I love this place and the people who took care of us. We had a party of ten and everything was very good. What stood out to me the most was how out of the way the employees went for us. I ordered something to go also and paid for it and forgot about it and left in a hurry because I had the tickets for an event we were attending on the next block. I didn't get his name but a nice man actually came to the event to find the person who forgot their takeout order. The server remembered me saying we were going there next. He went back and got my takeout and brought it back to me. You just don't find as many people that nice who cares as much these days. read more

I came here unplanned and was pleasantly surprised. The bartender helped me pick out a delicious glass of wine, yes I had two glasses worth so I know it was good! I had their warm veggies salad which was amazing! I never would have thought a warm salad would be good but it worked perfectly! I paired the salad with a cup of their gumbo and finished it off with bread pudding ala mode! All the food I had was amazing and my boyfriend really liked his shrimp po-boy. We had the Catfish, sesame chicken, gumbo, jambalaya and the bread pudding. The jambalaya rice was very overcooked, the dish was very mushy. It tasted like jambalaya but was nothing to call home about and the serving was small especially to be considered a stand alone entree. The gumbo had the appearance of traditional gumbo but lacked the flavor I was looking for from a place with "bayou" in the name. Catfish was good. Bread pudding possibly the best thing we had and it arrived cold. I may give it another try but not anytime soon. Our server was very kind and the restaurant was practicing social distancing, constantly cleaning, wearing masks and making sure patrons did too, that made me very comfortable. Went here last night with Hubs for my birthday. My husband knows how much I love New Orleans. It's my second home. I used to travel there for personal and work at least 3x a year. With that said, if you are claiming to be a Creole restaurant then you might can fool some people but for a want to be Nola girl, you're going to have to come hard to pull the wool over my eyes. I played it safe and started with only appetizers and trust me that is where I stayed. I ordered the fried oysters which lost me at one bite. It was awful! I ordered the fried shrimp and the barbecue shrimp which were both appetizers. It was horrendous. Tasted sooooo bad. My husband ordered the crab cakes and from the looks of it They used the same batter for the oysters, shrimp and crab cakes. He kept saying it was good. And he was waiting to see my reaction and I didn't want to hurt his feelings so I just nodded my head. This place is NOT your New Orleans food. The bartender is really nice and fits the vibe perfectly . Just getting back from New Orleans, I was not ready to say goodbye to the best food I ever tried ! I love this bar. I agree. It's more of a bar atmosphere than restaurant. However, their food is fantastic and the absolute best thing about Howe's is the staff--super friendly and they always make you feel right at home! My favorites are the Crawfish Etouffee, Baton Rouge Crawfish Cakes, Pearl River Pasta and of course, the mac n cheese! Try the Abita Turbo Dog on draft--all the way from NOLA, but make sure you save some for me! read more

During my first time here, I got the gumbo as a side and the fried catfish as an entree. Catfish was fried nicely and not overly dry. The gumbo was good. Unfortunately, nothing about my dining experience completely stands out so it ends up being just average. Being from LA, theres a lot of better options back home. The flavors are alright, but for me it was leaning more towards the bland side. When I think of Cajun-Creole food, I am expecting a punch of flavors and spices in which I did not get. I think if I do ever get a craving for gumbo, I wouldn't mind coming back. I also ordered the bread pudding with ice cream to share with the table and that was enjoyable at best, but again it was nothing special. Service was ok. WHAT HAPPENED?!?! I always recommend this place to my friends. It's not just like, i tell them about it. I bring them here with me. This is the first time Howe's let me down. Everythings changed. the crawfish wasn't as fresh as before, also wasn't spicy like it once was. my friend's chicken creole, which he thought was a safe order, turned out to be a ravioli hot mess. the only edible thing was the chicken. my dish was supposed to be filled with rice with a side of corn, but it was filled with all corn and a tiny bit of rice. and everything tasted every watery the creole salad lacked flavor as well. the bread pudding also changed for worse. it wasn't just us. the lady sitting next to our table also complained about everything being not the same as before. we asked the waitress if they got a new chef. she tried to give us some bullshit reason about mardi gras celebration and the batch is different since then. what?! i don't even understand it. she gave us a 15% off and the pudding was on the house. but still. i really just want the good food to come back. read more

I adore Howe's Bayou. I am remiss in waiting this long to post a review for this place - it's one of the hidden, delicious gems in Ferndale. Here's the breakdown: The good: Howe's has an old fashioned, dark, small interior that would fit in well in New Orleans proper. A large, gleaming wooden bar fills much of the small dining room space. Howe's has a pretty solid drink menu, but the real star is the food. Last night I had a cup of the gumbo (my favorite). It was delicious and rich as always, and is served with cornbread that wasn't overly sweet or dry - in other words, it was perfect. For dinner I had the jambalaya - I know most jambalaya has shrimp and is made with shrimp stock; I don't eat shrimp so I am always happy that Howe's has chicken and smoked sausage in it - soooo good! I also had a Howe's martini that was made with Baileys and bourbon, which was the perfect ending to my meal. I'll definitely be back, again and again! read more

