I booked this place last minute, and the pricing felt quite reasonable for the area. Upon check-in, the hotel had a lively, buzzing atmosphere. I will say that the spaces appear larger in photos than they are in reality, but it felt more cozy than cramped, which worked well for us. The room itself wasn't particularly spacious--fairly typical for DC--but we were pleasantly surprised with an upgrade from a queen to a king bed. The bathroom, however, was more spacious than expected. The interiors are stylish and distinctive, with a strong purple and pink theme. There are tributes throughout the property to Ruth Bader Ginsburg and other women activists, which gives the hotel a unique personality. If that's not your preference, there are plenty of similarly priced hotels nearby--but I personally appreciated the concept. The location was a big plus. We were able to walk to most major attractions, and when needed, public transportation (bus and train) was just a 5-10 minute walk away. Food was a highlight. The shawarma wings were excellent--though I would have liked a touch more salt--and the pickled chilies and cooling yogurt-based dip were unexpected but complemented the dish very well. The burger and fries were also standout items. The happy hour burger, priced at $10, was filling and well worth it. As someone who takes potatoes seriously, I can say the fries were done right. Drinks were equally impressive. We tried a mix of wines, beers, a Negroni, and a few cocktails--all were well-executed. One minor disappointment was the handling of the "unlimited" coffee, tea, and water mentioned at check-in. While appreciated in theory, they did run out of both coffee and water during our stay. It might be more practical to have refill stations rather than distributing limited cans after advertising unlimited availability. On a positive note, they did give us a welcome nutribar at check in and there were apples to pick at the lobby, which was a nice touch. Overall, the service was excellent, with the exception of one staff interaction. However, I wouldn't judge the entire experience based on a single instance--everyone has off days. Hedy's rooftop on a Friday and Saturday night is simply nothing more than a disgusting example of humanity. I can't even begin to imagine the number of venereal diseases that are exchanged upstairs much less in the pool. It looks like a bunch of prostitutes and pimps walking into the building, Required to get wanded before they are allowed to go upstairs. I was embarrassed to be seen in that place. If they shut that place down or at least changed the environment it might be OK. As it currently stands it is absolutely embarrassing and disgusting and no person with a good reputation would be seen there. read more

*Tourists, do NOT stay here!* I've lived in the neighborhood for years and the management at Hotel Zena is atrocious. They regularly are hosting incredibly loud parties with light shows that violate noise ordinances for the city and can be heard literally over a block away late at night/early AM. After calling the hotel multiple times over the last year, and them confirming they've received multiple complaints, they say it's out of their control as they rent the rooftop out to separate parties and organizations. You can see in other reviews this is a common problem if you are staying here in the warmer months. The poor guests staying here in the summer must get no sleep. Horrible place for children to stay due to the noise and drunk guests. I would not recommend anyone stay here until management/operations cares a little more about their customers and those who live in their community. The Washington Plaza across the street is a much better alternative and where we send our out of town guests to stay now! read more

Soooo, it's the last day of March, and I couldn't close Women's History Month without reviewing Hotel Zena, a woman centered experience. The ambience is incredible! From the moment the valet took our car to stepping into the lobby, I was already impressed. The staff was helpful and courteous, and there was so much to take in. The hotel is gorgeous and in a walkable area. There is a restaurant/lounge/bar inside the hotel, and I really enjoyed breakfast/brunch. There is art on display throughout, a selfie station, and a gift shop on site. The room was very clean and comfy, and my favorite feature was the unique shower. I would definitely stay again whenever I'm in DC! read more

What a rollercoaster. I arrive early; room's not available for early check-in. No prob. I'm told that they'll call me when the room's available. Fast forward a few hours and I don't get a call prior to check-in time. I come back after the formal check-in time and I'm told a room is now ready. I get a keycard, go up to the room, and I'm not sure who's more surprised, me or the fellow who's already in the room, splayed out on the bed. Awkwardturtle. Back down to lobby I go. I wait in a lengthy queue again before explaining to a different front desk staffer that there's already someone in the room I'm assigned. Staffer asks for my credit card and ID again. He explains the charges/holds that I'll see on my card, then assigns me a new room on a lower floor (fine). My new room seems to be an upgrade to a suite (yay!). It features a mishmash of floor lamp lighting--all of which are individually controlled. Flipping off the lights is a bit like an escape room puzzle; it takes several minutes of searching for switches (all different) to turn each lamp off. My second order of business is figuring out how to turn the *heat* off in the room, even though it's 80+ degrees outside. Once that's sorted, I pull out my laptop to get a little work done, only to discover that the table in the dining area is wobbly. Nope, don't want to accidentally tip over and break something. Otherwise, I have an utterly enjoyable stay. The bathroom is spacious and offers both a standing shower and tub (which I sadly didn't have time to use). Once the A/C is running, the room stops being a sauna (there's a time and a place to enjoy a sweat lodge--before attending a company event is not one of them). If you're willing to navigate potential surprises, Hotel Zena can be a really pleasant, moderately priced getaway in DC. Fortunately, I'm generally not someone who gets flummoxed by a curveball. Caveat emptor: based on my n=1 experience, it seems like their operations may suffer from some boutiquey idiosyncrasies you're less likely to encounter at a big corporate megachain peer. read more

