Been craving sushi and ramen all day and found Hou Fish Market on Yelp. I was looking for something fast and no-frills that checked all the boxes, and this place certainly did! We stopped by for an early dinner after grocery shopping at Seafood City. Since the weather looked a bit gray, we decided to drive over. Even though the lot was busy, there were plenty of open spots near Hou since it's toward the end of the plaza. It's been a while since I've been to this area--it has cleaned up nicely now that Highway Inn is gone. Inside, the restaurant is clean, well-lit, and the staff is very friendly. We ordered the Shrimp Tempura Udon and the California + Spicy Tuna + Crab Salad roll combo. No regrets! The miso-based broth in the udon was delicious, and I appreciated that the shrimp tempura came on the side to stay crispy. My personal favorite, however, was the spicy tuna on top of the cone sushi--it paired perfectly with the udon. The prices are great, and I was happy to learn they have a second location on Kapiolani. So happy a sushi place opened up near my home! The staff was very friendly and asked if I had any questions. The seating area was very clean and the tables had all the condiments for your meal. I tried the hamachi lovers, Aloha poke bowl, chirashi, and Teri chicken bowl. The fish tasted really fresh and not "fishy". The Teri chicken was very good, not dry or too salty! My kids mopped that bowl up! And sometimes they bring in uni from Hokkaido and sell mini bowls with ikura. You can ask for all uni but it will cost more. Overall, Hou Fish Market is a great place to get your sushi fix quickly! They have sushi platters for your pot lucks and parties! Also a good selection of boba drinks and teas. Jenny, Manager did follow-up with call, informing me that there will be a refund, however, it may take a "couple of days". In making attempts to look at the positives, I said, "the pickled ginger was delicious". She replied, "Ginger"?. I say yes, the ginger. She again says, "ginger"? I tried to explain what ginger was and the placement of it on a sushi platter. She said, "pickled ginger, huh"? Needless to say, I stopped explainING and thought, how does a sushi influenced restaurant not know what ginger was? The end of this story, is that Uber Eats sent an email relaying that my order was fully refunded. My advice? If one chooses to work with the public at least have a decent grasp on the English language. And if you're a "manager", have professionalism and a better command of the English language. We visit Hou Fish in Waipahu regularly because it's a solid spot for great quality fish and udon. Service is friendly and quick, and we love that the store is dog friendly. They have a dog menu so your pup can enjoy a treat too! We ordered the seared salmon bowl, California roll, super volcano roll, and honey calamansi drink. The seared salmon bowl was definitely the star for me. If you love aburi-style salmon, this will hit the spot. The salmon was buttery soft and literally melted in my mouth. The super volcano roll had a nice balance of flavor. It not too spicy, and has a sweet-savory tang from the sweet chili sauce. Went to try this place for the first time. This place took over a precious boba spot in Waipahu. The poke was fresh, and seasoned okay. The presentation was done nicely. & looks like they offer boba drinks as well. The prices are reasonable for the portion. It filled me up. Haha Before placing our order online, we called Hou Fish Market to check on the availability and quality of their Uni. The young lady who answered was helpful in explaining the different ways they serve Uni, and also shared that it's from Japan. Definitely surprised about that and I'm so glad it didn't disappoint! 10/10 says the wife :) Same goes for the Ikura! She was loving the Ikura in the donburi, as well as the Ikura Nigiri. Located in Waipahu went there because we had reservations at the sushi spot in Aiea, I confirmed the reservation 2 times letting them know I had a dog at first I asked them if pets are allowed and the girl that answered said yes and I called that day to confirm because we had a Birthday dinner and she again said yes. After getting there they were very rude and then telling us tie the dog outside if we want to dine in or we could take out the food. Then I tell the lady why didn't you just say no pets allowed we could have gone elsewhere, which now she says my English not good? We got the Hamachi Bowl and it was so Ono. The service was junk the first time i checked it out. I was at the front desk for a good while and she didn't even acknowledge me. With getting overly into detail, she also seemed like she didn't want to serve me even though the store was empty. She came back to the front with my udon and started to bag it, She then turned around and picked up the shrimp with a thongs and with the other shrimp in a container in the other hand turned around and packed it up. Fresh fish in Waipahu! Yes, this is the same restaurant as the Kaka'ako location. When in Waipahu, people can choose between Tanioka's (poke and local grinds) or Hou Fish Market (more on sushi rolls/party trays and sashimi). What I think is great about this spot is that Waipahu, Kunia, Ewa, and Ho'opili residents can enjoy quick, fresh sushi without having to hop on the H-1. Hou isn't a grab and go, nor a fancy sit down restaurant, but fast casual sushi. Hou serves boba teas as well, and they're not too bad (I'm a boba snob, so that says something!) I've stopped by here for lunch with my husband several times after church and almost all the time, we'd run into church friends! I've also ordered a mixed sushi platter when hosting my uncle from out of town. Hubby and I have also eaten here as my first sushi meal after a Japan trip when I was still having Japan withdrawals. The sushi satisfied my craving! I've taken pictures of Hou's sushi, but they're scattered all over my camera roll. Overall, the island has