Great little place that we stumbled across on a road trip. Room was clean and comfortable, nothing spectacular but typical motel fare. The rate was a little higher than I think was justified, we paid $85. Had we known there was a town with plenty of motels just a couple of miles ahead, we probably would have looked for something a little cheaper since we were just sleeping and hitting the road. But they probably count on people like me not knowing that they're not the only game in town, who just are happy to have found a place under $100 after driving through those mountain roads forever. And I can't really fault them for that, I'd do the same thing! The desk clerk was great, very informative and gave us a lot of tips on what to do in the area. I hope the locals appreciate what a good ambassador for the area they have in him. read more

Looks cute so we thought... why not? No air conditioning ( not a big deal on the day we were there) Room was run down, but seemed reasonably clean. Carpet was awful, refused to walk barefooted on it! The next morning we woke up to live bugs (pincher type) in the bathroom. After we turned in the key ( yes, it's a real "old school" key!) I opened my purse to retrieve my lip gloss, and discovered another one of those bugs crawling I'm my purse! EWWWW! (My purse was on the tv stand all night). Never again!!! Rabbit is right on the money. This place is great if you want a clean, quiet and safe place to crash after backpacking, fishing....anything. Clean fresh rooms, though a bit dated but who cares, with a fridge, microwave, and lots of hot water with good pressure to get that Kings Range perma-dirt off your skin. The owner was awesome. We hit what I cold only describe as a small unmarked trench in the road coming out of Honeydew and actually smashed the wheel. The guy pointed out some great places that he thought would be able to help us (unfortunately it was spare tire city due to the unrepairable damage) and gave us some great dining tips for our growling bellies. If you stay here, grab a burger and shake at DJ's and stop by Tonetta's in the AM for a spectacular Mexican Mocha. read more

Bad news about this place...it stinks. I think this place must have been built back in the day and it's creepy, old and smells musty. Personally, I didn't feel safe here either. We booked this place for $80 while visiting the Avenue of the Giants and we didn't want to head too far up north. The reviews were decent too so we thought we would give it a try. Mistake. We should have checked the dates of the decent reviews, which are from 2006! From the moment we checked in, we realized we shouldn't have booked here. The office smells like cat urine and the office is really dark. We thought perhaps the rooms will be better. Wrong. Our room was musty and has burgundy sheets as if they were trying to hide stains. The beds are what I would call "taco bed" because they are so old and used you fold into the middle. The bathroom didn't have a curtains on the window and 2 of the lights were out, making the room even darker. Also, you can hear your neighbors and outside noise very well. I recommend skipping this place and heading north 20 min to Eureka where the hotels are cheaper and cleaner. There's nothing in this town either so food is up by Eureka anyway. I give 2 stars because the office manager was really nice (sorry but the place just was not up to par) read more

We had been traveling for almost a week and stayed in three motels along the way. Humboldt Gables Motels was secret tucked into this tiny little town. We experienced a plush bed with comfy pillow, extra large soft towels and a room that was SUPER clean. The grounds of the motel were well manicured and the parking lot was also clean. 100% would stay here if I was in the area again! read more

Tiny little motel nestled in between redwoods national park and humboldt state park. Showed up and waited 10 minutes for someone to help me. Room was tiny and clean, but not worth $81 a night and that was a special online rate too. The fridge didn't work in the room, but the shower was actually quite nice. read more

This place was horrible. Our family was on vacation to the Avenue of the Giants. We live 12 hours away but booked for 2 days. After driving 4 hours from San Francisco we just wanted to check in and relax. We were extremely disappointed to say the least. The windows were slatted. No so bad as long as they are all there. The attached room was missing a piece and had cardboard in the window. Additionally, all 4 of us had to sleep in one bed as the other bed had dirty sheets. We found dirt and LEAVES in the bed. And the sheets had stains. Not to mention the fact that we heard our neighbor using the restroom and then snore all night long. Needless to say, we left after only one night and couldn't wait to get out of there. Never seen anything like this before. Totally gross! read more

