So I've been here a few times now and all experiences were the same as the first. The first two things I notice when I get in here is the dust above the kitchen area and how unkept one area is. It is over by the drinks and where you get the BBQ sauce from. On my first visit they were out of a few of their meats that we wanted to try. Fortunately I've been able to try a bit of everything on other visits. After much debate I can confidently give three stars. The service is prompt, and the food comes out relatively quickly. However, the BBQ is ok, the sides are ok, and the sauces are ok. Nothing has really stood out that makes me want to come back anymore. I will say that it is the better BBQ in the area though. The other spots are nowhere close. I just have much better options in SoCal. read more

The three sauces I tried were very distinct from each other. The Georgia was the spiciest followed by the mustard. The spicy Kansas was less spicy but had an amazing smokiness to it. Well here's my review for Humboldt Smokehouse bbq. Again I wanted to give a 5 star review but I just can't. I ordered the 3 meat plate with 2 sides. I ordered the sliced beef brisket, the slices were the average 1/4" thick but with brisket or ribs I always look for that reddish smoke ring but it really wasn't there. Plus there's that test. The bend and pull test. If the slice has a good bend and if it easily pulls apart it's a good way to know what that slice is not dry and is juicy. Second was the brisket burnt ends that is like the juiciest,tender, melts in yo mouf meat candy. But it was like jerky. The third was the pulled chicken. That was ok. The sides were baked beans and slaw. The baked beans also were ok. But the slaw really lacked flavor but at least they had some texture without being soggy. Hubby was wanting BBQ so he looked up this place... it was a lil hard to find only since we didn't know the area and was using google.. but it was really just us... its on 101 so you really can't miss it. Just look for "HSH" All the meat had great flavor, moist and was tender... I tried the Carolina sauce and the regular but honestly it was great without the sauce. They didn't have some of the items, like the pork belly or sweet potatoes, so I was bit bummed since I was really looking forward to that. Excellent food and service! Pulled pork was tender but needed more flavor so I added the Kansas City spicy bbq sauce and that made it so much better. Burnt ends were flavorful, some were dry but others were juicy. The linguisa was excellent on its own. The brisket was small but fall apart tender. Usually it can be chewy but this was great. We stopped here after visiting the very lovely Sequoia Zoo nearby. I was very much in the mood for bbq and wanted to try a local restaurant, so after some searching, we came across this place on Google. The building it's inside is very cute and historical, but once inside, it feels a lot less enthusiastic. I ordered the two meat combo with a side of Mac n cheese, whereas my husband ordered the Mac Daddy, a type of bbq & Mac n cheese burrito wrap. Once ordered, we were directed to get any sauces at their little condiments table. Above it was a chalk board describing each sauce, which is appreciated. I got each sauce so I could try them all. My pulled pork was a bit dry and overall not very flavorful. I didn't get much smokiness or anything from it, so it really just became a vehicle for bbq sauce; which is sad as smoked pork is my absolute favorite. The brisket was better! It was juicy and tender, with a very light smoke ring visible. Both I felt were complimented best by the Lexington vinegar-based sauce and the mustard sauce. Overall out of six sauces, I think the Lexington, Mustard, and Spicy Kentucky were the best ones. My husband did enjoy his Mac Daddy, but felt that the flavors just kinda melded into one, making it a little bland. He said that adding the mustard sauce definitely helped. We saw this place had good reviews so wanted to try it out! it's located downtown so it's mostly street parking! We went in around noon and it surprisingly wasn't busy at all. We ordered right away! But, a lot of the good stuff were sold out or they just didn't have it? Like beef, brisket, corn bread, etc. I was very disappointed so much were sold out. We just decided to get the sausages and pork belly with mac and cheese and beans and deviled eggs. When we got our food we were so shocked at how huge the portions were lol - it was like enough for a whole family of 5 ppl. Obviously we couldn't finish it all lol! Delicious food and reasonable prices! If you like meat, you should like Humboldt Smokehouse. I took my daughter here for lunch. I had a "1-meat" plate and she had a Humboldt Sandwich. We each had a side and I had a fountain drink. The whole thing (including tip) was under $40! Those working there are quite friendly and patient. It took a while for me to decide what to order as there are many great choices. There was plenty of seating indoors. There are six