First time to eat here for my familys dinner. It was pretty good and we left full with leftovers for tomorrow. I do have a different favorite here in CPark. Our favorite Chinese food restaurant. Food is good and service is excellent. Love their hot and sour soup and General Tso chicken.

Food was pretty good and bountiful but I felt a bit rushed. Waitress constantly came to the table asking to retire dishes when we were still nibbling. I am a huge fan of Chinese food but have a hard time finding places which provide food that is up to par. However, I am glad to report that Hunan was a hit above and beyond my expectations. We ordered takeout from here for dinner on a weeknight, which included the he sesame chicken, crab rangoon, egg rolls and dumpling soup. All of it was superb and we will be back! Take out food is amazing! The food seems to always be fresh and the time of delivery is great. Hands down this prolly the best takeout Chinese food I've ever had. VERY DISTURBING & RECKLESS. - this restaurant gave us the wrong order. They insisted on coming to our home and picking it up and giving it to the customer that ordered it. The staff called and I explained that when we went to pick it up they gave my special needs son extra bag. OMG this place is a god send. Im not even exaggerating. I've been here millions of times. Im a Chinese food fanatic and I've been EVERYWHERE but this place is my absolute favorite.  From the egg drop soup to the sesame chicken (WHICH I will add that almost no other Chinese restaurant has this anymore and traded it with the eh Orange chicken) but GOD their sesame chicken, wow, its so crispy on the outside of soft and juicy in the inside. The rainbow roll was amazing. Wonderful flavors and fish looked fresh and bright and colorful. Great place for sushi. The seaweed salad, however, was good... But I honestly think it could've been better. They put WAY too much sauce in my salad. I tipped the plate by an inch and the sauce came pouring down the edge of the plate. It made the salad taste fake and artificial. Definitely will return but will not order seaweed salad again. Blech. read more

My favorite thing about Hunan Ranch is that I know I'm always going to have a good experience. My husband and I have been going there for about four years, and it's never been dirty, the food has always been quite good, the service has always been excellent, and I've never felt sick after eating there. The waitstaff deserve a special nod. They could teach classes on how to deliver excellent customer service. (Some other area businesses could certainly use them!) I've worked as a waitress, and it can be a demanding job. The men here (it's usually two men when we've been there) are AMAZING. The vegetarian options on the menu are limited, but the staff have been great about letting me substitute tofu for chicken in various dishes. I grew up on Asian food. Was really looking forward to this place based on personal recommendations and the glowing Yelp reviews. But... Definitely won't be going back. Beyond too pricey for Chinese food, this is not good Chinese food. And I got food poisoning here to boot. Ordered four different dishes, so not sure which one did the deed -- they were all unremarkable in taste. The only good thing about this place was the pretty fish tank. Based on hype and recommendations, I really, really, really wanted to like this restaurant because I desperately need a good nearby Chinese restaurant. I have been a customer for quite a while but NO MORE. I was there yesterday to get a to-go order and I was AMAZED by how unfriendly the girl that took my order was. She could not be more obvious that she did not like her job and acted like she was doing me a favor to take my money. There are too many great restauraunts out there that actually have great customer service. This will be my last visit. I live in Avery Ranch and I have spoken to several of my neighbors who have said the same treatment was given to them. NEVER AGAIN will I be a customer. read more

They leave the phone off the hook and don't answer! If you run a business customer service has to be paramount. After trying to place an order for 10 minutes over the phone all I got was a busy signal. I was driving past the restaurant and decided to go in and order anyway. When I walked in the phone was off the hook because they "weren't taking phone calls that night". Absolutely ridiculous if you ask me. If you can't answer your phones when customers call what else don't you do right? Seriously questioning the folks that run this place. The food is good but don't expect any service along with it. The best time to go is Before 3pm. This is when the prices are best and the service is crazy fast. About 7 bucks gets you an entree w/fried rice and comes with soup and an egg roll. The won ton soup is great, big fresh wonton!!! They take your order, bring your soup, then usually half way through the soup your meal arrives, which is perfect because its usually so fresh it is too hot to eat right away. all fresh veg, raw to par cooked. Even the scarier things were good!!! Dinner is best with larger groups, because they give you like a metric ton of sticky rice for the table, and entrees are more expensive but they DO grow in proportion to the price, one meal easily feeds two, I am a big dude and I only ate my entire dinner entree once and i was near death, they almost had to call in a rickshaw to get me to the car. read more

I placed an online order with Hunan Ranch. It took an hour and a half for the first half of my order to be delivered. Then another 30 minutes to deliver the rest as they had accidentally split up the order and given it to different driver's. When I finally received the full order after 2 hours from order time, it was not only cold, it was wrong. The main dish was different than what was placed in the order. There was little help in resolving the issue and ultimately nothing was done. I have placed orders in the past with success, but on this date it was a big failure. Beware when ordering. read more

Hunan Ranch is one of my favorite Chinese spots. Love their sesame chicken! They aren't the cheapest, but the portions are big. A lot of times, my husband and I share an entree (and we are not light eaters)! Since having our son, we order online delivery often. The driver who always delivers to us is BEYOND nice. He calls or lightly taps on the door, because he remembers that we have a sleeping baby :) He always asks how he is, how old he is, how big he's getting...then leaves a pair of kid-friendly chopsticks and a fortune cookie for him! Ok well the only reason this place is getting 3 stars is because the food is amazing and the waiters and waitresses are super nice. Not sure what was wrong with the hostess... but as soon as I walked in to get my to go order she gave me the RUDEST look. Up and down stare. I then got my food and she was on her phone not even acknowledging me as I was leaving I said have a good day and she AGAIN looked at me up and down. We ordered the Beef with veggies and The crispy noodles with Beef. When it showed up it was the same dish!!! We were so disappointed because they had the same exact veggies and sauce on both one only had noodles. Hunan Ranch is still our all time, undefeated, For Chinese food! The value is really good. I love going during the week for the special - it's more than enough for one person and it comes with soup and a spring roll. It's always busy but you can always get a seat! If you go on the weekends you don't get soup or spring - they're sold separately, but you do get a giant portion that you can share between two people! We've taken tons of people that have never been there and everyone loves it. Never complaints! read more

