We just left Hugo's Mexican Restaurant in Red Oak, Texas, and unfortunately our experience was disappointing this time. We had to send our queso back because the meat tasted old. It was replaced with ground beef, which tasted much better. What also stood out was that the manager, Chris, walked around greeting every table except ours. We noticed he continued greeting other guests as people came and went, and as an African American family, it made us feel uncomfortable and overlooked. This is not the kind of experience we are used to at Hugo's. Previous managers have always been welcoming and treated everyone fairly, which is one reason we've continued supporting this restaurant over the years. The food was also mediocre compared to past visits and definitely did not taste the same. We have never sent food back before and really hated having to do so, but we didn't want to risk getting sick. We do plan to return because Hugo's has always been known for good food and great customer service. We just hope Chris was simply having an off day, or that improvements are made so every customer feels equally welcomed and valued. read more

The food is the reason to go there. The wait staff is hit or miss. If you're there in the evening the bar crowd can be loud and distracting. Music is at times too loud but the food is top notch. read more

Came into this place because I was hungry and saw it had 4 stars. Walked in, and the food smelled delicious! Was seated by my server and looked over the menu after careful deliberation. I ordered a Carne asada burrito and an add-on cheese enchilada with salsa Roja. The menu looked pretty good, and the prices were pretty reasonable. So it took about 10 minutes for my food to come out, not a bad wait cause I had complimentary chips and salsa, which the salsa was pretty good. The first thing I ate was the cheese enchilada it was really good. The only thing I didn't like was the thick onion chunks in it. Other than that, they didn't skimp on the cheese ate it all up! Then I started working in the burrito only, ate, maybe half. The Carne asada was not overcooked and was pretty soft. the only thing that us gonna suvk is trying to reheat it since I took most of it home because it has lettuce in side. The frijoles ranchers were pretty tasty and had great flavor. Found this gem randomly! No disappointment here! Our group of five were all satisfied with our orders and the service was great and friendly! I forgot her name but she was charming, pleasant and very attentive. I asked her what she would recommend for a hungry and big eater. She said "the meat lovers"!!! I was sold right there on the spot! Literally some of the best Mexican food I've had. I wish we lived closer because we would be going here all the time. The service was just okay, but the food made up for it. We had the chicken tortilla soup, birria tacos, tres enchiladas, and Mexican salad. The tortilla soup was so flavorful and full of chicken, this is exactly what I want when I'm sick or on a cold day- to die for! My husband even liked it and he's not a soup guy. We tried the tres enchiladas to get variety, and all 3 were delicious. The birria tacos were huge, packed with meat, and tasty. And my husband's Mexican salad was a huge portion too. I knew that Hugo's had shown up on the Red Oak radar some time ago; but we just hadn't checked them out. It was mid-afternoon and that's always a good time to show up for lunch on a weekday. We were seated immediately and service was forthcoming. Hugo's has a large Tex-Mex menu with modest prices and they waste no space. There are appetizers on the front with little photos and I picked the Shrimp ceviche tostada for $7. Inside the menu, I opted for the small size Chicken Tortilla Soup ($8). I checked out a number of tasty sounding traditional listings before making my decision. My spouse chose from the Parrilladas group. He selected the Monse - A combination of pork, steak, chicken, sausage and grilled shrimp served in a molcajete. It came with rice, charro beans, grilled onions, guacamole, sour cream and tortillas. ($25) The salsa was spicy and chilled. Just delicious! My husband's entree was generous and well prepared. He really enjoyed it. There was definitely enough in the molcajete for two and he took quite a bit home. My ceviche seemed authentic with perfect shrimp and the tiny cucumber dice; but tasted bland. It was dry and lacked citrus and salt. I used the lime wedges given, salsa and some table salt and had about half. I took the rest home to let it marinate some more. The soup bowl was packed with shredded chicken, zucchini and yellow squash, carrots, cheese, avocado slices, and crispy tortilla strips. I added salsa; but that's a personal preference and a little lime. It was good. There are lunch specials from 11 - 2, a kids menu, and desserts. They do have a bar and numerous booths and tables and chairs for seating. I remember when a major franchise opened in this space 9 years ago. This place has taken a beating since and I'm afraid there's not any ambiance to speak of. The wonderful bathrooms are new, though, and immaculate. The restaurant itself is also very clean. But the Yellow and Red paint with the Black tables and chairs is frankly bleak. Go for the food and the friendly, efficient and sweet service. There's plenty of parking in this giant shopping center parking lot. You can sit out front and watch the world go by as you eat, too! read more

I love Hugo's we have been coming here since finding it near the house. The staff is always nice, it's clean inside they play good music that's not overwhelming where you can still hear your conversations. Foods pretty good, waitresses are always super nice and on the ball, great atmosphere! Cut off two stars though because of the owners son. Dude is a bad word I don't think I'm allowed to type in here. To the point that in the future when we go, if he's there we will be leaving. Ordered two things to go the exact same except one was chicken and the other steak. Wouldn't even look at me when I went to pay him?? Got the steak order almost entirely wrong, except it was at least the correct dish, and only got a half a bag of chips. Acted like it was our fault when we drove back to get it fixed and ask for another bag. A good shopping center, mom and pop restaurant. We've eaten there a couple times now, including lunch before 11am. The food is good, fresh, made to order. I highly recommend. The music selection was interesting as they didn't play any Mexican music. I do think they could double their profits on the weekends if they included 4-6 breakfast options. Such as 2-3 egg plate with potatoes, bacon, toast, French toast or pancakes, omelets, and oatmeal. Easy. Those are low cost, fast, easy to prepare, and would go a long way and capture people that walk out when the waitress has to let them know you don't serve breakfast before 11:30am. Just a thought. .
