This place is a fixture in Wheaton and yet it took me 30 years to come here! I still don't know what made me want to go blonde (though I feel like everyone imagines it at one point) but: 1) turning 30, 2) COVID crisis, and 3) having to postpone my wedding 3 times due to said COVID crisis were reasons enough. I made an appointment in September 2020 with Amanda (just looked on the website for a stylist) and prepared to go blonde. She had looked over the photos I sent and we spoke and came to a better idea of what I wanted/could achieve. I had about 3 years' worth of box dye on my head (2 inches of roots) and my natural color is a Level 2, the box dye put me at maybe Level 3 or 4. The process was long but that was to be expected and Amanda very thorough - hair is her passion and it shows! We got halfway to where I wanted to be in that session and she recommended me some products (that I bought and then later purchased again on my own - Kerastase, why does everything you make have to smell SO good?!?!) I've since gone twice more to get to the level of blonde I want (the lightest parts are basically Level 9 now!) I know there are bound to be people who complain about something, anything about the process but I don't have a single complaint. It's a given that such a huge transformation will take a long time and while my little tailbone is dead at the end, these stylists have had their arms up, standing and working for ~6 hours so us clients can have gorgeous hair! Amanda is super professional and personable - I can trust her with my hair and she's always willing to make things right (the first time the toner was too light it washed out almost immediately and she saw me the day after to get it a bit darker so it would fade better, at no charge). I have been going to Jeanette for years - she even did my hair for my wedding. Jeanette is always professional, takes pride in her work, attentive and overall great. Due to COVID concerns, I really avoided a haircut and my hair was SO long. I went in today and within 40 minutes my hair went from lackluster to looking healthy. I highly recommend Jeanette. The store is also taking COVID precautions with temperature checks and a questionare that even requires that customer notify the salon if they later find out they had COVID. The salon was well spaced out and everyone had a mask - I saw several N95. Oh and the scalp massage that was part of the shampooing was amazing. Highly recommend. read more

I decided to check out this salon for a Kerastase treatment. I was greeted by Amanda who was nice, personable, and explained the process- I let her know I just wanted to receive a treatment for healthier and stronger hair after years of dying it. She recommended two products and then proceeded with a shampoo and scalp massage, which was lovely! The Kerastase treatment itself was about 15-20 minutes, and the initial shampoo and blow dry was another 10-15 minutes. The day after treatment, my hair felt slightly softer, but now that it's been a week later, my hair feels like it originally did. read more

Not only did she disappear half the time, she let a teenager do the color. Jeanette only did the highlights which were uneven. This happened two weeks before my wedding. I went someplace else to get it fixed. Instead of gossiping with everyone at the salon, she should have made time to talk to me and understand what I wanted. CHEMICAL BURNS! Do NOT go here! This isn't the old Hugo Salon I knew and loved. My understanding is that they have new management and a new team. I went in to have my hair bleached, colored, and cut - the new Hugo Salon failed on all three! My appointment started an hour late and it was with a stylist who had never done my hair before. When she bleached my hair, she gave me chemical burns on my scalp. They were oozing and bleeding! She also over-processed some sections, while leaving others orange, which isn't at all the color I wanted. In addition, even though I requested layers and I was left with a choppy, uneven mess. It was so bad, I had to book a consultation with another salon the following morning. When I went in for the consultation, the stylist there was shocked. She said it was very unusual for a professional stylist to chemically burn a client. She was so worried about the wounds and scared for me, that she told me to visit a doctor the very next day. I ended up going to the doctor three times, including a dermatologist, and was given two prescriptions to prevent infection and treat a rash caused by the bleach. This was a month ago. I've received no resolution from Hugo Salon even though I requested a refund and for them to cover my medical treatment and expenses for the chemical burns less than three days after the first appointment. Furthermore, they haven't been doing a good job monitoring their customer service inbox and I have had to correspond with them via text. I've even provided a photo of the burn and receipts of my medical costs. This is completely unacceptable. A professional team of stylists should not leave a client with orange hair, a bad haircut, or chemical burns. Do not go here! read more

