After my local joint shut down, I've been desperate to find a new charcoal chicken place. This place is no-frills and counter order. You certainly don't want to eat here unless you have to. I would recommend only for takeout... If I were to recommend and I don't. The beans were bland. Their rice was fine. Now let's get to the chicken... Super yummy rotisserie chicken place. My fries were crispy and very hot, the chicken was seasoned nicely and was moist with crispy skin, and the plantains were excellent! Very good service, staff were great in helpful me find something safe to eat with my severe shellfish allergy. They do serve shrimp here but they do not fry it, so you can still eat the fries and plantains because they're not fried with shrimp. $1 extra to add plantains to meal, so half chicken with two sides (fries and plantains) was $17, which is pretty standard. Clean dining room, plenty of seating, plenty of parking when I visited. You can probably order in English, but they couldn't really understand detailed food allergy questions in English so I switched to Spanish. I was in the area needing a dinner to take home. I came to this restaurant around 7:30pm and ordered quarter chicken meal to go. The restaurant was quiet and already cleaned up. So I was wondering if I came around the closing time? But they gave me delicious meal! Even though I had to drive 30 mins home, everything was still warm, crispy and fresh in the container! First, their portion is beyond generous! It became 2 meals for me. Second, I had the best yuca! It's such a simple meal but this restaurant made it different and better!!! And it was only $11. I just stopped by and I am at a lost for words. I couldn't believe how declious this hole in the wall hidden location was! My to go order consisted of a side order of sweet plantains and a chicken soup.Once I got home I was amazed how sweet the plantains were and the home cooked taste of the chicken soup. So juicy and well seasoned...they had to have marinated a long time! Where they could improve is on how the place presents itself. The inside does nothing to make you want to eat there. The tables needed a wipe down. The woman who took my order was nice and when I looked back toward the kitchen area I did not get the impression it was dirty, just that the owner didn't care too much about the appearance. A couple of years back, I used Yelp to help me find the best Peruvian chicken nearby. As far as chicken goes, it was not a success. Even at the highest rated places, I was encountering dry and/or meh chicken. My search eventually landed me at Sardi's in Maryland, but even then I was convinced there was better out there. However these efforts detoured me on a search for the best Lomo Saltado (which I found at Mi Rico Peru in Franconia, along with the best yuca humanly possible, imo.) I say all of that because I went to Best Pollo Rico today and found what I was looking for years ago--and a renewed inspiration to find the best pollo. Since my search has only just started again, I can't say definitively, but I think Best Pollo may be true to its name. My pollo la brasa was incredibly moist and the skin had that tasty, stick-to-your-fingers caramelization that I was looking for. It was just so juicy! And flavorful even without the green and white sauce, though they do complement the dish beautifully. The chicken platter comes with two sides and I got fried yuca and a salad. For about $10, I got half a chicken (two meals worth), the two sides and a soda. The salad was nice enough...lettuce, radish and cucumber. And the yuca was really yummy, an easy second to the yuca mentioned above...and I've tried a lot of yuca in my time. As a side note, the menu showed in the images here doesn't cover all they offer. They have a handwritten menu with many entrees on it, including lomo saltado and some other stuff my Spanish isn't good enough to figure out. Consider this a 4.5 star rating. I didn't want to quite give it a five-star rating, because the yuca, while really good, was not the best I've had. And the sauces, also quite good, could maybe use a little work...the white/yellow sauce was not as good as others I've tried in the corridor. But overall, I was quite pleased with my first visit to Best Pollo. It certainly won't be my last and I will definitely want to try their lomo saltado, too. But it's going to be a while before I'll be able to go in there and not order the pollo la brasa. It is REALLY good. read more
