Dumplings - they have all kinds, pork and sour pickled cabbage is one of my favorites but pick your own, can't go wrong here. There aren't many Northern/Northeastern Chinese restaurants around, and since my family is from that region I was excited to see that spot! I came on a Thursday evening and there were several groups of local Chinese folks (a good sign) but enough empty tables that my small group was seated right away. There was complimentary hot tea and small appetizers of pickled cabbage and shredded potato which were appreciated. We ordered several dishes to share family-style. I recommend the di san xian (amazing eggplant and sauce), the stir-fried lamb with scallions (not gamey at all), and the sweet and sour "squirrel" fish. I was especially impressed by the latter - I haven't found a rendition of squirrel fish that matched what I had in China until now, perfectly filleted and boneless and crispy. Everything was very reasonably priced for the large portion size and the yumminess! Service is what you'd expect from an old-school Chinese spot: dishes come out intermittently whenever they're ready, you sometimes have to flag down a waiter or get up to find one, and I didn't love the whiff of cigarette smoke I caught when walking by one of the private rooms. We came here for a big take-out meal. This place is a little bit different than the other restaurants we have ordered in the past. This is a restaurant that specializes in the Northeast part of China dishes. Food tastes pretty authentic to me and the price is reasonable. We ordered about 7 or 8 dishes for the 6 of us. We had dumplings, eggplants, some beef, and string beans. I am not an eggplant fan, but I actually like this dish. The dumplings were great. The beef was nice and tender. I am big on hygiene and cleanliness. And this is a place where those things do NOT exist, unfortunately. My son didn't even want to wash his hands as the toilet was dirty and sink was filthy. We did a large takeout order, and with my broken mando, I was able to convey what I wanted, and they were able to take my order in a prompt manner. Portions are pretty big, and prices are decent. The food was actually surprisingly decent. It wasn't overly spicy and has just the right amount of heat. We ordered a variety of dishes from apps to entrees. This restaurant specializes in Northeast Chinese cuisine, and the dishes we ordered all hit the spot for my family, who are all from that area of China. The chefs are both from that region as well, according to our server, and we can taste it in the authenticity of these dishes. The prices are pretty standard for restaurants in Flushing but the portions are fairly decent. I particularly removed the squid dish, and the fried pork as well. Even the fried fish and the dried tofu, which I don't usually love, were really good. The staff were accommodating to our tight schedule and helpful for recommending these excellent dishes. Because it is a very authentic place, be warned that there may be groups of loud Chinese aunties and uncles at adjacent tables and haggling over the bill. It's part of the charm, though. read more

I would like to highly recommend this traditional northeast of china style restaurant to everyone who have never tried it before. The cost performance is very high if you are a pure food lover and a big appetite. The service is super nice and friendly. Everyone was so productive and you don't need to wait for a long time to have a plate. For the food, I love every courses in this restaurant, especially the deep fried small yellow croaker and stir fried pickled cabbage with glass noodles. By the way, the free relish ia also very tasty and yummy. Sour and sweet pork in a traditional way cook is a little bit too sweet for me. If you wanna try it, I will recommend the way cooking with ketchup. In addition, if you have niver tried frozen pork skin, you must try it in this restaurant! Came here because the hubby and I wanted to eat some dumplings with the in-laws. His mother highly recommended this place and even before we sat down, she ordered FOUR plates of dumplings and other appetizers while my husband ordered something along the lines of braised pork (I think?). Anyway, as a warning, FOUR PLATES is definitely TOO much for four people - and I thought uncle's mumblings about not being able to finish because it was 80 dumplings was an exaggeration (spoiler alert: it really wasn't). So overall, each plate holds 20 cooked dumplings depending on which type you ordered. Out of the four variations we had, I liked the regular pork with chives better and the other pork with pickled(?) veggies (I'm not too sure how to put this in english but the veggie in it smells kinda sour and it tastes a bit sour with pork). The other ones we got were with fish (only good with hot sauce - I guess to mask whatever residual fishiness) and pork with dill (?? not sure, maybe it wasn't dill but it was so pungent that I cannot keep eating it.) The pork was also fantastic! But don't get the pork feet (I