The Thai basil leaves were absolutely ginormous, and they gave us plenty of them alongside very fresh limes, which I appreciated. The bowl itself came loaded with meat--they definitely weren't skimping to save money here. The meat-to-noodle ratio felt great, and every bite actually had substance instead of leaving me fishing around for toppings. As for the broth, I landed somewhere in the middle. It wasn't quite as clear or light as I personally prefer, leaning toward a fattier, milkier undertone that almost reminded me of a Vietnamese pho take on tonkotsu. The flavor itself was undeniably very good, but the richness may have been a bit too much for me personally. One way I usually judge how much I love a pho broth is whether I want to sip the bowl down to the very end, and this one wasn't quite light enough for me to want to do that. I've had richer and deeper pho flavors elsewhere, but I still appreciated the flavor profile here and could absolutely see why this place is so popular. It feels hearty, comforting, and satisfying in a way that clearly resonates with many people. Despite how packed the restaurant was, the atmosphere ended up being surprisingly pleasant. Service moved very quickly, which honestly impressed me given how busy everything felt. Even with the crowd, I didn't dislike the spacing or setup at all--the restaurant still felt comfortable, and the sound of people enjoying their food all around added to the lively, welcoming energy rather than making it feel overwhelming. Not sure why I haven't rated this place yet because I have been here so very many times. It is probably my favorite pho place in town. It's just so clean. The broth is so clean. We waited for ~30 min since we had 7+ people. -There's a bunch of Asian people eating here. -The pho resembles my mom's homemade pho. It hit the spot. From the photo I took, you can see that the broth is very clear, which generally indicates the level of care they took to prepare it. I also tried the wings, which I thought were very flavorful, but perhaps a bit too sweet for my taste with the Garlic sauce. Of course they are a good contrast to the pho, I just think in general, I don't prefer sweet chicken sauces. Another thing to mention is that they've got their efficiency down to a science. This is deemed by many to be the best pho in Austin. My Viet friends and friends of friends have endorsed it. I have grown fond of pho over the recent years, but this one was so disappointing for me. I do hope I just ordered the wrong type of pho, although the service at the end was so bizarre that I was left feeling unsettled about it. They are very good at moving their line though and seating people efficiently. We were seated at a long table with other customers, which is a nice strategy to save space. I prefer eating cooked meat, so I was wary of ordering the eye round steak, which makes up half of the pho options. My friend recommended that I get the well done flank instead. It was unfortunate that there is no option between raw/undercooked and well done. I was worried it would be difficult to chew, and it was indeed extremely difficult to eat. I experienced prolonged moments of silent terror when some of the meat went down my throat, but I couldn't chew it off, so the rest was still in my mouth. I was choking silently, but thankfully I survived. The stringy meat aside, the pho just didn't have much of a flavour to it. I really can't see what the hype is about. My friend liked it though, and he described it as "one step above mid." Although I felt like I was lowkey dying from the meat, things were overall not too bad until the server came for us to pay. She asked us if we were together or separate, and we said separate. She said okay and chose my friend's individual order to pay on the device. Then she left and never came back. We were waiting for quite a while, realized she would never come back, then my friend started toggling around to choose our other orders so we could pay. Came for lunch on a Sunday afternoon with a party of 11 around 1pm and had to wait about an hour before we could get seated. The restaurant shares an open-ish layout with a boba shop so we were able to wait inside the boba shop, away from the heat, while we wait for our table. Once we sat down, we were able to order quickly and the food arrived pretty quickly. Everyone ordered their own pho and we got some summer rolls and spring rolls to share, as well as 2 of the friend rice. Everything was delicious and we ate it all. Plenty of parking spots around the building. Plenty of tables inside. But always bussin so expect a wait unless you come at odd hours. Pho Phong Luu is neighbors with HK Tea. It's easy to traverse from one side to the other through the gap in the separating wall between them. Ordered a Combination Pho and their Special Bahn Mi to go. Was ready in a jiffy (less than 10 minutes) at 10:30am in the morning. Packaging: The pho came in three separate containers. Meat and noodles came in a plastic bowl, but the raw beef slices wrapped in plastic wrap were hiding underneath just above the noodles. So if you get takeout from here, it'll be good to double check before pouring the broth over. I do appreciate the wrapping of the raw sliced beef, as it prevents oxidation and getting blood on the other items. But I would place that beef on the top layer rather than the bottom so that customers are aware of the plastic wrap. I ended up transferring the contents to a ceramic bowl. The broth came in a a separate plastic container, not piping hot to avoid diffusion of any non-polymerized material into the liquid. Opening the container, there was a strong smell of star anise. I dumped the broth into a pot to heat it up. The bean sprouts, basil, and sliced jalapeños came in a separate baggie. Once the broth was ready, I poured it over the other ingredients, then added in the veggies. I opted to not add the Sriracha or Hoisin sauce (which are provided in little packets). The broth was on the lighter side, but still had a wonderful flavorful. It was not an intense dark brown beefy flavor, but a really good savory essence filled with more spices, herbs, and onions. The lengthy jalapeño slices lent a hint of spiciness. The various beef cuts contained in the dish also had very nice savory flavors (perhaps even more so than the broth!). In contrast, the tendon and tripe were less flavorful than the broth, but on the plus side they were soft and not chewy. The rice noodles. I believe their rice noodles are pre-packaged, not freshly made. Their noodles were definitely almost soft enough that if I wasn't paying close attention I might believe they were fresh rice noodles. Regardless of whether they were fresh or pre-packaged, the noodles did their job. Bahn Mi: Glorious, very slight sweetness, well-balanced savoriness. I'm definitely going to order this another time. The pickled radish, pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro, and bread become a platform for elevating meat fillings within. This place is genuinely legit and authentically Vietnamese. My Vietnamese wife and family have told me so many great things about it that I'm glad I finally tried it out. I ordered pho with meatballs and rare steak, opting for the meats and cuts I enjoy eating the most. My food was delivered to my table within 5 minutes, in hot, tasty pho broth that may be my favorite. The vegetables were all fresh. I added some bean sprouts and basil to my pho and pushed them into the soup to cook them. The noodles and meats were all well-cooked and tasted delicious. I also had the opportunity to try their famous fried chicken wings dunked with their house-made fish sauce. The crispy chicken wings had a unique flavor, unlike any other chicken wings I've tried elsewhere. I love how they added their Vietnamese spin to these wings with the fish sauce, a staple in Vietnamese cooking. It was quiet inside when we went, and we had great conversations. The server, who happened to be the owner, took our order and brought us our food. She provided terrific customer service that I wish other restaurant owners could replicate. Amazing pho. Wait time gets long on the weekends starting around 12:30-1. There's a boba shop connected so you can grab a drink while you wait. I order the pho tai bo vien (eye round steak and meat balls) I really enjoy the meatballs here. We have tried a side of the fatty oil with our pho. Good but not something I get every time. read more

I've been to the OG location and now their newer location in North East Austin. They get busy at lunch so it's best to come here before 11:30 on the weekday. They really work hard to get people in the restaurant and if you are dining solo they can probably fit you in a table with others - if they are packed. The pho here is just good. The broth has a nice balance and you can even add a shot of the fatty oil from the beef! The noodles are fresh and the herbs too. I normally get the Dac Biet with a little bit of everything - the meats are just better quality and don't taste like they've been sitting around too long. Price point is average for a pho house and considering the quality it's probably a deal too. Also you get a bottle of water too! There's a boba shop next door to satisfy your sweet tooth here. Don't be disappointed if there isn't any parking out front, there is a bigger lot out back to the side. read more
