Let me start by saying WOW! This place is very small and quiet. I was scheduled for my wisdom teeth removal. I am a highly anxious person. And my nerves were out the window and down the street the morning of my surgery. Dr Hughes's team was stellar EVERY last employee was smiling and kind and telling me that everything would be fine. I had a pre-op meeting with Dr. Hughes and my husband so I would have post-op info before sedation. The Dr cleared up a lot of facts about recovery. He was absolutely genuine and caring. He eased my nerves by simply being kind. When I was moved to operation room he had 2 other staff in there and they were so gentle so sweet. I went night night and came too as they were wheeling me to the car. I can't sing their praises enough. I will always recommend Dr. Hughes. Him and his team went above and beyond. Edit: 1 week post-op and I'm feeling great! This oral surgeon is magnificent! I highly highly highly recommend him if your insurance covers his work! His work is so unbelievably precise and careful. Gene Hughes is a fantastic and caring surgeon. He treats even the most serious operations like I had done when there were complications from pulling my wisdom teeth. And he's always respectful, explains everything well enough that you know the risks. And he makes the whole operation as comfortable as he realistically can in such a stressful situation. Update: As it turns out they lied to me for two days and as it turns out they don't do prior authorizations. I had no idea about this policy. No clue what so ever. I should've been informed after I had requested a prior authorization on the 12th. They should have been upfront about their policies and I would've just had to pay out of pocket. Rather then stressing myself the hell out and figuring out the issue. They treated me like a drug addict and lied to me this entire time. If they told me two days ago, maybe my primary doctor could've written a new prescription for narco and I wouldn't have had to pay out of pocket. Unfortunately the issue here is with the staff. I asked for a prior authorization on the 12th for my norco. I said the ibuprofen isn't working. I had six teeth ripped out of my mouth and I popped open my socket by mistake once. It's safe to say I'm in a lot of pain. Gene Huges himself our last appointment said I'd need an extra week of pain meds after I brushed too hard and popped open my socket. Instead of giving a prior auth, they wanted to prescribe me some Tylenol. I proceeded to tell my pharmacist at Dimas that the only thing that helped me was the norco and the ibuprofen was doing nothing. (Wonderful pharmacy but let's save that for another review) So she politely asked them to prior auth it. They told my pharmacy they did. Fast forward 2 days I still haven't gotten my meds. I log into my account on CVS caremark and I notice something strange, there's no prior auth. I figure the cvs caremark site is a bit buggy at times so I called my insurance right away and found out that they just never bothered to authorize my needed medication. I was told that now the only way I can avoid paying out of pocket is to request my dentist to give a verbal authorization directly to CVS caremark so they can approve it right away. They've since said "they're working on it." Like before and I know by this point that's a damn lie. They've just constantly treated me like a drug addict when I just had major dental surgery. Needless to say if your looking for a simple operation that doesn't require heavy duty pain killers, this is the office for you. If god forbid you need a major operation that might be painful and require prescription drugs, you should look elsewhere. I have been nothing more then polite throughout this entire thing and very patient. Despite that they treated me with constant disrespect and I don't feel welcome to ever come back to this surgeon again. Believe me I'm in a lot of pain and emotionally not in the right state of mind I could've went full cranky old lady mode but I chose to be patient and kind and understanding. This place is horrible they saw my daughter before she got pregnant with my grandson who is know a year old and they pulled 2 of her wisdom teeth but she couldn't go back for the other 2 due to her pregnancy so I called them on 9-15-22 and I'm in Michigan where I moved to and the receptionist called my daughter to find out her height and weight and when my daughter told her how much her weight was she told my daughter that het BMI was to high and they couldn't treat her. WTH does your BMI have to do with pulling 2 teeth seriously! Totally BS in my eyes!!!! My daughter isn't fat and she had a baby a year some don't lose the baby weight that fast. read more

I was in dire need of removing all four of my wisdom teeth (top and bottom). We searched and searched and Dr. Hughes' office was able to take me in right away and for a great price because I do not have dental insurance. As soon as we walked in, the sweet lady at front desk was very kind and explained to me all the paperwork I needed to fill out before I could begin my oral surgery. Shortly after I was done filling out the papers I was called to the back to begin the surgery. In the surgery room there was: Dr. Hughes, the anesthesiologist, and a dental assistant. They were all very sweet and clearly instructed me what to do as they began prepping for the surgery. The surgery took less than half and hour to finish, I felt no pain whatsoever and Dr. Hughes provided me with a baggy full of ice packs to keep in my jaw wraps, my lucky teeth, gauzes and tea bags in case I bled more than normal. Luckily, the bleeding stopped about 3 hours after the surgery, had some swelling which is perfectly normal, and experienced no pain whatsoever! Dr. Hughes called to check up on me the evening of my surgery and assured me I was able to eat soft foods and needed to take my meds so that I do not get an infection and have no pain. