I deliberated a bit on this one but decided to give it a whirl. Turned out to be quite decent. I prepared myself by going in with the usual low bar to more easily notice any unsuspecting positive or neat things. The grounds were fairly bland but otherwise alright. Same for the building. There is no elevator just stairs so heads up for those handicapped or otherwise disabled; not a factor for me. The interior may be/feel a bit dated/stale but it seems clean and safe, ya know? The first room I got reeked of what smelled like smoke. When I informed the front desk they helped me switch rooms w/o issue. Decent TV options. Breakfast bar was a pass; I rarely indulge in such bland fare instead opting for a small business cafe in town. The outside was awful, the paint and exterior look like they are disintegrating, what little grass lines the pavement is weed and the pavement itself is grimy, badly needs a pressure wash, trash in the parking lot too. Then the hallways are dingy and doused in faberge perfume no doubt to cover ancient carpet odors but it didn't work, wafting old smell everywhere. Now the surpise: The inside room was actually quite nice! It looked freshly painted, everything was clean, the bathroom was clean, the faucet and sink looked new, the grout was fresh and nice. The linen and towels were also fresh, beds felt firm and good. No idea what's going on here, maybe new ownership starting to work through fixing up a neglected place. If so they need to keep going and speed it up. The exterior is scaring the heck out of people when domeone has clearly done nice work on the rooms. I actually wanted to cancel and flee when we pulled in but my wife had pre-paid so we risked it. Problem is that even after being pleasantly surprised by the room, we still felt skeeved out when nothing inside the room deserved that. Our room had no wifi, we were told ours just happened to be the room that wifi didn't work in and I needed it for work and I wasn't given a suggestion on if they had a place to go where I could work it was sort of yeah it is what it is. They did not change the sheets when we stayed for 4 nights. The room had ants crawling around on the table and relay this problem at front desk, the clerk came back saying he/manager will have guy spray in the room. Didn't know if they did it or not because ants stayed. Clerk at the front desk in Monday afternoon was very rude when telling my husband about situation about staying extra night. One star is too much for this review, but I'm thinking when it's rented by the hour it's a 4 star. I strongly do not recommend staying at this hotel. I did not feel safe or comfortable during my stay, and the conditions were far below acceptable standards. The parking lot and surrounding area are poorly lit, with overgrown bushes and secluded areas that make the property feel unsafe. During my stay, there were visible signs of drug activity and prostitution happening in the parking lot, which made the environment feel more like a place where rooms are used for short-term or hourly purposes rather than a safe, standard hotel stay. I am a budget traveler for business. This should be a motel . The front desk person was very nice, so yay for that . Check in was easy. When I arrived however there were 3 police cars on site and an officer inside at one of the rooms. Not a great first impression. The whole place smelled like dirt and weed. The place needs to be updated badly I got into my room and seriously considered leaving. The bed had more than one long black hair in it and when I went to take a shower there was already an open used soap in the shower. the shower pan was clearly degraded and "repaired". This place is gross. it's in a bad area which I didn't know. I booked through expedia and for a few bucks more I would've gladly stayed elsewhere . I've been to this motel before it's always clean they serve breakfast they have a pool exercise room the staff is amazing it's in a somewhat good location there's many fast food places it's just a few minutes from town if you're driving close to the bus close to lots of coffee places close to weed again also they go above and beyond for their people and you have to have a key to get inside the building unless you go through the office and you also have to have a key to get in it's pet friendly many rooms that are clean they even have a disabled bathroom so it's got a lot of good things good parking lots on both sides and in the front you couldn't ask for better really the price is somewhat okay it's okay they have microwaves TV fridge ice machines vending machines for water soda and snacks don't forget the breakfast in the morning waffles with syrup cereal coffee juice milk bagels you should check this place out I love the Howard Johnson read more

Good- easy check in, night check in lady was nice and they allow pets...And that was about it.... The power in this place flickers and there is so much hallway and surrounding room noise. WiFi did not work, room was dusty, bugs turned up in the dog water over night... Breakfast was a bust unless you eat Raisin Bran and waffles- the maintenance man was a frequent flyer in the breakfast room... The pool is outdoor and does not open until June- which they might need until then to clean it out. This is not what I'm used to as a Wyndham hotel- this should be listed as a slum motel!! read more

