Humpty Dumpty has become a favorite of Nevada County locals, visitors, and everybody who appreciates great diner cuisine. Humpty Dumpty Kitchen is located in Grass Valley, CA in a large, two-story building that almost looks like a house, as viewed from East Main Street. s you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a friendly staff member, seated, and given a menu, along with a glass of water. Daily specials are posted on white boards. Just past the cashier's station, you get a peek into the main dining room, and the counter, which definitely caters to locals. The dining room is spacious, attractive and decorated with lots of pine wood, which gives a rustic feel to the room. The restaurant has a small counter with six or so seats, and seemed to be a favorite of locals, who are regular customers. You can also get a peek into the kitchen through the window, and orders that are ready to deliver. The dining room has several television monitors that were tuned to a favorite Sacramento morning news-magazine program. I noticed a staircase, which leads up to a second story, which seems to be mostly used for special events. The inside of this fine diner is absolutely HUGE! The breakfast menu features classic diner cuisine, and has a selection for every taste. I noted the "Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs" at the top of the menu, and that fine selection sounded exactly what I was interested in on this Tuesday morning. From the top of the breakfast menu, I went with a diner classic, "Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs." Like most breakfast restaurants, you get a choice of how your eggs are cooked, a choice between homestyle or hash brown potatoes, and your choice of toast. The breakfast started out with a tender piece of beef, that was thin, seasoned, tender and juicy. The beef was coated in batter, and deep fried to a perfect, crispy, golden brown on the outside, but tender and juicy inside, just like the perfect chicken fried steak should be. The batter-to-meat ratio was just right. Adding to the goodness, the meat was covered with thick, rich, creamy sausage gravy, with chunks of sausage. My side of hash brown potatoes were fried to a crispy, golden brown on the outside, and white and tender inside. The hash browns were simply delicious! I ordered my eggs cooked sunnyside up, and they arrived perfectly fried, as ordered. I went with sourdough toast, which was toasted and buttered perfectly. No wonder this fine diner has achieved a loyal following among the locals! My breakfast was classic, "comfort food" which put a smile on my face and kept me satisfied until dinner. I enjoyed my breakfast and I enjoyed the "small town diner" atmosphere and charm that the restaurant is noted for. A great "locals" type restaurant close to downtown Grass Valley. Breakfast and lunch only so they close pretty early. Food is great including yummy desserts, like bread pudding and real ice cream. I've had the Ruben sandwich which is excellent and came with close slaw with raisins. Also recommend the berry salad, Teri chicken and all kinds of others. Did I mention burgers? They are great. The coffee and latte's are bland and tasteless. The other day was the final visit for me as I tried the drive thru. I was the only one in line but had to wait over 20 minutes for just a breakfast burrito and a latte. The burrito was horribly rolled and had no flavor. Super bland eggs with bland bell peppers and sausage/ham. The waitress couldn't even bring me my coffee while waiting. Come on do better Grass Valley!!! read more

Came here on a Saturday before 3pm and was seated right away. There were a good amount of guests dining with some open tables available. There is parking on the side of the building on flat land and in the front door entrance, the parking slopes downward. We ordered a cup of coffee which is not comp. The coffee was not given until we had mentioned it when our food order arrived. That was disappointing. Overall, service was ok. We also got the French Toast Combo which comes with your choice of meat either sausage or bacon, I got the bacon. You get 3 pieces of bacon which is nice. The French toast tasted great paired with the butter and syrup. The meal all together was good. We also got the New York Steak and Eggs with our choice of hash browns and wheat toast. Decided to have lunch here today instead of breakfast. The service was good, food was good (not great) and served quickly. The fish (fish and chips) was not hand battered on site but rather appeared to be previously frozen, deep fried, then served. The French Fries were good and served warm. The salad was cold and tasty. The quantity of the food was excellent, especially when priced as reasonably as it was. There are plexiglass dividers between the booths that were filthy to the point of being disgusting. Not only on the divider at the booth where I was sitting but on several dividers between booths. Eating food while looking at gross hand prints and smudges is not appetizing. I would suggest cleaning the dividers frequently, or better yet, removing them entirely. read more

I left a review here in the past and I need to change my rating. I previously left a 5 star review, but I have changed it to 2. I have been eating at Humpty"s almost weekly since the early 90's when I was in high school. I have always enjoyed their hamburgers and breakfasts. They were always consistent and the service was always excellent. As of late this has changed. The food quality has dropped and the last 2 weeks I have gotten sick from what I have been served. Despite the quality issues the service from the staff remains excellent. It saddens me that the new owners of this restaurant have made some changes that have affected the quality of the food they serve. My family and I will be making a different diner our regular spot in the future. read more

My husband and I were passing through town and wanted breakfast. We came across this restaurant and it looked busy but we were in no hurry. We got seated right away and our order was brought out fairly quickly than we expected. The staff was extremely welcoming and attentive. The fresh squeezed orange juice was amazing. My pancakes were fluffy and delicious, my eggs were perfect and the hashbrowns were crispy not burned and not greasy. It was a great surprise to find a place that was busy but still made a great breakfast!! I definitely would return and recommend you give it a try as well. You've seen places like this everywhere you go, a local sort of joint that is always buzzing around mid-morning, and can dish up really great fare for breakfast and lunch. Stopping in for a quick bite while on the road, this place hit that perfect spot when you just gotta have a hearty meal before the next leg of your travels. Going with the Corned Beef Hash, I found it very good, cooked just how I like it with lots of crispy edges, and topped with two runny eggs. I paired that with the eclectic choice of a helping of bread pudding, which was equally delightful and a great way to satisfy the sweet tooth. My companion went with the Humpty's Favorite, the go-to combo of pancakes, eggs, protein of your choice and potatoes in one of several forms, in this case in really delicious home fries. Prices for everything here was very reasonable, with most breakfast platters being around the $10 range. Current COVID restrictions do apply, and at least when we visited there was no indoor seating at all. Instead, the parking lot has quite a few canopies set up, with tables spaced out to provide adequate social distancing. And if you want to place orders to-go, then you can either call ahead, or use the drive-through window, which is a feature I have not seen in a sit-down establishment such as this. Additionally, the service here was quite friendly and prompt, and parking was pretty easy, though you may need to park nearby if the now halved lot is full of vehicles. We had an o great overnight stay in Grass Valley and wanted a local place to have breakfast. Yelp reviews took us to Humpty Dumpty! What a great diner! Ample parking, plenty if inside seating. They even have an upstairs for overflow dining. From the moment we entered, we were greeted with smiles and good mornings. The menu had a good variety of breakfast items. I had sausage and bacon. I preferred the sausage links which had great flavor and cooked well. I gave a dour star rated because it did take long time to get our food. We will definitely be back! read more
