I used Humboldt to move from the Boston area to Vermont. They were pretty great. I got a binding quote from them when they came in and inspected all my stuff. It was super easy. Then when I decided to pack most of the stuff myself, the guy just came back and adjusted the price. The crew they sent was AWESOME. I don't know about you, but I can't stand watching other people work. I can't sit still. They were totally cool with me rearranging boxes and vacuuming and "helping." I had a 3 man crew to load up the stuff. They only packed up some dishes and electronics but they did a great job. Make sure to look through all that paper though - I accidentally threw away the tray to my microwave because I didn't notice it! There was a 2 man crew for unloading. They got everything up a crazy staircase to the 3rd floor and they were so nice. I unpacked as they worked and they even got rid of the empty boxes for me. The only problem I had was that the administration was kind of nutty. The crew had to be in two places on the morning of my pick up and so arrived an hour after my scheduled time range. I totally don't blame the crew. Then, there was a discrepancy between the time agreed to by the coordinator and the time the crew driver was planning to arrive. I was happy to coordinator directly with the crew. They're the ones hauling all the way to VT! In the end, I didn't pay any extra for the crazy stairs, or the fact that the truck couldn't pull all the way up to the building. It was a very reasonably priced move. All in all, I highly recommend them for out of state moves. (There are different rules for local moves and from what I've read, most people with problems moved locally.) read more

Look elsewhere, do yourself a favor. They moved my 86 year old father from one assisted living facility in Andover MA to another facility near Charleston, South Carolina. Sales guy was very thorough and friendly, but that's where their service ENDS! They assigned us a move coordinator, so you think that you are in good hands. A JOKE, and a bad one. This guy never returns calls. So he called me when they were packing up in Andover, MA (they were on time and good packers) and asked if the containers were there. I told him no, and he said he will look into why not and get back to me. He does not call back that day. I call him the next day and he apologizes for not getting back to me, and then tells me that the truck had broken down and they were loading the containers in the yard right now. He said he would check on it and call me back right away. He did not call me back at all. My dads furniture was to be delivered to South Carolina on Wednesday 8/20/14, 6 days after packing. Seemed OK, but was hoping for sooner. The move coordinator is supposed to call the day before scheduled delivery to provide a two hour delivery window. Did not hear from him, so called him late Tuesday 8/19/14 and he informed us that there was a delay and hopefully it would be their Friday, but most likely Monday. Furious to say the least as there are so many more details that it will take an hour to write. We had to call him? So, Thursday 8/21/14 at 4:30 PM we get a call that the furniture will be delivered Friday 8/22/14 morning between 8:30 and 10:30. 10:30 comes and nothing, so we call the move coordinator and he tells us its on its way. SURE? Around 11:30 he calls to ask us how it's going and we inform him that no one has showed up. He said he will get right back to us. SURE? Meanwhile we are stressing, called him a few times and into voice mail we go. Finally, about 2:00, they have shown up. They are unpacking now. Their company slogan is relax and get moving, and every email you receive from them tells you no stress, etc. As mentioned, save yourself the stress and look else where. They missed deliver by two days. They NEVER return phone calls, and overall the worst moving experience I have ever had. read more

