This is just your regular Chinese takeout place. We usually order the General Tso or Triple Delight which are always tastes the same, no disappointments. One day; however, my sister decided she really wanted duck and ordered the Crispy Duck. I'm sure she envisioned the authentic type you can pick up at Chinese supermarkets....end result: not so much. I'm not sure what even made it "crispy" since it was just dry duck meat. Also, I must note that parking in this shopping center is a real pain, especially on weekends. Great Chinese food takeout spot. They have a TON of veggie options, including vegetarian general tso chicken, vegetarian sesame chicken, vegetarian orange chicken, along with many others. On the never-ending search for good Americanized Chinese take-out, I tried this place tonight. Nope, another one off the list. I got what was theoretically kung pao chicken and fried rice. It was absolutely tasteless, no lie. I even put soy sauce on the rice just so there would be SOME flavor, and I almost never do that! The chicken, while extremely generous in portion size, was tasteless as well. There were some pepper pods in it, but they contributed nothing. No-thing. It was so tasteless that I threw away the leftovers, and I love me some leftovers (and hate wasting food). So I recommend skipping this place and trying somewhere else. read more

Hunan Kitchen handed out fliers in our local neighborhood so I decided to give them a try. When I went to pick up my order at the counter I was swarmed with fruit flies making me question its cleanliness. The hot and sour soup was bland and fatty. If you want chinese that is tasteless, this is the place to go. I tried egg drop soup, hot and sour soup, fried chicken wings, crab rangoon, chicken lo mein, and hunan chicken. The hot and sour soup and the chicken wings were the only things that had good flavor. The fried wontons for the soups were stale. The hunan chicken was not spicy at all. The crab rangoon was greasy with a funky after taste. The chicken lo mein wasn't anything great either. Not impressed. I would rather order from Mayflower. First of all, there is no decent authentic Chinese food in dc metro area. Having said that I frequently get take out from this place that has decent americanized chinese take out food. Cheap, consistent, reliable, quick, edible. I frequently get kung bao chicken without celery and combination fried rice. read more

This is a very solid place for Chinese. If I had stuck to our normal pattern of chicken lo mien, moo shu and sweet and sour chicken, four stars. I went a little crazy and ordered crispy shrimp and mixed veg off the chef's special menu. Crispy was not. They tasted like they were battered in uncooked raw cake mix. The mixed vegetables were mixed in the sense that there was more than one vegetable - there were mushroom caps AND bok chou. Two vegetables! But the whole bok choys were layered under the mushroom caps so technically they weren't mixed - "Two Layered Vegetables" is a more accurate name. I still love their moo shu veg or beef a lot so three stars feels very comfortable, but stick with the basics. Delivery is always very fast. read more

I was just there and ordered what I ordered before - sesame tofu with broccoli. The first time I ordered it the charge was 10.50. This time 13.75. Although Alexis' review is mostly true, you have to know what to order from there. It's a great take-out restaurant. They are quick and some dishes are very good. I've tried most Chinese restaurants in Bethesda, and quite a few in Rockville. I used to get the pan fried noodle dish every Sunday night. I think it's one of their best dishes. 2nd fav is the Sesame chicken. They use bigger pieces of chicken than other most restaurants. Overall; consistently good Americanized Chinese cuisine. read more

The only reasons to visit this restaurant are that it is inexpensive and close to where you live. I visited Hunan Kitchen twice in the last six months. Both meals were terrible. On 3/19 I had kung pao scallops. Fifty percent of this dish was celery. It was tasteless and bland. At least there were a fair number of scallops in the dish. read more

We have had their food since they opened, not frequently, but several times a year. Does anyone know if they have changed hands? Tonight's take-out was pretty awful. Won Ton Soup - very watery broth with no flavor, underdone, gummy won-tons, and crispy noodles unlike any I have ever had. Pretty bad. The moo-shoo pork was not much better. Crispy beef is the best around. Egg rolls are very good. Shrimp fried rice is good. Battered chicken in fried dishes can be fatty but same as most local places. Ask for extra spicy to jazz it up. I've lived in the area and there really aren't that many decent Chinese take outs, that said this one is my favorite. Too many Chinese places want to fuse their menu with thai or Japanese cuisine which means they don't do anything well. This place doesn't stray. read more

I order Chinese food a couple times a month from Golden house in Bethesda. Today I was passing by Hunan Kitchen (an old family favorite), and I thought "I have not had them in years, too bad they don't deliver"....then I see a sign that says "WE DELIVER"!! Awesome! I ordered this evening, and it was as good as I remembered. Don't get me wrong, it's still take out Chinese food, but it is now delivered to your doorstep. This place used to be excellent -- about 10 years ago. Recently though, it's changed owners and has fallen to pieces. It used to be family owned, and you could taste the love in their food. Things were prepared fresh, to order, and were downright delicious. But the last few times I've eaten here, I've just been disappointed. The food has no flavor, the egg rolls are greasy, and the spicy level varies greatly, depending on what night you go. Sometimes you order a spicy dish and it's bland as can be, other times it's so spicy you can't even eat it. No consistency here. Sad to say, I will not be returning here again. Unfortunately we have received raw meat in our take out food twice. The first time we ordered my boyfriend had raw pork in his dish, the second time I had pieces of raw chicken in my vegetarian dish! We really liked this place, but unfortunately they aren't taking their food safety seriously, and after complaining twice, very unapologetic. I like the food, and the people are friendly. I went to this Hunan Kitchen when I worked in Bethesda, because the food are refreshing--they are refreshing in term of its uniqueness. I ordered Orange Chicken with white meat and light sauce...I received a bunch of soggy fried batter drenched in orange sauce. It quickly turned into a game of find the meat in the soggy bread. This place is hit or miss...some things were good, others were just OK, and the rest was downright awful. They didn't bother to include a menu with the delivery, which is just as well since I wouldn't order from them again anyway. For what they charge (especially for the food that was so bland, I had to throw it away), there is much better Chinese food to be found in the area. Also, while I agree the portions are generous, I also think it's a waste of money to have so much extra food. I'd rather pay less for a smaller portion, which is not an option given that you can only order lunch or dinner size, and you can't order the lunch-sized portion during dinnertime hours. So, you are stuck with enough to feed several people, which may be good for some but not so much when you're only one person. Also, given that it wasn't so great when it was first cooked, I'm guessing the leftovers are less than stellar. Disappointing. read more
