These folks are great. Great service, honesty & customer focus. I originally brought in a flat tire on a busy Saturday morning, with no appointment or even a call-ahead. It was clear their schedule was more than full and I figured I'd have to wait until Monday to get my tire fixed. I dropped off the tire & they had it fixed in a couple of hours. It cost $20.00. They were friendly and I was very glad they could fix my tire the same day. I had a second car that needed 4 new tires. I had a specific tire in mind, but they were honest and said they couldn't match a price I got from another online retailer. No worries...I was able to ship the tires from the online retailer to the folks at Howard Auto & they mounted and balanced them for me (for a reasonable price). At the same time, I had them service the car, do an alignment and inspect the brakes and such. I expected the normal upsell of filters, wiper blades and service after the inspection, which a lot of shops do. The folks at Howard Auto didn't hassle me at all. They gave me an idea of how much break wear there was and gave details on what else they had inspected. In short, they were honest, but also made sure the car was safe to use. If you visit, you'll probably talk to George or Gary. They are both awesome people to deal with. I'll be going back for sure. 5 stars. read more

I've gone to Howard Auto now for two years. They've done a number of repairs on my car, now 12 years old. They've replaced a wheel bearing, ball joint, sway bar, alternator, rear brakes, alternator belt, and radiator. They also fixed a pesky emissions issue. Given the age and condition of my car, I know it will need regular repairs. It seems that every three months or so, I give Howard Auto a call. It's great to have a trusted auto shop in the neighborhood. They're right down the street from where I live. Gary and George are good guys. They do good work, their prices are competitive, and they're more than fair. They're conservative in their recommendations. I never leave wondering if they did more work than was really necessary. Their first repair was a front wheel bearing in early 2013. I went to several shops for an estimate on this repair. I was in the market for a good, trustworthy mechanic. Another shop in the area took a quick drive and recommended replacing both front bearings and both CV axles. Howard Auto replaced the one bearing. For two years now, I haven't had an issue with the bearings or axles. As you can imagine, this experience spoke volumes. If you need a good mechanic you can trust, give them a call. I wish I could give Howard Auto Repair a million stars. They provide amazing customer service and high quality, honest auto repair at reasonable prices. I live down in Lakeview and make the trek up here anytime I need anything done on my car. That is how awesome they are! In the summer of 2012, I bought an oil change groupon/living social type deal from them. From getting my oil changes performed at Howard Auto, I saw how amazing and honest George, Gary, and the crew are with their customers. So when my car started having issues in the fall of 2012, I knew I needed to take my car up to Howard. Since then I have had my brakes repaired, my power steering replaced, my rear light case replaced, handle replaced on my trunk, as well as little things like running diagnostics on my check engine light and topping off my fluids. They have always been incredibly fair on their pricing and do a great job. I never felt like I was being oversold on repairs. They have also pointed me towards the dealership when they though the repairs need could potentially be under a warranty, how honest is that?! I have never heard of an auto repair place that does that!! About two weeks ago, the electrical panel in my car started to dim out and then my car battery died. This was on the day that I was moving to a new apartment and I really needed my car to work the whole day. I called up George slightly hysterical and he calmly explained to me that either (a) my alternator maybe failing and I would need to get it replaced or (b) that the connection between the battery and the alternator slipped, but that the alternator was still fine and I just needed to reboot my battery. He then walked me through how I could get my car up and running again if it was option (b)--get it jumped, drive around for 20 minutes to let the alternator reset and start recycling the battery. Sure enough I was able to get my car running for the rest of the day with his advice. The car ran fine until this week, when my alternator finally died. This is a great place to get your car repaired. I am a single woman in Chicago and it was really scary for me to trust an Auto Repair shop I'm not familiar with, to repair my car. I had my oil change, tires rotated, and my muffler replaced. I was able to stop by and have them check out my car (for free) and they gave me a quote. Initially they quoted me at $280 (for a muffler and a gasket) and $75 for labor. The oil change was $28 and the tired rotation was $20. I asked if I could buy the parts and bring them in for my muffler and gasket replacement and they more than welcomed this option. I saved myself $100 by bringing in my own parts and I also had a 20% off coupon form their website, since it was my first visit/repair with them. Check their website for great coupons! Howard Auto Services also has a deal with anyone who has a Costco Membership; you get 15% off on select services, even better! I like Howard Auto Service. They are honest and they do good work. I feel like they give me really fair prices on maintenance and repairs. They are not as organized as some repair shops (ie, they've never asked me to sign an estimate when I've dropped my car off), but they are very courteous and professional despite their habit of scribbling my phone number on a notepad rather than typing it into a computer. I also wrote a positive review for a place down the street, Howard Auto Body and Repair, and I like them, too, but I prefer this shop because I trust them to give me a fair price more than the other shop. You're not going to find a flat-screen TV mounted in their waiting area like they have over at Howard Auto Body and Repair, but what I want from my auto shop is good work at a fair price, not a posh experience. read more

My experience with Howard Auto Service was excellent; I only had a battery replaced, but the staff was friendly and professional, the turnaround time was quick (less than a day), and the cost was great! They had a 20% off deal on Yelp, which knocked the price down even further. It was probably the best overall experience I've had at an auto repair shop, and I've (unfortunately) had to deal with quite a few. I ended up with a flat tire just down the street from this place. They were nice enough to send a truck out with air to fill my tire enough to get it to the shop (which saved me the cost of a tow). This place is great! George and Gary are always super friendly and take the time to explain any needed repairs to you in detail. They never push you to get something done that doesn't need it right away. I have been here a couple times to get an oil pressure safety switch replaced and an oil change. Prices are very reasonable. On many occasions, I have brought our cars in there with "auto repairinoia", thinking something was wrong that wasn't, and they won't fix anything that doesn't genuinely need fixing.