We had an excellent experience with Humboldt. The moving crew was on time, courteous hardworking and helpful throughout the entire move. David in sales gave us good advice on how to be prepared for the movers and Bethany and Ellen in the office checked in to make sure everything was going well. Did we have any issues come up during the move? Of course we did. But you can't expect during a full household move that something unexpected won't occur. Jennifer, Probably a good idea, when responding to a negative review, to spell the person's name correctly. Frankly, there is nothing to discuss. After reading several more reviews it is easy to conclude that the reps are trained to provide ambiguous promises and when issues arise, fall back on this ambiguity. To say that all efforts are made to meet needed delivery windows as in our case, is further proof of the lack candor by Humboldt. While not told directly, we know that our needed date was ignored in that the mover's schedule was not even close to it when he was picked a month prior to do our job. Had you let us know about this we could have held off our move several days and avoided all the tumult we experienced. There is only one way to satisfy us at this point. A note of apology from Kelli M and Mr. Denis with an acknowledgment that neither were totally forthright as well as a modification of the terms you provide so that potential customers can make more informed decisions. Absent that, we will continue to utilize social media to share our frustration with Humboldt. I used this company's services on Feb. 8, 2017. They made a generally awful task as good as it can get. Their crew headed by Joshua was very easy to work with and pleasant. They worked quickly and efficiently but responded to any questions and concerns I had. My plow contractor had not come despite a conversation we had the night before of the necessity for the walkway to be shoveled and sanded. The Humboldt crew asked for ice melt and a shovel and made the walkway safer. They were conscientious in both houses of not tracking in snow or dirt. A dresser mirror was inadvertently not removed from the truck. When I noticed it missing several hours after the crew's departure, your company assured it would be addressed. This morning it was delivered and re-attached. While I hope to never to move again, I will recommend their moving services to any relative or friend who must move. They are more than deserving of rave reviews and offer superb and attentive service and reasonable rates. I was grateful a friend suggested I use Humboldt. read more

I used Humboldt (an agent of United Van Lines) for a recent move from Virginia to Boston and was very satisfied. From my initial contact with them through post-move followup, my Humboldt moving coordinator, who oversaw my entire move, was extremely courteous, professional, and easily accessible. Humboldt was the only moving company that gave me a quote that I felt was a price ceiling rather than a floor. Their Virginia affiliate (Hilldrup) sent someone to my apartment to do a full inspection and provide an estimate based on a visual survey. Humboldt then guaranteed that even if my belongings weighed more than the estimate, the price would not go up. In fact, my belongings weighed less than the initial estimate and Humboldt gave me a partial refund as a result. Other moving companies gave me over-the-phone estimates that were lower than Humboldt's, but these estimates were based on ridiculously low-ball estimates of the weight of my belongings, and unlike Humboldt, they provided no guarantee that the price would not go up once my belongings were on their truck. While Humboldt was not the lowest bidder, I was extremely happy with their service and felt I got what I paid for. The Hilldrup movers who picked up my already-packed belongings and who disassembled some of my furniture were extremely courteous and careful, even putting down drop-clothes to protect my floors. They did a full inventory of every item before packing it and explained to me the entire moving process. The Humboldt movers who unloaded my stuff in Boston were equally professional. They even delivered my furniture on schedule despite blizzard conditions and nearly a foot of snow on the ground, and they managed to do it without breaking or scratching a single item. The only snag in my move was that the movers were unable to fit my sofa into my new apartment. Even though this was not the movers' fault (the sofa was simply too big for the door), Humboldt handled the situation very professionally. They took the sofa back to their warehouse and even offered to store it temporarily free of charge until I was able to sell it. The bottom line is that I was very satisfied with the moving experience that Humboldt provided and I felt that their service was worth every penny. read more

Unfortunately, the container was delivered very late in the day, at 6:30pm, so I had to load the truck at and after sunset, and the driver threatened not to drop the container off because it was a tight fit! Very poor service on this end. Delivery at my new address was also bad, as the driver a) unnecessarily and rudely blocked in one of my neighbors for ten minutes, b) needlessly placed the container in two spots instead of one, and c) didn't position the container well overall. Their call center is great, but the on-the-ground experience was less than desirable. read more

I contacted Humboldt on a recommendation from a friend, and discovered that they offer the best service in Boston! Their insurance policy and prices were far better than their competitors for interstate hauls, and they really focus on customer service. As other people have noted, our belongings were delivered really quickly (2 days from Boston to NC) and in great condition. Whatever broke (in our case a printer) was immediately replaced with no hassle. My only issue was with our point of contact, who was unfortunately not as responsive as I needed him to be. When I spoke to his superior, however, all of my problems were resolved. Overall, Humboldt made my family's move as stress-free as a move can be! read more

