Takes too long. We've been here for 45 minutes watching people come & go. We took turns going to the restroom and to the car to wait in the AC with the dogs (it's 103 out today) - Apparently they've had our food in the back for 20 minutes because they didn't see us - even though two of us were in the courtyard waiting the whole time. By the time we got our food it was lukewarm/room temp but we were ready to go. The tray broke on the way to the car and one of the burgers completely fell out. They were nice and remade it, but that just took longer and those fries were still lukewarm. We were so anxious to get back in the road at this point that we were down the street before I realized my burger didn't have mustard. Overall the burgers were good, the fries below average, the hot dog just ok, the onion rings tasted like regular frozen onion rings and the shake was like anything from any other drive through. We come through Escalon a lot, but we are never just 'in' Escalon so for the wait we could have kept driving to the next town and paid a bit less. We will probably just keep going from now on. I can't believe they wouldn't serve us during drive thru. Went to get food and they didn't say anything so we pulled up to the window and the employees literally ignored us. We honked, we knocked on the window. Seriously.. saw 4 people leave the drive thru. Update: we called and the lady answered said they are busy and there is only 2 people working. I'll start with the service, I couldn't meet the nicest people that work at the this establishment.. We were heading East after evacuating from a fire near our home in Santa Cruz mountains. Our server whom I didn't catch her name (she does have 6 kids if that helps), was an absolute Rockstar. We were exhausted not having slept , had an excellent breakfast, and got to spend some time with this supremely caring and thoughtful server. She set the bar for small home town kindness with her warm heart. Thank you Hula's and the server whom I didn't catch her name. Great place! They got everything. I've been coming here since I was a kid when it was called Escalon drive-in.

4.5, but I lean toward 5 because if you are in Escalon, you have very limited options for dining and you should absolutely stop at Hula's. This place is legit. I grabbed menus and business cards to hand out to my friends who are always complaining about having to stop for fast food on the way to Yosemite. If this place were anywhere else, it'd still be a good choice for burgers and fries - especially at its fantastic prices - but seriously, if you are in Escalon and hungry, this is the best option I've found. Burgers range from $6.45 to $8.95, are big burgers, and come with fries and a small soft serve ice cream. I don't know how they win with the ice cream treat... it's small, but it's enough to stop my dessert craving (so, i will never buy ice cream there, which is on the menu for sale). Anyway, the patty was large and flavorful, and the lettuce and tomato were fresh. Food came out fast, and the service was friendly. Even the soda was good - you never know if it will be, coming out of machines. You can also substitute garlic fries, sweet potato fries, chili fries, or cheese and bacon fries, for a small charge. 1st time trying Hula's and got the Tri tip nacho fries, omg soooooo good!! The pieces of meat are tender and it has tiny pieces of chopped jalepenos, so it has a lil spice kick to it. Can't wait to get it again and try other food from them. I got extra cheese with it btw, so worth it! :D read more

Local boy comes home . . . local boy had ice cream at the local Frostie's a few blocks away when growing up . . . local boy saw that the Frostie's turned into a Hula's . . . and local boy finally ate at Hula's on his recent trip to the big city of Escalon. My guess is Hula's describes the front of the building more than anything. Inside, it's a local's burger place. Seating available outside, as many seats as inside. Sports crazy, especially for local sports. An EHS classmate of mine had donated his football jersey to decorate the already-crowded wall. Legend has it that when the high school football team won the state championship in `11, the head coach stayed here all day and bought everyone's lunch as thanks for their support. It's that kind of restaurant. Now, the food: inexpensive and good. "Best burger in the valley" may be overstated, there are many hundreds of miles and thousands of burger joints between Red Bluff and Bakersfield, but it's still well worth the money. My hunny had a basic cheeseburger, she liked it a lot. I had the unusual chicken-fried steak inside a bun (Bob's Bunyan), and I loaded it with Tabasco sauce. It was a good idea and great taste, I don't know why other restaurants haven't tried it. Complimentary ice cream at the end. Service was slow, but the place was busy. No surprise, being on the main highway between San Francisco and Yosemite. Any slowness or rudeness we got, I attribute it to a party of 20 that placed their order a few minutes before we got there on a Saturday afternoon. If you live in Eski, you probably know about the place. If you're passing through on the way to the mountains, I encourage you to stop here. It's not a cookie-cutter franchise; it's local color with fantastic grub, gives you a real Central Valley flavor for your trip. read more

