Sweet & Sour Chicken lunch portion
Matt B.

The sweet and sour chicken was the normal fast food Chinese variety with a reasonable portion size for the lunch price. Strangely the Vegetable egg roll appears to have ground pork in it. Not a problem for omnivores, but peculiar given the name. The fried rice was really just rice with a little egg mixed in.

Chicken with Black Bean Sauce

Needs updating inside. The food was all bland. I got the steamed dumplings and had zero flavor. The chicken with black bean sauce was disgusting and it did not look like black bean sauce. It had a handful of black beans in it. Very disappointed and will not be returning.

Excellent food. Reliable delivery. We've been using Hunan Kitchen for many years. It's our first choice for Chinese cuisine.

My waitress said they had taken them off the menu but there was such an outcry they brought them back. The green beans had a very light coating on them and were delicious I can see why people complained about them being taken off the menu It also came with a trio of dipping sauces. The sweet chili was good but the green onion one was amazing. The bulgogi steak was very tender and delicious.

I ordered the Basil Fried Rice, which is described as coming with egg, chicken, shrimp, and vegetables. I specifically requested no egg, no chicken, and double spicy green sauce on the side. Instead, I received plain fried rice with no egg, no chicken, no shrimp, and they didn't include the double green sauce I requested. Paying $15 for what was essentially plain fried rice was pretty disappointing. To make matters worse, the "green sauce" they did include wasn't even the usual spicy green sauce you get when dining in. It looked more like finely chopped green onions than the actual sauce. I also ordered Yaki Udon and requested double spicy green sauce with that as well--and once again, it was missing. It honestly felt like no one actually read my order. They seemed to go off muscle memory instead of following the modifications. Removing the shrimp entirely when I never asked for that just reinforces the impression that my order wasn't checked before it went out. The pickup experience wasn't much better. My order was sitting on the pickup shelf, clearly ready, but I had to flag down the host to retrieve it while a staff member stood just a few steps away. It would take less than a minute for the takeout staff to greet guests, confirm a name or order number, ask if anything else is needed, and hand over the order. The food at Hawkers is good--that's why I keep coming back--but the consistency of the takeout service needs work. Reading orders carefully and giving a little more attention to customers picking up their food would go a long way. Great food, but the execution and service didn't match.

This is a short review based on my first (but definitely not last!) visit. Will update in the…read morefuture. Was heading home from airport after a long flight. Was feeling hangry because I had planned on stopping at Hard Times for a bowl of chili -and found out they were closed on Mondays. So, pretty much pulled a name out of a hat and would up at Chuan Tian Xia because, well, Szechuan cooking uses chiles, no? Yesssss! I ordered Signature Dumplings and a bowl of Beijing-style Beijing-style Zhajiang Noodles. The dumplings were outstanding: a mix of shrimp, pork, and chive that were plump, juicy, fragrant with the herbaceous flavor of chives. The accompanying sauce was not too sweet, not too hot, just right as a complement to the dumplings. Yowza. I was a happy camper... ...and then I dug into my noodles. Double yowza! Thick wheat noodles topped with a rich sauce made from (I think) fermented soybean paste and braised pork belly, garnished with cucumbers. The portion was way to big for me to eat after my flight, but I really, really enjoyed it (and the remaining dumplings) for lunch today. Did I say yowza? I'm an adventurous eater so the menu's less Americanized items were what I would have ordered given more time (like Maoxuewang: can you say "pig's tongue, spam, pork intestine, and beef tripe"? Protein is protein, baby!). Just means I need to come back, and I will, as quickly as I can.

We had the Ma Po Tofu, chive dumplings, sesame chicken, and noodles and out of all of those, the noodles and Ma po tofu were our favorites! Service was quick and the restaurant was very spacious and accommodating.

There's only free parking on Sundays. Most of the dim sum we selected were delicious such as the triple layer doupi, Beijing duck bao, mini Lion's head, pork soup dumpling, and beef wide noodle, for entrees and lava walnut bao, baked egg yolk lava bun, and mini rice ball in wine broth for dessert. The pork soup dumplings were full of soup. The desserts, roast pork pastry, and pork shu mai were hot and freshly cooked. For soup, I liked the pork ribs and lotus soup better than the fish ball soup which was bland. I've had better cucumber salads, stir fried green beans, steamed pork ribs, and sesame noodles. The honey riblets are good if you like very sweet ribs. There were a lot of servers coming constantly asking if you want to order more. There is a forced 18% gratuity for tip if you choose to have the AYCE. I liked how the portion sizes were small so you can try a variety of dishes.

The location here is near the metro, but seems out of place in a building without other restaurants kind of hidden below the street level. They seemed to acknowledge everyone other than me who was there for takeout, but I finally got mine. I tried a fried rice and was irritated that there was a no egg option but not a no broccoli option (not a Chinese vegetable mind you), which left me with little more than a colored rice to pick through. The tofu with hot peppers hit a nice heat but not the best rendition of this dish I've had in terms of flavor complexity. The best thing I got was a dan dan noodle dish with some vicious sauce and little tofu bites. Overall though, scant portions for the money, and not quite the experience I was hoping for.