barbeque sauces on a counter with small cups to put them into. I saw that this was well rated BBQ place here in Eureka. Later on, we saw them advertised in a dog-friendly places procure. It looked like they used to have outdoor dining. But all the chairs and tables out front were pushed in a corner and chained up. Anyways we went in and put in a to-go order. We had our pup with us. I tried to confirm that the food would be ready in 20 minutes. All the guy said was alright. Like ok yes, come back and 20 and we will hopefully have your food ready. It was odd. Then when I got back, it was another staff member and she very nicely said they were packaging up our food and it would be a few minutes. That was fine - I was able to get some sauces. They had 4 different kinds so something for everything. Unfortunately they were out of a lot of things, when we went on a early afternoon on Saturday. No mac and cheese, no deviled eggs, no cornbread. That basically was everything we wanted. Haha. We ended up with two corn slaws, a sweet potato, and bbq beans. We also got 2 one-meat plates so we could get four different sides. We tried the brisket and pork belly for the meats. Overall I think it was just fine. Nothing too amazing and again we were disappointed with the availability of the sides. The corn slaw was probably the best one for me. I think the hubby liked the beans as it had bits of meat in it. For the meat, I preferred the pork belly over the (sliced) brisket. The pork belly was fatty and a bit crispy. The brisket was decent though -smoky and tender. The service: The guy that took our order was sooooo UNFRIENDLY, and the girl that served our food wasn't much better. The food: They didn't have ribs, so I got pulled pork and brisket with mac & cheese and cornbread. My husband got the mac & cheese bowl with chopped brisket, cornbread and the deviled eggs. The brisket was a little dry, the pulled pork was dry even though there was sauce in it. The mac & cheese tasted like old, boxed Velveeta Shells & Cheese that had been sitting for awhile, dry and clumpy. EVERYTHING that was served to us was room temperature. I've lived in Tennessee, West Virginia, and Texas and found the food at HSH to be as good as, if not better, than much of what I had while in the south. Good job guys! One of the best BBQ joints in the Humboldt bay area. Located on 5th Street, in downtown this smokehouse has been cranking out some might fine barbeque for a while now in this area and it shows in the quality and consistency over those years, voted best BBQ in the bay area for two years in a row. I opted to use Humboldt Smokehouse for a recent event and they did not disappoint. Sliced brisket, pulled pork, rack of ribs and hot link sausage all on point. The baked beans and vinegar cole slaw are both very good as well, if there was a weak spot? The mac & cheese was just okay but nothing special and kind of boring (needed salt, hot sauce, etc) compared to the slaw and beans. All of the smoked meats were pull apart tender and fall off the bone. Each was very good, the rack ribs however were a stand out and my personal favorite of the days offerings. These are just plain delicious and flavorfully smoked to near perfection. All in all, this smoke house lives up to its rep. We stopped to get my wife a coffee and while driving through the Starbucks drive through we could smell the smoked meats cooking next door at Humboldt Smokehouse. The smoker is in a shed in the back right next to the Starbucks menu board which I'm sure lures people in! We stepped inside and saw they did not have any tables inside due to COVID but they did have tables and chairs setup outside. We also saw some local recognition for best BBQ. We looked at the menu and decided on sandwiches. This does not appear to be a sit down restaurant, you order at the counter. My wife ordered the Smokie Joe, a brisket sandwich with cheddar cheese and choice of sauce. I ordered the Memphis, a pulled pork sandwich without slaw and choice of sauce. We also ordered two sides of mac and cheese with bacon. Our food arrived a short time later and looked yummy!  We both enjoyed our sandwiches but the mac and cheese was just okay. We were both glad we ordered it with bacon as it gave it more flavor. Bacon makes everything better! Overall it was a good experience and we would recommend stopping. BBQ and California never are mentioned in the same sentence but I am here to say after 18 months and 60k miles traveled BBQ and Humboldt Smokehouse in Eureka California go hand in hand . We were driving through the area and excited to try this place. When we arrived (at about 4:30), we were told they were out of half the meats and sides. In addition, the credit card system wasn't working, so we had to pay cash. When we got the order, the portion sizes were generous; however, the burn ends and pulled pork were so dry, we had to wash it down with water to swallow it. If this is the standard of service and quality, I doubt it will be in business very long. read more
