We asked for Peruvian food recommendations and they told us China Chilcano. But we remembered Oyamel WAS NOT good Mexican food. So we asked for a place that was more authentic. THIS WAS IT. Its like going to your Grandmas house and your Abuelita and tias cook for you. We wre amazed at the many things on the menu. Trying to be considerate, we asked what they had ready. They said they make everything from scratch. So the prep took a little longer, but i had a huge churrasco with grilled pork, beef, chicken and chicken heart. The ceviche is BOMB. everything is good. Admittedly, my purpose for coming to Huascaran was to try guinea pig for the first time. The restaurant itself is relatively tiny and looks like a small town house from the outside. Inside, the dining area is small, but homely. The staff are extremely friendly and provide a warm and welcoming "mom and pop" dining atmosphere. I was definitely surprised by the food quality. My guinea pig was delicious and my girlfriends lomo saltado was by far the most authentic and tasteful I've ever eaten at a Peruvian restaraunt. The menu selection is huge and there is a plethora of deserts on hand for an after dinner treat. On that note, it is one of the only Peruvian restaurants I've been to that offers milhojas (a fluffy pastry filled with dulce de leche). If you go, I strongly recommend you take some home and warm them up when your tummy craves a late night snack. Food quality was top notch and worth the price. The Verdict: Huascaran may look tiny, shabby, and remote at first glance, but don't deny yourself the opportunity to try the bounties of flavor that await within. This place is undeniable proof that the family owned restaurant business has a life that a corporate chain can never achieve. Highly recommended to all. read more

Two of us came here around 8pm on a Saturday evening after looking for non-chain Peruvian food. I was very pleasantly surprised that although located almost in a parking lot, it is very much a hole-in-the-wall location. It's a tiny location that immediately reminded me of some of the mom and pop restaurants I've visited in South America. Soccer/football was playing on TV and there were fliers and newspapers available if you wanted to become more involved in the Peruvian community in the area. We had no waiting at all to get a table; once seated, the waitress came out. The order we placed was four appetizers that we shared. The first waitress we had took down the order and while seeming to understand what we wanted, soon, when someone else came over, we found out the first waitress hadn't understood what we ordered except for the drinks. All in all, our meal was filling and good. The ceviche lacked in flavor; I have and could make better. The cook was good about removing one ingredient from the other dishes for us and the service was prompt and attentive without being hovering. While I wouldn't make a beeline to return here, I certainly wouldn't avoid it, either. It's a solid bet with pretty authentic (but not spicy!) Peruvian food. The prices are a little on the high side of normal (but this is fine for me, given that it's a mom and pop place) and the parking is a bit wonky, but certainly worth a shot if you've a hankering for Peruvian food and are not far away. read more

A mixed bag here at Huascaran. 4 star: the fish ceviche. $12 sounds like a lot to pay, but it is a literal mound of fish. Cold sweet potato may also look weird, but it's actually quite nice. 3 star: lomo saltado.The amount of fries, rice and onion far outweighs the meat but otherwise its a good homestyle lomo - the meat could have been cooked a little less IMO 2 star: The churrasco was thin, bland and overcooked 1 star would be the decor, it feels like you're eating in an old store room of sorts. I don't expect all restaurants to be hip or fancy, but I don't think Huascaran is even trying anymore. read more

My fiance and I came here in search of ceviche. We showed up around 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon. Of the ten-ish tables in the place, two others were occupied. We ordered an horchata ($3) while waiting for our food. Service was fast and friendly. We were unexpectedly served two piping hot rolls right out of the oven to start. They were perfect! We also got some green spicy sauce and some limes to accompany our meal. We ordered the ceviche de pescado ($10.95) as an appetizer, but what we received was a non-appetizer portion of fish. Between the mouth-watering, spicy, perfectly flavored ceviche and the sweet potato and maiz accompaniments, the two of us were full after finishing this. However, we had also ordered two pupusas ($1.75 each) that were stuffed with bean and cheese and chicken. These were also larger than I'm used to and were delicious. This was one of the best meals I've had in the DC area. It doesn't hurt that it was so inexpensive too! read more

I came here for a Sunday breakfast bordering on brunch A lot of restaurants don't do breakfast/brunch until 11am or so (my stomach couldn't wait that long), this place opens at 6am. I had the Desayuno Tipico (breakfast tipical) but don't let the name fool you; it's likely not your typical breakfast. It came with avocado, eggs, skirt steak, sausage, a big chunk of cheese, and plantains (more or less; everyone at the table was sharing so I may have gotten things mixed up). Others at the table ordered some of the other Desayuno meals, and everyone was full or stuffed by the end of it: you've been warned! All the food was very tasty, the service was good, it wasn't crowded, nothing to complain about. I'd highly recommend this as a breakfast destination. read more

The ceviche was not seasoned. I personally can make ceviche better then that. The crema de camarones had too much oil, also did the tallarine saltado. The serves was not good at all. Small place, the food was really good. My boyfriend felt like having Peruvian food so I googled Peruvian near us and this mom and pops restaurant showed up. They only have 4 tables or so, Fútbol on the tv, and live music on weekend nights. We ordered lomo saltado, tacu tacu, tamal, and millojas for dessert. I would definitely come here again. We ordered take out. We called 10 minute ahead and it was ready when we got there. We usually have to drive to Maryland to get Peruvian food, and I'm not talking about Peruvian chicken, but actual dishes. Will come again, great way to practice my Spanish. read more

