up for their guests. I would definitely stay here again. The prices were reasonable, the location was perfect, and the king sized bed was very comfortable. Oh, and if you like ghost stories, apparently the Jailhouse Inn is haunted. Guests have been known to feel a "presence" on the third floor. We were on the first floor so I didn't feel anything. But after I read that I was a little bit freaked out in my room at night. read more

Stayed here for 4 nights in July. Im surprised at the other review that said the room was unclean... I didnt experience that at all. Staff is super friendly, room was decently sized, but best of all the location is superb. Great place if you plan on stumbling back every night at 2 am- within easy walking distance to downtown but in a quiet spot. Only weird thing was we paid more for a Premier Room, it seemed like it was the same size as my mom's deluxe, which is supposed to be smaller and is cheaper. I recently stayed here during the Newport Folk Festival and was very impressed with this inn. It's bed and breakfast (continental) style more than it is a hotel. The location is fantastic, with close access to Thames St, as well as Broadway. We didn't have a car during our stay and given the location of the Jailhouse Inn, it was very easy to walk everywhere. The rooms are spacious and clean. If you're looking for frills and luxury, this may not be your spot. These are basic accommodations with a helpful staff, easy access to many landmarks, restaurants, and bars, and a functional, clean place to rest your head. I often notice the little details at hotels (for example, my experience is instantly improved if the room has a robe - sometimes it's the minor details that improve the experience). In the case of the Jailhouse Inn, I noticed that they provide very high quality shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and lotion. Again, a minor detail but shows the inn's dedication to providing a high quality, pleasant stay. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to Newport visitors. read more

Just had a nice stay at the Jailhouse inn. I do have to say the Inn is immaculate. The bathrooms were spotless. On another note the mattress was one of the worst mattresses we have slept on. We travel approximately 16 nights a month. The fruit at breakfast was brown bananas ??? And rotten , in the summer? Really? I was recently in Newport for a tradeshow and am absolutely compelled to write about how great this place is! The rooms are pretty decent sized and the overall decor was not overtly 'jailhouse' but still cool/ enough stuff there to give you the feel. The really impressive aspect of this place is the staff. Super friendly and not in a cheesy/ half-hearted way but in a genuine, they actually want to make sure that you have a good time sort of way! I realized I hadn't packed toothpaste and upon inquiring about it at midnight of the first day there the front desk person, Jill, pointed out where to go in the AM and then went so far as to offer her own. Since I wasn't sure what time i'd be up in the AM I said i'd hate to inconvenience her like that and said i'd run out in the AM. When I woke up and headed to get breakfast (wicked good btw) there was Jill's toothpaste in a bag on my door. I really haven't experienced this level of genuine guest service anywhere, not any of the Ritzes, boutique hotels in NYC, resorts in Jamaica or anything. Truly impressive and totally worth the price, which in comparison was tons cheaper than the convention hotel where all my colleagues stayed at! Oh and there was a giant Elvis poster in my room! My girlfriend booked a package where you got 2 nights lodging, 2 tickets to any mansion, 2 tickets to the vineyard, and a coupon for dinner at Clarke Cooke House. It was WELL worth the money spent. The accomodations at Jailhouse Inn were very comfortable. My only 2 complaints are that the wiring is old, so you can't have the a/c, iron, and TV all going at the same time -- and the fact that the recycling truck showed up at 8:00am on Thur morning (not fun with a hangover..lol..). Other than that, I would HIGHLY recommend this to friends, family, or even strangers. read more

We stayed here at the beginning of August. When we pulled into the driveway at about 11, the staff were standing on the porch having a cigarette and told us we could not check in until 3. We knew that, but thought that was not the nicest greeting I've ever received at an Inn. Also, made the mistake of thinking this was a B&B which would include a great breakfast like I've had at so many other Inns I've stayed at, but was informed that this was an "Inn" not a B&B and their breakfast was continental - disappointing. On the other hand, the rooms were really nice, the front porch was delightful and we set up our "cocktail" hour there and watched the passersby. The location was perfect for walking around the harbor area. We had a great time in Newport, and the Inn served its purpose, but I think I would check out a different one next time. read more

We checked in and left within the hour......the room smelled bad and was in poor shape but the bathroom was plainly not clean. The whole place need a complete renovation and a thorough scrub. Even though we explained(politely & tactfully) why we weren't staying, they charged us the full price anyway. Our room was clean and had a big flat screen TV. The staff was very welcoming without being too in your face, and the location can't be beat. We didn't use our car all weekend. My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of staying at the Jailhouse Inn last weekend and had such a great experience. The staff was so warm and friendly from check-in to check-out and the room (we booked a single) was enormous! It was essentially a suite with an additional full/queen sized bed and flat screen. Our bed seemed bigger than a King and was so comfortable! We had about 8 pillows on it lined up in a single row from one side to the other. The breakfast was simple, yet perfect for what we needed (great waffles, cereal, english muffins, hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, fruit juice, etc.), they even had to-go coffee cups which was a plus in mind. No detail/amenity was overlooked; they had large umbrellas by the main entry, blow dryer, iron/iron board, and WiFi in the room. Our only regret was that we missed the fresh baked cookies that they offer at 2 pm (we were out all day and didn't return until late). As we were packing up to leave, we both decided that we will make plans to come back for another stay and get a chance to try those cookies!! Thanks Jail House Inn! read more

