Second visit since they've opened. Lisa was our server today and she was wonderful. Super welcoming, helpful, quick, and just a happy nice person. First time I tried the Californian Benedict and loved the addition of balsamic glaze. This time I got the Scramble with country fried steak. Both were full of flavor and needed minimal addition of pepper. It's a busy place but they turn tables over quickly without you feeling rushed. Kooky decor reminds me of Disneyworld's Bayou but it was fun hunting for gators. Will return again and hoping visit 3 and beyond are equally as delicious and filling. We tried this restaurant after reading great reviews. I was expecting better decoration in the dining area. How about the crocodile someone had mentioned? I eventually saw it after my husband pointed out to me the little cage above the staff area in the front. I was not impressed. We went there about 2 or 3 hours before closing that day. Many of the items such as chicken, fish, etc. were already or close to running out. How can it be? My husband ended up ordering his fourth choice! We were seated, ordered and asked for water. We finally got the food after a long, long wait. We still didn't get the water. I asked again twice and finally got the water. I was pretty much done eating by then. The dishes were also not that big. In fact, I was still kind of hungryl after the meal. I don't know why other people thought their servings were big. Perhaps I ordered the wrong item :) The items we ordered was good but not fantastic. The biscuit was good. The sourdough bread tasted just like regular slice of toast. Would I go back again? If I was really craving for breakfast food again and in the area, I would probably give this restaurant one more chance. read more

Food: average food (had breakfast). I have had much better. They did not have everything on the menu and we got there one hour after opening. Serivce:Seated us at a dirty table - that had not been cleaned yet so we stood for a few minutes while they handled that....after we waited ten minutes to be seated. Waitress was very pleasant and friendly but inefficent for how busy they where. Ambiance gets a ONE STAR, extremely loud. You had to shout to your booth companion and they had to ask "pardon me" frequently. Yet the alligator in the cage hanging from the ceiling was a nice touch. Nothing made me want to go back or turn a friend on to it after my 20 miles one way drive. read more

Sadie was super friendly as were all the employees. The decor is kooky and fun. Our omelette meals were pretty darn good. I think we'll be back but maybe a tad earlier if it's a Sunday morning cuz they get busy. Expect a wait - but not for too long. read more

We live in the area and have been waiting for this place to open for awhile. Once they opened the restaurant, the wait times were pretty bad so we waited to go. I am really glad we waited, because we only had to wait 30 mins on a Friday morning. The decorations are very fun and fit the theme. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly for the most part (the lady that seated us was younger and didn't seem super happy to be there). Our actual waitress Leinani was great and was apologetic when some of our food didn't come out. Apparently the staff got to try the food before opening so they can give recommendations even though the just opened. The pricing was great with large portions. Drinks are also well priced. Overall we had a very good time and are looking forward to going back! read more

Enigmatic mixed emotions?! I was really hoping to enjoy this new entry into Portland's brunch diner market given the accolades received from the chains' other locations. We got to Huckleberry's around 2 pm on a Tuesday and while the place was busy, we were seated in about 10 minutes and saw several empty booths. The good: we ordered 2 entrees, Louisiana catfish and The Mississippi skillet. Both were tasty and of decent portion size. At over $18 each, seemed pricey but hard to keep up with inflation prices nowadays. Having eaten at Cajun/creole places, the seasonings were very tempered most likely for suburban clientele. Pretty yummy hot sauces were on the table to spice things up. Sides of biscuit & chili were good too. Service was friendly (and apologetic?). The meh & not so good: while waitstaff were nice, it's apparent that the staff are new (e.g., items forgotten, not totally familiar with menu, etc.). We really wanted to try some of Huckleberry's signature dishes but were told that they were out of many food items (fish, crab cakes, chicken, muffins & maybe more?). We had to settle for our 4th choice from the menu. So disappointed at what we had hoped to eat but couldn't. Hopefully, supply problems like this can be corrected after a few months of operation. Would like to give 4 or 5 stars but had to knock down a couple of stars due to the issues encountered. And now also hesitant to return if the menu is simply a wish list and not a reality. Let's hope they can work out the bugs (figuratively speaking). read more

