There are a lot of buildings in the medical complex and you have to drive up to the door of each…read morebuilding to see the addresses -- it's the building with the big OrthoVirginia sign at the top -- it's on the 3rd floor, so add time for parking, walking, and waiting for the elevator. It was a very busy place. I arrived for my 930 new patient appointment at about 935. There was a registration line of several people. When it was my turn, I was greeted by a friendly person and went through the check-in and copay procedure, including digital forms on a tablet. I then had to wait in line, again, to give the tablet back. Then, it was off to wait. About 1020, (45 mins later), I was called back to be advised I arrived too late and would need to reschedule. I mentioned I was only about 8 mins late (including waiting in the registration line) and was advised new patients are supposed to arrive 15 mins early, so I was outside the 15 minute window. I get the late policies. I felt horrible for being a couple minutes late, but I was definitely within the 15 minute window. However, I wasn't advised I needed to arrive by 915, I was told my appointment was at 930 and to bring my ID, insurance card, and list of medications (I took notes). And, if I was outside the arrival window, why was I allowed to register, pay my co-payment, and sit for 45 minutes just to be told to reschedule? Patients are usually advised of late arrival at registration. Thanks for wasting my time off from work. Will I get my $25 back? (It applied to the next visit!) I'm adding one star for the friendliness of the registration clerk and the doctor. I was able to reschedule the next week, and the reviews and recommendations for this doctor are overwhelmingly great, so we will see how it goes and I will update. UPDATE: I went back for appointment, previous results in hand, and asked to run the same labs, stating valid reasons, including an issue I had previously that was detected by running a lab not being ordered, and also that we couldn't compare apples to oranges, etc. The first request was refused and the second request was ignored, so I made an appointment with a different doctor. Side Rant: It is so hard to find a doctor that will work with you and not ON you. No one knows my body and my medical history better than ME! After all, I'm paying for a service. It's like going to a restaurant and having the server tell you what you are going to eat. LOL Feel free to message me recommendations! IMHO, the office staff could use some training in scheduling. Be sure to take extra time off work so you can arrive 15 mins earlier than your appointment or risk having to reschedule! She seems like a great doctor, just not one willing to work WITH me for my particular issue. YMMV

I am so glad that, after 5 years in Richmond, I found Dr McKenzie and her office. I am been so…read moreencouraged by their professionalism and how little I have to wait to be seen. When I talk to Dr. McKenzie, I repeatedly note that she is two things: caring and competent. I find that this to be an ideal mixture for me. I don't just want a doctor who is JUST attentive to my concerns and is kind (which Dr McKenzie definitely is), but who doesn't seem highly skilled at their job. I also don't want the other extreme- a doctor who seems well-read and passionate about medical concerns (which she also is!) but who doesn't listen. Dr. McKenzie is a good balance of both of these positive traits! I feel confident that she wants to get down to the bottom of what is bothering me, and not just give me a prescription. In fact, she has been helpful in guiding me to stop taking some meds that were harmful. She is funny and passionate about healthcare. I feel well cared for when I leave her office!

I requested medical leave in 2017 and again as I type this post due to clinical depression &…read moregeneralized anxiety disorder; in which Dr. Heatwole made difficult. In order to have both leaves approved, he mentioned that I'd have to take meds and stay in therapy. I didn't have a problem with the therapy; but the medicine I did. My problems and what exacerbated this disorder, I knew medicine could and would never fix. Sure, I tried the Escitalopram even after being scared eand advised to take it as prescribed by Dr. Heatwole; and it helped the anxiety more than it did the depression. However, as I'd mentioned once before to him, the deep seated issues that I've been struggling with continued to take precedence over top of being in a toxic work environment. I also explained to Dr. Heatwole that I'd previously and still continue to fail at finding work from home positions or a job that would be more suitable, as I just could not simply just quit my job. Dr. Heatwole just glossed over the root issues and continued to stay heavily focused on taking medicine over top of suggesting even more medication to stabilize my sleep and mood. I really didn't like the fact that I was pressured and rushed to go back to work. In 2017 after an 8 week leave, I still wasn't well and went back anyway because he 'thought' it was best. Of course, I still felt worse than ever. My last appointment for leave was the absolute worse. I mentioned that I'd lost my brother last September, lost 30 pounds in less than a year; and he had absolutely no remorse. He told me that in 8 months (counting with his fingers), a typical person would have gotten over losing someone!!!! He also mentioned that I needed to be careful exercising, and that people with my condition take this whole weight loss and exercising thing too far. I never mentioned an eating or any body dismorphic issues, so I don't know how my comment that I lost 30 pounds went to him saying that I needed to be careful exercising. A good doctor would applaud their patient for better lifestyle choices and losing weight to stay within a recommended weight range. Also, it is highly suggested for individuals with mental health issues to exercise, so I did not understand why Dr. Heatwole would say that, despite that I didn't mention anything alarming. I was actually 28 pounds overweight prior to losing the 30 pounds, and was severely emotionally eating from 2-3 fast food meals A DAY, still no brownie points there. This time around, he suggested me to go back to work in 4 weeks because as he mentioned, "We sort of need to kind of rush this thing to get you back to work as soon as possible, because I don't want you in the house by yourself thinking about all of your problems"....well hell, being at work makes it feel like I've entered eternal damnation with my thoughts! It doesn't matter where I am, mental illness isn't just a switch to turn off! It should never be about what a doctor wants, it's about the patient's well-being and what a patient feels would be best for them. I cannot work a demanding and toxic job that has greatly contributed to me not healing or feeling any better, and I really didn't know what else to tell him. Anyone with mental illness know that it's a chronic and sometimes a life-long issue. I have been struggling for over 16 years. Dr. Heatwole seems to think that medicine would help me to cope better, and that did not happen considering the layers of stress and rooted issues were always at the forefront. It seems as if he no longer wants me as a patient based off of my last visit with those crude comments. No worries there, I won't be going back to him. Sure as he mentioned, he's been doing this for a long time and 'know' patients like me. Well, it's not right to compare patients to one another even if we struggle with the same thing. Everybody's path and level of emotional pain is different. For over 6 years, I had been seeing Dr. Heatwole and recommended him to a few peers; because of his thoroughness during previous visits. If it wasn't for how he handled these two medical leaves, I would continue to stay a patient. Perhaps he no longer has the patience to deal with my mental disorders, and surely being a sufferer, I do not either.

