L35 Fried Rice (Chicken, Pork, Shrimp or Combo)
    Sophia V.

My family regularly gets takeout from Chef Chan's and we love it! The food is ready pretty quickly and it's always super tasty. Spicy dishes have just the right amount of heat. And the fried rice is bomb! If the place doesn't look full when you're passing by, don't be deceived. Definitely recommend people try it out. It's so good that I crave it when we haven't ordered in a while.

Hot and sour. Very small. No crunchy won ton pieces to go with.

Ok, after a long absence I gave this place another try. Incredibly disappointed. Lunch menu. Why. Hot and sour soup although very good in taste is a very small portion. See pic. General Tso Chicken - decent portion but lukewarm warm at best. Not spicy at all. Fried rice - luke warm at best Egg roll - nothing worse than a cold egg roll. To say I was disappointed is an understatement as I really wanted to enjoy this meal. I guessed "if" I wanted to take it home and reheat it I could have but this was supposed very a in house seated meal. I mentioned all of this to the staff and was given the bill with no apologies or offer to even heat it up. Plus, $3.00 for "A Can" of Diet Coke .. seriously???

Have heard a lot about the original Chef Chan's in foodie groups, so when I heard the original owner was opening his own place after a few years absence, I knew I had to hurry in. We dropped by today for lunch and found a small establishment sandwiched in between crepes and a Mexican place. We were greeted immediately as we entered and guided to a corner table. The service here was outstanding with everything from menus to drinks and entrees brought quickly to the table. And the entrees, well just yum! I had Chef Chan's beef and it was crispy and made to order. When I had a few morsels left, a takeout box miraculously appeared along with sage advice from Lily, Chef Chan's daughter that I consider reheating with a toaster oven rather than a microwave to maintain the yummy crisp. The quality of product here is just better than your typical Chinese takeout, fresh and made to order with first class ingredients, you just can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Can't wait to go back. So glad you returned to The Woodlands dining scene

*NEW* Orange Chicken (recipe is from the new chef/owner) NOT the original Chef Chans orange chicken

It's truly the end of an era. After more than 30 years of loving Chef Chan's--especially their iconic orange chicken--and faithfully following them to their new location, we've learned that the chef has retired. A member of the waitstaff confirmed the news: the restaurant is now under new ownership, with the new owner bringing his own recipes. Unfortunately, the orange chicken, once a sweet, crunchy delight, is no longer the same--it's now spongy and lacks the magic that made it so special. While the cheese puffs and curry fried wontons remain unchanged and delicious, and the house special fried rice was decent, the orange chicken was truly the star of the menu. Its absence leaves a void that simply cannot be filled. We wish the new chef the best, but sadly, Chef Chan's is not the same for us anymore, and we won't be returning. It's a sad day for long-time fans like us, as a cherished culinary gem is now gone forever. PLEASE BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL ORANGE CHICKEN...PLEASE!

Why 4 stars? Because this was one of the better Chinese spots in the area that we've tried. --- --- --- We moved to the area about a year and a half ago and have yet to find a Chinese restaurant as good as the one we used to visit frequently when we lived in Tampa. While one visit here definitely did not make us forget about the Tampa spot, I definitely think Chef Chan's has the potential to become our go-to for Chinese. My wife was nearby, so I placed a pickup order that she brought home. Despite that, our beef lo mein, pork fried rice and meat stuffed fried wonton curry were all enjoyable, but probably a step or so down from the aforementioned mecca. There are tons of appealing menu items that I want to try here and we will definitely return in the future to make our way through the menu.

Absolutely outstanding! This restaurant is easily one of the top Chinese places I have ever dined at. The staff is incredibly efficient and the food is phenomenal. I am beyond impressed by the quality and taste of the food. Will definitely be coming back!

    Orange chicken & fried rice

I checked out a couple of lunch specials here Pretty standard food here. Orange chicken & general TSO chicken. Sauces were thing & generous coating on the chicken both sweet, not spicy at all. Chicken was standard, it wasn't super tender or juicy or anything, just chicken. The price is a bit on the high side for the portion. The fried rice is just tossed in soy sauce, not 1 veggie or onion, very cheaply made. The egg drop soup standard also, bland, just a nice comfort soup. So if your just looking for a standard Chinese food fix quick then give them a try. If you are looking for outstanding Chinese, keep looking.

Today, I dined in at Chef Chan's Original Restaurant located at the Indian Springs location. This was my first time eating there. My benchmark meal in comparison of Chinese cuisine is by trying their General TSO's Chicken, egg drop soup, and egg roll with unsweetened ice tea. The TSO's Chicken was prepared with a sweet and sour sauce that included peppers but the sweetness of the sauce was not typical for the traditional General TSO's Chicken sauce which is normally more spicy than sweet and is presented in a savory brownish colored sauce. This dish included a sauce that was typically served on sweet and sour pork or chicken. Deep red in color. The chicken was cooked delightfully and crispy and was tender. The sweetness of the sauce took away from the flavor of the chicken and the sauce sweetness dominated any spices that were added such as the red peppers. The egg roll was fresh and crispy but it was primarily filled with cabbage and little else. I only took one bite and found it lacking in flavor other than cabbage. The fried rice was unremarkable, the iced tea was fresh and flavorful. The service was excellent and the restaurant was very clean, friendly, and comfortable. I tipped 20%. If I return again I will have to try some other dish. I have to pass on the General TSO's Chicken.