Had a fantastic time on the rooftop, went down after a party was walking in and sat at the hotel bar on the main lobby, fig leaf bar and ordered a small appetizer waiting for the better part of 45 minutes and decided to cancel the order close my tab and call it a day. My tab came out and my food came out shortly after upon receiving the food instead of a courtesy to say hey you've had you sitting here waiting 45 minutes for an appetizer the immediate response was would you like to pay for it or we can throw it away. I do hope that they did not serve that food to anybody else because there is nobody else at the bar. The bartender was Taiyana I wanna make sure I don't get any of the other solid staff confused with her but this killed any good review I can have other space especially giving a Cavalier altitude. read more

What a lovely hotel! The ambience is unique and interesting! The art is fascinating, and the rooftop view is lovely! You can see so much of DC! The pool is small, but great. The rooms are small but efficient. I've never experienced such an interesting shower. The suite is spacious...and that tub! Divine! There are several spots for holding gatherings, and during my stay, we made use of one of the rooms. The catering staff was thoughtful, and the food was good. Booked primarily for rooftop pool, only to get to said pool to find an incredibly loud generator (assuming for band) that was so loud half the lounges were unusable and the band was overpowered by it so the music wasn't even good. Pulled up the first night to check in and there was a private event on the roof so the lobby was packed and chaotic, the elevators were packed and took forever to get in, valet was super backed up and seemed like there was only one guy working it and we were instructed to leave our car half in the street which is crazy for a $60 valet. The event on the rooftop was so loud we could hear it from our 4th floor room until like 2-3am. Were told upon check in that happy hour was 5-7 in both the upstairs bar and the lobby. Ordered drinks upstairs only to be told happy hour was just downstairs. Only plus was that the rooms were clean. Also, the toilet was crazy loud so if you needed to use it you while someone was sleeping, you're guaranteed to wake them up. Would not stay here again. For $270/night this was a big waste of money. read more

Very cute hotel located in the heart of DC. It's chic and beautifully decorated. Full-service bar and restaurant, plus a pool table. Heavy on the side of feminism, displayed through their art inside the hotel. Used resort pass to book a day room. I was there from 7am-7pm, so I got to experience different staff members during different shifts. Roland provided excellent customer service behind the bar during the morning shift. He was friendly and patient. Maria was also friendly. Towards the evening, I encountered Ronald and Tah at the front desk. Both were super friendly and pleasant. Ronald took time to explain the process for a possible future stay, and he was super knowledgeable about the history and purpose of the hotel. Unfortunately it rained my entire stay, so I didn't get to use the main amenity I came for, the rooftop pool. Also, my room had a broken shade, which I reported early in my stay, but it couldn't be fixed, so I was forced to keep the curtains closed the entire time. It was also an handicap accessible room, slightly dusty. I think i got whatever room was available at my time of check-in. I'd be willing to give Zena Hotel another try in the future, just based on the friendly customer service, but I'd absolutely need a different room. My wife decided to spend our 10-year anniversary at Hotel Zena. After she arrived to decorate, she noticed that is was a woman-centric, women-empowerment type of vibe. If that turns you away then I understand, but I will tell you that I had an amazing stay, OVERLY amazing brunch + mimosas at FigLeaf Bar, and I enjoyed the art and architecture. This place was very well thought out. From the lobby to the room to the rooftop, the art and design was exceptionally thought out and executed. Overall, my stay was a 4.5/5! We booked a double queen room for a bachelorette weekend at Hotel Zena. The room itself was a little on the smaller side, but we made it work comfortably for our group. The only downsides were that the lighting in the room could've been brighter, and the AC had a tendency to shut off randomly. Other than that, the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, and we really appreciated how kind everyone was throughout our stay. The view overlooking the center was beautiful and added a nice touch to the experience. The only major disappointment was that the pool and rooftop bar area were closed. It was an 80° weekend, and while I understand it was technically off-season, it would've been nice to at least have the rooftop lounge open -- especially since that was one of the main reasons I booked the hotel. The slushy machine was even still on and had product inside, which made it feel like a missed opportunity to let guests enjoy the space in such perfect weather. Overall, we still had a great time, and the hotel's vibe and staff definitely made up for the few inconveniences. I'd stay here again, but I'd double-check the rooftop and pool schedule before booking next time. read more