Maybe it's cause every time I stop here it's after a weekend of gambling and drinking but I really like this places food. I like the patio seating outside and the service is always good. I didn't get a picture of my burger cause I zoned out and was hungry. The burger was awesome though just meat cheese lettuce onion tomato and pickles. Simple but put together good. The onion rings were crisp and good. And my father in law loved his bacon and avocado sandwich. I will continue to stop here on my way through. Well, I'm back here again. This place is worth it. Food is fresh and the menu has just the right number of choices. Makes choosing easy and good variety. Breakfast is severed all day. The service is friendly and attentive but not to much so. 12 tables inside and 6 outside. A/C keeps the inside cool. Beer by the bottle is available if you like too. This would be a 5 star review as the food is excellent!!! However I attempted to order ahead and was left on hold for 27 minutes and when I arrived found the phone is off the hook. You ask why did I stay on hold so long? To validate how poor customer service is. I've frequented Hula's many times as the food is outstanding... customer service not so much! Good new I was able to go through the drive through and get fast service... less than 10min. I guess I'll have to manage my expectations better when trying to order ahead. read more

Friday night, it was getting late and we still had 120 more miles to cover before we got to Yosemite. I had 2 dogs in the car - one of which gets car sick and it's really just about getting from point A to Point B as fast as you can so you can put the poor guy out of his misery. But then we passed Hula's ... with their bright lights and outdoor seating ... I decided to flip a bitch to grab dinner here. This place is awesome! The service was very friendly as were all the other patrons. We sat outside and they had a bowl of fresh, clean ice water and doggie biscuits for my dogs. Within seconds, the manager (?) came out with 5 huge strips of bacon for my dogs. I was in love ... and so were the dogs! While I didn't give my dogs all the bacon (no I didn't eat it myself), I was sold. I think I told all 30 of my fellow campers about this place that weekend. My friends and I all ordered burgers and all of them were delicious. They have a burger selection to rival any burger joint in the city - but here, they got outdoor seating, friendly service, bacon for my dogs - all without the hassel of city nusances. I grew up in suburbia ... so this place reminded me of what summer nights are supposed to be .... 9:00 PM on a Friday night, and everyone is heading to the local burger joint for fries and milkshakes. I don't go to Yosemite often - but I would recommend this place to anyone passing thru on their way there. It's a gem! read more

Can't say it's a 5 star. My first time trying it today I'm from LATHROP and recently moved out 3 yrs ago and it seemed like this place had good reviews but everything was bland. Delicious, moist, lot's of options and extras, I highly recommend the Guacomole burger. Escalon burger was SO good! The grilled onions and mushrooms were to die for. Sweet potato fries and onions rings were also delicious. Coffee was gross diner style, but that isn't too unusual at a burger joint. Service was friendly and quick. They also have $1 beer specials which we didn't partake in, but good to know exist. And they give you a chocolate/vanilla swirl mini cup of soft serve at the end of your meal. Atmosphere is burger barn joint style, but cute. Place seemed a tiny bit run down, with fraying table cloths under the glass and some dusty areas, but it wasn't bad. We'll definitely be back when passing through town! read more

