Hugo's, much like Herman's Rib House is a Fayetteville tradition. Since the late 70's Hugo's has been serving an eclectic American classic menu ( with some European influences). A well established hangout for Hog Fans especially on game day and you may even run into some Razorbacks legends while you are there. Pros: Consistent, quality food at a reasonable price. Great menu selection from crepes to steaks and everything in between. Cons: Hugo's is a basement restaurant location. This means seating is limited and the wait can be long. The stairs leading down to the restaurant can be hard to navigate if you are physically impaired, and depending on the day or time of the it can get quite noisy. If stairs, togetherness and nosiy spaces are not your thing, then this isn't the establishment for you. Overall, you can't go wrong with the food or hospitality, and if you're a Razorback fan, student, or alumni of the University of Arkansas dining here is a right of passage. Hugo's opened in 1977 and I went there for the first time w/ my brother. The burgers, fresh cut fries, and fresh fried chips were fantastic and still to this day are delicious. Not far from the University campus, below a dress shop, in the cellar is Hugo's. It's a very bohemian type of sandwich/hamburger shop. It can be hard to find at first if you don't know it is in the basement. At first I thought it was a college hangout. More accurately, I think it's a lunch spot for the local bankers and businessmen. You do see a few parents eating lunch with their college age children, but far more business people. Hugo's has those pilled high deli type sandwiches and juicy burgers. Their fries are very popular even though every sandwich comes with homemade chips. I had a tuna melt which was delicious and served on dark rye bread. My friend had Derek's Special which was a marinated chicken breast hoagie style sandwich. That was also excellent. Service is always friendly and attentive. One grumpy, non-smiling guy works the cash register at the bar. He probably owns the place. I really don't know. Hugo's is a legendary place. You have to try it. We came by for dinner after a long night and then followed up by a long afternoon on the road. And man, this stop was worth it! We started with the spinach artichoke dip. The chips were seasoned perfectly and the dip itself was delicious We both ordered different chicken sandwiches and split a basket of fries. The chicken was seasoned and grilled perfectly. Yes, this place is an ORIGINAL, and if you have never been, you NEED to go! Not only is this an old original but this place has fantastic food. Their burgers are so fresh that they scream delish. They have a fully stocked bar and if you run across the barkeep Kirby (hopefully I am spelling it right) she will treat you like family. I was saving room for dessert and she convinced me to try the Apple Pie and it was one of the BEST ever. I was set on getting their infamous Grasshopper Crepes so I also got their Mint Chocolate Ice Cream which was also fantastic. This place is small and cozy and busy a good bit of the time. Came here on a Friday night with a group of six. Place was packed, and the wait was 20 minutes. I loved the atmosphere, and our server, Blake was excellent. He recommended the Reuben to one of my friends, and it did not disappoint. Blake said my friend would regret ordering it if he didn't.
