Unfortunately, they don't make my favorite roll anymore. They used to have mini rolls, where half of the rolls had just avocado and half had just either tuna or salmon. When it wasn't pre-made, I would ask the sushi people if they could make them for me. They always said yes, but sometimes there was a wait. I also liked that the mini rolls were $2 cheaper and you get more rolls, even though they are mini. Now, someone new works there and when I asked if he could make the mini rolls, he didn't know what I meant. When I explained, he still was confused. This week when I went, I got the basic salmon and tuna roll. The rolls were heavy with rice. Received a spicy mayo drizzle upon request. Not as good as it used to be in my opinion! As Mexican would not consider Taco Bell to be Mexican food, Japanese would not consider Mermaid Sushi to be Japanese Sushi. Unfortunately, none of sushi places in Davis are authentic. Sushi rolls are Americanized everywhere but we've never seen this bad Nigiri anywhere. "Neta" (sliced fish) are not fresh and "Shari" (su-meshi or seasoned rice) is not seasoned properly. What is worse is how it is made; it is like a slice of fish on "rice ball". The rice should not be squeezed too tightly - it should contain appropriate amount of air pockets between rice grains. Sushi robots (e.g., Autec Nigiri Maker) would do much better job! read more

There is no good sushi in Davis besides Mermaid Sushi. Its not what you would find at normal sushi restaurants. Whenever i'm in the Co-op I usually always get one of Mermaid Sushi's "Brown rice with wild Salmon and Avocado", Its my favorite. It tastes extremely fresh and the salmon just melts in your mouth.