While travelling to the Bay Area via Hwy 120, I have wanted to try Hula's and not wanting to wait until my Oakland destination I tried the Ecalon Burger with cheese, grilled mushrooms and onions the menu said this was a local favorite. Hula's has always been a family favorite, if it's ice cream or sandwiches, or burgers it's a definite go to. We love all the waitresses there, very sweet girls who are eager and willing to help. Isabella was our girl the other day and she kept us super happy and satisfied. We enjoy the patio seating and indoor. The complimentary ice cream after your meal is the cherry on top. read more

I'm so disappointed, our favorite place to come to on our way down the hill from the lake, normally bringing a group of people. During the last year we still came, we ordered ahead & used outdoor seating or chowed down in the parking lot. The last 2 visits this month.... The stuffed skins ate still really good, and cheese hotdog was exactly as promised, cheese, hotdog, bun. However, last time the garlic fries were half cold mush, today the chili cheese fries were essentially refried pinto beans slopped on the middle third of some tired fries, a few pieces of gray hamburger and a dollop of what looked like nacho cheese on top. I returned it, this was nothing like we'd had in the past. What changed? I dunno. I also cringe at the styrofoam, so maybe we should consider our options next time.. read more

Hula's offer a lot of good combinations of burger toppings. The Escalon Burger and Guacamole Burger were both decent combinations. However, the buns were not toasted and the meat itself was pretty similar to In & Out's. Their standard fries have obviously been sitting around since they were cold, dry and soft. On the other hand, the Sweet Potato Fries were freshly fried and pretty good. The Cherry Shake tastes good (with artificial coloring). It is a good option on a long weekend after a trip to Yosemite/Hetch Hetchie when everything else is closed. Otherwise, there are probably better options in Oakdale or Modesto. read more

We returned a week later and were disappointed. Quality control is clearly an issue here. The knockout burger was made differently the second time and not nearly as good as it was the first time. The first time the burger had fresh green leaf lettuce the second time it was ice burg lettuce that was mainly the core it was almost all white. The tomatoes were mushy and the pieces that were on the burgers were all ends that should have been thrown away. The jalapeños instead of being fresh slices look like they had been cooked and had burnt pieces on them. Although they say they serve breakfast all day it may depend on who is cooking as to weather or not you receive a freshly made plate of food. The first time the scrambled eggs were cooked correctly and the waffle was crisp and fresh as was the bacon. The second time the scrambled egg was brown, over cooked and looked like it had been cooked on a filthy griddle. The waffle had clearly been cooked earlier and had been microwaved or something before being served. It was overly hot, soft and spongy and the bacon was cold. They did give a small discount on the breakfast plate as that was the only thing we complained about. It's a 25 mile drive from our home and we drove back because it was so exceptional the first time. We may return one more time to see if the last visit was fluke. read more

Took over 30 min to get a omelet and it was over done (browned) and the American cheese was plopped on top and half melted. Where is the cook that used to be here? I want to start this review off with, my family loves this place. We've been coming for years after spending weekends at the lake. We've never had a bad experience or bad food. Yesterday I came with my family and we waited an hour to get our food. I'm a manager at a restaurant in Tracy so I understand sometimes things take longer to come out due to staffing issues. But our server never came to check on us at all during the long wait for the food. Multiple tables that sat down way after us were served and finished eating before we received any food. When she finally came out she came to tell us it would be out In a few minutes. We understood. She came out a few minutes later saying what my dad ordered they were out of. I wasn't understanding how our food went from "almost done" to being told they don't have it. My dad ordered something else and the server did take it off the bill which was nice of her. My husband and dad were out of drinks for a while and she didn't offer to refill until the food finally came out. When she did bring refills she didn't bring the correct drink for my dad and husband. After we received our food, our server didn't come back so we had to approach the front for silverware, boxes and refills. On the other hand, our food was delicious! We wouldn't of minded waiting so long if the server had actually communicated with us what was going on or came out to check on us. Instead, my family felt like she forgot about us out there because of how many people came and went . Don't get me wrong, we absolutely love this place but were a little disappointed with yesterday's experience. read more