This is a trendy boutique hotel in a great location in DC. Walkable to many tourist attractions, as well as the metro. The neighborhood is friendly and more business oriented, although very safe and with many restaurants and parking garages (garages that are cheaper than the hotel). The beds were soft in a bad way, and you sorta sunk into them like a beanbag chair. The water temps in the shower and sink were also touch and go, and often got too hot if you weren't careful (hopefully they can fix this!). We were not able to check in literally didn't let us check in till 5-minutes before 3pm. OMG They had so many guest just waiting on the rooftop for their rooms. Really, this is not customer service. Also, the shower from one minute to the other, was burning hot or freezing cold. Why?? After we showered, there was a puddle on the outer part of the glass. The bathroom lighting was horrible, dim and no extractor. So ladies, when you shower, you can't do your make up till the mirror clears up. The room service takes forever. Probably wouldn't stay here again. Very friendly staff, but that's about it. Super uncomfortable beds and not great amenities. I splurged and spent all my carefully earned Chase points on a "city view" room -- which is more like a 2nd floor side street view, with a very bright streetlight in your window after dark. The mattress is really weird and hard, and the pillows are also overstuffed and not very soft (not like Marriott down ones). My back was killing me after just 2 nights, and my friend left to go back to the suburbs and sleep in her bed, it was so bad. Also, the shower made weird run-off noises in the middle of the night, and the toilet made a wheezing noise for quite awhile after flushing as it filled back up (super awesome in the middle of the night). So not the best sleep I've had. The main bar doesn't open until 5pm, so you can't bring a laptop and work anywhere on the main floor with a drink. First hotel I've been in that's like this. The 14th floor rooftop bar you may have seen in photos also isn't open during the "winter season" -- which includes early April as well it seems. So I was generally disappointed in the room AND the amenities I expected. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I guess I can give one star because I'm absolutely behind the inclusivity and empowerment theme of the hotel. But, on the other hand it has a rooftop bar/party that plays, no, BLARES, the loudest music until after midnight. I heard people in a nearby restaurant complaining about how loud and obnoxious the sound was from the rooftop. And they were staying in a hotel across the street! So, imagine how loud it is inside Zena. Don't bring children and don't plan on sleeping before 1am. I think it shows such a lack of courtesy to not only its own guests, but that they also lack respect for the whole neighborhood and community. It's shameful and immature. I'm all for having fun and partying, really I like to too, but just turn it down a bit! Is that so hard?? Then everyone can still have fun and others won't be disturbed. The owners must be awful people to subject their customers and neighbors to this massive noise nuisance. Or at best, they lack care and respect. Don't stay here and tell others not too either. They disturb the guests in all the surrounding hotels and anyone who unfortunately lives nearby. They don't deserve your business. Support other hotels that care about the community around them. A really cute hotel that's walkable to a lot of cool establishments. You definitely pay a premium for a lot of the "boutique" feel, but that's probably something you expect going into a hotel like this. NOTES: -This is a themed boutique hotel. Feminism and women's rights/empowerment is the "decor" they have going on around the hotel. From gigantic birth control murals to in-room pillows with facts about Ruth Bader Ginsberg, it's all about women as strong and powerful. -The music at the bar carries for late-night sleepers. If you're sensitive, make sure you're at least on the 5 or 6th floor. We were on the 3rd, and we could easily hear and feel pounding bass music. It wasn't "too much to sleep with" for us, but if you were sensitive, it'd definitely be too much. -Hotel Zena has an additional "Amenities" fee on top of your room rate and taxes. This covers a whole host of random things, but if you're not expecting to have free time for any fun, this additional fee (at least $25 a day) might be a deciding factor in where you stay. Some of the stuff it covers (the rental items) make sense. The things they add as its "value-added" fee on the website (local phone calls, pool access, in-room fridge) just sound like bullshit money grabbing. -There are some reviews that state you can't swim in the pool during Hedy's/bar hours. That was not the case when we were here. Lots of swimming (and also an overworked, stressed, single employee working a rooftop bar on a weekend). -Unlike other hotels I've stayed at with "in-room showers", you can NOT see into these showers. You don't even get shadows when someone is showering. This makes it a lot more friend appropriate than some of the see-through glass ones I've loved and enjoyed at hotels over the years (EMC2 in Chicago, for example). PROS: -LOCATION. With most DC hotels, you're paying for the location. Hotel Zena is the same. It faces Thomas Circle, and it's walkable to quite a few restaurants and bars. -"Free" rentable items. It's a bit hard to find info about it (even when you're here; the employees are a bit confused by it), but Hotel Zena offers a small range of free items you can check-out to use during your stay. They have a Nintendo Switch, multiple Instax cameras (you pay for film), board games, white noise machines, GoPros, casino sets, and more. This can really be a fun way to play with things you wouldn't normally think to bring. (I had a blast bringing the Instax camera to the rooftop pool and "documenting" the afternoon!) -The room is gorgeous and spacious (for DC standards). We didn't feel cramped, and with the floor-to-ceiling windows, it felt pretty open. It was a treat to open up the hotel room door every time we came back; it's just so pretty! -Bathroom was spacey too. More than enough room - which, again is a premium in DC. CONS: -The downstairs bar and restaurant doesn't open until 5pm. That's late - especially if you're someone who likes to camp in the social areas to do work while around others during the day. -Parking is expensive. That appears to be a standard around DC. The valet parking is particularly expensive ($50+ a night). There are lots of garages around for self-park, BUT be aware that many of them are closed on weekends. If you're not familiar with DC, also be aware that "Daily Parking" and "Overnight Parking" are different things; if you're leaving that car overnight, you need the overnight parking rates. We were able to find a nearby garage at $35 for overnight parking, and that's the best we could find. -I'm not sure what's with the water line design here, but the shower water will randomly get hotter (and colder) while using it. It's not dangerously so, but if you find the perfect, very-warm temperature, the unexpected heat will make you step out of the shower. read more