This was the best move ever. We bought a new house without having sold the old house first. So we had to move from the old house with most of our belongings into the new house, leaving only a few pieces behind for staging. The job took two days in mid July and included crating of some antiques, disassembly and reassembly at destination. In both days the movers worked non stop for the whole day. Today we have completed the job, since the old house has sold. A crew of only three men completed the job in record 4 hours. Nothing was broken and the whole experience was really stress free. Because the nature of the job involved different skills depending on the stage of the move, Humboldt sent us three different crews. Day 1 in July was a small crew expert with packing, disassembly of furniture, etc. Day 2 it was a larger crew with a few younger, less experienced by incredibly strong movers. Today we had a small crew with a small truck, since the bulk of the move was done in July. I was impressed that the quality of the crew was remarkable in all three cases. This is important. There are movers which can send you a very good crew at the origin and an awful crew at destination. I was happy to see that them consistently do well regardless of whomever they were sending for the job. read more

I would give them a Zero. I wouldn't even trust them to move my Dog's house! They were hired to move us from Ma to AZ. The only good thing about the move is that we made it, but over half of our stuff was broken, improperly packed and a serious lack of care or respect for your property. It was so bad that they even broke my son's bike.They also lack intergrity. I had my load re-weighed when it got to AZ because they claimed my shipping weight was 8,000lbs more than expected when thwy inventoried my house 8 months ago. A couple of thousand I would understand. Actually shipping weight was 4,000lbs less than originally quoted 8 months ago. It was a nightmare from begining to end and would never use them again. read more

We ended up requiring to use Humboldt because of their tie-up with United Vanlines. My employer required us to use United Vanlines. I will never use either of these firms in future. Humboldt is easily the most irresponsible firm. I was moving from Boston to Missouri. After 15 days of picking up my stuff from Boston, Humboldt still had not been to put my stuff on a truck to Missouri. So, after 15 days of picking up my stuff in Boston, my stuff is still in Boston. The irony is that despite following up with both Humboldt and United several times in around 8-10 days after the pickup in Boston, nothing has happened - neither firm is able to give us any cause (forget about giving us a reasonable cause) for why this is the case. Humboldt has to be the most inefficient moving company in the country. I WOULD LIKE TO STRONGLY WARN ANYONE BEFORE CHOOSING TO WORK WITH EITHER UNITED OR HUMBOLDT (ESPECIALLY HUMBOLDT). Horrible company. They act nice up front like they will take of your furniture, and customer service available. After they are paid and move is done they could care less. Most of my furniture was damaged and one piece looked like it was dropped. The movers tried to carry heavy pieces by theirselves to get in and out as soon as possible. Customer service is nowhere to be found and now I have to deal with their claims department who could care less. Stay away from this company or Mayflower or United. They are all affiliated and bad!! I will never trust another moving company. They get paid for moving your furniture and could care less about the condition it gets delivered in! read more

I hired Humboldt to move me out of a house and store my items until I found a new home. I didn't know the length of time I would be without a home, so I found this to be the best option. I contacted a few companies, however I found the process with them to be really easy. The estimate was actually higher than what I was charged, I was expecting it to go the other way. I worked with Elizaire Dennis (sp?) during both my move out and then finally my move in. He was professional and accommodating and easy to get in contact with. The best part of my move was my movers, although the team was not entirely the same on both move , the foreman Bob was. They took great care of my stuff and everything arrived back the same way it left. I can't say enough positive things about my experience! I don't plan on moving anytime soon, but if I did I would call the, again and request to work with the same people I did in the last two rounds. . read more

I was hesitant due to some of the negative reviews on here, but after our initial meeting with David McDonald, we decided to go with them. Their quote for a move from Boston to Denver was more than reasonable. We were moving out of 2 separate apartments in Boston to one house in Denver. They kept in pretty good touch throughout the whole process, and delivered our stuff within their estimated range. Nothing was damaged or missing, which was a huge huge deal to me! I seriously don't have any complaints which is amazing considering moving always stinks. I definitely recommend Humboldt! read more

