We went in for lunch last week. The place was empty except for two other groups. Maybe we should have gone during dinner time, as I had high hopes for this establishment from all the reviews on here. We had just finished a killer workout and were looking forward to getting some chicken and veggies that we didn't have to make ourselves. Good- It's close to my home, conveniently located in the Academy and Big Lots parking lot, right off of Loop 336 in Conroe. The menu selection is large and they have well priced lunch options. We tried two of their lunch specials. I had the Triple Delight shrimp, chicken, and beef, except I had them hold the beef and add extra chicken. My husband had the Kung Po Chicken. Sadly, mine arrived and the flavor was bland, the rice wasn't fresh, but I will say the veggies were perfectly cooked. I needed the sauce to be banging and it certainly was NOT! My husband wasn't impressed with his dish either. He said it was edible, but not something he would come running back for again. We tried both of their soups and they were decent. Nothing to write home about. The spring rolls that came with were the best part of our meal. They were crispy, delish, and the veggies were crunchy on the inside, just how I like them. Bad- Service was very lack luster. Maybe it's because we were one of the few patrons. I would think it would be the other way around, but I had to get my own doggie bags and hot sauce because no one came back to check on us the entire meal. Ugly- Nothing to report just wished my experience had been better as we don't currently have a "go to" Chinese restaurant. read more

I am surprised this restaurant doesn't show a better rating. The food we had--chicken and vegetables and lemon chicken--was probably the best we've ever had and, believe me, we have visited a vast number of Asian restaurants. We are sorry we waited so long to try this place. The service was excellent in every regard. The preparation of the chicken and vegetable dish was sheer perfection; when the chicken is properly velveted and the vegetables perfectly crisp-tender, you know that the cooks know what they're doing. The lemon chicken was accompanied by a large bowl of fresh lemon sauce, just in case you might want some extra; we did, and it was delicious and appreciated. The restaurant has been around for quite a while (now I know why), and it could use a little sprucing up; for example, the carpet is well-traveled and needs some attention. That doesn't detract from the food, however; we can't wait to go back. read more

My husband ordered the curry shrimp. He likes spicy food, however, it was do spicy, he broke out in bumps on the inside of his mouth. I ordered the General tso and it was pretty spicy. I drank 3 glasses of tea. read more

Decided to take my daughter for a lunch date here and it did not disappoint. Ordered the crab puffs and she got the hot & sour soup and I got the wonton. I liked that the broth was clear in the wonton. So many places now it is totally yellow and grosses me out. The crab puffs were great and the sweet and sour sauce wasn't overpowering. She wasn't a fan of the soup but ate most of it. It was nicer than many of the local spots and she enjoyed that. The atmosphere was quiet and we enjoyed great service. She ordered the mongolian beef and I got beef and broccoli. We could have shared one! It was too big for the both of us. We didn't care for the egg rolls. The crunch was too thin. I've been turned off by China Delight so I finally tried Hunan Village. It's worth the extra few bucks for the quality. The Hot & Sour Soup was actually so good I burned my mouth chugging it down. Egg/Spring Rolls were terrible. Basically wrapped and fried cabbage, no pork or seasoning. Crab puffs had a nice sweet cream cheese filling. Kung Po (Pao) Beef was tasty and filled with plenty of meat. They just didn't tenderize it enough for me personally. And what's with restaurants not throwing the peanuts in the wok and stir-frying with the meal??? Instead, just put on top after the Kung Pao is plated. Looks and tastes cheap & lazy. Food was not terrible. Could not for the life of me recommend thier hot and sour soup it was the worste ive ever had. Ordered family meal for two on deliverky. Garlic chicken needs ti be labeled spicy online. Really hot garlic oil but i like spicy so tasted great. Beef and brocolli was under seasoned and just bland. Fried rice was great. If food wasnt okay id give them one star. Delivery guy handed me oozing brown bag. Oil and sauce was covering EVERYTHING in the bad. Had to lay towels down on table to wipe off containers before plating our food. Really really sloppy. Even spoke to manager about how messy and wet everything was. I can say the delivery maybe was a one off but food wasnt that great for $30 wouldnt go back to try again read more

Very tasty and delicious. Waiter was very pleasant. Ambiance is very nice and clean feeling. Will be our new go -to place. Anxious to go back and try a different dish. My family has eaten at Hunan Village for years and always were satisfied. But over four visits in the last year the food has been disappointing. Items ordered and paid for that didn't show up and meats made of gristle and blobs of breading. Some pieces of our last Sweet and Sour Supreme were NOTHING but blobs of breading. After 25 years, this restaurant has been sold to new owner and boy has it changed. We first walked in and noticed a bunch of new people at the front of the house. Thankfully, Ulysses, a wonderful professional waiter, was still working here. He was the highlight of our meal. Portions are smaller, food is greasier, taste is mediocre and quite frankly, you notice all the shortcuts they are taking. Table cloths weren't replaced and were simply wiped down. Drinks were in plastic. Lightbulbs burned out in the bathroom. Music was loud. The new owners seem to be running on the motto "cheaper is better". I'd expect to see sushi or a buffet show up soon. I won't be back. Cheaper is better is not the mantra I want to see applied to my food. I'll head down to Kit's other restaurant (Red Phoenix) in The Woodlands. *plays taps* read more

