At 8:11 am the morning of my schedule appointment I received a call from the office saying my time has changed to 2-5 pm. We just had our house tented and treated for termites by Hume. From the very beginning we were given great service. I did get another estimate but the were by far less expensive. Dan Hume came to our house a week before he tenting and provided me a thorough orientation of what we could expect and what we needed to do. He made us feel quite comfortable with the process, even giving us his cell number in the event anything went wrong. The process went smoothly, the team did a great job, ensuring minimal damage was done to our landscape. Great job. My only recommendation was the estimate for repairs was somewhat high. I had a change of heart with this termite co. Not only did the owner insist on pushing his political party association on me after I asked him to please leave politics out of business but he quoted termite repairs needed on 3 seperate homes where the second opinion termite company stated it was not needed to the degree Hume claimes. On one occasion they said I needed $500 repairs when the second opinion termite co said $0.00. Another occasion we did not know my seller's HOA had monthly termite treatment so when we called Hume to come inspect they claimed major repairs and treatment were needed. The HOA termite co said this was impossible because they treat it monthly and they confirmed there was no termites or damage. read more

Very good experience here; had my small (1,000 sq. ft.) duet home inspected and treated/wood replaced for termite infestation and dry rot. The inspector/salesman did have to make a second visit to inspect a portion of the attic that was inaccessible on the first visit, and to inspect a small exterior area that was missed on the first visit, but the inspection was quite thorough. Couple of add'l comments if you're considering this type of work: * Recommend that you get at least 2 or 3 bids (I had 3) so you can feel confident in the quality of inspection and of course the pricing. Hume's price was in the middle, close to lowest bidder; the 3rd quote (from Pestgon) was significantly higher. I will say, Pestgon's quote and inspection report (which cost $75) was by far the most thorough/detailed, they provided a complete breakdown of the cost of virtually every piece of wood that would be repaired/replaced - an impressive amount of detail was provided. But all three quotes basically called out the same issues and work to be performed. * My small home did not require tenting/fumigation; so all of my treatment was 'local' in nature. I did contract to have ALL the bare wood in my attic sprayed with termite protectant product. IMO after watching the technician perform this work in a matter of less than 45 minutes in my relatively small attic space I was feeling that the price I paid was steep; however, Hume's cost for this work was in line with the other companies' quotes. If you're a home DIY type and not averse to working in a less than desirable 'space' (i.e. the attic) this is something a homeowner could do themselves. * With the attic treatment mentioned above Hume does provide a 2 year warranty and will re-inspect the home every 6 months for a period of 2 years; if termites are found they'll remedy the situation. * Final note: Hume personnel preform the 'local treatment' of the wood; i.e. attic spray and injection of termite killer in exterior wood; wood that is replaced (the bulk of the cost for my job) is subcontracted out to a local licensed contractor. One could definitely save some money by taking Hume's inspection report and obtaining bids directly from firms that do wood replacement work. read more

Called for an inspection for termites and to determine whether to have house tented. They sent Kurt out, nice enough, inspected the house and said it needed to be tented and that we would we receive an estimate the next day. I explained that we needed the tenting done within the next two weeks. No estimate was received so I called after on the third day, they said it would be emailed later that day, it never arrived. I had already had one estimate prior to this and was waiting on this estimate to compare. Since multiple days had elapsed since the first estimate when I called to go with the first estimate the available dates were filled. I will never use or recommend this company to anyone that needs pest control. read more

