My husband and I have been going to Hunan Pan for 20 plus years. We ordered take out two nights ago. Wonton soup, egg rolls and tempura rock shrimp. The egg roll and wonton soup were very good, but the tempura shrimp were a huge disappointment. There were six shrimp in what appeared to be potato strips like hash browns. In no way did it resemble tempura batter. The worst part was two of the six shrimp had only batter and shrimp shell. I called the restaurant and was told the tempura shrimp come from a company in New Jersey and they would let the company know. It surprised me that the restaurant did not prepare the tempura shrimp at the time of the order and relied on frozen tempura shrimp. They didn't even offer any compensation for the $11.00 shrimp that were not even edible. I'm so disappointed in their poor customer service and will not be back again. They lost a loyal customer. read more

We decided to switch up our Friday dinner rotation and ended up going to Hunan Pan. My fiancé loves this place. We were promptly seated and my fiancé ordered his favorite sweet and sour chicken and I opted for the chicken teriyaki bento box. My fiancé raves about how good his s&s chicken was. My bento box had a great assortment! My only issue was with the grilled chicken. Looked a little strange and might have been that pre cooked pre grilled stuff which I think is vile. Lol. We've ordered sushi from here several times since moving to Shelton and it's some of the best sushi I've ever had. The ingredients - especially the fish - are always fresh, and the rolls are very unique and delicious without the flavors of heavy sauces overpowering the freshness of the fish. Highly recommend the Hawaii Roll, Baby Face Roll, Queen Roll, Big Mama Roll, and Mexico Roll. Well worth the money! read more

The highlight was actually the fried rice. It was one of the tastiest fried rice I've had in a long time. So much so, that every time I'm driving around Shelton, I think about maybe ordering it for lunch. Don't get me wrong, our party had ordered other plates and they were mostly happy with them (the teriyaki chicken wasn't a hit though), but everyone that tried the fried rice, wanted more of it. What a surprise, a bright & spotless Chinese restaurant with a neat little sushi bar that actually turns out delicious food. This popular place ( big takeout lunch business ) does stir fry right, accompanying vegetables fresh & crisp & proteins tender & lean. My experience with online ordering was excellent & packaging & front of the house attentiveness to patrons excels. If I could change one thing - it would be to have the restaurant live up to its advertisement of Chinese veggies in entree descriptions. As with most Chinese restaurants these days, carrots & broccoli often masquerade for the real thing. Fortunately this place offers a nice balance of veggies in their dishes, but they still are predominantly the conventional western hemisphere type. It's inevitable that one night during every visit I make to see my CT family we will order up a huge spread from Hunan Pan. It's one of our family's favorite meals. Everything arrives correct, hot, and delicious. We've never had a cross-contamination issue for our GF family members. Other area branches of our family also happily chose Hunan Pan on the regular. Years ago I ate at Hunan Pan when they were located off Bridgeport Ave. near the car dealer lots. The food was good, but this is the first time I tried it since they've move to the new location on Bridgeport Ave. Nice new interior look, I like the booths too. So we ordered a chicken dish, noodle dish with rice, I noticed the prices are not cheap. The flavor was ok, nothing special...had better. I am Asian, grew up in Chinatown and I am more critical about Chinese food served at restaurants or take outs...it's all about flavor and ingredients. With that said and say again, I've had better at a better price. Not sure I will go out of my way to return. Sorry, I can't recommend this place. read more

Great Chinese and Japanese food. No matter what we have ordered has been excellent. It is hard to pick a favorite from any of their sushi selections to the Chinese. Everything is fresh and they use a wide selection of different vegetables in the dishes. This place is the whole package. It was late, around the time places start closing and you wanna make sure you go someplace that's still welcoming. This is that place. They had a beautiful, balanced looking Christmas tree by the entrance, not too much, not too little on the decorations. They were polite and welcoming from moment we entered until we left. As soon as we walked in, we were seated right away. We followed our hostess down a maze to a corner in the restaurant. To begin, we ordered the fried dumplings. Very flavorful and good portion. The menus could have been reprinted as every single item price was sharpied over. We also ordered the General Tsos chicken which was, again, fantastic flavor and size. The water was also very cold and tasty. Our waitress was very attentive and kind to us throughout the entire meal. The music could be improved as the elevator music affected the mood. Still good, less ambiance in the new location although closer to Corporate Drive and busier. My two meals at the new location were okay. Honestly the crispy noodles (you need to ask for them) were the big highlight. Kind of a let down after far better Chinese food at Lao Sze Chaun in Milford. But real Chinese food is quite different than American Chinese and much, much harder to find. Although, it is one of the few Chinese places in the Valley where you can sit down and eat so that is worth a lot. read more