One word: AWFUL. This place does NOT live up to the hype. Sure, it looks stylish and sexy...but they do say that looks can be deceiving. That saying was probably created for this place. I expected my hair to look beautifully polished and glamorous with voluminous loose waves and clip-in extensions. What I got was too much product that made it fall flat and the roots greasy. Oh, but let's not forget that the extensions were curled, so my hair looked like a disheveled cocker spaniel. I also have very fine hair, and instructed the stylist to avoid putting conditioner on the roots. She didn't listen, and responded with a VERY condescending "Well, our conditioner is gel and really light, so it should be fine". WELL, clearly, it wasn't fine. She also said that my hair wouldn't take very long and it ended up taking twice as much time. If there were a way to rate this place zero stars, I would. The only reason a fit wasn't thrown then and there was because my friend had her wedding to get to. I will NEVER come back to this salon. read more

Having grown my bangs out for the past few years, I was hit with a sudden urge to cut them recently. Rather than attempt to practice my (lack of) barber skills on myself as I have done so in the past with bangs (which quickly spiral into immediate regret), I decided to do some research to opt for a more professional cut. What I love about Hugo Salon is that they post pictures of their cuts on instagram, making it very easy to decide whether you like their style of cuts or not. They also have Stylist Lookbooks on their website for you to check out cuts done by specific stylists. So many other salons have online photo galleries filled with pictures of their... salon. That's great - your seats look so comfy and your wallpaper is spot on. But I'm not here to seek interior design services. I booked with Athanasia (check out her lookbook!) and she gave me a gorgeous cut with exactly the long swishy side bangs I asked for. To further highlight how much of a rockstar this woman was, she was expertly juggling three clients simultaneously and still managed to deliver. The blowout also looked amazing, although I can't guarantee it's something I can recreate myself at home. Fun perk: They have a waiting room equipped with several iPads and magazines to distract yourself, as well as drinks and occasionally food. I scored some pre-haircut donuts. read more

It took a long time for me to decide that I wanted to get my hair colored after 3 years of letting it grow out and even longer to decide where I wanted to go. Luckily, I found Hugo Salon through a hashtag on Instagram. I booked an appointment with Jeanette, the level 4 stylist, about 2 weeks out - which I thought was relatively quick given the backlog of appointments since COVID hit. When making my appointment, I had to pay $100 for a down payment since my service was going to be more expensive. Which leads to my next point, yes it's expensive but it's my hair and it's important to me that it looks good, especially if it's being colored. And the stylists deserve to be paid what their experience is worth. I was quoted $346 for balayage and a women's haircut. Keep in mind that's with a level 4 stylist. This changes depending on who you choose. Hugo is doing the best they can with social distancing and other CDC guidelines such as masks and gloves. You must wear your mask at all times. I would recommend taking a look at their website to see who the stylists are and if they fit your needs. The front desk was super nice too! I started going here more than 10 years ago. I live close and want this place to be a) more affordable and b) more personable than it is. The prices have gotten simply out of control. You can't get a simple hair cut for under $69. Want hair color? Assume not under $200... without tip. For that kind of money (which I'm actually willing to pay if the place is right), I should have a stylist attentive to me, not running around and leaving me stranded (thus making my appointment unnecessarily longer). I should also expect a calm, spa-like experience (or at least intentionally hip and loud). I should also expect that hygiene is of top importance. The thing is - I am not sure I get much of any of that. Instead I saw my stylist working on 4 people at once and seeming frenzied. I saw brushes and combs drop to the floor and not get cleaned before going into someone's hair again. I saw stylists cough in their hands and then brush hair. (It's flu season ya'll). And it just wasn't the calm (or intentionally hip) place I hope for when I got get a head massage and cut (or color). In short this place used to be so much better - and affordable. It will be my last resort place and I'll keep looking for a good one. read more