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Hughes and his office! They're professionals that know what they're doing, genuinely care about their patients and helped me feel better! Dr. Hughes is a great dental surgeon. I've gone to him on different occasions to have work done. I've always referred people and telling people what outstanding bedside manners Dr. Hughes has. I've always had exceptional service/experience. The last experience I had was a little different when on March 2023, I woke up from anesthesia Dr. Hughes let me know when he extracted the tooth, the tooth in front of it the crown broke. Dr. Hughes offered to make wrong right, he issued a check to cover half of the cost to replace the crown. For some reasons I misplaced the check and a year later it turns up. I'm happy to find it. I called the bank to deposit it and the bank said it's too old that the office would need to reissue another check. So I took the check to Dr. Hughes office to have the date updated. This took place on February 22, 2024. I feel like I'm making a bigger deal than what it needs to be, trying to being patient. I don't understand why in gods name it would be difficult to reissue a new check and length of time. Seriously I wonder if Dr. Hughes know if the girls are running his office in this manner, who knows. I surely wouldn't want my reputation/integrity ruined because of some half wit that can't even do their job. What an embarrassment. Sylvia is the one in charge of issuing checks. March 18,2024 I spoke with Julia or Julie. I've called every week on Tuesday and Thursday because that's when Sylvia is in to do payroll. Today is Friday March 29, 2024 i called today to find out if Sylvia had issued me the check. Same response call back next week on Tuesday. I don't know what to do I'm at my wits end. Not good! 100 degrees in Bakersfield and my wife, (senior citizen) and I, had to wait outside to fill out paperwork. When we did get inside the cramped waiting room the decor was just plain CREEPY. Looked as if they got their furniture from a Funeral home surplus. although the lawn flamingoes were a nice touch. Then as we waited they pumped in some sort of flute music. over and over again. I don't know if that was part of the funeral home motif but felt like I should be pulling an ox cart in a third world country. apparently the music didn't bring down the morale of the staff because they were giggling and laughing the entire time we were there. Guess they don't lock up the nitrous oxide. Canceling my surgery. Don't want these people putting me to sleep. read more

Dr. Hughes makes sure you are comfortable before and after the procedure. I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted this morning at 8am. He made sure I had medicine to reduce swelling, pain medication, and cold packs. It's now 7pm and I am still feeling like myself. Horrible absolutely the worst. Find someone who actually showes up for their consultations. The reviews looked so good. I called around town for 3 days trying to find an oral surgeon for my broken wisdom tooth. The issue was insurance. When I finally got a referral from my regular dentist they couldn't schedule my appointment for 6 WEEKS. The pain had subsided to a point I was alright to, I waited. The day before my appointment they called to confirm with me and I was excited to eat and not be in pain. Unfortunately after I wake up at 5am for my 6am appointment the receptionist calls and tells me that the DR is sick and can not come in. She apologized and rescheduled for a week later. Now I understand being sick and all.. But as they do the exact same thing the following week when I have waited 2 months now and have to now go back to find SOMEONE WHO CAN ACTUALLY HELP ME. I'll start with how I was greeted at the door. The dental assistant had a horrible attitude and was honestly not welcoming. I gave them my paperwork they had my ID and health insurance card for about 15 mins and they had not finished scanning them when I asked for my stuff back. After being in the back room for less than 5 mins I was escorted out and was told they wouldn't help me. I look young for my age and had my mother come with me to help me. Just had my wisdom teeth taken out at 10am this morning, it is now almost 3:30pm and I'm in minimal pain with the medicine Dr Hughes prescribed me and just a little numb still which he did say would happen, and feeling like myself again! Went in so nervous and crying hysterically! (Literally felt like I was going to have an anxiety attack and/or heart attack right there in the office). The Dr and an assistant calmed me down and tried to make me feel comfortable and he even was trying to tell me a few jokes before I went it. I went in and laid in the chair, the assistant was very polite, they put the IV in and I felt NOTHING. The nurse then put something in my mouth to help keep it open during surgery and I don't remember ANYTHING after that. According to my boyfriend, I woke up with the biggest smile on my face and said "I feel awesome; like I just went to a giant rager" LOL He's an awesome dentist! And I definitely recommend him for wisdom teeth extractions. He let me keep my wisdom teeth and i was in & out of there in no time!! SUCH A PIECE OF CAKE. I will NEVER again go here. I took my son to have his wisdom teeth removed. And the first visit was fine, the they pushed his appointment up to an earlier date but at 1:15pm. I picked him up from school and they arrived at 1pm. And we sat and waited to be called. My son had not eaten since the night before at their request. 