I think we found our new Asian takeaway spot. We had General tsos chicken, house special Pad Thai, fried dumplings and rice. First off- very generous portions compared to most places. That was a great surprise. That alone was fantastic to see. Second, very good flavors and seemed freshly made. The person that took our order was very friendly and a pleasure to deal with. This place makes me think immediately of the book by Harvard math grad and author of Fortune Cookie Chronicles. Joe is very kind Fujianese host. I am quite aware of the wave of Chinese joint ownership in the east coast, and how difficult the day in and day out is, not to mention the oft-cited loneliness mentioned in conversation. He is amiable and means well...about this i am sure. With all good intention, friendliness, and way overeager and bit hovering extra waitstaff, we experienced a camping experience kind of cloying Chinese dinner. Oh what do I mean....imagine driving into the woods, and accidentally running into a Chinese joint that looks like a camping cabin. Welcome...you have found the place off the road close to where all the auto dealerships are. Extremely dark inside. I get it; save electricity...but then, why is there a big aquarium and large flat screen on? Beyond that it is difficult to locate, this place is so confused! The menus are truly from about 20 yrs back. They still serve dishes garnished with carrot-cut flowers!!! Chinese food with lots of dark, sticky, sweet, oily sauces. I feel awful that I cannot swing from the treetops and sing its praises. But, honestly, after a $45 dinner, ordering 3 sub-par mediocre dishes, we felt seriously ripped off. I must say, though, the shrimp were cooked correctly, as were the 3 scallops. But, lack of caramelization, and the sauces.......sigh. This place has a sushi bar inside of an extremely dated interior. It's cavernous compared to the sit-down patrons. A bar is located in the back of the room. All too confusing for me. & those prices...$14-18 an entree? We've been eating in or getting take out from Hunan for about 5 years, then moved out of state and went back today ( after 4 yrs) and the only thing that changed is the decor. The female waitress (I stil don't know her name after all those years) immediately recognized us and greeted us as if were family. Food- nothing has changed! Great quality, flavorful and well priced. We had hot & sour and miso soup, then spicy omagashi and the sushi. I'm super happy that they are moving to a more visible location. They are great people with some fantastic food . The only bad thing, we are heading back to the west coast and probably won't get a chance to visit them anytime soon. read more

This sushi restaurant was more than we could've ever asked for when coming to Shelton Connecticut. It's a diamond in the rough, a total gem. I never would have imagined that I would find a sushi restaurant that served such fresh fish as this one. The rolls were incredibly delicious and well constructed. The yellow tail sashimi was out of this world. For the first time ever, I had my hot sake individually poured each time by the waitress who was incredibly sweet. The chef was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and funny. They were plenty of regulars coming in and out who loved this place as much as we were. Tom was amazing. He such a nice, friendly man and went above and beyond to make sure that we were having the time of our lives and enjoyed every bite. We are so glad we found this restaurant. We will definitely be coming back anytime where in Shelton possibly again this week. read more

After reading all the really good reviews we decided to give Hunan Pan a try. We had dined in the previous restaurant several times but then found it not much better than Asian places closer to us. But this new Hunan Pan is a much improved experience. Order was taken over the phone early on a Saturday evening so that we didn't have to wait when we picked up. We ordered: shrimp with lobster sauce, Salmon with Avocado Roll, Calamari, and General Tsao's Prawn. Some dishes were better than others. The differences were in part due to my own mistakes. Shrimp in Lobster Sauce is always good in a restaurant, but placing it in a take-out container actually steams the sauce and it gets watery. I would order it again if we were dining in the restaurant. It needed a bit of salt or soy sauce but I'd rather have it have too little and add my own then have the Chef overseason. The sauce was good but would have been better had it not thinned out. All that said, the shrimp alone were worth the eating! Large, juicy and, in spite of the reheated sauce, tender. Delicious. My husband claimed his roll (which he often orders in other places) was fresher and better than expected given another customer's remark that Hunan Pan was probably not the place for Sushi. We'll definitely try other Sushi/Sashimi offerings..the roll was as good as any we've had at Wild Kanji, Red Lotus, Misimmi, Main Hing or Wasabi. The eggroll was nothing to write home about (at least as good as any other place tho) but was less oily than other places. The oil, is what makes the taste but is not great for anyone. I shall not order this again. The Callamari was a disappointment. Over seasoned, over floured and probably overcooked as they were very very chewy. But then who orders Calamari in a Chinese restaurant! I did knowing it wasn't the place to get it but wanting to know if they actually made good Calamari. Next time I'll stick to Italian restaurant for this dish!! BUT the star of the meal was the General Tsao's Prawns. We like our food with heat. This did not disappoint! (Tell the Chef if you want it less hot). The prawns were meaty and sweet and really delicious, the sauce wonderful. The entire order cost $60 and was worth it. We will definitely return...many times. So far...the best Asian experience we've enjoyed including all the places in Milford. Don't hesitate all those five star ratings are right on! read more

This is for their former location. I live about 1/4 mile from their 'old place' and felt the food was wonderful! Boneless ribs, Lo Mien Shrimp, Veggie Dumplings. Now that I cannot just roll down and pick it up -let's see how fast their delivery is. That's gonna make them or break them. I have a feeling from what I'm told - it's breaking them - and that's a shame. BUT - you try to go to high too fast, and all good things must at some point end. We'll see! I absolutely love this place they have amazing Chinese food and fresh sushi. I'll say this you get what you pay for it's very expensive but it's completely worth it!