I would not recommend going to Ivonette, her name way similar to that. She started on my hair 45 minutes late. As well as giving her opinion on the photo of the hair cut I wanted. I constantly kept re-telling her what I wanted. I wanted a wolf-cut (very layered, and short in the front). She didn't do the layers how I showed her in multiple pictures, cut my hair too short, didn't cut the hair on the side of my face just like how I asked her, and styled it randomly. I wanted to love Hugo so bad -- the salon is very close to my home, and it was also recommended by a neighbor of mine. My first haircut at Hugo just didn't work. I gave Hugo the benefit of the doubt and asked for a different stylist to "adjust" the cut a week later, and I was kind of happy. This stylist was no longer working at Hugo when it was time for my next trim I booked an appointment with another stylist for a cut and highlights. Highlights seemed pricy but I had never had them done before. I was still trying to grow out the choppy layers from the first cut I got at Hugo, so I didn't expect (and didn't get) miracles with the haircut. I went a few more times, thinking it was me or my hair or something (?), I had resigned myself to the fact that I wasn't going to get a great cut ever again. I had to get another "adjustment" too. It seemed like I was dropping $250 each time I went in for a cut and highlights/color plus tip. See? I really, really tried. I really wanted to love Hugo. My last appointment was around the holidays and the stylists were understandably busy...but once again the cut was not what I wanted (nor what I had gotten from the same stylist I'd been going to for fifteen years prior to moving). An assistant did most of the highlights this time (stylist was jumping between me and at least one other customer). The highlights were much lighter than before and my hair was fried. That was the last time I went to Hugo. All in all, I spent well over $1000 at Hugo over the course of almost two years...and never left the salon loving the way my hair looked. I've been a client at Hugo since this summer, Taylor has been my stylist both times, and I couldn't be more satisfied. I'm super low maintenance, but wanted to try to do something fun with my color, and Taylor took my wants and lifestyle into consideration. We did fun vibrant colors, and also kept some of my natural color to make it easy to hide in more professional situations. She kept in mind that I don't have a lot of time to style my hair, and made my cut easy to manage when I need to air dry. I was also pretty nervous about visiting a higher end salon. I'd previously only gone to large chain salons, and was worried that I'd be uncomfortable at Hugo, but that was definitely not the case. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. I'm not very chatty when getting my haircut, and didn't feel pressured to talk, but was comfortable sharing my opinions about my hair, AND details about my dogs and cats, with all of the stylists I worked with. I also asked for suggestions for products to purchase because I usually just buy what's on sale at the grocery store. I mentioned that I like to shampoo and condition, but don't often use heat or a lot of product to style my hair. Taylor recommended Shampoo and Conditioner, but didn't try to sell me a ton of styling products. I really appreciated that. I definitely recommend Hugo! They are an awesome high end salon, but will go out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable. read more

I used to go to Hugo, but then I grew my hair out for five years. I went back last summer and it was a disaster. Katie never even asked how long my hair should be in the back. My glasses were off and I couldn't see what she was doing; she took a straight razor and shaved the back of my head! She literally shaved off all my hair from about 3 inches above the natural hairline. The rest was way too short but at least I still had hair. It was two months before the back was the length I wanted it in the first place, and about a month before the rest was near where I had wanted it. And that horrible experience cost me $80. It was so bad that when my hair finally was long enough to cut again, I got a better cut at Hair Cuttery. I will never go back. read more

