They just want to sell you expensive silver dollars or anything else they can. They have been around for a long time but they are arrogant and not helpful at all. The service here is amazing. These guys know, precious metals and new mathematics experts in their field. They have a wide selection of collectible coins from all over the world no matter what you want. They have it in stock usually or can get it fairly quickly. I will say you do have to shop around because although their prices are competitive, it is difficult to compete with Internet wholesalers. That said I would much rather pay a little more to deal with a local fender for a confidential transaction with same-day pick up. I guess the only downside would be parking but for two or three bucks you can park in the parking lot at a corner to the location and there's always a police officer present, which is a huge plus. on occasion they may have one or two customers ahead of you in which there is a queuing line. I appreciate the fact that they focus on each customer until that customer has all their questions answered, and they have wrapped up their business before seeing the next customer. Went in several years ago at the recommendation of a wealthy friend who had shopped there for thirty years. It seems that I didn't look wealthy enough for them as the man at the counter scoffed at me when I presented some family heirloom jewelry that I'd been told had value. He tried very loudly to embarrass me by by calling it junk and stating that none of it had value. The security guard stood over me like a bouncer at a club as if my mere presence in the shop was bringing the value down. Oddly, I was dressed well and drive a Mercedes but apparently not the right kind. Several years later I still will not set foot in that shop. read more

This review is only for their jewelry appraisal service, NOT their fine metal and precious coin expertise. They have been in business for many years & were courteous and professional. I had a vintage Rolex appraised and was sorely disappointed with the price offered. Since I researched prices for similar timepieces before bringing my freshly serviced watch appraised, it was disappointing that their offered price was hundreds of dollars LESS than I expected. As a matter of fact their price was LESS than 50% (!!!) what I eventually received from another jeweler (Phil Abrams off Richmond & Fountainview). This disappointing disparity defines the necessity for shopping around until one finds the best offer. The Houston Numismatic Exchange is NOT the ideal place to have vintage timepieces appraised. read more