Recently, I was charged a $35 copay just to have a prescription refilled, only to later be told that if I had called it in differently, it would have been free. That lack of clarity and consistency is frustrating. During a difficult time when I was dealing with depression, I also felt unsupported. Instead of receiving understanding and care, I was given a hard time about taking time off work. Overall, my experience has shifted over the years. Appointments now feel rushed and focused mainly on prescribing medication, with little discussion of alternative or holistic options. I would appreciate a more well-rounded approach to care and clearer communication with patients. I do not recommend this office.

My mom saw Dr Nim and I really like her because she is more about natural healing like my own beliefs, I left going here for the front desk staffs attitude and even though there are some new faces, the attitude remains the same. I do like feeling dismissed, nor do I like faces being made because I asked a question. I have the right ask questions, and the staff should not have an attitude if someone has a question nor should they be made to feel as though they are stupid or feel dismissed. I dont know how long I will be able to handle being back here, wish Dr Nim was somewhere else where the front desk staff is not not "bully-ish". I am not one to tolerate dismissiveness and certainly will not be intimidated by someone trying to be a bully. So here I am because I need a Dr in my network, like Dr Nim but will most likely look elsewhere as already my first appointment gave me exactly what I explained above, the front desk staff, the woman who had alot of eye shadow and wierdly drawn in eyebrows, rolled her eyes, made a face like she was apalled or confused that I asked her a question and this is exactly what I will not deal with. EVER. i used to manage a medical office and a med billing office in my past, I would never tolerate anyone treating the patients like this. As a patient myself, I will not tolerate it either. Get it together folks. Train on how to handle your job or work in a store with items that are not lives. We do not deserve your poor treatment, your dismissiveness, your attitudes. Many people need jobs, maybe this one is not for you! Totally disgusted with my first visit and just dreading to go on here with this behavior. I will try, but I do not think this will work out. I DO NOT tolerate people like this very well. It is sad because Dr blackburn, Dr Nim, Heather, all wonderful. FRONT desk, leaves a lot to be desired. ALOT

We have several members of our family with very specific health needs and Dr. Carl and his staff keep us up to date so we don't have to remember all of the details! They take care of it for you. Cathy is the lead nurse and she is always super organized and extremely helpful and communicative! Colleen is such a sweet and welcoming member of WellcomeMD. I always love seeing her face!:) Heidi is fabulous on the phone and great with communications. She gets the job done! But when it comes to your health, your relationship with your doctor, it's an intimate dynamic because it requires clarity and trust on the part of the doctor and patient. Dr. Carl is so relaxed that he puts his patients at ease immediately. He is thorough and goes through all of your blood panels with you one-on-one and makes excellent suggestions and also is complimentary if he feels that you are doing well. He will prescribe supplementation only if it is reflected as needed in your bloodwork. Personally, my blood pressure zooms up every time I go to the doctor. But with Dr. Carl, he brings it back to normal and puts me at ease. Obviously, my entire family and I are fans of WellcomeMD. I recommend Dr. Carl and Dr. Colfer to everyone I know!