This hotel is so much cooler than me I almost feel like I should not have been allowed to stay there. Some of my favorite things: The walls of the lobby, lounge and bar are adorned with feminist icons the rooftop bar was a little oasis (but it does close at 4pm which is a very big bummer) The entire front desk team were incredibly kind, friendly, helpful, you name it. My first thought when I stepped into this trendy hotel was that it was good I left my heels at home because they seem to decorate their lobby with them (see picture of desk). Between the funky shoe desk and RBG wall I was a fan of this hotel. Throughout my short 2 night stay it got better and better: - The staff was beyond friendly - The room was very spacious and clean - They have a soap dispenser at the sink, which I always appreciate over the little hand soaps - And the lovely gym has everything from a boxing bag to a peloton bike - And it's literally a block from my office. I never made it to the rooftop pool or enjoyed the bar, although I did work from the lounge before heading to the airport. I'll get to try all that next time though because I can't imagine staying anywhere else when here for work. read more

I was looking for a place in DC for a daycation for my most recent birthday and Hotel Zena came up on resort pass so i figured id give it a go. On resort pass I was able to get a day pass that ran for a full 12 hours from 7am to 7pm with that came full use of hotel amenities and a room. I was able to check in right at 7am and get breakfast served via room service and relax a bit before using the pool. The room was clean and welcoming and the shower was spacious and had all the amenities I needed. The lobby area is very fun, it not only has a great bar area and a wonderful area dedicated to amazing women but there is also a photo booth tucked over in the corner to get some great selfies. I even love the pin wall that has pro woman pins. So why 4 star and not 5 you ask? well the pool area while wonderful could use some different tiling! I went on a rather warm day in August and once the sun hit the tile around the pool you are likely to burn your bare feet. You could see people running back and forth, taking their flip flops into the water and using towels to scoot their way across, there has to be a better material that could be used! Otherwise it was such a great visit and even the scorching hot ground couldnt keep me from returning. read more

We booked Hotel Zena on Resort Pass, so we had our room from 7 am to 7 pm and access to the pool. We had brunch at the downstairs restaurant in the hotel and thought the crab omelet lacked flavor but the french toast was soft and the perfect level of sweetness. The pool is pretty small and so is the rooftop, which is a con, but for around $125 on Resort Pass, I think this was a good deal and my sister and I really enjoyed our day together. read more

I love the aesthetic of this hotel, very femme and classy. I hate masculine businessman hotels. The pool rooftop was excellent with great city views. There were a few downsides though that are not great when you're trying to get in and out of DC so I don't know that I'd stay here for a business trip. First valet / parking was a mess the day that we got in, we waited about 20 minutes before someone approached to help. Then we only parked for one night but were charged for 4! And the front desk staff was a little sassy for my taste. Finally, I paid extra for the suite with the bath tub and the stopper wouldn't keep the water in. Kind of obnoxious to have a soaker tub that only fills half way. To end on a positive, the room service staff were very kind and the cleaning staff were absolute top notch and so sweet.
