After swearing several years ago I would never get 'to go' food here ever again, I thought how bad could it be to just get a quick and close to home dinner? Boy was I wrong!! Once I opened the containers I remembered why I quit coming here. Everything was swimming in sauce!! When ordering, I purposely asked which beef entree was crispy deep fried (Szechuan beef), so I ordered the Szechuan beef and Kung Pao tofu. Why they bother to fry either is a mystery as both orders were mushy and filled to the brim with bland sauce. The tofu dish included carrots, peanuts, way too many water chestnuts, and was so tasteless I had to add my own fish sauce, sesame oil, and garlic just to eat the few bites I did eat. The peanuts were a waste as they were soft after soaking in the sauce. Ordering the fried Kung Pao tofu was an unfortunate afterthought as I really just wanted the crispy Szechuan beef, but you would never have known either was fried or the beef even beef for that matter. The worse part of this sad story is that for the two entrees and a container of cheap white rice I paid $26. TWENTY SIX DOLLARS! Not even a cup of soup! I don't ever have enough money to throw around so I hope someday to forget all about the money I wasted and the food I threw out. What a painful lesson especially when I think of all the delicious restaurants I could have ordered from while spending that amount of money (AA, Tornado Daves, Banana Hut, etc.) If you're craving Chinese food, my suggestion is to go to Chins. That is my normal 'go to' for Chinese takeout. There I get 2 lunches to go which include soup, rice, and the entree for $17 and I get at least 4 meals out of them. read more

The first time I tried this place the take out was pretty good. However, very recently, I went at about 430 PM on a Sunday and the food was disappointing. The beef was somewhat grisly and the lemon chicken had very little flavor. The price was OK, but I guess this is the old adage, you get what you pay for. read more

Yummy food, bad service. After driving all day to get to Eureka my friend and I decided on Chinese. I remember that Hunans was good and we went there. After being hurried to out table we ordered, food came out and were rushed out of the place. Im not sure why, since only us and another larger party were there. Good was great. I'm just not impressed with the quality of the food lately, I've heard that they changed cooks several months ago so that may be the source of the issue. The food just tasted kind of... meh. JUST BADDD. The SWEET & SOUR PORK was actully like chicken nuggets....no sauce..no pineapple..no onions..with a boul of red sweet stuff that was supposted to be the sauce...the kung poa chicken suppossed to be spicy, all we got was a container of half cooked carrots and 3 peanuts...no kidding 3 peanuts and NO SPICINESS...NO MEAT...NOTHING BUT CARROTS..NEVER AGAIN...NEED TO JUST CLOSE IF THEY KEEP SERVING SLOP LIKE THIS. Have been going to hunans for over 10 years. I can't remember any bad experiences. Food is great. Prices are good I would go as far as saying it's the best oriental food in Eureka overall. Must try triple delight and prawns in chile brown sauce (not on menu but they'll make it for you). read more

Literally the WORST Chinese food ever!!! The entire family felt the same, no flavor at all! We ended up just throwing it in the trash.

This place is much like Lui's but they cook their veggies a bit more raw so they are crisper and the soups are not as salty. What makes the difference between the two in dinning experience though is Lui's servers are very hospitable and quick while Hunan's are mixed. The female server is nice at Hunan but the male waiter always messes with me. All three times he has given me the empression he either doesn't like me or doesn't want me there. He does this thing where he hands me the menu but when I go to grab it he pulles it away from my hand turning away then turns back and lets me take the menu. So this place is great for take out but Lui's is better in service. read more

Really the best Chinese chicken salad in town. This place is always quick - and reasonably priced. There may be some valid criticism that many of the sauces taste alike, but my family loves their brocolli beef and kung pao chicken. The place is clean - and well located in Henderson Center. So, I popped in here with friends on a Saturday night and it definitely was meh. Neither the food nor the service was worth writing home about ... But I will write my experience here. Service: I ordered the special, and they were out, so I ordered something else from the menu, with one substitution. I will say the waiter was very good about offering me the substitution (I don't eat carrots so when I asked for them to be omitted, he offered to add in broccoli instead, this was unexpected, but appreciated.) We waited a reasonable time for the entrees to be brought to the table, so no complaints there. However, after the meal was brought to the table, he did not return to the table again to refill water glasses which were empty when he brought the entrees. If this was a busy time, I could understand, but there were only two other tables being served when we walked in and they had left by the time our meal was served. Only one other table was occupied when we left... I watched the waiter go to this last table, without a second glance in our direction, exponentially more times than he was at our table through our entire visit. When we asked for to go containers, he brought one small sandwich sized container, and we had to flag him down on his way back from the other table ask for a second container. Food: -and the need to ask for a to-go container in the first place- All three of us ordered different items and my friends received their entrees several minutes after mine was delivered to the table. The first thing I noticed was that my first bite of broccoli was cold. All the broccoli was cold. The meat, as a result of being mixed with cold broccoli was tepid and the sauce was very runny with very little flavor... Decided I would just take it home and heat it myself later..adding some thickener for the sauce when I did because I do not send food back to the kitchen. Hence request for food container. The server was pleasant , but other than that the food was not freshly prepared . I love the honey walnut prawns in the arcata location , but the ones done in eureka are terribly over cooked and the walnuts looked like they came out of a jar . The other entrees were pre prepared earlier then microwaved to death and hoisin sauce was poured over them straight out of the bottle ... I swear I thought about the show restaurant impossible ... I like Hunan. They are consistent. Consistently good. All the dishes are well seasoned with generous proportions. Many vegetarian options and some unique things like sizzling plate dishes. Like their egg rolls, rice dishes and many spicy offerings. Friendly staff at the Henderson center. A local staple. read more