Not a great experience. Not as good as the hotel used to be years ago. Liked · The girl we worked with was fantastic, always hustling for her visitors. She tried to make us happy when moving our room. She was probably the redeeming grace for this stay. Basically the carpets / hall were clean, as well. TV was easy to use and had an acceptable amount of channels to choose from. The waffle maker was nice, but every waffle stuck to the iron, due to no grease/spray being available to use. Disliked · 1st room given to us was not cleaned! messy, slept in bed, full trash cans. Our room was not even on the schedule to be cleaned that day, supposedly due to a new system. We were told she was trying to give us a discount due to this initial problem, but was unable to because we prepaid the room thru a 3rd party site. ?? Why should this be a problem? The 2nd room had lots of issues. In a handicap accessible room, the frig was so low to the floor it was almost impossible to reach anything in there. The frig door had no bars to hold the food/drinks on them. The food was constantly falling out every time we opened the door. The frig froze our apples, eggs, cucumber slices and waters Only 1 chair in the room for 2 of us to sit on. The toilet paper holder had no roller so we had to balance the roll on the grab handle. The area behind the toilet was not cleaned. The shower tiles were mildewed. The shower curtain was disgustingly full of mildew across the bottom. one reason for this is that the curtain rod was set a bit too low, allowing the curtain to fold on itself on the bottom of the shower, staying wet. Although the shower curtain was sufficient to do its job, it really was a cheap one. Cheap holders as well. There was NO WHERE to place a bar of soap, bottle of shampoo or gel, etc. We had to balance these items on the hand rail. The shower holder would not stay up and kept sliding down, making it hard to shower without holding the shower head. The HOT/COLD in that room has been INSTALLED BACKWARDS!! Hot means cold, Cold means hot! Silly! The toilet was not correctly seated or needs to be supported because it made a noise every time we stood up. The shelf with the sink didnt have sufficient room for our toiletries. Our room was NEVER cleaned once we got there, and no supplies were offered. I had to go looking for toilet paper after the 2nd day. The breakfast is basically bread and coffee/juice. I.e. bagels, waffles, sliced bread and cereal. That got tedious after 2 days. Only 2 types of cereal were offered...honey nut cheerios type, and a raisin bran. The only fruit available were apples, and some bananas. Bananas were very scarce. The walls were SUPER THIN. We heard everything all night, every night. The pool was closed even though the temp was over 80 outside. Very disappointing. WAY TOO EXPENSIVE for what we received! The posters in the lobby say "An overnight stop is a vacation at a Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge". This was a long ago notion.. These hotels don't live up to this any more....sadly read more

Worst service I've ever received. I made a reservation to stay overnight and called to confirm that the hotel had 24/7 desk service, as I'd be arriving late at night. I was told that the desk was open 24/7 and my arrival time would be no problem. But when I arrived, the door to the lobby was locked. I rang the bell several times, knocked and called the phone number. I stood outside as a single woman alone at night for 30 mins with no one answering. Eventually, I had to make a reservation at a nearby Motel 6 because nobody came to the door. When I called today to explain what happened, the employee had a bad attitude and tried to gaslight me and say "our doors are never locked, so I'm not sure why you rang the bell." The door was absolutely locked. I tried it multiple times. I'm still trying to get ahold of customer service, but this is by far the worst customer experience I've ever had. read more

Stayed here one night- glad it was only one! I've stayed at other HoJo's but this has got to be the one on the bottom. The front staff was nice enough, the bed was comfortable and the AC was relatively quiet. The 2 queen bed room was large enough to easily fit a twin sized air mattress for the little one. Parking was a bit tight. What we were disappointed with was the fact there were no elevators (at least we didn't find one) and the breakfast was barebones. No milk for the cereal, the bananas were green and the orange juice looked it has been sitting awhile in the container, having developed a ring on the sides. They did have a waffle maker. I do realize that we didn't come here for the breakfast but the room was also noisy and we could smell the kids smoking weed. The hallway and room was dingy. If I could give this location