Mark and Jim are so knowledgeable, it's unfortunate that many of the reviewers here on Yelp fail to recognize their passion and experience in this field. After two substantial purchases from HNE, in which prices were negotiated, I can only report positive exchanges. Both parties were treated fairly. My guess is that most of these less-than-happy reviews are a result of poorly informed customers making unreasonable demands. You will not be able to sell these guys junk -- they know their stuff. And if you overpaid for the junk you bring in the door, that does not change its value. Either that, or people do not understand how resale works. There must be a margin for the shop to profit! I love the vibe at HNE, I want to just hang out there and learn about the coins and shoot the shit with the guys. It is a fine establishment. I would recommend this place one hundred times over. I went there three weeks ago to buy my first one ounce gold coin. I was with my mother since she was the one that told me about this place for years as she in her past has worked for Pan American airlines and Continental airlines . So i wanted her to be with me because i was with her as a child when she would buy gold. i am an International Longshoreman and a Union member with the I.L.A . International Longshoreman's Association . I asked to see a one ounce liberty gold coin and was prepared to buy one but the salesman wouldn't show me the coin or even let me hold it even though there was a police officer in there as if i was going to steal it or something . I said i would like to see what im buying and he said its like that one over there in the case. Well there were a bunch of coins in the case. At that point i said hey its ok ill go home and think about it. My mother was angry and decided to go back in there and tell the guy about his customer service i said don't worry about it i vote with my dollars ill never go there again and i will be sure to tell every Longshoreman i know not to go there because they had already asked me where to go to buy nice gold in town and i had already told them about this place. Im black by the way yes i feel that's what is was . So two days latter i went to a store on I-10 called U.S. Coins And Jewelry and they were nice to me . As soon as i got in there i told them about my experience at this store and what do ya know the salesman at this store showed me a coin in my hand he said sure no problem. They were out of Liberty Eagles so he showed me a One Ounce Canadian Maple 24 K coin. I was happy about that and i bought that coin. I told him i was I.L.A. also on the way out the door and that i will be telling all member that i know to shop here. I called U.S. Coins today and told him i will be buying another coin this eek and reminded him who i was and he laughed and remembered me. The bald guy who works there acts like a bouncer at a club, and will rudely escort you to the door if youre curious enough to ask questions about coins. They're apparently to busy to act like they care. Ive known the shop for years. They are not only rude, but also dishonest, and behind the times. Good luck finding an email address on their website. I brought in an extremely rare and valuable coin. I am female, and all three men spoke down to me and were impolite. But sadly, that is too common an occurrence about which to yelp. What was vividly unprofessional and unforgivable is that one of them dropped my coin high and hard, and when I said, "Please, be careful," rather than apologize, he said "Aw, it's been dropped before." Went here to look at a Rolex, I called before and he wouldn't quote prices over the phone but did verify stock, so I drove over - I knew the specific model I was looking for and had done weeks of research for the fair market value for the particular model. If you know the model and age and other details it's not rocket science. Not only did the big ol' oafey looking skinhead guy (Mark I think) not even know that a 2000's Sea Dweller 16600 doesn't have a ceramic bezel, he then tried to sell me the exact watch I was looking for (Sea Dweller 16600) for 2000$ over everyone else on the market, not only that it was without the box and papers. The 116600 (New 2013 Model) does have a ceramic bezel but it's in a completely different price range... and the ones he had were NOT 2013 and newer... they were 2000-2007 and were the 16600 - I know the difference, obviously he didn't. They are all over town for thousands less, & When I was able to point one out local online (at a VERY reputable dealer, Rolex Authorized service center, and WELL known for Rolex sales in Houston since the 70's) for 2k less (Recently serviced, Box, Papers, 2 Yr Warranty) he got very rude and abrupt, and tried to treat me like I was stupid and didn't know what I was talking about, meanwhile he doesn't even know what's in his case, or pretends not to know so he can take advantage of people. I don't know what this dudes deal is but I was a very well educated buyer paying cash... so to me, it's amazing he stays in business. I have heard others saying similar things - so I guess he makes his living on the uneducated buyer/seller - My advice would be, know what you have or want and what it is actually worth before darkening his door, and be prepared to be treated inferior when you call him out on his shenanigans or... better advice would be to just stay away all together. Great place to buy and sell designer jewelry. They offer fair prices for both buying and selling. For those who say they're prickly people, it's just part of the second hand store persona. They know immediately what is and is not of value to them and don't want to haggle with a piece. If you don't get your price it's because they don't feel they can sell that particular item to their clientele, which probably stems from the rice area. I've gotten amazing prices on some pieces and they've outright rejected others. It's just business. I've bought several pieces over the years and can go in on any given day and find 3 jewelry items I must have. I sold back a ring a bought for only $300 less than paid so they're very fair with pricing. Overall I live coming here but the problem is I can't leave empty handed. read more

Purchased several BU US Eagles in 1980 and 1981. Most graded out at 63/63 but two were 65/65. Can not argue with the grade. Bought 25 American Eagles in 1984 and several American Quarters Silver Proofs to fill missing ones while we were overseas. Hve purchsed Buffalos recently. Have not been in for several years and now I remember why. I went in on Saturday afternoon and after browsing i asked to see a couple of high end currency one was a 1880 $1 brown seal that was listed as AU or almost uncirculated. I was handed the note and open the holder to exam the note. As I held it up to the light to the salesman grabbed it from my hand and said you can't examine the note unless you buy it.Then he walked away and would not acknowledge that we were even still there even after i tried to ask him a question. First off are you kidding me that you have to pay $1,800 before you can look at it. Second in the 10 seconds or so i held the note to the light it had at least 4 to 6 folds. The note at best would grade as a VF worth at retail pricing $500 on green sheet maybe $300. So they want you to buy it on there word. Even if AU maybe worth a retail price of $1,000. i have been collecting currency for over 30 years and own several of the finest know notes in the world so I do know what I am talking about. For those who do not know beware they will and can take major advantage of you!!!! read more

I took in an old collection of mixed coins left to me by the death of a family member to see what they might be worth and to cover them to paper money. Both Mark Minister and Jim Harris were on site at the time and were both very courteous and helpful in explaining to me which coins had real value, due to date and condition and which ones were only worth face value, due to the more current dates and silver content. The several sacks had been pretty much sort by denomination, but were mixed by date and condition. Both gentlemen took the time to sort though and separate those coins that had real value and those that were only worth stated face value, returning those to me. They then reexamined the coins they has isolated for date and condition and graded them into three classes, offering multiple times the state face value of each coin. The whole process took about two hours and I was VERY pleased with the prices they gave me and their patient, knowledgeable and friendly service.Thanks, guys. I can highly recommend your services.