Don't waste your money. Ordered take out king poa chicken, crab cheese puffs, and wonton soup. The kung poa chicken was filled over halfway with barely cooked, roughly chopped carrots, some whole peanuts, and a thin flavorless sauce with a sadly small portion of chicken. Crab cheese puffs were mostly fried wonton with little stuffing. Wonton soup had watery broth and was just plain. Don't order take out from here. I won't be going back. read more

WORST RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE...My friend and I WERE looking forward to our meal; until we actually began eating it. We ordered 2 appetizers and 3 entrées. The ONLY thing we found palatable were the crab cheese puffs and those had ZERO crab. They should call them, deep fried cream cheese triangles. The bbq sliced pork appetizers SHOULD be called NOT bbq'd sliced soles o my shoes! The sweet and sour pork came with sauce ON THE SIDE and there wasn't one single piece of pineapple! WTH?! The tofu chili brown sauce was a complete fail also. I don't know why the waiter even asked if we wanted it EXTRA spicy because there was NO spice to begin with. Though there were red chili's present..apparently they were all frauds because there was ZERO heat. The szechuan prawns were completely without flavor also. All in all this meal SUCKED. If I could give it 0 stars I would. I used to get takeout from Hunan a lot and thought the reviews were just odd incidents. But, I have learned that it is under new ownership and it is now terrible. The wonton soup was the worst I have ever eaten. It tasted like hot water. And they no longer put pork in their wonton soup. The beef and broccoli should be called broccoli with very little beef, since there is very little beef. Avoid this place you will only be disappointed. read more

Hunan in Arcata is amazing. However the one in Eureka was terrible. My Husband thought the chicken tasted off and my food was sat in a pile of sauce that looked more like gelatin...gross. I had the absolute worst experience, I got takeout and my noodles were dry, burnt, and in one giant glob. They were horrible tasting with absolutely no kind of moisture whatsoever. I was upset that i ordered the fried won tons and rather than a fried won ton with all the yummy stuff on the inside I got 12 flat fried pieces of.....well nothing. Go figure since they were only about $2 for 12. The chicken with broccoli was mainly broccoli with a few, literally only a few pieces of chicken. The last time we got take out from Hunan, it was ... less than stellar. I'm happy to say that a few years later, the food has gotten light years better. We picked up szechuan chicken, beef, mushu chicken, veggie egg foo young, and I can say that it was some of the best Chinese I've had in Eureka in a long wile. The egg foo young was /great/, we were really impressed with it. Veggies were well cooked, but not mushy, everything had a good amount of flavor, and it was ready quick. We went in around 6:45pm and there were only two other ladies there. Looking forward to going back! My wife and I ordered takeout from Hunan tonight, and it was terrible. We have lived nearby for almost 13 years, and used to frequent this restaurant quite often. However, we have only eaten there a few times in the past several years as both the service and food was going slowly and steadily downhill. It started with the vegetables. They used to use fresh vegetables, but then they started using pre-packaged and/or pre-cut vegetables. Then we noticed they started getting stingy on their use of shrimp and other seafood in the seafood entrees and soups. And the shrimp started getting smaller and the breaded entrees started getting "breadier." Having not eaten there for at least a year and a half, we decided to give it another try. Big mistake. We ordered mu shu shrimp, potstickers, mandarin chicken, szechuan beef and sizzling rice soup. The mu shu was pretty bland, as was the sauce, and it had just a few tiny shrimp. The potstickers were basically dough dumplings. I can't even say what they were exactly, just big lumps of dough without any flavor. I have never not liked a potsticker, but this was a first. Terrible. The mandarin chicken had suprisingly decent vegetables, but the chicken was not tender like it used to be. The szechuan beef was another mystery. While the flavor was okay, it simply consisted of huge pieces of fried dough/cornstarch with the same brown sauce they use for everything. I've never had szechuan beef that was breaded like that, and there was actually no beef to be found. Where's the beef? In fact, the only meat we could find in the entire dish was a chicken wing, deep fried in the same dough. My wife thought the wing was actually the best part of a meal that we didn't order! The sizzling rice soup was mostly broth and cabbage with very little of the "good stuff." On top of all that, the food wasn not ready for almost a half hour when it was only about 10 minutes for takeout in the old days. Perhaps weirdest of all was the fact that, even though our order wasn't ready when we got there to pick it up, most of it was lukewarm and even cool by the time we got it home just a few minutes later. It obviously hadn't just gotten done being cooked. All in all another bad experience at this once good restaurant. We will not be back unless we see some sign that the ownership has changed. Bottom line ... If fried dough balls and cornstarch patties are your thing, you'll love this place. read more