negative stars I would to warn the next family booking not to book at this location. Stained sheets, there was what looked like blood a flem on the walls. There was Crumbs and dirt throughout the whole hotel room. One of the previous hotel stayers wrote in the bible that was in the room that there were bed bugs. The room wreaked of stale cigarettes although it was supposed to be a non smoking room. The carpet was worn and coming up in multiple places. It's a step up from a slum. I give them kudos for such an easy check-in process. Other than that it wouldn't list at all for hotels I would stay at in the future except in an extreme emergency. Walls are paper thin, so you will most everything from flushing toilets to TVs to ladies cussing and screaming at their husbands/boyfriends. The breakfast is a continental breakfast, and you can tell that they just opened up bags of stuff in the cabinet and put it out. It's not what I would call edible in any case especially since right down the road is a Jack-In-The-Box where you can get the real deal. There was also no clear way to decline room service, as generally I don't do it until/unless I'm leaving. Lastly, I was in sheer disbelief at how small the toilet was. wow, is all I have to say. let's start with the positives: The lady that checked me in was very nice and I slept well in the bed and the shower head was huge, so which was enjoyable. Negatives: when I walked in, I was greeted by the foulest scent. The lamp shade in between the two beds was broken and hanging to the side with blotches of orange something on it (I think it was paint perhaps cause the wall was this strong bright orange yuck). the fan on the side of the wall in the bathroom was broken and hanging crooked as well. but the very worst was that when I laid on the bed I looked up at the ceiling and what appeared to be a large vomit stain that went from one side of the bed to the other. Disgusting. I went to Salem this last weekend to attend my daughter's graduation at Willamette and even booking in January I still got the only room left for the dates of graduation of any hotel in Salem so I was told by the call center that could see all availability for the area. I believe her class was 300 students so there was no option to move. I quickly went to the store and bought the most powerful Febreze spray I could find and doused the room hourly to keep the smell at bay. The pool was uncovered and extremely green as they have not cleaned it yet due to the pool not opening until June something they really need to tell you at booking cause me and my friend really wanted to swim. The breakfast was basic, I had bagels each day and my friend had an english muffin. The in-room coffee is undrinkable as well as the breakfast room and orange juice tasted like water. Their tv's were blurry on every single channel even in the breakfast room. The morning front desk almost plowed right into me walking down the hallway as I was distracted but he clearly saw me. The lady when I checked in said "at least we are the best 2-star budget in town" clearly seeing the disgust on my face when we checked in the lobby was gross. Oh, and the carpet in our room was ripped everywhere stained to hell. Our keys stopped working after day one of our two day stay which only was annoying as we had 10 minutes to change our clothes for graduation and our room was far away from the office. My friend's bed had a brown blanket under the comforter that had burn holes in them they did not provide housekeeping or replenish anything in our room. so yeah, all in all at least we had somewhere to sleep at night, but I wouldn't recommend this hotel to my worst enemy. From the first look it's ok. Then you get out of the car and you see all the trash and dirty windows and building. Cigarettes butts...just filthy! Check is was easy and fast then we go to the rooms. We booked 2 rooms. The first room was NOT clean. Hair all over the bathroom, old coffee in the coffee pot and trash on the floor. The second room was clean and decent. We also ALWAYS CHECK for bed bugs and the mattress had mattress had encased covers so safe there. We went back to desk to let them know one of the rooms was not clean. She apologized and gave us another room. The new room was cleaner but they floor was dirty and had no coffee pot. We asked for to be brought and when it was we had ask again for coffee and cream and sugar, which was meant with a snarky comment of you should have it and we said no there is nothing. Then lets not forget the police roaming the building and parked in unmarked cars in the parking lot and weird shady people sitting in their cars. I HAVE NEVER IN ALL MY HOTEL STAYS FELT I HAD TO USE THE DOOR LOCKS TO FEEL SAFE. I did here and still felt a bit uneasy. Also you can hear everything going on in the hall all night long. Don't stay here. It was really disappointing. I booked because I got a discount through work and this HoJo was sold as "upscale" and "perfect for business retreat." HA! First impressions count. My first impression was the woman at the front desk was on