We used to go to Hunan Cafe often pre-covid but stopped when the quality dropped. We went again on a Friday night to see if it was better after the renovations. We were pleasantly surprised at the food, portions, service and spaciousness of the new design! Our girls loved the chicken rice noodle soup (incredibly flavorful broth), tripe with bamboo shoots, spicy pig trotter, and spicy cauliflower. Everything was delicious, not too salty with good sized portions so we had a lot doggy bagged. My husband dropped a chopstick and one of the staff quickly ran over to give him a new pair without asking. They also had ikea utensils for kids which was a nice touch. Slightly off the main drag of Flushing, I recommend this spot for their Hunan delicacies. I've been looking for legit Hunan food, as its hard to find, and came across this place and gave it a go. You can look up Hunan food in general, but its known for its heat and dishes like stinky tofu. I dined in and got the White Pepper and Cured Beef $18.95 Small Fried Stinky Tofu $12.95 I thought both dishes were great. I did ask for the beef to be extra hot and they seemingly complied. The heat going in wasn't any hotter than anything I've eaten before, but the after effects of the spiciness were stronger for sure, lol. I wasn't really sure if I should have gotten the stinky tofu, as I don't like durian and wasn't sure if it was the same stinkiness, but it actually wasn't that bad. Yes it has a mild smell, but definitely not pungent and (imho gross) like durian. I will note that the bathroom there leaves a little bit to be desired, so definitely try not to need that if you're gonna go here. Delicious cumin lamb, green chilli pepper beef, and beef tripe cold appetizer. Great portions at good prices. Service is also very good. But we liked the above so much that one day we strayed. Got their house signature chicken dish and a seafood lo mein and soup dumplings. The most over priced diced boney spicy chicken - tiny pieces of boney chicken. We hated it. Seafood lo mein had almost no seafood and tasted worse than takeout Chinese. As if they cooked it and washed it in oil or water, totally soggy. It was so bad that my uber old mom who I have NEVER in my life witness complain at any restaurant pulled over the waiter to complain about the noodles. And the soup dumplings. Oh god, why did we even do that when there are so many great soup dumplings places in flushing? My fault I guess. Ok so, still worth a try and we will likely return but only for a few dishes. It could be better, but given there are only 2 decent Human-Shichuan restaurants left in Flushing, I need to give it a rating of 5 to show support. It is still the best Human restaurant in Flushing. If you want something authentic, you need to tell them that you are OK with spicy food. The other good Shichuan restaurant in Flushing is Daxi. They have cooks from China and the food is more like authentic Chinese food. This one could not resist the temptation to westernize. Still very good, though. read more

I came here for my bday few days ago. They actually just renovated. Its a lot nicer now and has few private rooms. which is nice for family or private dinner parties. My gf and I love this restaurant for Chinese food. Pre-vid we always came here after our massages. When the massage placed closed, we still continued to come. Authentic, tasty, spicy, and even zagat rated. We always order the lamb with cumin... The dessert which is some concoction with sweet balls is fantastic... I usually come for an early dinner, say 530-6 on sunday and the service is impeccable. Come early and you will not be disappointed. I'm looking forward to making our way back soon. read more

And great for bumping into friends you haven't seen in years =P We were a party of 3, but coincidentally, our table was right next to an old friend and his acquaintance. The staff were so nice to accommodate us on Christmas Eve and found a bigger round table to seat all of us (and move their food to the new table since they've started eating already). 1. Mao's Braised Pork - delicious and juicy. For anyone that loves fat and not afraid of chunky bacon. 2. Mapo Tofu - I think this was the best mapo tofu I ever ate. The tofu is silky and smooth, wrapped in a thin layer of tofu skin to keep the tofu intact (formed when fried?). 3. Pumpkin Cakes - it tasted better last time. This one was a bit soggy. Too much water content before frying. 4. Fish Filet - Fresh, smooth, delicate, and no bones! A bit spicy too. 5. Water Spinach - it taste good. This place is awesome. This is one of my go-to places in Flushing. I can't believe that I haven't reviewed it yet. It is located on Northern Blvd, a bit outside of the main downtown area of Flushing, as such, we never have to wait long for a table. The restaurant may not look much on the outside, the interior is quite different. The decor is understated for Chinese restaurant standards and well maintained. The staff is friendly (again, for Chinese restaurant standards), helpful and responsive. Most importantly, the food is consistently good, I have not been disappointed by a dish here yet. Hunan cuisine is known for its spicy flavor, however, we tried a few non-spicy dishes here, and they did not disappoint. Some of my favorite dishes here are: Spicy Beef Tendon & Ox Tongue and Tripe with Spicy Peppery Sauce - not for the faint of heart. These dishes are definitely spicy and the ingredients