Nasty tasting hot-and-sour soup going down the drain

I picked up an order of hot-and-sour soup for my boyfriend who is sick. He said it always helps make him feel better when he has this soup. Well, evidently I picked the wrong place because he let me know it is the nastiest shit he has ever tasted. So instead of chicken broth or anything else that would make you feel good that shit (the hot-and-sour soup) except two cans of oil would be worse! If we could give this negative stars we would. I feel bad for picking this place when all I was trying to do is help him get well, not sicker!

Shrimp in garlic sauce???? Really???? (I just don't think so!!)

Order is once again wrong!! I ordered shrimp in garlic sauce -- but got what I think is Shrimp with Lobster sauce or something -- i hate mushrooms and its full of mushrooms and 4 pcs of shrimp. Last time they messed up my order too! I like their food but can they get it together!!!!

New to Manassas. I ordered Triple Delight for take out, they charge a $1 extra for fried rice. I added sweet and sour soup and an order of crab rangoon. The Triple Delight...was very good, nice sized shrimp and tasty chicken and beef. The veggies were especially fresh. The sweet and sour soup was a sizable portion and very good. I was a little disappointed in the crab rangoon...just not all that flavorful. What...no fortune cookie? I left feeling very unlucky. Just not as good as my fav in Chantilly, China Cafe.

Unfortunately, the quality dropped off after my first couple of visits. The first thing I noticed was that there was very little meat in the entrees, especially noodle entrees. Paying about 10 dollars for a dinner entree that turns out to be mainly noodles is just not right! The last visit, I ordered a large hot and sour soup to go for 4.35. When I got home and served it, I found it to taste burnt! The worst hot and sour soup I have ever had. Inedible. It also had very old button mushroom mushrooms. No meat at all and just a couple of small pieces of fungus-probably wood ear. What a rip off. Threw it out. Another Chinese restaurant that I can no longer recommend. Even the fortune cookies were hard and stale.

    General Tso's Chicken. Wasn't crispy.

Ordered the Genneral Tso's Chicken. It tasted good. Combination Fried Rice was delicious. Had the dumplings. I've had better. Crab Ragoon tasted a little stale.

This was solid Chinese food. The Orange Chicken was very good, could amp up the spice a little however.

Pretty standard Chinese food place. I'll go back but it doesn't really knock my socks off.

The portions are incredibly generous, and every dish we tried was delicious. The drunken noodles were packed with flavor, the fried rice was perfectly cooked, the Tso's chicken was excellent, and the steamed fish was fresh and beautifully prepared. The highlight of the meal was the spectacular tableside Flambé dessert--it was both delicious and a fun experience. The service was exceptional. Our waitress was incredibly sweet, attentive, and made sure we were well taken care of throughout the meal. The owners were also warm and welcoming, adding to the wonderful dining experience. And don't skip the beer--it was fantastic! Great food, generous portions, outstanding hospitality, and excellent value. We'll definitely be back.

But what we did get was pretty darn good (if a bit pricey)! The style is much more authentic, so if you're looking for something like Hunan Cafe (Greenbriar), or that NOVA institution China King, this is different. Is it better? For the most part, yes. (But I still crave that Americanized sweet, spicy, glazey brown sauce that comes in slight variations in so many dishes). I had the hot and sour soup, Szechuan spicy fried eggplant sticks, Taiwanese rice noodles with fried tofu, and the Chengdu twice cooked pork. Everything was excellent, except....the hot and sour soup. Honestly, Hunan Cafe and China King beat the pants off this place's hot and sour soup. Here, it was a bit too sweet. It had some red chilies in it, but I could not detect much white pepper. And it's a vegetarian version, so no small bits of chicken or pork. I'd skip this the next time I order from here. But the other dishes... amazing! The noodles were light-tasting but still delicious. The eggplant was garnished with cilantro, garlic, salt, and red chili sauce. The twice cooked pork was sauteed with sliced leeks and the same red chili sauce. I think that's the fresh, zingy, spice flavor profile I like that can't be found at Americanized Chinese restaurants. Sure, China King has its place and I'll still go back there when I'm close (RIP China King Fair Lakes and Herndon). And admittedly, I go to that awful Panda chain occasionally because I never learn. The unfortunate thing is, I'll more likely go to these places than Cheng's because of the price. The pork dish was $21 and the noodle dish was $19. My total bill came to $60 before tax and tip. If I need to stuff my face with a Chinese umami bomb fast, I'm probably going to the other places for $15-30. I do want to try the rest of the menu at Cheng's, but it's going to be a drawn-out process for the sake of my wallet. I'd be remiss if I didn't include a comment from my dining partner. She compared the quality and taste of the food at Cheng's to Peter Chang's (either Peter Chang's-Herndon, or Mama Chang Fairfax). A high compliment. But she said the value is better at those places' AYCE options than what we got at Cheng's, and I agree. If you've been to none of these places, you have to try them all at least once.

Friends recommended Lin's and I'm pleased to say this may be our go to! We ordered online and picked it up on a Sunday evening and there were several folks dining in at the time which is great to see. The inside was very clean with all the sauces and utensils/chopsticks available to grab when you pick up the order. They had a hot sauce which we liked. We ordered general Tsos, hunan chicken, Taiwan rice noodles and vegetable rolls. Both the general tsos and hunan came with small containers of white rice. The veggie rolls were just spring rolls with cabbage but the shell was crispy and the cabbage still held up.. no mushy insides. The general tsos chicken was all white meat and good texture, but a bit lacking in spice. When we order again we will ask for more spice. Similarly the hunan chicken had a pepper next to it on the menu but had very little spice, but was redeemed by the number of fresh veggies. The squash in it was amazing! The noodles were not greasy, had good flavor and came with a good amount of chicken, beef and shrimp. The lack of grease and oil was very refreshing and will definitely have us ordering again! Someone dining in had a mountain of fried rice that looked and smelled amazing so will be trying that next.