the phone not even acknowledging my presence upon entering. Luckily we didn't have any problems. Otherwise, I'm not certain anything would have been done. One of the three entrances is non-functional. So, if say you were on the top floor all the way at the end of the hotel (like us) you'd have to lug your entire cars-worth-of-luggages up the stairs all the way down to the end of the hall. So. Annoying. The "continental breakfast" consisted of a cramped room of two tables (for multiple families of four who wouldn't fit if they tried), two outdated cereals, and a brown banana. Nothing worth calling "breakfast" to be honest. Rooms don't have a microwave. So! If you have kids who are used to microwaves in for their popcorn and movie time? Don't count on the room to have one for you. To access a microwave, you have to walk all the way across the hotel to the "breakfast room" to use the one posted outside the door. No thanks. The pool was literally green in the middle of August. With two toddlers cooped up in a room, I hoped it'd be more swim-worthy. I didn't even bother trying to take them to it. The pool was locked and with how friendly the front desk lady was, I didn't feel like disturbing her quiet sitting-and-doing-nothing time. Upsides: the hotel faces a great, industrial alleyway that would be perfect to hook or buy drugs in (if you're into that sort of thing) and it IS near a Dutch Bros! They provided us a generous teaspoon of Matrix shampoo and conditioner for families of four free-of-charge! It doesn't have cockroaches (it was actually very clean) and the decor is nicely updated. No microwave, had to ask . AC barely works and it's 90° today. Dirty filthy,and building looks like it was from the Ronald Reagan era. Sounds like I wouldn't want to use the pool but it was covered so unable to use, even though the governor has opened up pools in Oregon to use during this Covid-19 season. The Howard Johnson chain would be ashamed if they were able to see this place. And yes, the garbage in the parking lots and near the doors, along with the street people goobering all over... I traveled solo, from Langley BC to Salem Oregon, for a funeral. I stayed for four nights. I stayed in room 221. The hotel is a walk up. No elevator. The room was clean and smelled OK. The window view was a wall. I opened the window and someone was smoking outside and I reported it.. So I didn't open my window the entire time. Used the air conditioner for air. The breakfast is OK.. Don't sit in the breakfast room. Sit in the lobby, pull the coffee table closer and ask for the remote. Way better. Staff was very nice and helpful. Bed was hard. But level. Brought my own pillow. If your a AAA or a BCAA member, you get a discount! Over all I would recommend this hotel. There are a few fast food places near by. And a shell gas station a block away. Horrible... so to start out we walk in side and we get checked in. Lady at the front desk was fine, kind of had a tweaker vibe but who knows? We walk down the hallways to our room and at night they are no longer hallways they turn into alleyways. I was waiting for someone to jump out and rob me. Then you flick on the lights and they start to flutter and flicker like a scary movie so your thinking anytime now the hashslinging slasher is gonna come out. Horrible stay.. The front desk manager didn't say more than 2 words to me, because they very rudly took a phone call while I was trying to check in. The room was NOT clean whatsoever. Sheets had stains and something gross was splattered all over the lamp shade. The most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept in, and a leaky and loudly dripping shower. Paper thin walls all around. Decent spot, pretty clean and maintained but this is an old establishment, it used to be a Motel 6. The pricing is a bit high for what you get but all in all not bad for less than $100 a night. The rooms are dated but functional. The bathrooms are typical, tiny toilet, thin towels, shower stall, and low water pressure. The bed was comfortable. The bedding and pillows seem to be new and were nice to sleep with. The facility is typical for a budget type hotel with long hall ways and perimeter parking. This place has no redeeming value and needs to be bulldozed. I was forced to give this place 1 star which I think is overrated! I am so grossed out! OMG where do I start. We were cold -16 degrees outside and so tired. We just wanted a warm room, warm bed, hot shower and to relax with a movie after a long day of driving. I didn't expect luxury, but I did expect the basics and cleanliness. No such luck. All the rooms are accessed through an internal hallway which has no temperature control. We were freezing in the hallway. The dingy dated lighting fixtures, dated bulbs, gross carpet, and prison paint color wreaking of cigarette smoke made it feel so ghetto. Once we got to our room the show really got started. It smelled of years of dirt and grime. The comforter was dirty and had spooge on it. The curtains were painted with wall paint across the bottom 4". OMG THE HEATER DIDN'T