We found this to be the best bargain for the area! For a quiet nights sleep in the middle of the Redwoods, but without the inflated rates of those motels along the Avenue who would call themselves "quaint." The rooms weren't ultra modern, but they were clean, David the manager was extra kind, helpful and the price was perfect. It was so great to actually have a room key again!!!! Not a card......My 10 yr old gave it a big thumbs up! read more

I stayed there on Saturday May 19, 2014... Gentleman at the front desk was nice, talkative and informative offering suggestions of things to see, and the bath towels were in better than expected good shape but this is the only good thing I can say about this place. 1. The Motel doesn't look like the motel on their website! It does look like a Motel that should charge by the hour :-( 2. This should not be classed as a non-smoking Motel, the Blanket and Bed Spread both had cigarette burns in them. There were tables and chairs outside every window for smokers, thus the smoke came into my room. 3. Room was old, musty / mildew, not a place for someone with allergies or asthma 4. The Bed was rock hard. 5. No air condition or fans that I could find, it was over 80 in my room when I checked in and due to the smokers outside my room I could not open the front window. 6. With a AAA "discount" I paid over $100.00. Find yourself a Motel 6/Super 8 you'd be happy you did. I actually class this Motel as a NO STAR and WAY OVER PRICE, but with friendly service. read more

Excellent little motel for the money. Staff is friendly and welcomed us at 1 am with a u-haul truck. The bathroom was a little outdated but the bed are very comfortable and on a budget you can't beat it. We'll be back. read more

I simply happened upon this motel on a road trip down the coast. The bed was super comfortable, plenty of hot water, clean ... Front desk was helpful, friendly It's a motel in Humboldt County and I had a pleasant night there. I'd much rather give my tourist dollars to a local business rather than some corporate, generic, sterile hotel chain. read more

This place is fabulous! I've stayed here three times now, and once we had multiple rooms because we had a group. The motel looks like a throwback to the 50s, but the rooms are really nice, at least as nice as, and cheaper, than any motels I've stayed in in Eureka. I have family in Eureka so I've made plenty of trips and I'm so glad I stumbled on this place! Everything is clean and in good condition. (OK, one of our lamp shades was a bit ripped last time but we just turned it around!) The beds were very nice, firm and stable, the linens smelled clean, everything was very clean, and they even leave a Hershey Kiss on your pillow. There is a large grassy area for the kids to run around and there are BBQs if you want to grill something for dinner. A few cute little restaurants are walking distance or a short drive down the road. Other posters said the refrigerator didn't work & there was no air conditioner. The refrigerators are turned off to save energy; you just have to turn it on! We kept leftover pizza and salad, and a bottle of wine overnight. And in Humboldt County the weather is usually very mild so you don't usually need air conditioning; we actually had to use the heater last time & it was the first day of summer! I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke, and I have never noticed any lingering smoke in any of my rooms here. Yes, sometimes people smoke out front, but you get that at pretty much any motel. Ask nicely and they move. :-) read more

This motel makes an excellent base camp for a visit to Avenue of the Giants, Ferndale, Humboldt beaches, and more. It's a simple and clean place, without the prices you'd pay along the Avenue. The manager, Dave, is super friendly and onsite 24 hours - he's very knowledgeable with tons of recommendations for places to see during your stay. Good/fast wi-fi, and dogs are allowed with approval (e.g. if they're clean and quiet) which we really appreciated. We'll definitely be staying here again, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Just keep in mind that it's basic single level motel - no pool, room service, or stuff like that. Clean beds, plenty of hot water, parking in front of your room, and a store across the street. Like I said, a perfect base camp for your road trip explorations. read more

I had stayed at this motel about 10 years ago, and had a positive memory of my stay. This time, I had an unpleasant experience. Walking in, the room had a heavy musty, moldy odor even though the bathroom window had been left open. initially, I had asked the manager if he had a unit without next door tenants because I needed sleep and he said he couldn't offer that because they were full. I said that was fine, but for the 1st two hours of my stay, my neighbors sat outside my window in lawn chairs talking loudly, and the neighbors on the other side kept doing things with their truck.. starting, idling, alarm system horn went off when opening the doors. After a while, I decided I needed to move on. The manager not only did not offer a refund of my $95 which I paid in cash, but was unapologetic, and explained that the situation was normal for the place. He said that contract laborers came from out of town for work, and at the end of their day, liked to return to their rooms and let loose as a form of winding down. Bottom line, I have also stayed in motels a short distance away in Eureka, and they had the normal courtesy expectations from their guest so that all could relax and enjoy their stay. I advise that people drive a little further North to Eureka if they would like a more pleasant experience. read more