2:40pm rolled around and we were still sitting in the waiting room waiting for the doctor. Patient came in and left out and we were still waiting. I asked how much longer and they said "when the doctor is finished with his patients he will be ready. They told me they had to actually cancel my appointment because they were waiting for insurance... WHY DID I NOT RECEIVE A PHONE CALL BEFORE THIS. I then asked that same question to the receptionist and she was so rude and careless. I talked to my insurance and they said they were waiting on the dentist office and if they didn't hear from the dentist office they were going to cancel on June 3rd .. a month later I FINALLY heard from them telling me about the next steps and how my insurance denied the procedure. He was great. I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled all at once. I was told about Dr. Hughes by my dad. Dr. Hughes is highly recommended. Dr. Hughes is nice and very friendly. I was nervous going under anesthesia. Everything went well though. I had very minimal pain. I even went home after surgery and ate cookies. It's been years and I've had no problems or pain. I wish I would have known about Dr. Hughes a long time ago. Got an appointment next day first thing in the morning and was out in just over an hour. Filled out some paperwork and did the x Ray right away and in less than 2 min he was showing me what the game plan was and told me what to expect post op. Woke up didn't feel a thing but still gave me directions. The whole staff was amazing and super friendly and made the whole experience from walking in to going home and then one step further, I was asleep but he called to check on me but left a voicemail seeing how i was doing and to make sure I eat soft foods take my pills and more. I got my wisdom teeth removed and not even 48 hours later I got a horrible infection in my face and had to be intubated aka life support for 3 days, not only did they not follow up with me I had to go to them 2 different times to try and be seen but of course the dr called out sick or he wasn't there and when I needed paperwork filled out for my job the receptionist refused to fill it out cuz only the dr can but was out sick at the time and they seem to not care at all I was hospitalized for 5 days, and also I told them I'm allergic to a certain antibiotic the nurse says she's giving me something not similar but similar to the medicine I'm allergic too, I did NOT take well to the medication they gave me which led up to me being hospitalized, I hope this review helps someone so they don't end up like me, all the reviews I've read were about him calling out sick on everyone so it's his thing to do! read more

Thank you thank you thank you Dr Hughes! From the walk-in to the surgery, Dr Hughes and his staff were so respectful and kind to me and my husband. The waiting area was full of calming aromatherapy essential to being in a comfortable state. Then when it came to my 4 extractions, the 2 assistants told me step by step what the we're doing and asked me if I had any concerns. Of course I had to verify for myself if they spray cold spray before needles and immediately said yes that's the only way dr does it. My nervousness was completely away when dr Hughes entered the room prepared and his fatherly personality comforted me in a trusting way. I knew he would take care of me. After everything was done, he informed my husband that he also gave me a dose of anti inflammatory meds within the surgery that reduces swelling dramatically. Today I woke up after my surgery am a chipmunk. I immediately called my friends and family and had to tell them about the Amazing office of Dr Hughes and himself of course. After the lidocaine wore off I have been in the worst pain of my life. It felt like he cut up my throat and esophaguses. Not even close to sure why my throat and esophaguses is in so much pain. I can't swallow,I can't eat. I tried to call the office to talk to them about the pain I was in and the antibiotics they gave me, I told the woman on the phone that I wasn't able to take them and it was so hard to eat or drink. I was treated terrible. She was quick to hang up on me. They don't like phone calls. It honestly felt like something sharp was lodged in my esophaguses and slid down. I went to the urgent care and er. They wouldn't scope my throat but gave me meds with lidocaine in it to drink. My chest feels like its on fire. My entire digestive track is messed up. I have had 3 wisdom teeth pulled out. No problems at all. It hurts to breath,swallow,I can't eat or drink anything. I am in terrible pain all the time. I was scheduled last week to have 3 teeth extracted from Doctor Hughes, I canceled and rescheduled because I was so scared, scared is in understatement more like petrified! But I pushed through today and attended my second appointment and so happy I did! The staff there is remarkable, easy going and completely made me feel comfortable! I was there less then a hour and was under anesthetic less then 20 minutes! Amazing! So professional! I was released with 2 pain medication and antibiotics and instructions on how to care for my surgery! I really appreciated all the reviews here, they help me more then you'll ever know!