Second time having breakfast, visit time sitting in. Let me tell you! The dining in experience has is so nice, the staff are present and very friendly. So friendly in fact I was compelled to write this review while sitting in the restaurant. What I ordered today was ok but the chicken fried biscuit I had before was really good. The omelette would have been better with chicken and maybe the hollandaise over the potatoes would've been much tastier. The Cajun sauce is good too. 4/5 Tried Huckleberry for the first time and left happy... and slightly yelling at each other. The chicken fried steak was a great choice. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and definitely something we'd order again. The fried green tomatoes completely stole the show though. Whoever is in charge of those deserves a raise. Also, thank you for believing in butter. The toast was actually buttery instead of just having a butter packet sitting next to it judging you. The coffee hit the spot, but the country breakfast potatoes just weren't our favorite. They could definitely use a little more seasoning and flavor. Our only other suggestion would be to turn the music down just a tiny bit. We came for breakfast, not a game of "What did you say?" Overall, we'd absolutely come back. We had a wonderful experience! The staff was friendly, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was such a vibe. My husband is rarely impressed by new restaurants, but he couldn't stop talking about how much he enjoyed his meal. I had the Chicken & Waffles, and he ordered the Nawlings Breakfast. Both dishes were packed with flavor and generously portioned for the price. I also tried the strawberry lemonade, and it was absolutely fantastic! I've attached a few pictures. Ordered the Crab cakes Benedict with rustic potatoes, side of fried green tomatoes. The cakes, I felt were over fried, tasted more like breading. The poached eggs were on the verge of solid. And the potatoes were best with some Creole sauce which is a spicy tomato, onion, peppers sauce. The fried green tomatoes didn't disappoint. The service is nice, polite and helpful to make suggestions. The overall atmosphere is good but a little louder than I'd prefer. read more

I have been watching this renovation and waiting for them to open. It feels like it took forever. The first time I tried to go in they were on a 45 minute wait. I was only one person so I decided I would come back at a later date. Today was that day. I would recommend going earlier in the morning to beat the crowd. By about 10am the place has people out side waiting on any given day. The iced mocha has a very thick delicious whip cream on top. The food was equally as good. I had Toms scrabble with the chicken fried stake and hash browns. The biscuit was fall about flakey and good. The hash browns were cooked to perfection. It has a New Orleans style vibe. If you're in the neiborhood give them a try just be prepared to wait for a table. It does feel a bit small and there is one area of the building that is not being used at all right now. Party of 8, 1 in a wheelchair. Told it was a one hour wait, so no problem. Was assured an hour and a half in that they were waiting for diners to leave the tables. At almost 2.5 hours, we left. We were offered coupons by the hostess, who went to the manager with the issue. Nothing was offered beyond an apology. We left. They can't seem to move people out of the tables. Whereas this is a reflection on clueless diners as well, management does have the authority and ability to move loitering diners along. They did not, so we left. Warning to large parties: they do not appear to be able to accommodate you reliably. It would have been nice to try it, but I am disinclined to do so now. I guarantee getting someone in a wheelchair in and out of a vehicle is far more difficult that letting diners know that demand for tables means you have to ask them to please vacate their tables now that they've sat there for an hour. read more