didn't even touch it but from what everyone was saying, it was super bland and not tasty!). Overall, the place was okay but I'm not sure if I'm willing to go back. If I do, it'll probably be for the regular pork and chives dumpling and the braised pork! I am so impressive that the menu included pictures with the descriptions of each dishes.The service was really good and the boss lady came by our table to ask how we enjoyed the food...I told her YUMMY! Food: Tofu with sauteed carrots and onions with a light sauce, Cumins Lamb (my dish), something dried tea shoots which uses the crystals in the pot to heat up...I totally forgot the name, and pigs feet Wow I absolutely love the Cumins Lamb and the spices were just perfect but my dad can't take the heat so he picked around the lamb without the amounts of red hot peppers. I can't give Golden Palace anything less than 5 stars. This northern-Chinese restaurant really delivered in authentic dishes, generous portions, great tastes, and friendly staff. Golden Palace is tucked away in a very residential area, but it is worth the walk. One of my friends is from northern China, so he was helpful in choosing dishes for us. We got the sour cabbage (with beef), yellow fish, fried eggplant, and pork dumplings. (See my photo!) Our food filed the table! The fried eggplant was probably our favorite; the texture was so unique, and the tastes were great. (Be careful of the hot peppers!) The sour cabbage was also very new to me. The sourness is modest, and I couldn't stop eating it. The fish was also very good. One order included two fish in a brown sauce. Again, the taste was different than what you'd get at a "traditional American Chinese" restaurant. The waiters and waitresses were really nice and all smiles. At the end, we got a complimentary red bean/sticky rice dessert. I'm not usually a red bean fan, but the dish was great! Go for a pitcher of beer. It'll cool your mouth off a bit. Another great northern Chinese restaurant in Flushing! We were thinking about having a Chinese for dinner. The northern Chinese food is the type of Chinese food that we both absolutely love. Instead of going to the usual place for it, we wanted to try a new place. After reading the good Yelp reviews about this place, we decided to stop by. The service was good but nothing we can write about. As for the food, wow, they were really good. One of us weren't even hungry & still able to say, "Wow, this is delicious!" We ordered one of our favorite northern Chinese dish, the sliced fish with chili. It's fried fish filet with chili & cumin. Absolutely delicious! Not too greasy. Definitely packed full of flavor. The other dish that we ordered was the string beans with minced pork. Another hit! We love it! The flavor were just absolutely perfect! The portion were generous. We both shared the two dishes & two bowls of rice. We couldn't finish them all. There were just a lot of food. We had to take some home. Golden Palace serves northern Chinese cuisine, which i have no knowledge about, except to say, after tasting it, that it varies in its use of vegetables and the way it prepares its dishes and meats. well, that and it's delicious. if you're looking for savory, full flavored punch in your food, then 東北 cuisine is definitely the way to go. they have a Spiced Beef Shank ($10.99) which is a specialty of the house and is only available for a limited number of servings a day. it's available warmed or cold. although usually i would opt for the warm version, the cold version is just as good. although the meat's been cooked, cooled, and then sliced, it retains a moist texture. with the accompanying garlic soy sauce, it's hearty and delicious. similarly, the 大拉皮 Green Bean Sheet Jelly ($9.99) is a tart and cooling dish with cucumbers and carrots, like a cold salad. i highly recommend the 尖椒肥腸 Intestines in Fresh Hot Pepper ($8.99) which packs a punch of spice and is a great accompaniment with rice. fair warning, the green peppers are very spicy. One of our favorite dishes was 酸菜粉絲 Sour Cabbage with Vermicelli ($7.99). the stir fried sour cabbage provides instant umami inside your mouth, and the vermicelli adds heft and contrasting texture to the crunchiness of the cabbage. an interesting dish is the 血肠 Blood Sausage. i've never encountered it before, although was told it is a very authentic dish that has died out in most restaurants. it's essentially a sausage casing filled with pigs' blood that is steamed and then sliced. it's served with a garlic soy dipping sauce. i love eating offal, but i found the texture of the dish... unpleasant. the inside is just too mushy and off-putting for me to enjoy. there was also a vegetarian stir fry consisting of wood ear mushrooms, bean sprouts, and carrots served with handmade pancakes, raw sliced scallions, and the brown sauce usually served with Peking duck to be wrapped like a tiny burrito. every table orders this dish so i recommend giving it a shot. if anything, you'll feel healthier for having done so. Dishes we could have done