Just got food delivered from Hunan Ranch after a bad experience at Hot Wok Cafe. I'm glad I made the switch. The food was spectacular. Delivery was made quick and the delivery driver was super friendly too. He earned a fat tip with the fast delivery! Schezuan Fish with the noodles knocked it out of the park. Simply awesome. Wow, that was the rudest "greeting" I've ever experienced upon entering a restaurant, and it turns out she was the owner! She was standing near the hostess podium when I came in for a late lunch, ON HER PHONE. Not knowing what else to do when she looked up at me, I held up 1 finger to indicate "table for 1 please" and (still on her phone) she looked at her watch as if deciding whether to serve me. Until that moment I hadn't realized they shut down lunch at 3:00, but it was only about 2:45. Apparently she decided to allow me the privilege of dining in her restaurant as she finally ended her call and picked up a menu, then turned to walk to a table. I had to assume she meant for me to follow her since she had not as yet spoken a word to me. Just to see what she would do, I said hello to her, and she didn't even answer. She set the menu on a table and turned away, now apparently chastising one of the waitresses across the room in Chinese. Another waitress came up to serve me and she was very nice the whole time. I commented to her that that was AWKWARD and the hostess seemed very rude. She is the one who informed me that was the owner. Service from the waitress was friendly and fast and I had my food about 5 minutes before 3:00 at which time the waitress asked if I would need anything else because it was last call before the kitchen closed. It's amazing to me that the owner of any business, much less a restaurant would treat a paying customer that way. No matter what is going on, when a customer comes in I would expect an owner to greet them with a smile rather than making them feel like they are interrupting something or made a mistake by coming in. What kind of message does that send the employees? I assume she was yelling at the waitress across the room for not being the one at the door, but there's no excuse for doing that in front of the whole restaurant, especially since there were several other tables of people eating. The only reason I gave them 2 stars is that I've been there many times and their crab rangoons really are awesome and other dishes I've had are not bad at all. The service is usually decent from the waitresses but now that I think of it, knowing who the owner is, I've noticed she never has a smile. I'll probably find another place to go when I feel like Asian food. There are too many choices out there to support a place with such a poor attitude towards their customers. We've had a hard time finding a reliable Chinese restaurant in Northwest Austin and we've been pleased with this restaurant. We've both dined in and ordered take out many times. Our favorites on the menu are the Sesame Chicken and Shrimp, the Orange Chicken and Shrimp, the Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Shrimp Lettuce Wraps. We've found that these dishes have been very consistent and the quality and quantity have been right on. The dishes that we found disappointing were both of the noodle dishes and the Crab Rangoon. The Combination Lo mien came with a good amount of fresh vegetables, but the noodles were a little dry. When I ordered the Pan Fried Noodles, the noodles were even drier and smelled of pancake batter. I had a hard time finishing this dish. The Crab Rangoon had a good consistency, but tasted fishier than I would of liked. The dine-in service has bit a little hit and miss depending on the visit. We've been here times where the service is fast and efficient and other times it seems that the servers are rushed and distracted (even when the restaurant is not very busy). The take-out service has always been very fast and friendly. If I had to choose between the two, I would probably recommend take-out. I can't give an opinion on the whole menu, but the few things that we have enjoyed...have been consistently delicious. We'll be back. read more

In my quest to try all the Asian restaurants in Austin I finally broke down and tried one very near my house that I knew was going to be very Americanized.. I ordered the Duck and asked for them to make it extra spicy. I was impressed with the portion.. it was huge, enough to feed 3 chinese people, 2 skinny Americans, or one fat person. I love Duck and the duck did taste pretty good. It was served with chicken, shrimp and an assortment of veggies. What I didn't like is the total utter lack of any spices.. I asked for extra spicy and it came out as bland as cardboard. .This is the main reason I don't go to Americanized chinese restaurants. The other bright spot were the servers.. I know one of them from Asia Market and she was very friendly and we chatted for a while.. Despite the walking distance from my house, I doubt I will return very often.. read more

you know what....i like this place. =) for just an "everyday" casual sit down dinner type of place for some good asian food, i would recommend this place. very central for all the avery ranch peeps. their portions are very nice. we sweet talked them into turning their sauteed asparagus into an appetizer, and they were really good. so far, i've only only had the sesame tofu for a main dish, and i'm a fan. the same server has served me twice and she is very friendly. the aesthetics are soothing. no complaints here! read more

I tried this place last night for takeout and it was a bit expensive but good. 3 entrees and 4 soups cost $40 but the portions were huge. I would rather pay a bit less and get a normal sized portion. The sauces tasted a bit better than most Chinese food places and the veggies were all nice and fresh. I liked the crispyness of the eggroll but it was all cabbage inside. Some pork or shrimp would have been nice. The hot and sour soup could use some more mushrooms too. Overall still 4 stars and I will go back but plan to have leftovers. read more

I have tried the sesame chicken, moo goo gai pan, fried rice, egg roll, and crab rangoons; all of which was good. The only complaint I have is that the fried rice tastes better if you order the side rather than change your steamed rice to fried rice for some reason. read more