could be a bit strange for those not familiar with Chinese cuisine. These two are the quintessential southern Chinese appetizers, they are great with beer or rice. Cucumber Salad - a good dish to help cut the spiciness of the other dishes. The cucumber salad here is well made with the perfect amount of crunchiness and sourness. Beef with Spicy Green Pepper - one of my go-to dishes. I love the tenderness and robust flavor of the beef. I have to admit that I usually pick out the peppers because I am too chicken to eat them. However, I love how the peppers give the beef the perfect amount of spiciness. Water Spinach Root - Definitely order this dish if you see it on the menu. They take the leaves out of water spinach, leaving only the roots and chop them up into tiny pieces. It is the perfect dish to pair with fatty meat, mapo tofu or just rice. I have tried to replicate this dish at home and it is a lot of prep work. If you only get one vegetable, get this one. String Beans - a seemingly simple dish, but well executed. The outside of the string beans are crunchy, while the inside is soft. Some places drench the string beans in oil in order to sear the outside, but that's not the case here. Lamb with Cumin Flavor - another go-to dish. I've always try to order the lamb if I see it on the menu. The lamb is well seasoned but not over-powered by the cumin. Overall, most of the dishes here are pretty good, if you are in doubt, just ask the servers, they will help guide you through the menu. They definitely cater to a more Chinese crowd, as such, the kitchen is not shy with the spices, so be prepared!! read more

Thank you Michelin guide for leading me to the best chinese restaurant I've ever been to in NYC, and certainly the most authentic hunan food I've had outside of China. If you come here be prepared to endure some spice, because this stuff will definitely make you sweat. Not wanting to try the basic stuff like Mapo Tofu, we branched out and had: - Tofu in chili sauce (including an insane amount of minced garlic) - Lamb with cumin, cooked with peppers and cilantro (wow!) - Shrimp in Hunan sauce - Water spinach sauteed with fermented tofu Everything was awesome, and in city where you have to struggle to find spicy chinese and thai food, the spice was very welcomed. After going only to szchuan and northern Chinese in Flushing we decided to spread out to Hunan and Cantonese. This foray was Hunan and Hunan House was a great pick. Right off Main St on Northern Blvd this place was the bomb! Not only very nice looking but very hospitable and comfortable. Starting with apps, we had Soup Dumplings and Dan Dan Noodles. Enjoyed having food that taste good first and hot second. Requested hot oil and to my surprise they offered us a homemade version with roasted hot peppers with a great flavor and then a hot kick on the backend! Great ...the braised sliced fish and cumin lamb were again not what we were used to but fantastic in their own Hunan right. Fr dessert we had great pumpkin patties...really delicious! If Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemon, and Tony Curtis were still around, I have a feeling they'd be into this place. Or would they? Like the above trio, you see, we like it hot. We even pride ourselves on having weaned our kid on hot sauce over the years, starting with Frank's, and working our way up to "blow your ears off" Dot's Fire in a Bottle from Barbados. But I think we may have met our match with Hunan cuisine: We ordered Water Spinach Root, Cumin Lamb, and Beef with Crispy Peppers. The latter, which featured lots of tender pieces of beef, was my favorite. The Cumin Lamb was good too, but contained way too much sliced onion v. meat. Didn't love the former, which amounted to a big pile of sauteed thinly sliced roots. It was definitely interesting to try but would have worked better as a smaller, less expensive side. I believe it was $12.95 and there was just too much of it. Now, here's the thing. All three dishes were crazy hot. Even the accompanying rice didn't help. So our meal tasted off-balance. Not sure if the Hunanese have an equivalent of cooling Indian yogurt raita, but something like that sure would've come in handy. Appreciated the personable, efficient service and pleasant-by-Flushing-standards ambiance. Since this spot is located on the outskirts of the main downtown drag, parking was also not impossible. After eating here, I became curious about Hunan cooking and came across this Chinese joke that I am totally paraphrasing: Sichuanese aren't afraid of food that's hot... But the Hunanese are afraid of food that isn't hot. DO NOT COME TO THIS PLACE.! We booked a table for 5 on Father's Day. When we arrived there (and we were on time), the staff said he accidentally gave our table to someone else. Then he took us upstairs to a room where over 20 people were celebrating someone's birthday. The kids were yelling and the people were talking very loud. I don't blame them because they were celebrating and they had the room all to themselves before we came in. But obviously, we can't have a dinner there. My father-in-law can't even hear us talking because of the noise. When we try to see if we can change a table, the staff said he can't do anything because our table was already given to someone else and he couldn't take it back. He then became very rude and impatient. There were still other tables available but he won't let us sit there. We waited