I had a delicious veggie breakfast wrap that was made as vegan as possible for me. The server was really accommodating and made it work for me, even though it wasn't on the menu. The place itself is really homey and quaint. being from Texas, however, the place could stay in to have some central air conditioning in the summer because it was incredibly warm and stuffy in that restaurant. Good breakfast and great coffee. Had a super nice waitress this morning. We arrived at 7:00 am as they opened and had coffee while we waited for the cook to arrive as he was running a bit late. We didn't mind as we were relaxing while on vacation and the coffee was smooth and welcoming. Ambiance was nice and trendy. The only sad part to dampen this place was the cooks sour attitude. We welcomed him as he arrived with his cute young boy and he glared at us and refused to respond. We laughed at his very rude, boorishness. However, he had time later to sit with a few local friends and talk at a nearby table. Clearly he's an unhappy person and the owner should know how his poor behavior appears to customers. Not a good blend for a tourist town. We will always remember our stop here and refer to it as the "rude cranky cook". UPDATE: So after some research it appears that the sarcasm noted below is from the owner the "cranky cook" himself. His photo appears on their website as the owner. ‍ Rather than simply apologizing for the behavior or offering an explanation they instead chose sarcasm as well as a private, snarky message to me. My husband and I with our baby went for breakfast this morning. The place is very easy, but it works. You choose what you want to eat and the you order at the front desk. I ate the full size of pancakes (4 pieces) and my husband the French toast with eggs and bacon. Pancakes were really good, soft and not heavy. Also my husband enjoyed his plate. It was our first time, and we loved the place--it had a very local feel. The food was good, and there were a lot of choices. The service was terrific. They were very busy, but they kept us updated on how the food was coming. They constantly checked back with us, but not so much that it was annoying. The staff was very friendly and made us feel like they wanted us there and were happy to have us. It was a good feeling We were there on a Saturday morning, and so there was a wait for both getting a seat and getting the food. It was worth it, and let me ask--do you really want to go to a restaurant that nobody is eating at or one that has many people coming to? Great spot! This is a fantastic breakfast spot in Nevada City. Our group had the pancakes, eggs Benedict, French toast, and huevos rancheros. Everything was fresh and tasted great. They even have iced coffee including refills! The prices may be a bit high but I feel most breakfast places are now and it was on par with other spots in the area. It's an open kitchen style restaurant with a long and narrow dining room. It's cool that you can see the cooks making your food from a lot of the tables. The Place on South Pine was a very solid stop for breakfast. We hit it up before heading over to the Farmer's Market. Food - The food was pretty good. Potatoes needed a little salt, but the eggs, turkey sausage, and toast were all good. My fiance enjoyed her breakfast as well. Atmosphere - The atmosphere was good. Not a huge building, but set up to maximize guests and it doesn't feel too jam-packed. No complaints here. Service - Service was very good. The staff were friendly and quick. Kudos to the staff! Overall, I'd give it a solid 4/5 stars. Wasn't the best breakfast I've ever had, but definitely nowhere near the worst either. I'd definitely return if given the opportunity. read more