great sushi compared to the mainland and a lot of competition. So glad sushi chefs now serve Waipahu and aren't just concentrated in town. Love this place! My neighbor told me about this relatively new place so had to check it out to get my poke bowl fix. Besides poke bowls, they have bentos, sushi platters etc. I really like their selections and the prices are reasonable for what you get. I ordered the Aloha Bowl and absolutely loved it! To balance expectations, the quality is on par with value. It's not the freshest poke you can get but it's decently fresh and will satisfy most poke lovers. I was happy to see that they didn't put too much rice hidden under the poke- was just right. For the Aloha Bowl, I really liked the variety with salmon, ahi and ikura with the seaweed, avocado and imitation crab. I haven't seen this combo anywhere for a poke bowl so that's what caught my eye. The avocado was very fresh & firm which was a nice surprise because avocados have a tendency to ripen suddenly and become mushy quickly. The ginger and wasabi were good but I wished the wasabi was in a separate container or something because I inadvertently ate a big chunk of it and it caught me by surprise (imagine big eyes and nose burn!) . The staff was friendly and greeted me coming in. I ordered takeout. My order came out really fast but I was the only customer at the time. I like that my order was handed to me instead of someone yelling " Aloha Bowl" for you to pickup at counter. The place is new & clean. There are 8 tables. We've ordered from their restaurant on Kapiolani several times, and the food has been good. This was our first time at the Waipahu location, and we won't return. I ordered a California roll. Pretty standard, right? How could it go wrong? With every piece, the nori was so tough, I couldn't bite it. When I tried, the roll would open, and then everything fell out on me and in the dish. After trying several pieces, I brought it back to the counter and tried to explain the problem. I showed them the mess in the dish with the nori that could not be chewed. Unfortunately the employee and her boss didn't speak enough English to understand the problem. They just shrugged and stared. I won't be back. Hou Fish Market now has a location in Waipahu! I've been to their Kapiolani, so when I was craving sushi for lunch- I knew I needed to stop by. I ordered online on the drive over and my food was ready by the time we got there. The online ordering process was super easy, efficient, and each item on the menu had a photo and description. I ordered the hamachi poke bowl (A3 $15.50) and the garlic ebi, ahi, salmon, and hamachi sushi set (B5 $15). The poke bowl had a good fish to rice ratio and a lot of raw onions. I'm such a sucker for hamachi poke, I wish more spots offered it! It was a tad bit salty and I think could have benefited from a bit of acid but with a good heaping of rice with every bit of fish- it did balance out. The seared sushi set was really what I was craving, and boy, was my craving satisfied! It's as if the fish, sauce, and rice melted together- it was just so cohesive and delicious. What I love about this spot is that they are uber dog-friendly! They even have a dog menu with these little doggy donuts made of either salmon and rice or chicken and rice. Fresh and out West! I could end this review here but there is so much to be excited about. This had been on our "let's try" list for the past week and Im so glad we didnt wait any longer. If you like Ahi & Veg, you'll LOVE this place. Super fresh at reasonable prices. mom kept praising how good the rice is. Very clean and boba drinks too. We usually order otw to pickup and everything is ready when we get there. The staff are super friendly and have even accommodated my allergy to shellfish by offering to change one of my long time favorite rolls so I can still enjoy it. I always go for eel and they execute it perfectly. The sets are really great if you love one type of fish; they come with a few rolls and sashimi as well. Was walking by here and wanted to get a boba drink at Top Tea and found out it was closed and replaced by Hou Fish Market! Was pretty bummed since I loved Top Tea but wanted to try out this newly opened sushi place. Inside has lots of tables for dining in. Very spacious and clean. They even sell dog treats! (and also boba tea... just not my preferred drink) Photos on the pamphlet and menu inside look very appetizing. I ordered a tuna spicy tuna roll, spicy tuna set and ebi nigiri. Surprised my sushi came out looking exactly like the photos on the menu! It was very tasty, spicy tuna wasn't that spicy at all though which I don't mind. I visited Hou Fish Market one afternoon because I was in the area and looking for a late lunch. Hou Fish Market is located in a little shopping strip across from the Don Quijote. There's a few other establishments that share a parking lot. It was not hard to find parking and there was no one inside when I went--plenty of empty tables! The interior is very clean and they have a little bit of decor for CNY. The menu kind of reminds me of Ahi and Vegetable's menu. they offer different poke bowl options, nigiri combinations and salad options. What's really great about this place is that they have drinks too! I recently went to Domo Cafe (which also offers similar food options) and I was disappointed to find out that they no longer offer iced teas. I like that Hou Fish Market offers teas and boba drinks. Poke bowls with a refreshing iced tea are my favorite combination. The one girl working the register also made my poke bowl. She was nice, but not overly friendly and my food was prepared quickly. I got the seared salmon bowl. It was very heavy on the sauce, which I think some people like. It was a bit too much for me, but I still enjoyed it. It was a little on the pricey side and I already was kind of put off by the bowls that were over $20. But i guess this is the new norm! read more
