We had an o great overnight stay in Grass Valley and wanted a local place to have breakfast. Yelp reviews took us to Humpty Dumpty! What a great diner! Ample parking, plenty if inside seating. They even have an upstairs for overflow dining. From the moment we entered, we were greeted with smiles and good mornings. The menu had a good variety of breakfast items. I had sausage and bacon. I preferred the sausage links which had great flavor and cooked well. I gave a dour star rated because it did take long time to get our food. We will definitely be back! read more

We've been going there for years and have always been happy. However, something has changed. The last two times we have gone there the meat portion has been less than marginal. I had sausage for breakfast that was near impossible to cut much less eat. The next time I had "ground sirloin" as part of my breakfast. Unfortunately, it was thin, tough and dry. Their prices have gone up and they are now charging extra for using a credit card. Somebody is missing the boat! Whoever manages the place and/or does the ordering/cooking is sacrificing quality for profit. Humpty Dumpty still has a lot of customers - - however I suspect that not maintaining their "food quality" will hurt them in the long run. For now, we'll go elsewhere. read more

Food was Excellent today! Served Hot! BUT the flies were terrible. I do NOT want to share my flood with Flies. The Waitress seemed to think there is nothing they can do about it! OF COURSE THERE IS! Most restaurants don't have near that problem!! AND it is VERY expensive. We enjoy a restaurant with food we like better at about $10 less!!!!! Did a to go order today, for $75+ and cash tip, was disappointed as two toast sides were missing in the 4 breakfast orders. The Humpty Scrambler pictured was lacking adequate portion. Very sad and not as good as it should be, even after adding salt and pepper. Given this is a busy restaurant, I'd expect more quality and taste, especially with a to go order. Finally found my gem in Grass Valley! From the extensive comfort food menu, to the very convenient drive-thru, there is a lot to like at Humpty's in Grass Valley located where East Main turns into Nevada City Highway in a typical diner setting....with the addition of an uncommon pick-up window service. We ordered three meals. An omelette, burger and pancakes. All exceeded expectations. Fries were very fresh, nicely sized, not overly greasy. Omelette portions generous with high quality. A side order of a home made cinnamon roll proved delicous and fresh. The hamburger, covered in chili and served open face, was also very fresh. A great place for a quick but substantial and filling....bite. Other observations: -Employees very accommodating and friendly. -Drive Thru is awesome, a great feature for pick up orders. -DT speaker could be clearer....could be due to everyone wearing masks -Parking lot is large but seemed fairly full -Pricing is overall excellent considering the portions and quality -A downside to the restaurant is that they close up early....with the drive thru closing around 4:30 pm. I placed a togo order over the Phone and spoke with the manager. I ordered a humpty dumpty fav and asked if i could substitute biscuits and gravy for the 2 pancakes. As listed online the price of a side of biscuits and gravy is 6.35 and a "short stack" of 2 pancakes is 7.95. The manager claimed a substitution could not be made but for 3 dollars extra he would include a half order of biscuits and gravy. I agreed to pay the 3 extra dollars for the half order to be added to my plate, which included 2 pancakes. Once i returned home i found there were no pancakes with my order. When i called back, the manager claimed he made the substitution i asked for and charged me extra for it. Unwilling to offer any compromise i now paid over 10 dollars for a HALF order of cold biscuits and gravy. Will not be returning as the manager was rude and unwilling to take accountability for the mistake he made in my order. Disappointing. read more

