Before the exam, I told the staff I was paying cash and asked what it would cost. I was told the price would be between $50 and $250. During the exam, Dr. Hoang asked why I was declining dilation. I explained that, for whatever reason, my eyes stay dilated for a couple of days. She told me it only takes a few hours to return to normal. I said I understood that is typical, but it is not my experience. Her response was, "I am not going to argue with you." I was left confused, since no one was arguing. I did not owe anyone an explanation. A patient can decline a procedure without giving a reason. I chose to be upfront about how my own eyes respond, and I was talked down to for it. A doctor should listen to what a patient says about their own body, not dismiss it. When I checked out, the bill was $391. I had another appointment and needed to leave quickly, so I pointed out that the bill was higher than the quote and asked them to send me an itemized bill. It never came. I called and left a message, and it took until the second day to reach anyone. After I finally received the itemized bill, I called billing, and they sent me to Jessica, the office manager. Jessica told me I had received a standard exam. I asked how a standard exam could come to $391 when I was quoted a maximum of $250. She said her notes showed I was quoted a *minimum* of $250. That is not what I was told. Why would a cash paying patient agree to an exam with no upper limit on the price? The right answer was simple: honor the $250 quote. Instead, the focus was on proving the office was right, not on taking care of the patient. That tells me everything about their priorities. When a patient asks for a price up front, the practice should give a clear and honest answer and stand behind it. If you are paying cash, get your quote in writing before you are seen. I will not be returning.