This locally owned Conroe restaurant is a favorite of our family's. We've been dining here for more than twenty-five years. The owner, Kit, knows many of us by name. She also owns Red Phoenix (my favorite of the three) on 242 in College Park and Red Ginger near Loop 336 and 105 in Conroe. Recommendations include most shrimp and chicken dishes. Generally, they have large shrimp that are perfectly cooked. Kit's restaurants are clean and the food is consistent. Special requests are never a problem. Spicy crispy shrimp and sesame dishes are my favorites. Spicy crispy shrimp has large, lightly battered prawn with a spicy tomato sauce drizzled over them on a bed of stir fried onions. This dish has always been perfect. Zucchini is consistently cooked just right, regardless of what dish it is served with. I noticed many interesting new additions to their appetizer and dinner menus. However, I stayed with an old favorite, Crispy Hunan Chicken, extra spicy. This did the trick. As it was my Father's birthday, the waitstaff brought out fried bananas sprinkled with sugar. Dad's fried banana had a candle on it and they sang "Happy Birthday". Unfortunately, on our last visit the spring rolls were greasy and chewy. There are other restaurants I'd rather eat at (after Sushi and Vietnamese, Chinese doesn't cut it anymore); however, when in Conroe, there are many very good options here and the service is always good. Update: Kit has upgraded the Spring Rolls. The new and improved spring rolls are bigger, more cabbage and less greasy. Wonderful improvement. read more

The food is consistently good here, we get takeout every couple of months or so. The one thing that annoys me though is that the fried rice which comes with the entree only has egg in it. I like the fried rice to have vegetables, especially if the entree is something like sesame chicken or sweet & sour shrimp that doesn't otherwise have any. Instead of charging a little extra for vegetables in your accompanying fried rice, they make you buy a whole separate order of vegetable fried rice. Then the rice that came with the entree is wasted. Maybe I shouldn't care because it's only rice, but still. They could actually be more profitable if they just charged an extra dollar or so for veggies in your side of fried rice instead of requiring the additional separate order. read more

I have several groups of friends who choose Hunan Village regularly! One of the things I especially like about the food is that if the dish is normally spicy, you can get it mild. As I age, I am finding that important! I also love the fact that they can accommodate large groups. One Sunday we showed up with 24 people, and they managed to move tables around so that we could all eat together. The most amazing thing is that you can actually carry on a conversation at your table and hear others in your party. (To be honest, we couldn't hear everyone at the table when there were 24 of us, but I don't believe that would have been possible anywhere!) My two favorite dishes are the Honey Walnut (mild version) and the Lemon Chicken. read more

Our waiter wasn't really very friendly...I asked him how the shredded pork with garlic sauce was and he snarled his nose and said I can tell you I like it but if you don't there's nothing I can do. My family has been eating here for close to twenty years and we always get the same exact dish: Crispy Chicken Hunan Style Gourmet Dinner (you might want to share it with someone, as the portions are on the larger side) Trust me, there is no need to even try anything else. We have eaten here more than a dozen times and never had a bad meal. Carry out is quick and easy. I first ate here ten years ago before we lived this far up 45 and liked it then. I remember eating at Hunan Village some years back and remembering it to be good. Mind you, it was in the late 90s, early 00s. Today I called in an order to be delivered and was put on hold. I was still on hold when I walked in the restaurant. I place my order and paid for it because I was needing it delivered to a hospital that doesn't allow food from outside to be brought in, but does allow delivery. The food arrived in about 30 minutes which isn't too long in my opinion. The food; another story. It was absolutely horrible. From Sweet and Sour Chicken to the Triple Delight to Shrimp Fred Rice. The Triple D vegetables were an over stir fried mess. The Beef, Shrimp and Chicken came with a good proportion of the three, but it was as if the dish had no taste. Sweet and Sour Chicken had a very bitter tasting tempura batter and the Shrimp Fried Rice again, really had no taste. For $38.00, I will purchase from another vendor to deliver next time. read more

Not any better than the last time I was there years ago. Shrimp with Garlic sauce was good, hot, and plentiful but where's the garlic? Paid extra for fried rice but couldn't eat much of it as it came to the table barely warm. Drink waiter messed up two glasses of water and unsweet tea. Order taker brought out one water and sweet tea. They apologized and made it right but really, there were only two other tables occupied. Not recommended. Absolutely no flavor in any of the dishes (ordered orange chicken, cashew shrimp, Hunan noodles, fried rice, and fried spring rolls). They all had the type of bland flavor that leaves you regretting ordering it, I thought there'd at least be hope in the orange chicken, but sadly there was no tang nor orangey flavor... maybe it was just a bad night but left us very disappointed and unlikely to return to test that theory. read more

I sent it back and ordered something different and it came out with mushrooms on it well I have a food allergy to mushrooms so I sent it back and they just picked out the mushrooms and brought it back out well they missed one or two of them !!! I've only lived in Conroe for a few months and having been trying to find non chain restaurants that have either delivery or take out. I was stoked to find this place as it's super close to my house. Picked up a to go order last night, and I was not disappointed. The place looked pretty nice inside, definitely clean, and a lot more comfortable than some of the other chinese establishments I've been to in the area. The lady behind the counter was super nice when I picked up the food. Prices are definitely reasonable. I was delighted when I got home and opened up my yummy lemon chicken. The batter was nice and light and they portion was HUGE. The lemon sauce is your typical lemon sauce you'd find at most chinese restaurants. The fried rice was done perfectly as well. I ate every last bite. I think I found my new go-to take out spot in Conroe! read more