Not me, that's for sure, but after a long day this proved to be an incredibly welcome dinner! The soup dumplings were plump and savory. The Kung pao Brussels sprouts slightly sweet and sour, and the spicy, crispy, chicken...well it'll numb your mouth, and it will be worth it. Somehow they've found the sweet spot (not literally) by creating that classic Sichuan tongue numbing spice, without creating a spicy dish per se. Apart from the numbness, the dish reads more savory than anything else. I do wish the dumplings came with either dumpling sauce, chili crunch or both, and that the crispy spicy chicken came with something to coat the rice (it's a bit dry with steamed rice alone), but all and all, I enjoyed everything I ordered and will certainly be returning for the full dine-in experience.

And their other menu items are fire as well! We went on a Sunday late evening. We had a 9 pm airport pickup at IAH so it was a perfect opportunity to grab a spectacular dinner and make the 30+ minute drive out to IAH totally worth it. Parking lot wasn't too full so that wasn't an issue. While the neighborhood ain't River Oaks luxury, it ain't too scary either. We kept it simple - ordered a whole duck and Bamboo House Special Noodle with Beef. This place ain't cheap but the food is worth every penny. It was very busy that evening so it's not a well-kept secret but also proves that eventually, Houstonians will figure out where the good food is. The duck was near perfect. They serve the duck with the pancakes (as opposed to the buns like at Arco) which is my preference. The soup that comes with it was also extremely flavorful. And the house special noodles with beef - oh my. I swear it's just one really long noodle so you may be frustrated trying to divvy up the family style bowl, but the labor is worth it. So good... Can't wait for my next airport run so I can sneak in a lunch or dinner at this place. So many other menu items I want to try!

I had previously visited the now closed Bamboo House on Westheimer and I remember being impressed by the food. I had to make an airport run and decided that it would be perfect timing to stop by this location. I highly recommend ordering the duck ahead of time, but we were lucky enough to snag one of the last ducks when we arrived around 7 pm on a Sunday evening. The waitress was super friendly and upbeat and the restaurant is older but well maintained. You can see where the food is being prepared/cooked and you can see ducks being cooked/warmed behind a glass window. The duck was absolutely spectacular with the perfect seasoned and tender meat accompanied by well rendered crispy skin. I love how the pancakes are paper thin and pair well with the scrumptious duck and other toppings. They also provide sugar and plum sauce as additional toppings which I thought was interesting but not my cup of tea. The duck soup was extremely flavorful and full bodied and went well with the duck. The noodles were also amazing with likely hand pulled noodles served with an abundance of tender beef and vegetables with a little Sichuan kick. I was intrigued by a strawberry chicken dish that I saw on the menu and I plan to try it the time. My diagnosis: hands down the best Peking duck in the greater Houston area!

The food overall was flavorful and fresh. The noodles were cooked well and had a nice balance of sauce without being too heavy. The sweet & sour pork had that classic crispy texture with a bold sauce. The crab cheese puffs were decent crispy on the outside and creamy inside but I do wish they had a little more crab flavor to really elevate them. One small detail I loved: the to-go bags. I ordered the 3 Savory Pepper Chicken, sautéed bok choy, and Shredded Pork with Baby Bamboo. The 3 Savory Pepper Chicken has the perfect "mala" flavor you expect in so many Sichuan-style dishes - hot and numbing with excellent flavor. The bok choy was cooked to just the right texture, and the shredded pork was a great choice, especially for those who do not want spicy flavor. The service last night was excellent! There are plenty of other Chinese restaurants in Katy Asia Town with good food & better service.

Get the eggplant! Been obsessed with Sichuan food lately,…read moreand my friend recommended this place. I think we may have went on an off day because I have tried takeout form this place that was delicious, but on this day the food wasn't my favorite. We did overall enjoyed our experience and time and I would recommend giving this place a try! We ordered a total of 5 dishes and everything seemed very authentic to Sichuan cooking. With Sichuan cuisine though, a lot of the food will be on the oily side, so keep that in mind. - Eggplant In Spicy Sauce (5/5): Definitely order this dish! You can tell the eggplant was prepared well because it retained its beautiful purple color and luscious shape. The flavor was sweet and savory seeped well into the eggplant. My only comment would be that there wasn't a strong garlic flavor, but it was still so tasty I think it deserved that 5/5! - Mapo Tofu (2.5/5): I came here specifically for the mapo tofu but was left a bit disappointed. The flavor was pretty good and had that strong Sichuan pepper spice that lingers after a while. My issue with the tofu was the consistency of the sauce. I found it to be very thick and clumpy in an unpleasant way, almost like eating little gelatin pieces. I would probably come back to try it again just in case this was a bad batch, but it's hard to compete with wanna boa's mapo tofu. - Spicy and Crispy Chicken (4/5): Pretty juicy and crispy chicken with a slight kick. I love anything fried chicken so I did enjoy this dish but it was pretty standard and there wasn't much to write about. - Red Oil Dumplings (3/5): Pretty standard oil dumplings. They weren't really spicy which would be good for people who can't handle spice. I think I would've liked a bit more meat filling but overall not bad. - Dan Dan Noodles (3/5): I loved the texture of the noodles but I found the sauce to be kinda slippery which made it hard adhere to the noodles. I also thought the flavor could've been a bit stronger. Service/Ambiance: the interior of this place was super cute, especially the upstairs area. I loved the dim lighting and tiny table lamps which gave this place a cozy romantic feeling. The outside was also interesting with an all black exterior and no sign. That might make it hard to notice or find the restaurant, but that did give it a more hidden feeling which was nice. Parking was also abundant and service was great!