downstairs for another 10 minutes, no one came to us as if we do not exist. This is what good/authentic Chinese food tastes like. No, seriously. The flavor of the food is about as legit as it gets. Note that dishes here tend to be on the spicy side - but at a recent dinner party I had the fortune of sampling a wide variety of their dishes. The spicy beef was absolutely excellent. The full spicy flavor of the sauce was cooked into the meat and the texture was ridiculously tender. Another outstanding dish was the egg custard which was also tender and succulent with the ground meat trimmings. The hot chili fish was also excellent, well prepared the the meat was also very tender. The service here was good and I also liked the tasteful decor of the restaurant. There's a certain level of professionalism and discipline here with the entire experience that is often lacking in many other Chinese restaurants in town. To find a place that serves tasty and authentic food in a decent setting is truly rare in Flushing (and elsewhere). I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a good Chinese place that doesn't feel like a hole in the wall full of rude ass waiters. read more

I'm no expert on Hunan cuisine, but I do love me some spicy food and Hunan House definitely delivers on spicy. From what I've noticed, Hunan cuisine differs from Sichuan cuisine in that their dishes don't require Chinese peppercorns and thus are not ma la (numbing spicy). Instead they seem to rely more on chili oil, chili peppers, and garlic to pack their punch. While Sichuan spicy creeps up on you, Hunan spicy hits you right away. So far I've visited twice and I've liked or loved all the dishes we ordered. Everything has been executed perfectly and there hasn't been one single dud. My absolute faves were the spicy sliced tendons (perfect flavor/texture and coated with just enough chili oil), spicy intestine casserole (so pungently spicy!), and the spicy lotus roots (great crunch, very spicy with no oil). Though the lotus roots were my favorite veggie, the spicy potato strips come in at a close second; these flavors/textures definitely overlap though so I'd recommend just picking one. Their rendition of sliced fish in chili oil is quite good, though perhaps a little stingy on the fish. And the spicy and crispy whole fish (from the daily specials menu) was also on the small side, but delivered in flavor. If you need a couple of non-spicy options, I recommend the braised pork belly which was perfectly tender, the cumin lamb which isn't completely non-spicy but it was very mildly spicy, and the fried green beans. All of the soups are non-spicy as well; both the house special soup and the seaweed spare rib soup I tried were solid. The menu is picture heavy and really easy to navigate, and don't forget to check out what's on their daily specials menu. The portions here are meant to be shared family style, so I highly recommend going in a group of 4 or more so you can try a good variety of dishes. The only reason why they get 4 stars and not 5 is because their service can be a bit spotty. It's not terrible but it's far from good, and for a restaurant whose decor suggests that they're aiming for a better-than-just-your-neighborhood-Chinese-restaurant experience, they could really do with some better training for their waitstaff. read more

I ate here with my leadership dev't team this past week. Yes there were probably more than 30 people, but it should not have taken over 45 minutes for the food to come out. This is not an exaggeration. As a pescatarian, I was not impressed by the food choices. Although we ate "family-style" and rotated the spinning table top, I was only able to taste a few veg options and the spicy shrimp that I ordered. The veg spicy cauliflower was decent. The veg eggplant dish was nasty. The stir-fried prawns with hot spicy sauce were neither stir-fried nor spicy. Instead, prawns with shells were doused in oil and a ton of red chillis. By the time you got the meat out of the shells, the flavor was bland. Plus, the chillis were not sauteed or anything... there were just about 20 chili peppers cut in half and scattered on that plate. If you're looking for authentic Hunan cuisine, this place is the one. Hunan House serves a great variety of classic Hunan dishes and it is all so delicious. I came in here for dinner with my parents and we ordered four dishes; left here feeling happy and full. 1. Sauteed eggplant and Chinese string bean: originally, we just wanted something that wasn't spicy to balance our meal but this dish did that and more. The flavors worked together so well. It's a bit oily, but what do you expect for Chinese food? For some people, it might be on the salty side, but to those people, I say, that's what the rice is for! If you love eggplant, you should order this. If you're indifferent about eggplant, this dish will turn you into a lover. It's good stuff yo. 2. Spicy lamb pieces: this was surprisingly good. I usually don't eat lamb, but I really enjoyed this dish. It was a bit chewy, but the flavors of the dish were awesome. It wasn't too gamey and it was just the right amount of spice. Again, it goes really well with rice. 3. Spicy hunan style fish slices: This was my favorite dish. I usually don't eat fish when I go out (cooked fish.. yeah, I'm weird) because I don't like that fishy taste (I think it's because of some tragic event that involved cooked fish during my