This is my second visit to the Jailhouse Inn. The first time we stayed on the first floor and this time I was on the third floor. Both rooms were very neat, clean and accommodating. The theme of this hotel is awesome. It was originally a jail when built in 1772. It has some original features such as bars and wood beams and it makes it a very interesting feel. The inn offers a continental breakfast in the morning and cookies at 2 p.m. Both of which are very delicious. The best thing for me was the comfort of the beds. I do not sleep well normally but these beds where so comfortable I felt like I was sleeping on feathers. Staff members are so friendly and willing to help in any manner they can. The location is great, far enough away from the wharf you don't have as much commotion but only a 5 minute walk away. Can't wait for our next stay. read more

I booked a one night overnight. They have free parking which is great for the location and walking around downtown Newport. However, when booking it said it was a bed and breakfast and included I the price was a made to order breakfast but there was NOT a warm made to order breakfast. It was continental. Total let down since my point of booking this place was to have the bed and breakfast experience. The staff was nice. The king size room I got was pretty small, first floor, no view, and the window faced loud neighbors. Cable and free wifi are a plus! Not as decorative as advertised. Pretty simple. The inn is right downtown. The entrance is really nice and the old jailhouse theme runs from the entrance to the doorway of the room. The staff was friendly and engaging even though we did not Check in until after midnight. The room was motel quality at best. It was clean. $202.97 for a non-event night in October was about 300% of the room's value. Parking for one car only. read more

We stayed there last night. We had a long drive & went to bed. In the morning, when we went to shower, the tub was full of hair. A LOT of hair, enough to photograph. So gross! We went to the visitor center where Elenor found us the jailhouse inn in which only 1 room was available for $229, she called in to the inn and confirmed. On arrival 5 minutes later the room was now $289, $325 with tax. When questioned about price it was a misunderstanding. I guess classic bait and switch! Anyway was the rom worth it, probably not. Very convenient , clean, bed very uncomfortable, pillow sad, small room, cute and quaint . Bottom line I'm not fond of deception and lack of integrity, and of course discomfort! This place was very cute and clean. The location was great and the staff was extremely helpful and recommeded great places to see in RI. However, The continential breakfast wasn't that good. At the risk of never getting my favorite room here again, I have to share that the Jailhouse Inn probably one of the best kept secrets in Newport. We stayed here 4 nights and enjoyed our time immensely. The Jailhouse Inn is historic, yet without the negative factors that sometimes accompany dated buildings. It's clean (and I'm a discriminating traveler). The staff here are delightful & willing to accommodate. The inn appeared freshly painted; the beds and furniture were comfortable. Again, clean-clean-clean. Two thumbs up in my book! Hot tea, coffee & chocolate chip cookies were just some of the amenities we enjoyed every afternoon/evening. Our 3rd floor room also had sky lights & window seats that provided beautiful ambiance. Free parking is ample, and it's located within walking distance of many Newport amenities. To top it all off, The Jailhouse Inn provided my favorite brand of soaps & toiletries, and my favorite selection of Harney & Sons teas. It'd be a crime to visit Newport and not stay at the Jailhouse Inn. read more

My husband and I came here for our first anniversary and what a delight. we were greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine. Everyone was so nice, the location was perfect, close to everything but on a quieter street. Every room gets a parking spot. very clean, spacious and breakfast had a nice selection. I liked the idea of an old jail house and although you see the original gates there is nothing old about it. It smells clean and everything is updated. Top notch and will definitely stay here again and highly recommend it! read more

We loved the Jailhouse Inn so much that I felt like I had to write a review. We had a great experience from check-in to check-out. We arrived about an hour before check-in and were let in early. Already a plus. When we got into our rooms, I was pleasantly surprised at how spacious and clean it was. There is a breakfast room for the continental breakfast, and they have fresh fruit, coffee, tea, and cookies in the afternoon. The staff was very helpful and super nice. The inn is within walking distance to downtown, and they offer parking-- which was nice, since parking in Newport can be a pain. The mansions and some of the other things Newport has to offer are just a short 5-10 minute drive. Also, the rates were much lower than the other hotels in the area. I would absolutely recommend the Jailhouse and can't wait to come back! read more

Bait and switch. My stay here happened a few weeks ago, with my mother, aunt and cousin visiting from overseas. We had booked Superior rooms, two of them, so that everyone in our party could have a bed and at the encouragement of other reviews which said that the Deluxe rooms on the ground floor were a bit noisy. Prepaid our deposit and eagerly waited for our vacation. On arrival, we tried to check in at 2:45 and were told to wait until 3. Asked if they could hold our bags until then and were informed we could leave them in the hallway. Not the warmest welcome. After meeting check in time requirements, we were booked in to rooms on the ground floor, with single beds in each and no explanation. But charged fully for the Superior room rate. I inquired about this with the front desk and was told that we were being placed in the rooms we booked. Since I travel with reservation paperwork on hand I could show that the reservations were made for different/Superior rooms and only at this point, 45 minutes into the check-in process, did the front deck acknowledge that we were not in the rooms that we had booked and that those rooms were unavailable. We were very frustrated about this as it was high season in Newport and there was very limited availability off property for a part of our size (we looked to see if leaving would be an option), and very upset that not only were they happy to give us rooms sub-standard to what we'd booked, they were perfectly willing to charge "Superior room" prices for the privilege. Not being taken advantage of is every customer's right and the front desk did eventually agree to refund the price difference for the rooms, allowing us to pay the actual room price for the rooms we were booked in (otherwise this would have been one star all the way), but no discount for their inability to honor the reservation; two stars for making me do the work to prove purchase and being sneaky about what they knew to be an overcharge for the rooms we were given vs. those we reserved. Breakfast was an average continental affair, the rooms were clean, and the location in town is good if you care to walk to the harbor and restaurants, but the beds were not comfortable and, as other reviewers have stated, the street noise was apparent in the ground floor rooms. Given our poor experience with check in and the dishonesty in dealing with the room situation, we would not stay here again. read more