I feel so ripped off! Read the reviews and was excited to try this place. Ordered my food. Picked up my meals and immediately felt like I had been had. I tried the jambalaya, chicken voodoo, and gumbo. Chicken voodoo was tasty, but TINY. 4 little pieces of breast meat. Couldn't even give me the full breast. Jambalaya was ok. Nothing to write home or yelp about. But edible. Gumbo was ok too. I thought a bit tastier than the jambalaya, but I am coming from the south so maybe I have higher expectations. I'm not from the south. I've always loved Howe's Bayou a lot, it seems like an adventure every time I go, since I'm not familiar with many things on the menu. So I put them to the Ultimate Test- when my friend from Louisiana came to visit, I took him there. He was prepared to be disappointed. Not only did he love it, he said it was surprisingly authentic! It's cute. If you're looking for some low country fare with good service in a casual (almost dive bar - but in an endearing and not dirty way) environment, you've found it. You won't find the latest and greatest here - there's no line to get in, no loud music, no kitschy atmosphere- just good food at a good price with good people. As someone who's a huge fan of Cajun/Creole food, Howe's Bayou is very disappointing. The food here is not made with love. First of all, the place itself is dingy and has a weird, moldy smell. I thought it was an off day but I've been here twice and the smell was still there. Sometimes I can excuse a dingy interior as a quaint little hole-in-the-wall quirk but only when the food is phenomenal. The cornbread is dry and has no flavor. We took one bite and left the rest. The crawfish bisque tastes like canned "cream of (frozen) crawfish" soup. Shrimp po boy is mehhh. The gumbo, a quintessential New Orleanian dish, was slimy and not good. I've had gumbo in a lot of different eateries in NOLA and no matter how bad the restaurant was, the gumbo was the one thing that was always on point. Not the case here. The mussels were pretty meaty and plentiful but it tasted like they didn't bother with the broth, they just doused it in garlic. I'm giving Howe's 2 stars because of the service, which was friendly and accommodating both times I've been here. read more

We tried this place tonight for diner & it was great! Place was tiny but had a great ambiance. Staff was very friendly & accommodating. Nice place to meet up for dinner or drinks. My daughter is a teenager so for my family this place is okay but I wouldn't say that it is kid friendly if you have little ones. I couldn't decide between the steak tips & voodoo sauce over rice or the grilled shrimp in voodoo sauce over rice so the waiter suggested I get both in a combo bowl - it was delicious. Great flavor! Not heat hot, but had a little kick to it. Just how I like it My daughter (14) went with a bowl of gumbo. She loved everything but the color lol idk what she was expecting it to look like but she enjoyed it anyway. PS I tried it & it was really good. My boyfriend went with the creole chicken & jumbo shrimp. ( I had a tiny bite of the chicken, it was good as well) We all agreed the cornbread was too dry for our liking but not all cornbread created equally lol For dessert my bf went with the key lime pie ( his favorite not mine) but my daughter & I shared the hot fudge brownie sundaes= on the $$$ . I had high expectations for Howe's since it had been recommended by multiple people. I was very disappointed. First I will say even though it was busy and there was quite a wait to even order our food, the server was very apologetic and even gave us a complimentary dessert. My disappointment was not with the service. The food itself was underwhelming. I ordered the voodoo shrimp over green hot salad. The shrimp had good flavor but it definitely wasn't the best shrimp I have had. The green salad was interesting. It was more like a stir fry vegetable mix with some arugula type lettuce mixed in. My boyfriend ordered the creole shrimp and we were told to order it because it was spicy and had good flavor. There was zero spiciness to this dish. It still tasted ok but just not what we were hoping for. We had a side of Mac and cheese and also collard greens. Both were good but not great. The cornbread that came with the meal was also underwhelming- dry and crumbly. I will say that the bartender made some drinks for us and they were great. I don't think we will be back since there are so many other great restaurants in the area. read more

I had to give this 5 stars just based on the catfish alone. Seriously. SERIOUSLY the best piece of fish I've eaten in years. This place is just ok. It took over 45 minutes to get our food and when I got it it was barely warm, which is odd because the other two people I was with just got appetizers. I order the perch and was confused when I got it. The menu says pan seared but it is breaded and probably friended or baked. Drinks were ok, nothing worth coming back for. I visited the bayou a few weeks ago while waking down Woodard. The place is very intimate with a easily missed entrance if just driving by looking for a place to eat. This is one of the best places to eat in Ferndale. I normally order the Voodoo Chicken, which is amazing, but decided to try something else and ordered the Voodoo Shrimp on rice and it was just as good. The Voodoo sauce is so tasty I would pour that on everything if I could. The collard greens and garlic mashed potatoes taste homemade and are just delicious. I loooove me some catfish. Yeah, yeah, tell me they're bottom-feeders. I know, I know, just please don't ruin this for me! I love it fried or blackened, with dirty rice or on a po'boy. I just really love the stuff. When I'm chilly, I crave comfort food. I tried to stop into the Fly Trap for lunch, but it was jam-packed (as it should be!), and I had a giant bag I was lugging along with me. Didn't want to be obnoxious. So, I sauntered on down (or rather, slipped on down, yeesh, icy!) the sidewalk to Howe's. I hadn't been here in a few years, but the last time I was here, it was with a fellow who actually worked on a catfish farm (fishery?) down south. For real. He is/was a sweetheart and was in a band we were playing with nearby. His assessment of the catfish was positive, so I figure my tastebuds must not be steering me wrong, here. I honestly haven't tried too many of the other dishes -- the whole point of comfort food is that it's what you always go back to/for, right? The sides are decent. Whomever mentioned the giant block of mac 'n' cheese isn't exaggerating. It's plenty tasty, but Slow's has ruined me for mac and cheese - I still think Howe's trails behind Slow's mac. But the catfish? That's almost a tie. And in my book, that's great! The cornbread is a bit dry for my tastes, but then again, I really like rich cornbreads, more like spoonbread. It was pretty quiet when I was in there -- not much of a lunch crowd, but I kinda enjoyed that fact. I don't know that this is someplace I'd seek out, but when it's convenient, and I am cold, in search of some hot comfort food? It'll do just fiiine! read more
