The storefront is narrow and easy to miss but the great food is hard to pass up and I find myself craving the rich menu which combines a fresh farm-to-table integrity with clean, contemporary Asian flavors. Inventive cocktails, a great wine list, locally sourced ingredients and nice presentation. Can't believe this place is rated higher than Aeble on warren street. I may be picky because I eat a lot of asian food but I'm giving it a 3/5 mostly for its service. We sat at a communal table which I never like. There was not enough space to enjoy the dinner with my significant other. Then the couple next to us sat down around the same time as us so the waitress kind of took both of our drink orders at the same time. Which is fine but not if they serve us the wrong drinks. The drinks were watered down and not worth the price at all!! My boyfriends old fashioned was terrible. We got the grapefruit salad which was mediocre and def wouldn't get again. We also shared the squash app which came with burnt bread...for our mains my boyfriend got the sirloin and I got the veggie ramen. The ramen was Okay nothing special. We had our second dinner this summer at Hudson Food Studio last night, and introduced it to two friends. We all enjoyed the dinners tremendously. The BAO appetizer is always a big hit, and the Lamb wontons are a new favorite. Each of us ended up getting a different Spicing Rice noodles with carrots, some with shrimp, and some with chicken. Great service, and great cocktails! The cocktail special made with Empress Gin, lemon juice, basil and mint simple syrup and seltzer made the evening complete! And the patio garden is a beautiful environment to pass the evening within. Our server, Vanessa, was especially attentive. What a treat! read more

I had the pressed tofu appetizer, which came with a salad of leaves that tasted a lot like shiso/perilla, although I've only ever had that as a garnish so I'm not entirely sure. Interesting flavors. For the main I had mushrooms and greens over rice, also nice, not knock-your-socks-off, but good. My non-vegetarian partner had pork belly on buns appetizer (looked good, I admit), and then spicy chicken, both of which he said were quite tasty. I got the impression that the meat dishes are better than the veggie dishes, which doesn't really have to be the case in an Asian-inspired restaurant. This place has been lazily coasting along for years. The menu rarely changes and it's gotten boring. Most of the appetizers and drinks had been consistently good, the garden is lovely and the staff used to be so, too. Things seem to have changed radically recently. I ordered a crispy tofu and mushroom noodle dish which I have had on many an occasion and last night was served a pile of slop which was terrible: mushy noodles with uncooked crumbled tofu. I had to hunt down waiters to find three of them chatting behind their station to ask for chili oil to make it a bit more palatable and told them about the lack of CRISPY tofu on the plate but my feeling from their reaction was that they couldn't be bothered. I get that good service is hard to find now but sheesh. The sure didn't mind the automatic 20% tip they received from our large party. You have much better choices in Hudson now and I urge you to use them. I won't be back. read more

