My out of town guests love them too when I bring them here. I'm here to rave about their weekend only croissants. You can only get them on Saturday or Sunday because it takes a days to ferment and laminate the dough. The quality of their ingredients shines in even the simplest plain croissant. I'll occasionally venture into the chocolate or almond version. They rival some of the best I've had in NYC, SF or Paris. In KC, the only other rivals can be found at French Market or Sour Rabbit Bakery. I'm glad their croissants are weekend only so I can have them as an occasional treat. I find their other pastries, especially the tarts, biscuits or scones are also lovely. For a baked goods focused spot, I'd say their cold brew is also pretty great quality as well. Usually I'd go to another coffee shop for a fix, but I'm okay grabbing both a croissant and cold brew here. There's definitely a trick to drinking it without getting the tea leaves through the straw. As we enjoyed our snack and drink we could tell the caffeine kicks in a little later. So, if you're up to trying traditional yerba mate, be aware that you'll get a gradual burst of energy a little later. I personally loved the decor and the atmosphere here. They had little knick knacks you could purchase, a small refrigerator with items to take with you as well. I got a couple of key chains for my sister and myself and my boyfriend and I have already noted that we want to come back here the next time we're in Kansas City!

This review is for Louie's Reserve Restaurant, in the former location of Cafe Trio…read more Last night, we dined at Louie's Reserve on the Plaza during its grand opening. It's an elevated version of Louie's Wine Dive, located in the former Café Trio space. We were dining with another couple, and all four of us had wonderful memories of Café Trio, although none of us had visited in the past few years. VinZant Restaurants purchased Café Trio last fall and has introduced a new concept, menu and chef, while giving the interior a bit of a refresh. For the grand opening, Louie's offered a four-course dinner for $70, with three choices for each course and two dessert options. Even better, half of the proceeds from the evening were donated to Children's Mercy Hospital. That was a terrific way to introduce the restaurant to Kansas City. I also think any new restaurant deserves some grace during its opening days. I understand a number of Café Trio employees stayed on with Louie's, which presumably gave the new operation some familiarity with the space and systems, but a new concept is still a new concept. For dinner, I chose the Tuna Crudo, Shrimp & Lobster Bisque, Pork Chop and Beignets. My wife selected the Brussels Sprouts, Farmer's Salad, Short Rib Agnolotti and Beignets. Our overall reaction was that the meal was good, but not yet great. The Brussels Sprouts and Farmer's Salad were the standouts. The other dishes were fine, but nothing really made us stop and say, "Wow, you have to try this." The pork chop, which our server recommended, was particularly disappointing. It had been char-grilled, but ours was dry and lacked much flavor. The Beignets also fell short for us. Admittedly, Café du Monde in New Orleans sets an awfully high bar, but if you've had beignets there, Louie's version doesn't come close to that experience. One thing that makes the food harder to fully evaluate is that we were ordering from a limited grand-opening menu. I've read that the regular menu will include dishes such as Rigatoni Bolognese and a reimagined version of Louie's classic Shrimp Diablo. Those may give us a much better sense of what the kitchen can do. Service also showed some opening-night growing pains. There was a long wait before a server initially arrived and another long gap before our drinks appeared. Once our food order was placed, however, the pacing improved considerably. I wouldn't judge Louie's too harshly based on its first few days, and I certainly wouldn't write it off. The setting is attractive, the concept has potential, and supporting Children's Mercy with the grand-opening event was a wonderful gesture. For us, though, this particular meal was more average than memorable. We'll give them some time to settle in and plan to return in a month or two to experience the full menu. I'm hoping our second visit gives us more reasons to become fans.

My partner and I got two different cold brews on tap today, the original and the Seasonal Single Origin Honduran one. The single origin Honduran was better, but their original was good too. There's a lot of seating, but it's usually taken up, so I tend to just take my coffee to go. Expect to walk out for around $6ish a cup.
