So I wanted to get a burger while in the downtown area yesterday. I really love Kooky Canuck burgers but I had not visited Huey's for a while so I decided to visit it . BIG MISTAKE!! Found this place off a quick search, so decided to pop in since we read some good things. The place has some age to it and it's not going to be eye appealing, so prepare yourself. But, I've had some of the best food in Divvy bars like this one. Unfortunately, this time wasn't it. We ordered the French dip and the South Philly Cheesesteak with a side of taters and onion rings. My French dip was so bland. I found myself throwing some salt on the sandwich to bring it back to life. It wasn't horrible but I couldn't believe the lack of seasoning. The dip was the same thing. The taters were perfectly crisp and delicious. The sandwich bread was soft. I tried the cheesesteak as well, same thing. The onion rings were not appetizing. The breading crumbled off, leaving you with a big piece of red onion which is something I'm not used to. Normally, it's a sweet yellow/white onion. The red onion wasn't a winner here. I see a ton of reviews about people raving about the sandwiches. I was the unlucky one on this visit. Our first server was miserable, she had no personality. Felt like she hated being at work. Our second server took over and she was happy to be there. They also allow folks from the street to stroll through the dinning area. At one point, the individual was going through an emotional phase as he was trying to pick at left overs from the table. Made us flinch for a second because of his unstable reaction and speaking out loud towards the patrons. This is the nicest way I can put it. I will NEVER EVER eat here again. I ate dinner by myself. Food was great but my experience was shit. After I was finished with my meal, I waited an extremely long time for the check. I had to ask another waiter to pull up my check and paid. As I was leaving and walking back to my hotel, I was rudely yelled at by the security. Telling me I forgot something and didn't pay causing a scene. Forced me to go back and embarrass myself in front of the entire restaurant. Everyone was looking at me and I felt so awkward. Since when because that same daughter and her boyfriend were there 2 weeks prior around the same time and they didn't have any issues, and they're 19. Okay I've been to Huey's downtown a few times since this review. And I'm here to say I still will not agree about the world famous burger BUT they have world famous flavored catfish and really tasty wings. AND the service is definitely world famous. I went in for lunch with my daughter today and Megan was my server. She was so kind to the both of us, very friendly and she didn't miss anything. She got really busy and still gave us great service. I really love going into Huey's now and it's definitely worth the trip. One star down cause the portions on the catfish are a bit small but the flavor is so good I'll probably keep getting them! Huey's Downtown is another famous burger restaurant in Memphis. The Huey's seasoning on their six ounce angus beef patties is their claim to fame. The location is in walking distance of several parking lots/decks as well as being surrounded by ample street parking. The atmosphere and decor are really unique here with what feels like little bits of Huey's history embedded in several nooks and crannies around the restaurant. The service was a little spotty but nothing egregious. I ordered the Huey's burger cooked to medium well. While I did omit many of the toppings that would have made it more of a fully fledged burger, I was really hoping to taste the signature seasoning in addition to the meat, cheese, and bread. Came in and wanted a Burger. I heard that it was a good place to go to for not super expensive food. So we have to try it. The burger was pretty solid. TL;DR If this is Memphis' best burger, save a lot of money and go to Wendy's. Seriously,the owner needs to visit Bru Burger in Indianapolis and take notes. We all ordered burgers medium and two of the three came out that way. Mine was a dry, well done. My red onion rings came out hot but my wife's sweet potato fries and son's steak fries were ice cold. Seriously, do they not have a working heat lamp at least? Great for beer bad for fried food. We sent them back for hot ones. Our waitress could not have lacked more energy, personality and enthusiasm. It seemed as though we just woke her up. With all of the mumbling she did, we couldn't understand her and just anticipated what she said. The third largest industry in Memphis is tourism. We visited Memphis over Thanksgiving, and Huey's was the first place we went to for a late night dinner on our first night. It's a pretty typical bar, lots of seating and bar space. The menu is mostly burgers, sandwiches, tots, and the likes. Adam was our waiter and he was outstanding! So helpful with the menu, great recommendations, and a very welcoming and friendly personality. This was our first real dive into Memphis and Adam helped us feel welcome and ready to explore the city. We got the Philly cheesesteak, and a side of tots, and we really enjoyed it! The sandwich had a great flavor and great ratio of bread to contents. The tots were really tasty (hard to go wrong there) and the seasoning they used was delicious. Adam helped us choose dessert and we went with the lemon box pie. I was a little taken back when I saw cinnamon sprinkled on top. I have never seen cinnamon paired with lemon before. Let me tell you, great combo! The pie was so light and tasty, very refreshing. Overall, our experience at Huey's was great. Would highly recommend stopping in for a tasty, moderately priced meal. Great hire and excellent employee. #2 the atmosphere was so relaxing but welcoming, so welcoming that my buddy and I went back the 2nd night we were in Memphis. Not only did we go back many of the conference attendees went back the 2nd night too. #3 Their double fried wings are amazing! I always love eating at Huey's Midtown. It is our go to place for any and every occasion . or just when I want a vegan burger. I went again with my sister friend and daughter have a girls day out. I had a beyond burger with all the fixings and grilled mushroomsand grilleed onions. It was really good until i got to the middle it reminded me too much of the real thing and fleshy looking so i only ate half. The manager told me to ask them to smash it in order to cook it a little inside. All in all I highly recommend not only for the food but for the excellent service.