Whatever I see eggs Benedict on the menu at a breakfast restaurant I accept their challenge. The real question is do you know how to poach an egg properly and do you make your own hollandaise sauce? Well, I'm pleased to let you know that this place can do both. Not only that but the Canadian bacon was cooked perfectly and the muffin was fluffy and crisp at the same time. The staff was very attentive and the service was impeccable. I was served water and asked for a coffee and neither glass ever went empty. I observed all the staff in their element, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their work and coordinating together very well. Not the best interior, that's the first thing that comes to mind when I enter this restaurant. The service is awesome though, the workers are all so friendly and helpful when deciding what to order. I ended up getting a grilled cheese and a small order of pancakes. The pancakes were soufflé style, and super delicious. They took quite a while to bring us our check, probably because we were seated in the upper part of the restaurant and away from the main crowd. Sometimes a place does everything right to the point of being startling. The Place is such a restaurant. Our server was warm, attentive, and made great recommendations. The food was so outstanding I was upset my meal was done. We ordered the carnitas omelette and the huevos rancheros (super style) and coffee. I could probably eat that omelette every day for the rest of my life and not want for more! The overall vibe is diner-y, with plenty of space to spread out. Quick service, delicious diner off the Main Street. Perfect for the family. It's got diner vibes, not overcrowded like some of the places in the main strip. I got the Huevos Rancheros and it was filling and just the right meal for our day trip to Nevada City. I can expect a line at the door consistently. The venue is sparse and relaxing. Each (small) table has a lovely bouquet of fresh flower. The waitresses are as sweet and light as the Vermont Maple syrup that totally raises the bar to the unbelievable pillowy pancakes. I could choose the doneness of my sunny-side-ups. Formerly the Pine Street Cafe and closed for 11 months, The Place on South Pine is under new ownership. We were excited about seeing what they had done to the place. We weren't disappointed. They've brightened it up and added stunning wall art. The staff was energetic and attentive. The menu was simple. I had the special omelet with fruit instead of potatoes and whole wheat toast. The coffee was their own special blend from Caroline's Coffee Roasters in nearby Grass Valley. The whole wheat toast was especially good. Everything was delicious. They are open for breakfast and lunch. I'm definitely coming back here. We're so lucky in Nevada City to have wonderful cafes like this. read more

This little spot in Nevada City came with a lot of character! We got a small table for 2 and we're provided outstanding service! Our server, Josh, was all over the place taking care of the restaurant and guests! We ordered the brisket hash, breakfast burger, and an order of pancakes to share. The star of the it all was definitely the pancakes with REAL maple syrup! The brisket hash was made with slow cooked brisket shredded over breakfast potatoes. The shredded brisket took away from the flavor potential here. The potatoes really made this dish work. Palo Alto Pepper sauce brought it all together. The 1/3 lb breakfast burger with bacon, egg, and avocado oh a brioche bun with filling but dry without any sauce. Josh's Palo Alto aioli would be amazing to bring all the flavors together. The breakfast potatoes served with the burger were fresh but needed a little salt to carry the flavor forward. The pancakes... small but mighty! Thick and fluffy with a carmelized crust and dusted with powder sugar. Melted butter and that real maple syrup served on the side made these pancakes stand out! read more

Ate there for the first time Saturday with my girlfriend. We liked it so much we went back the very next day. Their pancakes are puffy clouds of goodness. The turkey sausage we chose as our protein was great. The scrambled eggs were moist and perfectly cooked. Too many restaurants over cook scrambled eggs ... until they're so dry they become uneatable. I was here for the Mardi Gras parade 2023 and they had a special menu. My girlfriend and I ordered the carnitas omelette and the bananas foster French toast. The omelette was phenomenal! Stuffed full of meat and packed with flavor. The omelette was the hit of breakfast. We were working our way to the French toast and we noticed a couple next to us ordered the same entree. Before we cut into it, one of the partners told us to try the candied pecan and nuts first to see how it tasted. I did and it was awful because they were stale to the point of being a bit bitter. Not to be deterred, we sat the nuts aside. I'm so glad that they were not sprinkled on the French toast and came on the side. Next, I started cutting the French toast to sample a bite and noticed that I was sawing...I shouldn't have to saw, so that means it was literally Texas toast without any custard or no soaking was done. The picture and presentation looked beautiful but the entree was not. We mentioned it to our server and we heard that others had complained as well. The couple sitting next to us spoke to someone in the front. Nothing was done for us even though we left the entree pretty much intact. Looking all over a for a place to have a regular sit down breakfast mid-week at 10:30am in Nevada City was proving to be difficult. Until we ventured down So. Pine Street and discovered "The Place on South Pine". We sat ourselves at the urging of the waitress who soon came over, offered coffee and left menus. We had an order of the French Toast and an order of 2 eggs with ham and potatoes, 2 coffees and a glass of fresh squeezed OJ. Everything was excellently prepared and service was spot on and attentive. In fact, the young lady, Angie, was so friendly that while talking to her we discovered she was from the same city in Argentina as a friend of ours! Just lovely! All in all, a very nice experience and we will make this our #1 go to for breakfast on our frequent trips to NC. This is certainly THE place to go on So. Pine! ;) read more