Dan Hume has been doing this for decades and I have used him and Greg for my client's termite inspections. So many other companies do not do a complete job. I'm a realtor who deals with A LOT of termite companies. I see quotes for the same property ranging by more than $10,000. I've had quotes of over $21,000 on three story wood decks that end up being done for $8,000. I've always asked myself how they could possibly range by that much. Long story short is dishonesty... The termite industry, especially when homes are in escrow, has figured out they essentially have a blank check. One of my clients had hired Hume Termite to come do a home inspection. They charged us 20% of what other companies were quoting and gave us a warranty that was even longer than the other more expensive companies. But they did one other thing that blows me away... They sent out the owner of the company to speak with my buyers to make them feel more comfortable after the other termite companies had scared them with higher quotes. Once a buyer thinks they needs to get a house tented, it's almost impossible to get them to feel comfortable in not having it tented. The owner knew I had this issue so he decided to rework his schedule to come talk to my buyer's personally. Who does that!?! He explained the difference of termites and where they come from and how they can be prevented proactively. He was not only very knowledgeable, he was kind and gentle and soothed my buyers so much that they decided to use him on some of their other properties. We were given a quote from a Pest Control company we have used for years. The quote seemed high, so I decided to get a second opinion. We did some research and found that Hume was a local Oceanside Company. We called and got an immediate appointment for them to come out and look at the house. We were originally charged $85.00 from our Pest Control Company. Hume came out and did the inspection for free. They then provided us a quote for the work which was 1/4 of the original quote we had been given. The Technician who came out was very friendly and informative. Just had a client get a Hume bid for termite remediation that was $5,000 higher than other companies. If you are buying a home, I would strongly recommend that you hire Hume & Company to oversee the seller and his/her delivery of a termite clearance. Hume represented the buyer of the home I was selling, and they found a lot of termite damage and rot after it had already been cleared by my termite inspection company. If I had hired Hume to represent me when I was a buyer I would not be in a lawsuit with the seller for providing a sub-standard termite clearance. The Hume estimate from Gary was informative and provided a very reasonable approach to her concerns about termite damage. The other two companies put fear in her heart about damage that was not evident and treatment /repair that was unnecessary. One went so far as to falsify evidence of damage. Wow... I was in a real jam trying to clear my house for termites / escrow. Hume came through with amazing service and support and got me through this. There is a back story that has really opened my eyes to what goes on in this industry. I am shocked and amazed at what some of these nationally advertised companies try to get away with. Shoddy and incomplete inspections when they are on the hook for service and repairs. They issue overly aggressive reports and repair / treatment lists when they are on the selling side of things. I was under a dry-wood termite warranty contract with one national company, so when I sold the house, I contacted them for an escrow clearance. They had sold me the warranty after I ordered fumigation in 2011 and have come back annually to inspect. Each time giving me an all-clear. For this home sale, once again they cleared the house of any issues. Great!... but hold on... Next, the buyers did their inspections and found numerous issues related to past and possibly present termites, so they called in another nationally advertised termite company. That inspector found a list of issues and claimed that in addition... the house had beetles. That would have involved an expensive tenting and fumigation plus repairs. Rightly so, this spooked the buyers. One problem though, they neglected to include the fact that the house had recently been fumigated. A MAJOR understatement in support of their findings. That can't be legal? Of course, I have a warranty and annual inspections with the national company I was dealing with, so I called in a regional manager for another inspection. This time he found a number of issues, but no active termites damage or beetles. The buyers were not impressed nor did they now trust me or the company I was using. So insisted we treat per the inflated (expensive) report by their company. My agent recommended Dan Hume as a solid third party opinion. Dan personally inspected my home. He found no issue regarding beetles and actually suggested additional repair work, more than was suggested by the other national companies. This was at additional cost to me, but in the best interest of the home and the buyers. Dan helped to assure my home buyers that he could repair and treat the issues and that tenting was NOT required (remember I just had that done?) The whole fiasco with these nationally advertised termite companies almost cost me the home sale and then possibly the purchase of my new home. What is worse, they left me thinking my home was termite free for these past years. All the while causing further damage to my home each passing year. That is frightening! I close escrow in a few days and have yet to get a quote for repairs or treatment from the company that I was paying for protection these past few years. Very disappointing, to say the least. Hume is now moving forward quickly for me to repair and treat for escrow clearance on schedule. Hume has gone above and beyond for me and also has my buyers best interest in mind! The one star reflects the poor customer service received by Hume staff. We agreed to a two year contract for inspection/treatment and recently called to set up an appointment. After no one showed after the two hour window, a call was placed to Hume, and we were told that we "weren't on the books". This was after waiting 2 1/2 weeks for the appointment, leaving work early, and waiting for two hours. No real apology or solution offered by the woman answering the phone. A follow up email was sent about the lack of customer service and we received a general, dare I say, template, response. The email basically told us to call and set up another appointment for someone to "take a look", and then "schedule an appointment to have the property treated". Great, now we have to wait another 2 weeks for an initial appointment, and hope that someone shows up. Then, set up another appointment for treatment. I would not recommend a long term (2-year) contract as it appears Hume is only interested in making money, not assisting customers. read more

I don't get it. I had visible termites in my house and knew I needed to tent the place. I contacted Hume, Pestgon, and Victor at Killer Termite. Well, Victor was going on vacation and our communication got messed up and I had a small window for getting the job done ( an event out-of-town, the pets set up in a Pet Hotel, and a couple of neighbors to look in on the place, etc ). Well, I went with Hume because they had a great salesman, Mike Vaughan, and I had to make a decision to secure my spot. It turns out that the real tenting and fumigation is done by some other big company ( in this case, Beneficial ) and they sent some guys over. They were on time, tented the house in an hour and beat it out of there. There was somebody from the County checking the job and the lead guy seemed to know what he was doing, but he was over-loaded and rushing around handing me stuff I forgot to move out of the house, running hoses into the house and filling out forms for the County Clerk person. They were working short and rushing to get to the next job. When I returned a couple days later the water had been turned off as there was a broken water pipe. There were broken tiles on the roof and, of all things, the roof skylight vents had been left open the whole time and now I have millions of ants. Doesn't the poison kill the ants too? I feel this whole thing is just a scam. Mike Vaughan came right over and said it was fine - the open vents didn't matter, etc. and somebody called from the office about the tiles but never called back. I'll get my own plumber to fix the broken pipe as I don't trust them.....It's just a "bait and switch" game if they are not going to actually do the work themselves. They need to have more control over their sub-contractors. It would have been better if they had given me some info on prepping the house, moving all the food out and what to expect. The office was only concerned about getting the forms signed. Not a great experience. Hume is off my short list. read more