without: 焦溜茄子 Eggplant with Brown Sauce ($7.99). i'm a huge fan of eggplant, and while the eggplant was properly tender, the dish felt overly greasy and lacked the flair of the other dishes. a similar problem occurred with the 回鍋肉 Sautéed Sliced Pork w. Pepper & Chili ($8.99). the 蒜蓉空心菜 Sauteed Chinese Watercress with Garlic ($9.99) lacked any uniqueness of flavor, but then again, it was mainly ordered to provide some much needed green vegetables to our growing table of dishes. Uncle was a big fan of the 肉絲炒乾豆角 Sautéed Sliced Pork w. Tofu ($12.99) but i found it a bit salty. according to him, the dish was extremely authentic and i did like the dried tofu sheets, which i rarely see used in the Chinese cuisine served at restaurants. another warning: the portions at this restaurant are pretty epic. my mother's side of the family tends to over-order when they go out, but our table was pretty daunting and the servers kept running out of room to put each new dish that arrived. which reminds me: the service is friendly but not the best. it seems to be 1 waiter and 1 busser for the entire restaurant, and neither can keep up with the speed in which the dishes come out of the kitchen. so be prepared to have empty dirty plates on your table for the duration of your meal or to have clean plates stacked upon old empty dirty plates. as if we hadn't stuffed ourselves enough, after finding out that they make their dumplings fresh on the premises, Uncle ordered a plate of 三鮮水餃(蒸) Seafood Dumplings with Pork ($8.99). as with all dumplings that are freshly made, the filling was succulent and juicy, and the skin retained the fresh dough snap, although a little on the thicker side. overall, the food was good and different than Flushing's usual offerings. definitely recommend giving it a try. read more

Pretty standard fare, nothing spectacular. Just barely making it to 3 stars. I am from northern China so my standards going in to this restaurant were pretty high. I guess it was a bit of a let down from what I'm used to. We got the liang pi (green bean sheet jelly), chicken with mushroom stew, and pork with vermicelli stew. The green bean sheet jelly had some type of wasabi in and wasn't really to my liking. Some people might like wasabi? But it just didn't taste like liang pi I usually have back in China. Otherwise, good texture of the sheet jelly and good proportion of mixed veggies. The two stews we got were too similar, but we realized this too late. Between the two I preferred the pork one because the pork itself had more flavor. I thought the chicken was too dry and whole stew was too oily. When the fire at the bottom went out, the stew got colder and a film of oil formed over it. The mushrooms were good, but that's about it. Pork was also a little too fatty. Vermicelli was good in both dishes. Portions for everything were huge (typical northern China style) so at least it ended up lasting my friend and I both two meals. So, so, so awesome. I trekked all the way to Cherry Avenue near Main Street in Flushing to try this place, and it did not disappoint. Somehow we managed to slide in right before the evening rush, as every table quickly filled up. We were the only two non-Chinese people in the place, the surest sign of a great Chinese restaurant. The waitress immediately brought over a huge salad piled high with cilantro, roasted chilis and salt. We ordered a couple of dishes (they all looked good, judging from other people's tables) and it was all awesome. Huge portions, with plenty of leftovers to take home. The guys at the next table over looked like they were eating enough food for a small city, and were sneaking cups of clear alcohol from a bottle hidden under their table. All in all, I would go back anytime I am up for the trip to Queens. If you are starting to get your fill of the Szechuan fare on Main Street, try this hole in the wall serving northern cuisine. Just get rid of your English name. Or name it Kickass Foods. Liao Ning Fan Dian, (Liao Ning Restaurant) is freaking awesome... if you're a traditional Chinese dude like me. It's for Chinese foodies and people who really love Chinese food. Sure, the place doesn't look high class and I bet its kitchens are not as clean as my other 5 star restaurants. But I rate dumplings. I simply have to say this is the best place to have steamed dumplings. Come here if you want to have authentic northern handmade steamed dumplings. The skin is perfect, the xier (filling) is perfect. If you do not like these dumplings, that simply means you don't really like authentic real dumplings, because this is what its supposed to taste like. Oh yes, as with any proper dumpling meal, you have your dumplings with vinegar and soysauce. Hell yes. I've had many dishes. Another good one is 'xiao ji dun muo gu,' which is chicken and mushroom. This classic northern dish is so commonplace and homey that it's a sin not for northern restaurants to not have it on the menu, just like how beef and broccoli is for fake Chinese food holes. According to a poster