WORK!! After 90 min. of waiting for heat and 16 degrees outside we just couldn't get warm and couldn't take it any more. The floor was redone with tile not carpet only making it feel colder. We were so miserable and the room was just so icky dirty. That's when we asked for another room. Now onto room number two. We had grungy dirty carpet now and it stunk! The heater worked well. Thank God. Lighting again was insufficient, dated, and made the space feel dirty. Now we had no TV...no cable and no local channels. It didn't work!! I was so happy to have heat that I thought I'd tolerate the no TV by entertaining ourselves with a film on my phone using the complimentary Wi-Fi. Here's where the story gets even better...no such luck on using Wi-Fi. Their band width is so insufficient that I couldn't use my phone!! Oh my God just put me out of my misery. Well let me start by saying tje hotel claims handicap accessible but reality is.. It isn't! I am a caregiver of a paraplegic and she has a manuel chair( non motorized) and for 1 there be no way she could get outside by herself. Doors do not have a button for automatic opening and they are heavy as heck. Then the hotel claims to ve serving breakfast during this whole pandemic and charging full price with no breakfast at all. Claims pool but pool is closed and then the pool is no where any kind of disability accessible. She just recently stayed there last week and housekeeping didnt ask us if we needed anything for the room except for 1 time they came to the door at 4pm offering to take dirty towels and garbage. The duration of the stay was 7 days. I as her caregiver had to chamge the sheets in the beds and this was the king suite and mopped floors and cleaned bathroom. Im not housekeeping so Why did i have to do that? Great question? So for anyone to be charged full price for 1 star service claiming to have amenities that are not available is ripping the public off. All lives matter and so do the disabled!! read more

In Salem, you have a choice: 1) one nice but expensive place, 2) many middle-of-the-road hotels often in inconvenient locations, 3) scary. I put this HoJo in the second category and use it because it is cheaper and closer to downtown than the others in the same category. I do not have high expectations for it, but it provides a safe, comfortable place to sleep. Do they have high quality sheets and flat screen TVs? No. But I don't come here to watch TV. I've never had a problem with front desk staff. The general manager checked me in this time and he let me check in really, really early. A little courtesy and friendliness goes a long way. I've never used the pool or eaten the breakfast so I can't comment on those. But it's an outdoor pool and it's Oregon so use your imagination. Salem has great breakfast joints where I prefer to sit and relax, plus I value my sleep and sanity more than jockeying for hotel continental spreads. read more

We tried HoJo's again and, this time, the experience was not as satisfactory, so I'm lowering the rating and increasing the price range. Part of the experience this time was the breakfast. The first time there, we ate breakfast with friends at a nearby restaurant. This time, instead of merely looking in on HoJo's breakfast room, we ate breakfast there. Based on that experience, I'd recommend any nearby restaurant. The raisin bran, milk and muffins were the only things that fell into the mediocre/normal range for economy hotel breakfasts. The fruit was limited to bananas, all green. The OJ was some kind of bizarre mixture that looked like an attempt to duplicate an orange cream soda in a blender. The coffee was poor. There was a waffle maker and some batter that looked like it had been sitting out for quite a while. That was OK; we didn't want waffles. But that's why I raised the price range, by the cost of a good breakfast. When we first entered our room, it was dead cold. Apparently, the managers heat nothing that is not occupied, including the hallways. Their chilly economy seriously undercut any feeling of welcome, to say nothing of that worthy hotel desideratum, the feeling of "a home away from home." And although the room appeared clean and in most other details was similar to our previous room -- except that it lacked a second mirror -- something about it gave me a sinus headache. Finally, the cellphone reception was poor to non-existent both in our room and in the breakfast room; and the TV did not work. The lack of an idiot box was no big deal so far as we were concerned, because we're always happy to read; but for those who don't pack a few pounds of books in their luggage, an inoperable TV, even if replaced, could be an annoyance. read more

I attempted to book a room through hotels.com. My phone died mid booking. I did not think the reservation went through. I discovered the next day that the reservation did indeed go through. I never checked in and nor did I stay there. Management refused to issue a refund. I'm sure housekeeping was happy the next morning when they discovered that my room was completely untouched! read more