childhood?), but this dish was amazing. It was spicy, cooked well, flavorful and delicious. I shoveled that spicy fish into my mouth despite the scorching, sweltering heat outside. Thank gosh for air conditioning. The fourth dish was a chicken dish that I don't really remember much about, but other than that, the meal was great and I would definitely come back to eat more fish, eggplant and lamb. I was coming from a massage session at the Sun Spa (great massage) only a few doors down and was super hungry as I'd not eaten all day. I asked the receptionist where I could find really good Hunan Style food. She recommended this place. So I looked for it on my trusty YELP! and sure enough it was there with a 4 star rating. When you look at it from outside it looks like nothing special but when you go inside its nice. Seems like a family style restaurant. Zagats gave it a B rating and I would agree not quite an A status. The staff was polite enough. They offered me a fork which I promptly refused because I've been eating with chopsticks since I was 13yrs old!!! Now I'm 50 and still eat with chopsticks!! Anyway, I ordered the slightly fried Spinach w Garlic, Rice and Crispy Duck. So much food!! No way I could eat it all!! I had to take the rest home!!! I wasn't a fan of the brown sauce that came with the dish though...ugh! So, I had them bring me the spicy chili sauce, which to me was not that spicy (I'm Caribbean so I'm used to REAL SPICED food...JERK IT!! Oops wrong culture, lol). Very tasty food though. Wherever you go in New York City or the rest of the country, you will see many restaurants with "Hunan" in the name, but soon discover that the namesake province has little to do with the fare actually offered inside. A search for "Hunan" on Yelp.com for the city brings up 160 results, but it might be only Hunan House in Flushing that has a real sophisticated Hunan menu. Skipping the first couple pages of the menu, we browsed the "house specialties" portion, which the waiter assured me was all Hunan fare. Our first selection, the shredded beef with spicy green pepper ($10.95) is a simple but effective dish doing exactly what it promotes. Hunan food is well known for its spiciness, but is more subtle than Sichuanese and does not explode in your mouth the same way. Seeing as how Hunan was the birthplace of Chairman Mao, the dish called braised pork, Mao's style ($10.95) immediately attracted me, and ended up being our favorite dish of the meal. The fatty and meaty combination on each piece reminded me a great deal of Colombian chicharron, but this was not deep fried so you could savor each fatty bite. The dish also included some soggy chestnuts and was all over a bed of fresh spinach. Both oily and salty, it kept us picking at our rice, which seemed to be a quality of all the food this day. The last item in the house specials sounded very interesting, the sauteed pork green pepper with poached eggs ($8.95). Interestingly though, it was a vegetarian dish and the egg was fried. A Chinese reader amongst us commented that "pork" was nowhere in the Chinese name, which explained half of it at least. The egg was a bit boring in the end though, and the peppers were the only real taste popping through. In general, I was expecting a more liberal use of peppers, but was not so disappointed as my nose was running, especially from the egg dish. Oh Chinese cuisine has always been a weakness of this guy. A country so large and vast tend to have many complex styles and traditions within their food. These styles and traditions has been passed down from generation to generation and have travel all over the world. New York has always a very popular stop of many different types of Chinese food. The hunan dishes tend to have whole dried chili peppers and long marinated meats and stews. Hopefully this hungry ferret won't past out from the heat stroke. The place had a nice interior. It was very clean and not tacky. There was plenty of space between the tables in the restaurant. They gave us a free starter of various pickled vegetables. It was a different and welcome change of the typical peanuts. Soup Dumplings was ok, it was not special especially since there are many other place with much better soup dumplings in the area. They had a strange sweetness to them. Aren't these things suppose to be savory? Lamb with cumin was good here. The lamb had good flavor with a light touch of smokiness. It had a similar taste to the street vendor BBQ carts within the Flushing area. The lamb was cut into thin strips, some pieces have a gristle chewiness to them. To warn /encourage you, there is a lot of hot peppers in this dish. I would have to say that 1/6 of the dish consisted of hot peppers. Mao pao tofu here was a vegetarian kind. There was no meat in the dish, which is ok. The problem with the dish though is just only had one note. There were no layers of flavor that many other places have. Chicken Casserole dish was not enjoyable for me. The problem with this dish was that it was hard to eat and overly spicy for the contents in the dish. The chicken that they used was mostly dark meat with bones. The problem with the bones was they chopped up the chicken jagged edges. There were also lots of loose bones in the dish with jagged edges. There also wasn't much meat in the dish. Many other yelpers gave it such high reviews, am I just picking the wrong dishes? or the chef leave or something? give me some insight! read more