I got an on site estimate by this company and another company. Although the salesman was very nice when he came, the price was $400 more than a very reputable second local company. We used Humboldt for our move from the Boston area to the Midwest and had a great experience. Hal Reilly was our sales rep, and was so pleasant to deal with during the estimate/inventory process. Elizaire Denis was our coordinator, and also was so helpful and lovely. The Humboldt office team was responsive and patient when we had lots of questions. Humboldt packed some of our kitchen goods, and did a good job. The loading team was a little late, but once they arrived worked hard for many hours loading our household goods onto the truck. We are still in the process of unpacking, but so far have only had two damaged items (one was damaged during the unload which wasn't performed by Humboldt and one small glass storage bowl), and a few dings here and there. My husband and I had to relocate from Chicago to Boston for a job change. Our move was complicated because some of our belongings went to storage and some went into an apartment. Then, 14 months later, the stuff came OUT of storage and into our new home. (Oh, and in between, the first rental apartment we leased didn't work out and Humboldt moved us into a different one...with more items going into storage. It was nuts.) We also had a few items retrieved from storage in the interim. Basically, if it was complicated, we did it. The Humboldt team really did take the stress away. Their packers were lightning fast, labeled everything beautifully, and packed our items securely. In an entire semi-trailer of stuff, we had one broken juice glass. That's it. Artwork, mirrors, neon signs, bicycles, furniture, all arrived without a scratch. A couple of those metal bars inside wardrobes didn't fare quite so well and some clothes fell off and arrived pretty wrinkled. but that's not a big deal. The crews were polite, professional, and went above and beyond to be helpful and reassuring. After the tumult of the last 16 months, I'm ready to never move again. But if we do, I'm definitely calling these guys. read more

I didn't even give this company the chance to help me move. I spoke with a very nice-sounding salesperson and almost 3 weeks later I was still waiting for the quote he said would take a day or two. While he responded to my first email saying he would get me the quote "ASAP," he never responded to subsequent emails. Humboldt was the subcontractor assigned to us by United Van Lines. We were promised professional movers, safe handling of our furnishings and a stress-free move. Quite the opposite was true. Three students arrived to handle the move, one who worked for Humboldt two previous summers and two foreign students who had never worked as movers. The movers arrived without tools, and my husband and I had to unpack our tools to make them available. We had to supervise the young movers, creating quite a bit of stress and a lot of work for us. Instead of shipping our furnishings directly to our new home, the furnishings ended up thrown into a warehouse. Many items were lost and damaged. Almost every box was crushed upon arrival at our new home and furniture was broken. If your back is up against the wall and you have no other mover is available to you, make sure that you get full replacement insurance and be sure to carry precious collectibles with you. read more

An employee benefit program provided several moving companies and I reviewed them before choosing Humboldt. Both the service and the price from Humboldt were substantially better than the other options. Dave MacDonald came to my home to take an inventory and do an estimate. He was very thorough and answered all my questions. In fact he came back and did a second estimate because the home we purchased in Oregon was quite different than what we originally anticipated and caused a major adjustment in the items we moved. The driver, Mike, was also very thorough, detailing the condition of every piece of furniture and box. It was raining the day of loading, and the crew was careful to protect the floors throughout the house. They were super careful with our stuff, both taking it out of the house and loading the truck. On the receiving end, the crew was just as careful, and we had a very difficult house to move into - lots of stairs and corners. Nothing was lost or broken. avoid jacked us around. called and spoke to tom kennedy 4 weeks in advance of move spent 45 mins with him to do an inhome estimate. gave him our move dates and everything. we thought we were all set. promised to give us an estimate 3 days later. waited over a week with no response contacted him and he said the inventory transponder was not working and he would have something soon. finally got a quote and we tried to contact him back to confirm did not hear again for a week. he finally called back and said he was on vacation but now could no longer deliver our stuff on time and that we would have wait 3 weeks to receive stuff and pay a 5000 for storage fees. with all the time he wasted of ours now it is too late to get another company. read more
