Every time I come back, it's like stepping right into my Hanabada Dayz - riding bike around Waipahu, stopping by Big Way or the bike shop for fishing gear, and seeing Rocky's packed with locals from the neighborhood. There's just something comforting about that kind of nostalgia. The old school photos of Waipahu on the walls really take you back in time the moment you walk thru the doors. The food? I canNOT stress enough the importance of places like this enough! Places like Rocky's Coffee Shop are a real life look in to the history of Hawaii as told by food. You walk in and there's a quaint dining room that probably seats 25 or so. The main centerpiece of the interior, set off to stage left of the shot is the 10 foot hot, flat grill! The smells that are coming from there can't be summed up in words. Sure, I can tell you what the meats they were but it's more about the feelings they conjured up. Rows of bacon, squished under a cast iron press. Hash browns sizzling to the perfect crisp. Fluffy eggs forming their shape. All the auntys there are so nice. You can tell they've been working there for years. They know the menu by heart. Service the way it used to be done! All the people eating there have the same spots that they always assume when they come. And if you stay long enough, or come at the right time, you watch the crowds change. The early crowd features the kupunas. They read their papers. Listen to the radio. Talk about bus schedules. The later crowd has the younger generations. Adults with baby faces and babies. The generation that had grown up eating here. Prices aren't the best, but it takes a lot to keep a place like this open. So PLEASE... come and eat. On my last visit over 15 years ago I was left very underwhelmed and slightly irritated with the lack of Service. Fast Forward to this past weekend, the Husband and I wanted a simple breakfast after the gym and Rocky's had popped into my head. Definitely a staple in the Waipahu community, this cozy coffee shop sits on Waipahu Depot Street right outside of the Waipahu Festival Market. The area can get ridiculously busy so if you can, park on the street instead of in the Lot. You will have a hard time getting in and out once the surrounding Businesses open. I'm assuming where you're sitting will determine the type of Service you get. We sat at the Counter, and while we were very entertained with watching them cook orders, we were a bit neglected by the Staff, while the parties at the regular tables were presented with friendlier and more patient Servers. We waited over 15mins to get our order taken and since I guess they thought we were regulars they kept rushing to take our orders while we weren't given Menu's. We pulled the Menu up on Yelp lol. Food was standard. I really loved the fried rice! but the Hash was passable, it was too mushy for my liking. Also, our order of pancakes came 20mins after we finished eating, I wish i were kidding, We kept trying to flag down Aunty to cancel but she was very frazzled cooking, taking orders, and filling orders so we just waited. At the end we spent $60 including tip and left with a Hoo-Hum experience. Although I know for certain I just don't have the greatest of luck with this place, I am so happy they are still around and very much thriving! I think during peak times, it gets busy, but at 6:45 on a weekday, there was no wait. There's not much to speak of inside. They have several booths and counter seating. It's kinda old and grimy, but I guess that's part of the charm. I ordered a corned beef hash with rice and over easy eggs. It was simple and perfect. She motioned to me to have a seat at the counter... perfect! I was fascinated by the cook at the grill. He was awesome! I watched his skills - cracking eggs open, delicately turning the Vienna sausage, making fried rice, creating banana pancakes, etc - and occasionally taking a sip of Pepsi or popping a bit of bread into his mouth! LOL! I also enjoyed his humming along to the music! I ordered Hamburger Steak plate with tossed salad (instead of macaroni salad). It came with two scoops of white rice... perfect! The inside is very cool they have all these old pictures Waipahu with dates on them which I thought was very interesting especially to see how everything was back in the day. Honestly a hidden gem. Growing up my family did groceries at Waipahu festival marketplace but we never bothered to eat here. My husband found it on a whim and we decided to go here. There are some laces where you step through the front door and know the food is gonna be good. Rocky's is one of those places. My family and I were in the area looking for a breakfast place. TGFY (thank goodness for Yelp) we found Rocky's. We got super lucky and scored a parking spot right in front of the restaurant. Prior to heading over, we called in our order. We got a banana "short stack", Rocky's omelet with fried rice, and a fried rice omelet (side hash brown). The "short stack" was not a short stack. The bugga was HUGE! I didn't think my 3 y/o could finish it...but I also didn't think it'd also be enough to also fill up my husband I too! It was so worth it! Im not gonna lie..they're my new favorite pancakes. I wish I could have them tomorrow for breakfast! The omelet fried rice is just as it sounds. It was also very tasty and good portion size. The reason I knew the food was going to be good as soon as I walked through the door was because of that homey vibe it gave off. The food tasted like something my grandma would make. Haven't been to Rocky's in years but it's exactly as I remember it. I called in our order because I know they are usually busy and sometimes there's a wait. Parking is a little hard to find because there's the Filipino market and Hashi okazuya that a lot of people go to. There's also street parking but even that is hard to find an empty stall. Luckily, I got the last open stall I saw when I got there. When I got there, there were a couple people waiting outside and the inside was full (it's a pretty small restaurant). We ordered the Rocky's special omelet with fried rice, the breakfast with easy over eggs, bacon, and fried rice, and the waffles to share. The fried was good, a little on the dry side, but still tasty. I really liked the omelet. It had four different meats and flavorful. The breakfast with bacon was good too, your typical breakfast and got to get extra crispy bacon! The waffle was huge, but a little over cooked and salty (I think because of the butter they put on top). Other than the salty butter, I really enjoyed our breakfast and I missed Rocky's! They used to accept cash only, but they finally accept credit cards! Which is a big plus for me because I hardly ever carry cash on me.