Man at front was very helpful, pointing out all the top sights. Nothing else positive to say about this place. We booked the night before on Expedia and payed well over $100. The motel was old, outdated and generally run down. Before turning in I noticed an ant on the bedside table, squashed it and went to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night and felt a strange sensation on my arms. Turned on the light, and both arms were crawling with ants. Traumatic as I can't shake the feeling! Stayed at the Best Western in Garberville the following night - much better experience. Plan ahead and steer clear of this place if you can. read more

My grandchild (8) commented no less than 11 times that this hotel was one of her favorite things about our vacation to the Ave. of the Giants. As much as the family found this amusing, we had to agree that it was an exceptionally clean hotel. Pleanty of hot water, the bathtub stopper actually worked, the area is quiet. The gentleman that runs it is amiable and helpful. I've never "yelped" before. But, I've spent too much money on "quality" hotels only to find them uncomfortable and noisy. read more

went in person to Office. said in front of two men there that we needed a room for TWO Nights. My husband asked if the price quoted was for BOTH nights. I said, No, no, that's for one night, right? given choice of 2 rooms. took the "better" one(they were both stinky from cigarette smoke) in spite of someone's backyard/swing set right behind the bathroom window. Next morning, the bigger man from the office unlocked our door with his key, started to barge in and said "You have to leave". I said we have the room for two nights, remember. he said no. I went to the door and told him to leave(at 59 in my nightgown, not a pretty sight, messed up hair, no shower yet). This big Fat Bully Stuck His Foot In The Door and Wouldn't Leave. I got scared and yelled at him to go! My husband had gone out and I was alone! I finally got the door locked. but not before the housekeeper threatened to call the police if I yelled again because her elderly parents LIVE THERE. cozy set up, huh? one towel per person. we had asked for another one earlier. They never brought it. NO Shampoo. cigarette burns in carpet. NO "no smoking" policy in ANY room. beware if you're allergic. they take dogs. They didn't offer to us to change rooms for 2nd. night even though the Vacancy sign was on! and it was Still on hours later when we went by!(we stayed in town for an event before leaving) Never apologized for THEIR mistake. They brag that they're The Gateway to The Redwoods. They are 3 hours away from the ones up on hwy 199 and an hour or more away from the ones in South. There are much better places right on The Avenue of the Giants, like Miranda Gardens. or stay at the Scotia Inn in the next little town(Scotia) or go to Eureka to Comfort Inn if traveling north. read more

This is place is disgusting. I have friends that were turned away simply because they hitch hiked with someone who was a grower and whose truck smelled like a skunk. The owner said "I know the difference between someone who smokes and is high and someone who has just been around it" I understand it is the owner has the right to refuse service but he refused service to 2 people who were, cold, tired and hungry. There was no shower where they were and just wanted to be warm. Shame on you owner. Anyone who supports the cannabis industry DO NOT STAY HERE !!! read more

My wife and I stayed here last month and did not have a good experience. The room itself was small, antiquated and could have been cleaner (bathroom).That's OK---to a point. However, beyond that the rooms have little insulation between them and there as a good deal of noise, loud talking, shouting and doors opening & closing all night. It was hard to sleep. To top it off, when we went to check-out early the next morning the manager (gross) came out of the back room in a T-shirt with holes in it, stain spots all over it what looked like half of his dinner on his shirt---a total slob. read more

this is a horribly overpriced dump. the room and bathroom finishes are beyond being cleanable, big stain in the carpet, everything is old. if we had another choice, we would have left. if you want ice, you have to go back into the closet-sized, urine-stinking office and ask the owner to go into some back room and fill your bucket for you. read more