The restaurant was busy but amazingly, we got seated within 10 minutes. As soon as we got our table with our choice of drink and our waiter came to take our order. The menu is extensive, interesting. We ordered our favorite and became happy with our choice. The service is amazing, attentive, and fast. Highly recommend the New York steak with two eggs and the Humpty Dumpty breakfast. The pancakes tasted very good -- light and fluffy. Coffee is served hot, and surprisingly quite good. The food quality is fresh and with lots of tasty and flavorful ingredients on the plate. Portions are generous. Definitely, this place worth your money with great value. The restaurant is huge with two levels and great decor. The seating area is clean and comfortable in the diner setting. The bathroom is clean and functional with good lighting and a high quality hand dryer. This place is definitely amazing. Bad experience. First time back eating here since last year. I remember it was a greasy spoon but forgot just how greasy...let me explain. I was on a lunch date with my wife today. We live locally for the past 20 years and love supporting local businesses. That said, I will not be back to patron Humpty Dumpty and will ensure to spread the word...here's why: it wasn't because the fries were heavily saturated with oil, some people like that. It was because I ordered the BBQ beef sandwich expecting REAL pulled beef like any reputable restaurant would use. No, this time I received pressed lunch meat not tasting at all like beef and a smithering of what tasted like corn syrup sauce, barely, no not even close to passing as BBQ sauce. On top of that, I asked for my order to be returned (after a couple small tester bites) only to be told the manager would not allow it. We didn't even get a visit from the manager for any reason. It would have been nice at a minimum to have been acknowledged. And it was close to 3pm closing time so being busy would be no excuse. You would think a local establishment would put more effort into pleasing their customers or at least want to improve upon their quality of food. And I'm not even a food snob...I eat regularly at Taco Bell and Jimboys locally. So you can imagine if this BBQ sanwich was bad to me...it must have been over-the-top BAD! Humpty does have a great variety on the menu in a time of ever shrinking restaurant menus. That's a positive. However, variety means nothing if the food is so far sub-par you'd wish you stayed home with a TV dinner instead. If you want a great breakfast in GV, head over to Charlie's. From the second we pulled into the parking lot we knew that this was gonna be GREAT! 10:15 am, the parking lot was full. We enter and and a nice couple informed us that we needed to sign in. We did and 1 minute later seated upstairs. Coffee, juice and soda, delivered almost immediately. After looking at the menus we decided on two Humpty Dumpty's and an Eggs Benedict. I dove right in to my Humpty Dumpty special and it was delicious! Every time my coffee got to half a cup our waitress promptly filled my cup and checked in on us. Came here with my niece and aunt as my niece loves this place, she feels for the price, portion size and quality of the food it's a great breakfast spot. While we were being seated I walked by and took a little peek at all the different plates on the tables, everything looked pretty decent. Definitely standard diner food, Typical prices and portions, which is generally pretty good. When our server came to the table she was very friendly, she did a great job, I inquired about what was housemade and what was not, so keep in mind that your french fries, onion rings, pretty much everything is not made in house except for the potato salad she said. I got a Monterey burger which has cheese and avocado, bacon with a side of onion rings, beer battered. Everything was good, but definitely not impressive. They seem to be pretty popular, I found it to be sort of typical but maybe if I go back I will try something different. read more

This is the best place to eat! I have been there 5 times since I moved here on September 1. I am from the Bay Area and true foodie. Their Hollandaise sauce for the eggs Benedict is delicious. The only complaint and not really a complaint, I am just used to weak coffee. I drink Peets coffee and have most of my life so..... Are your hash browns on point and are the eggs accurately cooked to order. I used to love this restaurant, but something has gone very wrong here. The restaurant felt dirty, the service was mediocre, and the food was gross. I ordered a veggie Patty and fries. The Patty was barely warm and tasted as though it had been microwaved. The fries were not hot, and were obviously low quality frozen fries. The last bite I took, from the last meal I will ever eat there, was a moldy French fry. I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

My wife and I visited Humpty Dumpty Kitchen today, Wednesday, at about 10:40 am. Place was busy and had a waiting list... so we assumed it must be worth the wait! Had about 15 minute wait, then had a wonderful waitress, we got fresh squeeze orange juice and it was delicious. My wife had the biscuits and gravy with side of crispy bacon and I got the hamburger patty and eggs with hah browns. Food was perfect, and service was great! Today I was alone and waited 20 minutes for a booth, literally every one after me was immediately seated, the hostess told me to either sit at the counter or wait until the rush was over. Amazing customer service! I ordered the teriyaki chicken and opted for fruit instead of fries. I also had their bread pudding with raisins and no whipped cream. The chicken came drenched in teriyaki sauce and pineapple, and there were 2 chicken breasts so I saved one and took it to go. It was yummy and flavorful, I also enjoyed the small roll that came with the chicken-sourdough I believe. The bread pudding was hot and delicious-I enjoyed a cup of coffee with it. Total was $20. Walked in for breakfast last Saturday at 10am expecting to wait a long time, but the staff here moved quickly through the waitlist. We waited no more than ten minutes for a table of two and got our food pretty quickly too. I ordered the mini breakfast with bacon, which was simple and nothing special. My fiancé had the chicken fried steak and that was okay too. All of the food tasted fine but was not tasty enough to make me come back for more. The prices and portions are reasonable. I eat here every month or two. I've tried all the breakfast places in the GV/NC area and this is the only one I go back to. Waffles can be Belgian or thin, with pecans. (You have to go all the way to Ole's in Alameda to get a better waffle.) Coffee is from Caroline's. "Very well done" bacon comes out perfectly well done. Every time I've been here the service has been perfect, and if two or three different people are serving or checking on me, every one is great. read more