Came here on a busy Friday night. The service was fine enough but nothing to write home about. I recommend the banh mi toast and the chicken pho, which were real deal. I don't suggest the jumping squid. While the clever name sounds enticing, the dish lacked flavor and felt like something I would've thrown together after a long day and couldn't care less about what was for dinner. The "greens & rice" entree tasted better, but the preparation and presentation felt the same way. Not sure I would be in any hurry to go back anytime soon, but I will say the portion sizes are pretty good, so the food is fairly satisfying in that regard. Typically I love this restaurant, I go every couple months. But something is always off. I get the pork buns every time. Sometimes they're skinny. Today they were delicious. Also had the slaw, which had changed recently and was riddled with burnt almonds. When we first sat down our table was set but sticky and it took awhile to get water. We don't usually go out for Valentine's Day, but my husband made the reservation to try this. What a treat! The food was delicious. I had the special, the Chocolate Martini (I'm a chocaholic) which was wonderful. Hubby had the Yo Yo Ma Old Fashioned, also delicious. App was the Baby back ribs with coleslaw - a great portion for a starter! Main meal was the special Lamb with noodles, and his was a Big Bowl of Noodles. We almost couldn't finish as the portions were so good. Wonderfully tasty fare. The service was excellent also. We took a short walk in the back and saw the larger dining room and the outside portion which will be open in the spring. Definitely a welcome addition to Hudson. Food studio is a reasonably priced small restaurant. It definitely is Asian-inspired and not authentic, but they come very close. The range of prices is what sets it apart in over-priced, fine-dining Hudson. It's really the only mid-range thing on offer. The service is always good. No reservations so on a busy weekend can be a struggle but go early and it'll be fine. Drinks are done quite well actually and beer selection is great. The appetizers range from meal-size to bite-size so inquire before you order. The buns are good. Salad great. Crab cakes yum. Brussels are awesome and big. Squid is great and again huge. Mains range from $15-25 or so. The Pho is fantastic when on offer (ask for hot sauce and use ALL the condiments. Broth is thin but works fine. Noodles are fine). The ramen, well if you've had good ramen this will pale in comparison. But since the closest good ramen is 2 hours away, it's fine (again needs umami in the broth and a better bite to the noodles). Pork and rice is good but you could easily duplicate that at home. It's huge though so easily two meals and great for a budget conscious person. Other vegetarian mains tend to be quite good. I don't order the pricey mains as they're similar in price and presentation to other places so not worth it. I am a regular here and love it. read more

My wife and I were in Hudson for our anniversary weekend and were excited to try this place. We went one evening and really enjoyed it. The drinks were very good, the food was tasty, and the ambience was great. Overall, I'd probably give it 4 stars based on those things. We enjoyed it so much that we actually went back the next night. But we had a pretty negative experience that second night that left us with an awful impression: First, we sat down and ordered drinks. A few minutes later, three people were seated at the table next to us. It became clear very quickly that these people were well-connected at the restaurant, as multiple employees came over to greet them. Soon, we ordered our meal, including one particular dish that we were excited to try. Maybe ten minutes later, the other table ordered their meal. One of the guests, after listing many options on the menu, elected to order the same dish we had ordered (I know this because she was speaking so loudly that we heard everything that was said at their table). A few minutes later, the manager came over to our table and told us that she was very sorry but that the kitchen had just run out of the dish we had ordered. We were disappointed, but said "No problem, it happens" and went on enjoying our drinks. We were quite disappointed, however, when a few minutes later a waiter brought that dish to the table next to us. It didn't matter that these guests ordered after we did - they clearly knew people at the restaurant, and were treated better than we were. My wife and I elected not to say anything at the time, and instead tried to enjoy our anniversary celebration. On the way out, I approached the manager and said that I couldn't help but notice we ordered first and were told they were out of a dish, but that the table next to us was then given that dish. I am not one to complain to restaurant managers, and I worried that she would not even know what I was talking about. But she did, immediately. The manager informed me that the owner of the building was seated at that table. She also informed me that their party had called ahead earlier and reserved that dish (which was not true, as we heard the person who ordered the dish listing all of the other options before settling on it). It was clear that the staff wanted to impress the owner and his guests and gave them preferential treatment over other customers (I'm frankly amazed that the manager was so transparent about this). Needless to say, I do not care in the slightest about eating one particular dish (it was the dancing squid, by the way, and according to that table, it was delicious). But it was insulting that the restaurant so blatantly treated its paying customers like second-class guests so it could impress the building's owner. I completely understand why the staff did what they did (we don't own the building, after all), but we were left feeling like we just gave two nights of business to a restaurant only to be insulted. It is a feeling I do not remember having at any restaurant I have ever been to, and instead of having a nice anniversary celebration, we had one of the worst customer service experiences either of us has encountered. read more

Visiting Hudson and decided to eat here, this place was recommended by a local shop owner to us as a dog friendly place. They had outdoor seating so it worked out well. The outdoor tables and chairs could use an improvement but other than that the food was delicious. The waiter was friendly. Definitely recommend!! read more