Yikes! I stopped yelping but I felt it was my duty to save someone else's hair out there. I could not wait to try this place out from recommendations and reviews so I booked an appointment with Sandra on a Friday evening after I got off work. The 1 star I give was actually for the atmosphere and music. I do not think any other salon in the DMV area will blast The Weeknd and Kelly Rowland. The music playing is superb... definitely for a more hip crowd. Not for grandmas or soccer moms. The stylists there were all amazingly gorgeous and stylish. They all looked like they popped out of a fashion blog. Funky hair colors, cut off shorts, tattoos,... they had their own swag going on which I loved. I could not stop staring at them! Hot! My hair: I went in with medium brown hair with light subtle highlights. I wanted a change so I asked Sandra to match my roots and dye my hair a natural medium brown and to tone out any of the red and brassiness. I also asked for dimensional color... possibly 2-3 colors added so it does not look flat. She told me she will match the brown color and the highlights I already had would peek through and create dimension. I should have left the salon right there and then but I wanted to give her a chance. Hair dye applied. I sat listening to music and flipping through a magazine. Hello? No one is offering me water or coffee? Sheesh. So it was washout time. Sandra seated me in a chair to be shampooed while she ran off. I sat there 15+ minutes with the dye on my hair to be removed. Finally when the shampoo girl got to me I had a bad feeling that the dye was just sitting on my hair too long. Voila! Dye off, I am sitting in the chair again looking at my BLACK HAIR! WTF??? She dried a section and told me once my whole head is dry it will look better. She then noticed I still had brassy red in my hair so I ended up with a black and red ugly mess! She asked her boss Tony who was next to hair for her opinion. She barely gave a glance and said it looks good. Gr! Sandra told me to come back the next day to re-do it. Hell no. I went somewhere else and spent $200 to correct the ugly mess. I could not be seen with that super dark hair... it did not match me at all! I went back after I had my hair corrected and expressed my disappointment. Boss lady Tony said to bring in a picture next time.... For real? I wanted my root color. I do not need a picture for that. Don't try to blame me because your salon or stylist could not deliver. Ugly super dark black splotchy hair. $70 waste. Will never return. Would not recommend. Athanasia is my hair stylist. She does and awesome job with my hair and everyone elses that I know of. I always recommend her to other people who stop ask me who colored or styled my hair. She is always busy and is always booked, but that is always a great sign at any salon. She is one of the top stylist and I think she is the best at the salon :) Doug is another stylist that does the job . He is such a perfectionist, he's done my hair before and i walked out very happy. ( he's my 2nd option when Athanasia isnt in) If you need a full head massage that will leave you sleeping on the seat, ask for Mercedes to wash your hair.. Shes great! One of my pet peeves of living in the DC area is the cost of haircuts, and the difficulty of finding a decent stylist. I have long-ish straight-ish hair that really shouldn't be difficult to cut, but it's truly surprising how many sub-par haircuts I've gotten. I visited Hugo thanks to a Groupon. The stylist who cut my hair typically charges $60, but due to the coupon I paid $30. I wasn't thrilled with the way my hair was washed (rather roughly) by the shampoo lady, but the stylist seemed nice and has been working at Hugo for a number of years and thus I hoped she'd be capable of providing me with a good cut. It often takes me a couple of weeks to see whether a cut is working or not...and now, a while after I've gotten the cut, I'm seeing that this haircut just is not that great, and certainly not worth $60. I really like this place. From the moment you walk in you're greeted and can tell you'll be well taken care of. My daughter is mixed and wanted her hair straightened. I called the salon and asked for a senior stylist to make sure we got what we wanted (not to say if they aren't a "senior stylist" your hair won't look great) but with my past experience at other salons i always ask for one. I have a long relationship with Hugo Salon, it started in 1999. I settled in with a stylist and about a year later she left; I was told she moved back to Vietnam. I saw another stylist, she left; I was told she moved to Mexico. I was disenchanted and decided to look for another salon. I found my first stylist at another salon in Rockville but wasn't happy. I bounced around and finally found a salon that was where many of the old stylists from Hugo had landed, but the place was very stiff and filled with prima donna attitude. I still was not happy. About two years ago, I decided to give Hugo another try. Samantha is a rockstar in cutting and highlighting my curly locks. She was exactly what I was looking for: a stylist that listens to my concerns and knows what she's doing. In the past I have been frustrated by stylists that don't know how to cut to curly hair; they have one cut and they use it on everyone. I have never been disappointed with Sam, but if I were, I am confident she would work to make sure it was corrected. My youngest son let Doug cut his hair and is actually letting me take him back. My oldest son has even been convinced to finally let someone cut his beautiful tresses after a 3 year hiatus from haircuts. Yes, his hair is halfway down his back. The other stylists at Hugo are wonderful too based on what I've seen. The ladies who shampoo your hair are fabulous and give you a relaxing mini head massage. Mercedes is my favorite; she has been there as long as I can remember. The atmosphere is energetic, cooperative, and friendly. It's almost like a family. read more

I love Hugo Salon. First off, I think the vibe here is great. Lots of young people, music blasting, and movies playing in the waiting room. This is not your mother's stuffy Potomac salon. Secondly, It has free parking, try finding that ANYWHERE else. I am a loyal fan of Doug. A few years ago I was tired of going to my $500 a haircut curly hair specialist in the Tysons area, and called up Hugo Salon and asked if they had anyone who was good with curly hair. They matched me with Doug, who may not know how to dry curly hair- but always gives me the most amazing cuts. My hair has never been so manageable. He is also brilliant with color. My previous stylist was highlighting my hair with a shade that was way too blonde and using way too much of it. Doug does what ever I want (even if on occasion he not in favor of it, and I am ALWAYS in the wrong). My advice is, if you find a stylist you like, stick with them. I took one star off because there have been occasions where the stylists have been too involved with their own gossiping and my blow out has taken three times as long as it should. read more
