However, the experience my mother and I had at this establishment was so disappointing that I feel compelled to share it. My mother brought in the dress she planned to wear to my wedding for alterations. When we picked it up, we noticed several blue ink marks on the dress. I calmly said, "Oh my goodness, could you please take a look at these stains?" At that point, the man I believe to be Abel immediately began yelling at me, told me to "shut up," and insisted I was making a big deal out of the situation. He repeatedly used profanity while speaking to us. Throughout the interaction, I remained calm and chose not to argue or escalate the situation. His wife then came out with a wet cloth and attempted to remove the ink marks. While she was apologetic and made an effort to address the issue, the stains were not completely removed. Upon further inspection, we also noticed that the hem of the dress was uneven. We paid over $200 for these alterations and expected to receive quality workmanship and professional customer service. We were not asking for a favor--we were paying customers expecting the service we had paid for. My mother and I are hardworking people who make a conscious effort to support small businesses because we value the work they do. We also believe in treating others with respect, regardless of the circumstances. Unfortunately, that same respect was not extended to us. While I appreciate the wife's attempt to remedy the issue, the behavior we experienced was unacceptable and unprofessional. WE WERE NOT LOOKING FOR A DISCOUNT AND WE PAID THE FULL AMOUNT WE AGREED ON. Based on the quality of the work and, more importantly, the way we were treated, I cannot recommend this business. They took the time to understand exactly what I needed and made me feel confident leaving my clothes in their care. I usually go with the flow when alterations are not ready on the date promised and when pricing is on the high end. But it seems just wrong to take advantage of the very customers who patronize you when it's just as easy to do the work themselves. So, as for why I didn't just do it myself when I made others. I've been every deliberate about supporting small local businesses during the quarantine largely because I believe those interactions will help the businesses cover expenses and stay open. I bought fabric to make washable masks for female loved ones who are first responders (pharmacy, medical, supply chain, etc) thinking they'd appreciate a specialty facial covering to wear in their off days once some restrictions are limited --- knowing we'll be wearing these for a while. After learning Maria was open for business and making masks, I decided to give her the business instead. During my visit, she showed me several reversible washable styles she sells for $8. I bought two. After buying 2 @ $8, I mentally prepared to pay something close (or less) to that because she would supply fabric for the back and ear straps. The ones I bought from her for $8 and reversible. Timing was reasonable--- a week to make 16 adult masks and 2 kids. When I returned to pick them up, I was pleased with how they turned out but was shocked by the price! I was charged $10 per mask for a one sided mask. I pointed out the price was higher than what I was charged when she provided fabric. Despite feeling gouged, I paid it not because I wanted to believe she must have needed the $ enough to essentially overcharge a repeat consumer. While the one bad experience will not erase better experiences and quality, I have no plans to bring more work I can do myself or seek anything else without getting the price upfront.

I now present you with this, a new first thought when someone says "Tampico". Tampico is a neighborhood tailor shop. No frills, no fancy dressed Tim Gunn-esque dude taking your measurements. Just a couple of guys who look like they've been doing this kind of work forever. You stand in front of the mirror wearing each garment and tell them exactly what you want done. Mr. Tailor has some magic chalk/wax pen that he uses to "take notes" on your clothes. Four days later my items are ready for pickup (don't forget your ticket). So instead of my plan to gain weight so my suits fit again, I was able to come here, spend $80 and make two suits and an additional pair of pants brand new again. And that was DEFINITELY cheaper than buying two new suits. Make it work! I watched too much project runway, I know.
