My mechanic sent me to Howard Auto Body for some cosmetic work to extend the life of my trusty 2010 Honda Civic. (Have you priced new cars lately?) I just picked it up and it looks brand new! Or rather, it looks like a brand new 2010 Civic. In addition to the contracted work, they removed the scuff marks from my bumper and from the passenger door where I'd scraped it against the trash bin. My car was returned to me spotless, inside and out. Truly exceptional work, reasonable price and professionalism all around. I am new to this neighborhood and had my car vandalized in the recent mass activity on Howard Street. I only had a little time to shop around and was referred to Tony at Howard Auto Body and Repair. I was blown away by his attention to detail, professionalism, and most importantly the final product. I drive a 2013 Honda sedan, purchased used a few years ago. After Tony and his team got done with their work it looks better than a brand-new car! The interior AND exterior were meticulously detailed. I should add that Tony found far more issues than my insurance company had found initially, he protected my car and finances in a big way. They even steam-cleaned the engine! They fixed 2 areas of damage that I brought the car in for and they not only touched up scratches and chipped paint all over the car they also washed it and cleaned inside. I feel like I have a new car! I was able to make an appointment right away and the work was done a day early. The final bill was the same as the estimate. I scratched up the side of my Volkswagen pretty bad on a pillar in our building's garage. Everyone said it would need buffing and cost at least $1000. Then I was referred to Howard Auto Body and Repair and the owner, Tony took care of my issue in a very honest and upfront manner. First of all, he said that he could keep the cost manageable and fix the scratches without costing too much. And if that wouldn't be enough I could always get the more costly option with buffing etc. Turns out, he was right. The scratches were fixed and my car looks amazing all for $250. And Howard Auto Body and Repair was able to conduct the repair in less than 3 hours with no previous appointment. I highly recommend Howard Auto Body and Repair. I'm unable to give 0 stars or I would. I took my car to HABR after my brakes failed. When this happened, I was really irritated with my previous mechanic, the car had a full tune up just months prior. I chose to go somewhere else and settled on HABR; they had good reviews, were close by, and were a minority owned business. In my initial interaction, they were really nice. They quickly provided a quote for the brakes and told me they found an oil leak. I gave approval for them to do both. Several days later, they followed up. They said there was a small crack in the engine block and provided a video as proof. They assured me they could easily fix the leak with sealant, and I approved the work. No problem. Four days later, HABR called and informed me that they were not successful in sealing the crack and that the engine had to be replaced. When I asked what happened they told me the failure was due to the car being old and rusty; they advised this might be due to the street conditions in Chicago. They also told me that the car had been like this when I brought it to the shop -- even though this simply was not true. HABR had provided the video of the cracked bolt as it was before they tried to fix the car but they never supplied an image of the car as it was after their tech tried to seal the crack. In fact, their tech had broken the bolt, and the car would not run. This was the cause for the engine failure -- but they never disclosed this, they omitted it. They blamed me. HABR were deceptive and presented false information in their diagnostic of the broken engine and quote; they omitted important, relevant information to fraudulently influence me to approve repairs. I gave them approval to order another engine -- under false pretenses. Furthermore, HABR never provided a timeline or any expectations so I followed up with them daily for progress. Tony got short with me after a few days and told me to stop calling. All in all, HABR had my car over 3 weeks. When I got the car back, the engine did not work, the car would not run, and the car had to be towed. It was filthy and coated with dust from being in their shop so long; it was hastily parked outside the garage, partially on the sidewalk and partially on the patch of grass adjacent to the curb. I asked Tony to please put it on the street so the tow truck could move it. Tony pushed my car across the street into a parallel parking spot -- and told me the 5 available spots in their parking lot where the tow truck could easily access the car were for their "good, loyal customers -- not me". HABR misrepresented the repair on the receipt. They also handed me a box with some bolts -- one of which was broken.. The car was immediately towed to Northside Toyota. NT did a diagnostic and confirmed the reason for the broken engine: HABR had, in fact, snapped the bolt. The engine hemorrhaged oil. They also confirmed that there was no indication of rust or corrosion (as HABR had advised). HABR were dishonest in informing me of what happened when they gave me an initial diagnostic and quote for the engine; they were dishonest in documenting the issue in the receipt they provided upon payment; and they were dishonest throughout most of the process. They continue to be dishonest. This was an awful experience -- "a nightmare", to quote NT. HABR's customer service was poor and sometimes abusive (Tony was combative; Tony and Alex were gaslighting me). The experience cost me a lot of money, time, and stress -- and I didn't have a car in total for 5 weeks. Please avoid! read more

I was excited to get my car fixed here rather than doing the work myself. They said that I could purchase the necessary parts elsewhere and they would install them. They quoted a price of $100 and the part cost $35 on Amazon. They claimed the part I purchased was defective, clearly not having given it a cursory inspection before they took the old part out. Now, my car was taking up space in their shop and they were adamant that I needed to get the proper part to them by the next day. They quoted the price of the part at about $175. (The same part was available at local auto part stores for around that price.) The final cost of the part they put in was $215, plus  $10 for incidentals brought the bill to $350. read more