The main reason to drop by this local mama-y-papa Peruvian joint would be for the weekend breakfasts. Went in Sunday morning and perused the selection of Andean and Criollo breakfasts (including such items as cracklings, blood sausage, sweet potato, etc). Ended up getting a tasty and rather large pork tamale ($4) which honestly could've been a small breakfast on its own. But being greedy and curious I also got a potato dish which turned out to be less interesting: just sliced boiled potato with a cream sauce and eggs. But the tamale was good, so was the fresh strawberry juice and fresh-baked bread. I also got an order of "picarone", Peruvian doughnuts with a little cardamon and a molasses dipping sauce. Next time I'll give the criollo plate of breakfast meats and starches a try. The full menu was quite large and seemed to have the standard Peruvian assortment of potatos, pastas, and huge skewers of meat. Worth noting is that they do indeed have roasted rabbit, and I might go back for that as well. Ambience is clean but a bit like a suburban office with the gray carpet and white walls with fake plants, but it's well-run and staff is friendly and helpful. Overall nothing amazing, but reasonable prices and tasty chow with a few neat little specialties you don't see everywhere. read more

A nondescript setting in the bleak strip store location of Glebe Road does not indicate what a gem this restaurant is. I've been three times, tried their soups and main dishes and fruit drinks, and have always come away full and happy. Unless you know Peruvian cuisine, you will have to experiment with the dishes, since their names often give little clue about their flavors. This is not cheap rotisserie fare, but an actual family-run enterprise that gives you a great deal of authentic cuisine for modest prices. A gem, you can stop in and have a superb feed in a movie setting: classic roadside eatery with a grandmother or mother in the kitchen making sure you eat as well as any of her children. read more

Several years ago, my children and I had the opportunity to visit Peru and had a wonderful time experiencing the culture, food and traditions for the few weeks that we were there. I had been searching for a traditional Peruvian restaurant on and off for some time in the DMV. Huascaran is the place to be. The service was good and the staff polite. I'm Peruvian and I know my food. This place doesn't look great from the outside (rundown), and the parking lot is a bit tight; however, their breakfast is delicious. The atmosphere transported me back to Huaraz, Peru in 1996. This is a small and modest place so don't expect something big. However, it is worth checking out. If you want good Peruvian style breakfast this is your place. The waitresses are very polite and bilingual. They have 3 tv's playing Sur-Peru and soccer, and they also have a selection of latino newspapers. My boyfriend and I have gone to Huascaran six times already, and they have never disappointed us. So far, I had picarones (weekends only), pan con huevo, pan con queso fresco, pan con aceitunas, especial (camote, chicharron, tamal, relleno) tamales, jugos (surtido, especial, papaya). I love it and it makes me feel like I'm back in Peru. I totally recommend this place, you won't regret it. read more

when I first visited this restaurant in 2004 with my future wife on our 5th date I was extremely happy with the food the quality and the quantity of the food! after my first visit there were many more and again the food was excellent but the owner always with a strange bitter behavior and not a sign of a smile in her face! 6 years ago we had our first incident with the owner of the restaurant. We order food to go and our order was the half reduced and 27 dollars more! When I asked for explanation about my order she was in polite extremely indifferent and aggressive! We stop going there for a couple of years. Unfortunately during that period of time we haven't been able to find a good restaurant with Spanish food!we decided after a while to give another chance to the specific restaurant! the fist 2 or 3 times the food was good but the 4 th one here ago again! smaller portions worst quality meat no receipts ever and bad attitude and manners from the uneducated owner!we stop going again for more than 4 years! a couple of weeks ago was my birthday and I decided to give a last chance to the place so we called ahead for an order to go they told me 25 minutes I said ok and I asked besides the food for a Spanish dessert called picarones the lady told me we don't have it! after 40 minutes I arrived in the restaurant asking to pay for my order they haven't even put my order yet! Same owner same unpleasant unprofessional waitresses propably family so many years and the worst thing they were a patry of 7 people eating picarones ! I asked the young girl why you told me you don't have it she wasn't even capable of answering back or apologize to me for lying! and that's not all I was waiting 1 hour and 19 minutes for my food at the end no receipt not even a cash register and the place dirty than ever! I couldn't remember how many violations I counted this day first and most importantly very dangerous place for the public health secondary no receipts and in that case irs would closed down the place immediately . I apologize if I am too detailed but I would like to feel how I felt disappointed and betrayed. after 1 hour and 19 minutes I opened to check my food the first one she sliced one piece of meat and she charged me double the other portion of food was 5 shrimps for 20 dollars smelling bad and she charged me for tax without a cash Register without a legal receipt and the worst thing this unpleasant woman she run this business for years without anybody doing nothing to close down this place! it is very sad people like her and many others getting advantage the truly American system the shelter ,the compassion and the hospitality that this country provided to them and doing what they r doing for years! thank you for dedicate time to read my post and I hope one day all these rotten businesses they will no more exist ! read more

Don't let the exterior fool you. Even though it looks like a little kitchen in someone home it has actually decent Peruvian food! I was looking for a new place after Campo closed and gave this a try. I had ceviche (of course) , jaleo mixto, and picarones. The first thing I noticed was the fish in the mixto and ceviche was fresh, not always true of every restaurant. It really makes a difference and the food was very good and tasted home made. The picorones were hot but just ok. There are only a couple tables so try to get there when it's not busy. You can get take out but it won't be as good as when it comes right out of the back to the table. I wish the owner would invest a little in the dining room and expand a bit because it's pretty tiny. But the food is as close to a regular restaurant in Peru as I have had here. Not necessarily the best but authentic. It's pretty darn good though so give it a try. read more

I returned to try another dish but this time I asked the greeter of the restaurant what the specialty dish of the restaurant say. She replied with Seco de Res. This is a typical dish of Northern Peru composed of slow cooked beef in a cilantro (and spinach?) sauce served on a bed of delicious cannellini beans with a side of white rice. I ordered it and loved it. The aromatic dish was authentically prepared and presented beautifully. As a result I updated my rating from 4 to 5 stars. You can be sure I'll be back! read more