Food was well prepared and very tasty. Fried green tomatoes were the best I've had in years. Had the chicken fried steak breakfast. 1/2 lb of steak with country fried potatoes and 3 eggs. More food than we could eat and topped it all off with a huckleberry muffin. Outstanding!! Be prepared for a wait for a table. We came at 11am and it took about 15-20 minutes for party of 2. We were extremely lucky that we went at just the right time and did not have to wait for seating, the staff were very polite and were on the ball, I had the breakfast burrito, it was good. The Beignets were very tasty. It's loud but it seems all restaurants are now. It's clean and nicely decorated. Now it is a brand new restaurant, it has the usual hiccups, also this is not a Cajun/ Creole restaurant in the true sense, California with a Cajun twist. I did not like the food. We ordered breakfast, it was very greasy and did not taste good at all. My stomach was upset for the rest of the day and my husband, who has a cast iron stomach, said he didn't like it either. The service, on the other hand, was EXCELLENT! I wasn't impressed by the decor, the window shades were weird and didn't roll down or up well. Not my cup of tea but when we drive by there, it is always busy. Tried going a second time because the first time we tried the line was huge. Go in the second time, before closing time They tell us they cant serve two of us because the kitchen is so behind and their running out of food. So then a table of 3 walk in and get seated right away. I asked why their getting seated and they said because they had a reservation. This place is going to run like that? I went to sharies at least once a week with my family for decades, so it was a real shift seeing the building change into something so different. I came in ready to be upset by what my childhood restaurant had become, but this place is hard to be mad at. We were sat and served by Nat, who is the most morning-person person I've ever met in my life. I hate morning people, but no one could hate Nat, she was just too happy to be there to be mad at. Check-ins were perfect, food was amazing, recommendations were spot on, drinks were filled, and overall we were taken care of in a building that had always meant so much to me. The manager came and checked in, every waiter and waitress in the place was on point, and the remodel looks beautiful. Despite trying to be mad at how my childhood restaurant had changed, it's impossible to be mad at this place. I understand it's new to the area but being charged for cold food after I politely answered honestly after the server asked how everything was seems a bit odd to me. she said I could take another order to go. why would I want to take French toast to go that was cold when it came out? First impressions are so critical. I'll address that in a moment. The staff greeted us apologetically warmly & quickly. We had over an hour's wait. Pretty typical of the opening of a new restaurant chain in this area. Once we were seated, our wait staff quickly took and served our drink order. The menu is pretty small, but had enough choices to make it difficult to choose our food. Our meals were served quickly and hot. The food was well seasoned and not overpowering. The fried green tomatoes were phenomenal, & (overpriced) could be the backbone of this restaurant. They brought back happy memories of the river bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. There are NO GREENS OR CORNBREAD on the menu. "You" can't be an authentic "Southern Restaurant" without greens & cornbread on the menu. Overall other than a few issues, I would highly recommend the restaurant. Remember I said first impressions are critical? The entrance doors and windows are filthy. The grime has to have been there since Shari's closed 3 years ago. I overheard a good portion of customers complaining about the nasty windows and the cigarette smell. The cigarette smoke from the video poker room permeates clear back to the restrooms. Hopefully this area will be the bar with airtight doors. The bathroom wasn't too bad, but seriously, clean the corners. I watched a waitstaff make a Bloody Mary on a stack of glass wash-racks. All of these bumps made me wonder how clean the kitchen is? The food presentation was good. However, who runs out of Beignets at 10:30 in the morning? A waitstaff came and asked me if I would like a bowl of fruit instead. Silly me, I assumed the fruit kick was being comp'd because the beignets were gone. Oh no, there it was on the bill. Who runs out of Crab cakes on a Sunday? My meal came with baby reds. I was expecting fried potatoes. My portion was so over cooked they actually could have easily passed for mashed. I expect all these growing pains should be resolved quickly. Visited yesterday at 2p.m. Was asked how many and I advised it was for 1. Was told there would be a 30 minute wait and I said that was fine. More and more people kept arriving and were being seated. Finally there was only myself and a family of 4 left waiting to be seated, this was after I witnessed others pulling up and parking and being seated in a short period of time. The host was getting ready to seat the family of four that had arrived at 2:40 and I asked when I would be seated. He asked for my name and I advised that he had never taken my name. He then seated me at a table before seating the family of 4.(no apology but handed me a card for a free Beignet which in small print indicated it would be free with 2 adult entrees) I gave the card to the family of 4. My waitress was great. Can't say the same about the food. I had figured you can't go wrong with a burger. I was wrong. I had ordered the Big Cheesy with seasoned fries. The fries were great, I can't say the same for the burger. Extremely bland... I added pepper and mustard. It didn't help I took half home and ended up giving it ti my next door neighbors dog. Almost $20.00 for a burger and fries..WOW I won't be back.. Received a flier today from Carl's Jr and their Double Famous Star with Cheese looks kinda like the Big Cheesy and right now they cost $5.49 read more