I needed $4,000 worth of auto body repair to my front passenger side. First, Tony is open on Saturday, which was helpful for me. Toby was so responsive. He comprehensively explained how the process works. I didn't have rental coverage and he really kept in mind that I needed a quick turnaround. His shop did a really great job on my car-looks new! I had a little ding in the back from a previous fender bender, and he was able to repair that for free. I also got my oil changed at the same time so I didn't have to make an additional stop. I just transferred my license plates from TN to IL. In TN, we don't have to have front license plates, so I didn't have a front mount in place. I called up Howard Auto Body, and they told me to just drop on in. So, I went this morning. They had it done in minutes, and they didn't even charge me for it! This place is my jam. Got rear-ended on LSD, and these guys fought the opposing insurance for weeks to make sure I was getting the best fix. They kept me updated every step of the way. Finish was beautiful and I couldn't even tell what had been crunched the month before. Brought my beautiful black Malibu back many-a-moon later, after neglected the searing sound of my front brakes nearing their judgement day. They were done in a couple hours, and I picked it up the next day. Heh, and my dad suggested I just take it to one of those illustrious chain service centers around the corner. I agree with Richard B. It's too bad I could only give them 5 stars because they have a 10 star service. I had an accident a few weeks ago and took my car here because I saw all the positive reviews on Yelp. Antonio (the owner) was so helpful and explained exactly what to expect. After I dropped the car off, he even gave me a ride to the train station. The car was fixed in a very timely manner and it looked much better than before the accident. My insurance company screwed up the payment and the check for the shop was sent to me 2 days ago. So, I took the check to Antonio yesterday and he gave me a free car wash. I had to have my car towed here on the Friday of Memorial day weekend after my brake line rusted out. I thought for sure I wouldn't see my car until at least Tuesday or Wednesday...after the holiday. But lo and behold, these guys really came through! Not only did I get a call around 6pm on Friday explaining what needed to be done and what the costs would be, I was told it could be done before the shop closed on Saturday! What? I would actually have my car for the holiday? AWESOME! When I went to pick up the car Antonio was out front cleaning my cars windows; it had also been washed and vacuumed! Bonus! Once inside, Frankie gave me the details of the repairs and pointed out that the estimate was off by about $15. No big deal. He also volunteered to show me the cruddy brake line...which was indeed all rusted out. I know that one of my ball bearings is going (I have an Alero...this has happened before...grrr) so I'll be back to see you guys soon! Owner refused to honor 10% off coupon after I specifically inquired beforehand about it and was told that the coupon could be used for my body work. Without even denying what I was told, it was refused. It seems that squeezing an extra $86.50 out of a customer was more important that dealing honestly. Pretty much every shop in all of Chicago is "family owned" so that's hardly an attribute to write about. My repair was not impressive for the amount I paid. read more

I don't usually write these, but Antonio and his team definitely went above and beyond for me! I just found them on yelp after a bad accident nearby their location, (I have no affiliation) and I'm so glad I did. I've been hit 3 times in 2 months (thanks universe) and I've used Howard Auto Body for everything. What they did for me: -perfect body repair and paint job -replaced a bearing on my tire that maybe had nothing to do with the accident, but I'm not sure (on the house/no charge!) -gave me at-cost price for replacing a side mirror that had absolutely nothing to do with accident -extremely attentive and considerate service (I was waiting for my rental to pick me up and they noticed it taking too long, so they called, and sure enough the rental service didn't know they should be on their way. I would have sat there probably another hour 'til I figured that out) -took care of everything quickly and in the exact time they predicted -got a little k-clip keychain and nail file as like a souvenir, lol These guys are really on top of their game. I am going to have to revise this to a 2 star. I went to get my car detailed in April and they commented about the hood being a different "shade" than the rest of the car and that whoever did it didn't blend it in with the rest of the car. I didn't think much of it. I'm at a different body shop that my cousin recommended. As soon as one of the guys saw the car (dirty mind you) they asked if I had any work done and I said yes. He quickly commented that whoever did it did not do a good job and quickly said that the hood was not done well. As someone who pays another for a service because they do not have the knowledge or skills to do that certain service I expect high quality. But with these recent comments on the repair work done at this shop. I will have to give this a 2*. I will not be going back here. read more

When I stopped by one of the technicians came out to greet me, check out the car and provided me with a detailed quote on paper. I had such good experience with my meeting at Howard Auto Body + Repair that I decided I wanted to work with them after having receiving a similar quote from another local shop. They were available to get to work right away and had the car ready 24hrs before when I'd expected it. Tony and his men are so far the best auto body mechanics in upper Chicago I have ever seen. They are very honest and prompt. They tell you all the details and every single bit that you need to spend.