We waited about 20-25 mins for a table for 2, the restaurant is quite small but the hostess was very attentive in telling us how much longer we should expect to wait. It was well worth the wait. We had delicious fresh handmade cocktails. I ordered the Vietnamese salad and the Japanese eggplant. Both were extraordinary. Our waitress and was lovely and the service was fast. No wonder the restaurant is so popular, I can't wait to go back and try the other items on the menu. read more

Asian fusion at it's best! Groovy tattooed waitstaff and the ambiance of a cool small brownstone Brooklyn restaurant. Here we can always be sure to meet new people or run into our friends. We love this place, super yum....and fortunately we live across the street so we can get takeout too. The crab cakes are the BEST, the ribs are amazing and different in a great way. The oysters are fantastic, when they are on the menu. And we love all the scrumptious noodle dishes.... Salivating just thinking about it. Very talented chef here! The produce is local and always fresh, fresh, fresh.....and we leave with a feeling of having eaten a super tasty, flavourful and healthy meal. The place can be a bit cool in the winter and a little hot in the summer and the chairs at the long table might be a bit more comfortable.....BUT all forgiven - TOTALLY worth it. read more

I attempted two times recently to either pick up food from a very nasty front door person manager I was quickly shoved away to wait for my order . Forget a smile or any amount of courtesy. You would imagine in this lovely little town with a cool vibe, restaurants with the ability to serve with a certain amount of professionalism and manners , forget about an expectation of a nice evening and excepting the food never come out the same as the last time .Being scolded for asking mere questions or asking for a table was such a bad experience I will never go back ! I have eaten here over the years and forgave the bad service to have a few cocktails with some small snacks , dumplings are amazing but unfortunately being treated so badly ruined my evenings out . This was a hard one to rate. A few of the items on the menu are quite tasty. The appetizer ribs are a standout: succulent and tender with a heaping mound of very flavorful chopped cabbage (with a nice crunch of toasted almond slivers) as a perfect complement. The crab cakes are so-so despite the aesthetic presentation. The main courses, however, were a huge disappointment. The "HSF noodles," is its take on pad thai - but is bland and unseasoned. I had to ask for lime slices and salt and pepper - and nothing could fix it. The supposedly house-made ramen was inedible. Again, the presentation was nice, but I was shocked at how bad and completely devoid of flavor it was. The broth was like dark brackish dishwater. I was reminded of the judges on shows like Top Chef who ask, "Did anyone TASTE this before it went out?!" It took me forever to get the server's attention to ask for salt and pepper. Nothing, though, could make this dish palatable. The service is inconsistent but generally neglectful. The server we had on our last visit was the worst: she dropped a steak knife on my husband's lap and seemed to think it was funny rather than something she should apologize for. She took our orders and disappeared. Didn't check on us or refill water, mixed up our main course orders and was just generally apathetic. So, have waited years to try this highly regarded asian (Vietnamese? Chinese? Fusion?) restaurant as I have a home in the neighborhood of Hudson. Would have put up with the higher priced menu, but was really disappointed in two things: spicy chicken and rice noodles was almost inedible as the amount of salt was overwhelming in an otherwise tasty dish. I feel certain i am correct in this assessment as I am the one at the table who is usually grabbing the salt shaker to add salt to almost everything. People generally worry about my love of salt. My husband, not a big salter of food agreed. We eat loads of asian food in NYC and I am sure I have never encountered this particular shortcoming. The panfried trout was quite good (not oversalted) but the accompanying greens which were a wonderful mix of mint, cilantro and mesclun would have been great but instead they were INSANELY salty. I have now encountered this problem for the second time - most recently at a new york high end pizzeria where I mentioned it to the owner who then tasted the salad (again the salad), and agreed it was almost inedible. Here the waitress was barely sympathetic and I think she thought I was a bit cranky. Maybe i was the only one to complain or maybe I was the only patron to receive this oversalted menu, but for sure I would not return when there was no response from the wait staff/cooks.
