Hugo's opened in 1977 and I went there for the first time w/ my brother. The burgers, fresh cut fries, and fresh fried chips were fantastic and still to this day are delicious. The service was great, and as usual the place was packed -- even on a Monday night. Hugo's is also a bar, so the atmosphere is a bit darkly lit, as would be expected. If you haven't tried Hugo's, get to it!

New to NWA and had heard this was a must try. DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Got there about 11:20 on a Saturday and it was already pretty full. We sat at the bar and had excellent service! Started with guac and chips. I'm from Texas so a bit of a guac snob. Their guac is excellent. I had the Rueben and man it was great. My boyfriend had the jalapeno cheese burger and loved it. Great old school vibes. My bf didn't like the fries I loved them. Oh and their ranch drinkable. Just get there early or be prepared to wait.

I have and will drive 5 hours for this burger. The best, well within 5 hours of Dallas. The service, as usual was outstanding. Burger, outstanding and the basement and old typewriter factory ambiance is cool. Best burger I have ever eaten.

Great dinner selection and local establishment. The bar has a solid bourbon selection as well!

Ordered the mushroom crepe and tried the chili burger during my second time here and both were just what we needed during a Saturday afternoon. Didn't realize there was a basketball game later that day so it was absolutely busy. 30min wait for a table for 2. The staff works hard and fast to make sure the restaurant runs smoothly.

Not far from the University campus, below a dress shop, in the cellar is Hugo's. It's a very bohemian type of sandwich/hamburger shop. It can be hard to find at first if you don't know it is in the basement. At first I thought it was a college hangout. More accurately, I think it's a lunch spot for the local bankers and businessmen. You do see a few parents eating lunch with their college age children, but far more business people. Hugo's has those pilled high deli type sandwiches and juicy burgers. Their fries are very popular even though every sandwich comes with homemade chips. I had a tuna melt which was delicious and served on dark rye bread. My friend had Derek's Special which was a marinated chicken breast hoagie style sandwich. That was also excellent. Service is always friendly and attentive. One grumpy, non-smiling guy works the cash register at the bar. He probably owns the place. I really don't know. Hugo's is a legendary place. You have to try it. Maybe you can get the grumpy guy to smile.

The burgers were amazing! It is definitely worth the wait! The patties taste amazing! We ended up sitting at the bar and the service from the bartenders was great! This place is a must try if you're visiting Fayetteville! It's a great local hole in the wall! I'll definitely be back to Hugo's!

We came by for dinner after a long night and then followed up by a long afternoon on the road. And man, this stop was worth it! We started with the spinach artichoke dip. The chips were seasoned perfectly and the dip itself was delicious We both ordered different chicken sandwiches and split a basket of fries. The chicken was seasoned and grilled perfectly. And the fries were done off my fav! I love home style fries. Our bartender was awesome as well. It send we found a great local spot to grab a drink and a good meal. By the time we were leaving the place was packed. But the employees seen to have service figured out and they were able to help guests seamlessly

Hugo's is an institution in Fayetteville. Very cool spot right off the square. It's half a level below the street and kinda has "Cheers" TV show vibes. In addition to the cool atmosphere, the food and service was on point. Great burgers and fries were hitting!

Packed. This place was packed, so the service was a bit slow. The food? The cheeseburger was really good and well seasoned. It comes with potato chips. The fries were soggy. They need to up the temperatures on their fryer. The fries were limp. There is a possibility that they were cut fresh. If that's the case, they need to learn how to pre-fry, freeze and then fry again. It would make them crispier. This is in a basement of a building.

Possibly the best burger you'll ever eat in one of the coolest restaurants you'll ever visit. What a cool building! Always busy, but they get you in and out fairly quick and the service is great. Don't let the limited seating scare you away, and if you do have to wait, the food is absolutely worth it.

Driving through Fayetteville, I had to stop at Hammontree's Grilled Cheese. I've seen this place…read moreall over the internet for years, so it finally made the list. First impressions were a bit mixed. The restaurant was quiet, but the floors were noticeably dirty, and the restrooms were just okay. Nothing outrageously bad, but definitely not as clean as I would expect for such a slow night. The service was probably the biggest disappointment. Our server wasn't rude, but she wasn't particularly welcoming either. She took our order, dropped off the food, and brought the check without ever really checking back in. There were only three occupied tables in the restaurant with three servers working, so it wasn't like they were overwhelmed. One thing that really stood out was that every employee in the dining room except the bartender had headphones either in their ears or hanging around their necks. It gave the impression that customer service wasn't much of a priority. I started by ordering a sweet tea, only to be told they don't have it because they brew their tea in-house and "can't add sugar." That explanation seemed a little odd. I switched to a Coke instead, which turned out to be one of the flattest fountain drinks I've had in a long time. After a few sips, I gave up and just drank water. Now for the part that really matters: the food. We ordered the Kids Rookie grilled cheese and the Big Dog from the kids' menu, along with the Cheebacca and the Brie's Company. We also couldn't leave without trying the Blueberry Grilled Cheese for dessert. The only real miss on the food side was the chips. They were stale, cold, and almost rubbery. Honestly, they were some of the worst house chips you could possibly have. The sandwiches deserve a much better side, or they'd honestly be better off taking the chips off the menu altogether. The kids' meals were an incredible value at only $5 each. My 5-year-old couldn't decide between a grilled cheese and a hot dog, so he got both. The Big Dog was excellent--hot, juicy, and grilled just long enough to get those perfect char marks. The Rookie was exactly what you'd want for a picky eater: simple, cheesy, and well made. The Cheebacca ($12) was packed with sharp white cheddar, house cheese, bacon, pulled pork, grilled onions, and a garlic cilantro sauce on sourdough. Every ingredient complemented the next, and nothing overpowered the sandwich. Easily one I'd order again. The Brie's Company ($12) was the surprise of the meal. Grilled apples, Brie, Gouda, caramelized onions, and fig jam on sourdough sounded adventurous, but it absolutely worked. Sweet, savory, rich, and balanced all at once. If you're willing to step outside the traditional grilled cheese, this one is worth trying. Then came dessert. The Blueberry Grilled Cheese ($7.25) combines mascarpone, cream cheese, fresh blueberries, and honey between slices of grilled pound cake. It sounds unusual, but somehow it's fantastic. It's one of those desserts that makes you question why you've never had it before. Awkwardly delicious in the best possible way, and absolutely worth ordering. Overall, Hammontree's is a place where the kitchen is doing almost everything right while the front of house leaves quite a bit to be desired. Cleaner dining areas, better service, and replacing those terrible chips would easily push this into 4 star territory. As it stands, the food absolutely lives up to the hype, but the overall experience holds it back. If you're passing through Fayetteville, it's still worth stopping in. Just skip the chips, order one of the specialty grilled cheeses, and don't leave without trying the dessert.