on Chowhound, the Chinese name of this restaurant is Liaoning Fandian - Zhengzong Dongbei Fengwei which means Liaoning Restaurant - Authentic Northeast Flavors. Restaurants serving Northeastern Chinese food are not very common and this one is definitely worth a visit for someone interested in regional Chinese cuisine. Pitchers of Budweiser to boot. I could have eaten another order by myself since I only got a precious few pieces before it was finished. Absolutely perfectly fried (which can sometimes be difficult with eggplant), with an addictive vinegary, sweet and slightly spicy sauce. Also had the scrambled eggs with toon. I really dig this dish, with its crispy edges and delicious toon. Had to have it again. This one was crispier than the one in the picture and obviously made it taste waaay better. Crispy lamb with chili pepper was again excellent. We also got a crispy fried fish dish in a similar preparation-- lots of cumin. They really do an excellent job with fried dishes. Dumplings still have as much pure lamb flavor as any dish around. Also got their rendition of mapo tofu with more of that great ground lamb meat on top. Shame about the name. "Golden Palace" seems like it might be a regular ol' Canto-Hunan takeout joint, especially since this place is just far enough off to Flushing strip that it could potentially be outside the zone of regional houses of wonderfulness that thrive all around Main Street. But no, this place is actually a temple of northeastern/dongbei Chinese food. The owners are from Liaoning province, home to the gritty but large city of Shenyang and more than half of the North Korean border. The dishes incorporate grains and vegetables found up north, with the expected strong Korean influence. There's a preponderance of pickled and sour cabbage throughout the meal, from the complementary panchan (just two for a party of eight, so serving a small role than at a Korean restaurant proper) to the sour cabbage and pork casserole with glass noodles. Dongbei cuisine isn't a simple mix of northern Chinese food with Korean meats. It's an entirely separate affair, and the menu impressively is almost entirely devoted to it. Highlights included a hearty order of jiaozi with celery, root vegetables and pork, and a great corn cake that should be studying by line chefs at southern restaurants in the city who think cornbread should have the consistency of a yellow hockey puck. The service was friendly, and the waiters weren't afraid to give a recommendation or two when we expressed a desire for the food of Liaoning. A huge flounder, covered in pepper and spice was our reward for asking. The free dessert, a red bean and sticky rice cake, was a nice touch. (One note: We were seated in the back room, which I understand is a sign of respect, but I could have done without the odor of stale cigarettes. The food here is from Northern China, in the mountains, so some dishes are different, but my opinion still stands. I went here as a meetup group dinner and so there were lots of dishes to try. Appetizers: -Shredded Potato Salad (raw) with hot sauce - not too crunchy and you dont mind the raw aspect. -Braised pig feet in brown sauce - meh, not great, and I have had good trotter before -smoked chicken bone - not really worth it either, flavor is fantastic, but little meat -SQUID WITH HOT SAUCE - this was the winner of the night. A reason to come here -Crispy Flounder with chili pepper - this is an asian version of "fish n chips" minus the chips - very crispy and more of a saltly crust than pepper -Special yellow fish - whole crispy with bacon and ginger - another great dish that was bursting with flavor and not like other crispy fish I have had at Chinese establishments. -Pork and Chinese cabbage cake - large cakes, served 8 per order, but each is huge. Top it w/ garlic sauce. Dumplings: We tried the sour cabbage and pork (their specialty), seafood and pork and lamb. The sour cabbage was the winner of the three Dessert: Fried sweet potato wrapped in syrup - another favorite, crispy sugary sweet yams, not like american yams. Very good. Triple check your bill before you pay for it!!!! We order the 1 x celery dumpling and 1x Chinese cabbage dumpling for take out, which it is $7.99 each on the Take-Out menu. When we pay the bill, the price for the dumpling becomes $8.99 per each order. The restaurant claimed the price has changed. I explained to the restaurant that they should honor the price $7.99 that is list in the Take-Out menu but they refuse to do so. Sadly, the dumpling is pretty good but overall experience is NOT great. I DO NOT trust them because they want to charge any price to you on their discretion. Northeastern Chinese fare. And the mainland-ish decor too! Northeast Chinese is typically described as "mian-shi"... aka noodle-based aka flour-based foods. This place doesn't disappoint. Get the dumplings. Get the noodles. Get some beer. Do like the locals do and watch Chinese TV and spit on the floor. Smile at the chefs in the back. Tip well. Come again.
