Hugo's, much like Herman's Rib House is a Fayetteville tradition. Since the late 70's Hugo's has been serving an eclectic American classic menu ( with some European influences). A well established hangout for Hog Fans especially on game day and you may even run into some Razorbacks legends while you are there. Pros: Consistent, quality food at a reasonable price. Great menu selection from crepes to steaks and everything in between. Cons: Hugo's is a basement restaurant location. This means seating is limited and the wait can be long. The stairs leading down to the restaurant can be hard to navigate if you are physically impaired, and depending on the day or time of the it can get quite noisy. If stairs, togetherness and nosiy spaces are not your thing, then this isn't the establishment for you. Overall, you can't go wrong with the food or hospitality, and if you're a Razorback fan, student, or alumni of the University of Arkansas dining here is a right of passage. Went with some friends and my son, plus their two kids. Everyone LOVED their food!! Their burgers are simply some of the best you will find and will just melt in your mouth. The place is always busy so prepare for a 30-40 minute wait as we went on a Monday during the summer break and they were still busy around 7pm. The place has been around since 1917??? so everyone wants to try an ole' original while in town. It is in the basement so low ceilings and it is fairly noisy but the place is worth it as it is all part of the nostalgia. Their desserts are worth saving room for. Hugo's opened in 1977 and I went there for the first time w/ my brother. The burgers, fresh cut fries, and fresh fried chips were fantastic and still to this day are delicious. The service was great, and as usual the place was packed -- even on a Monday night. Hugo's is also a bar, so the atmosphere is a bit darkly lit, as would be expected. Not far from the University campus, below a dress shop, in the cellar is Hugo's. It's a very bohemian type of sandwich/hamburger shop. It can be hard to find at first if you don't know it is in the basement. At first I thought it was a college hangout. More accurately, I think it's a lunch spot for the local bankers and businessmen. You do see a few parents eating lunch with their college age children, but far more business people. Hugo's has those pilled high deli type sandwiches and juicy burgers. Their fries are very popular even though every sandwich comes with homemade chips. I had a tuna melt which was delicious and served on dark rye bread. My friend had Derek's Special which was a marinated chicken breast hoagie style sandwich. That was also excellent. Service is always friendly and attentive. One grumpy, non-smiling guy works the cash register at the bar. He probably owns the place. I really don't know. Hugo's is a legendary place. You have to try it. We came by for dinner after a long night and then followed up by a long afternoon on the road. And man, this stop was worth it! We started with the spinach artichoke dip. The chips were seasoned perfectly and the dip itself was delicious We both ordered different chicken sandwiches and split a basket of fries. The chicken was seasoned and grilled perfectly. Ordered App - Potato Skins. There were 5 to an order and I wish there were more. It came with Sour Cream, but I wish I would have asked for ranch. Pretty tasty. We ate everything and wanted more. Regular Cheeseburger - this was a dang good cheeseburger. Poppyseed bun reminded me of Jake's back in Dallas. Meat was great. Heck ya. I would come back and order again. Side of chips were good. The rice was unseasoned and the waiter said the fries arent seasoned but we had salt and pepper at the table. The food was just okay. The cheese was delicious, but wish it came with some sort of jam or honey. Some bread came with the cheese plate, but it was soft and I wish it was toasted so we could have used it as a "chip" with the cheese. The chips and guac and salsa were alright, although the chips left much to be desired. They seemed like the Tostitos chips you get at the grocery store. The ambiance of the place is super cool. It's in a basement and is decorated with a bunch of different historical items on the walls.
