We have been meaning to try this little hole in the wall for a while now. My family loves Chinese food so we decided to give it a go. There was only one other customer in the restaurant when we arrived. We had exceptionable service from the moment we walked in. The place was very clean and quiet and we were treated like royalty. We ordered the combination fried rice and the Kung pow chicken which came with a side of white rice. We also ordered the pu pu platter which my kid loved and it all tasted great! Fancy! The food all tasted amazing. The Kung pao wasn't super spicy which I prefer but my partner would've liked it to be spicier. All in all, we enjoyed our meal and would stop by again. read more

This is a good choice for Hunan and Sichuan-style cooking with some home-style flare. Dishes are slightly made for an American palate from this family restaurant. The attention to detail is excellent which makes dining here very enjoyable. What is notable is that every dish is not overly seasoned nor greasy. This is not a Chinese greasy spoon. Most entrees' pricing pushes fine dining price points at nearly $20. The lunchtime specials are very reasonable giving you a nice variety of flavors. I've been to Hunan yuon once before, and this order was not quite as good but still a very good Chinese option. I got the orange chicken which was really crispy. The chicken was delicious. The sauce was good overall a great dish. I also got the hot and sour soup which wasn't quite sour enough and the flavor wasn't as sharp as I normally like but it was definitely better than a lot of other places out there. I also got the Kung pow chicken and I found that to be pretty bland, even though I asked for it spicy, so that was really the only disappointing dish here. read more

Ok first off never been here before but wanted to try it. We called for pick up, lady was very nice, food was ready for pick up when the time came. The foods taste / flavoring was very average nothing special. I would compare the quality to Panda Express and is over priced for the taste and size portions. The customer service was very friendly. I ordered takeout at 9pm even though they close at 8pm they still served me. I've been waiting to try Hunan Yuan for a while and got the chance tonight. We got hot and sour soup, steamed dumplings, shrimp in lobster sauce and house soft noodles. Soup wasn't hot or sour but had good flavor. Lots of veggies and meat, which Ive never had. Dumplings were pork potstickers, absolutely no flavor. Shrimp with lobster sauce had little flavor and noodles had none. Blandest Chinese food we've ever had! Service was good but on the slow side. Appears to be family run! Love me some Chinese, and I seek out everywhere that serves it up. Unfortunately, Hunan Yuan is a little better than Hell No. Located in a large strip mall, in-between Sushi Oaks and Jeanette's Edelweiss, it's got a Panda on the outside window. That's a good comparison, actually. Panda Express food with a better cuter face. A 30+ year old restaurant evidently was recently remodeled. Who remodeled it? Perhaps a great grandma, it has that kinda feel. Very clean inside, and very nice service -- that's the best thing I have to say about Hunan Yuan. My gf and I were the only diners. We ordered a good sampling. Prices are on the high side ($11-17 per entree), and small portions. Not impressed. 1. Moo Goo Gai Pan [$11.45, 2.5 stars] -- small portion, no pea pods (very common for this dish), chicken was okay but didn't taste fresh. 2. Black Pepper Beef [$12.45, 4.0 stars] -- very good flavor, I liked this dish, king for the night. 3. Shrimp Fried Rice [$9.95, 2.5 stars] -- again, not fresh. Light on the shrimp, oily, and half the portion of anywhere else. 4. White Rice [$free, 1.0 stars] -- very dry, not fresh. Bottom line, this 30+ year place only has 37 reviews? Why? Yelpers aren't going here, and I don't recommend. I do recommend: Sesame Inn (a couple of miles away in NB), Golden Dragon (in nearby Thousand Oaks) or Lakeview Garden Restaurant (Westlake Village). Food is great. They have parking. I have never had a problem, but understand you need to be extra careful not to leave things in the car.

I really love the food here. They are very nice. They also deliver the fried rice is amazing. My husband really likes compa chicken. It is really spicy. The soups are really good. Specially the chicken soup if you have a tummy ache or if you have a cold highly recommended And they have takeout. I really hope this is a good review for the people around the neighborhood. Remember, we don't wanna lose our very good restaurants. This is amazing Chinese food one of the best in town. I hope you be here. Found Hunan Yuan accidentally and sometimes that is the best way to find a gem. Located in an unassuming strip center near my husbands favorite bicycle shop. We stopped for a simple dinner. It was wonderful. Amy, the owner of 29 years, greeted us with with a sweet smile as she served us wonton chips with two sauces. Started with hot & sour soup (vegetable only. I really liked that they ask if you want it with or without pork). The small size was enough for my husband and I to have 1.5 cups of soup each. Then a lemon chicken which was two large moist chicken breasts lightly breaded and sliced on a bed of lettuce with a clear yummy lemon zest sauce. It was served with white rice. Very large portions. Also shrimp chow fun. Very large shrimp and plenty of them with wide noodles and bean sprouts. I can't believe I forgot to take photos. Only took one of my cup of hot & sour soup. I forgot because I was hungry and the food was yummy! Amy boxed up our leftovers and served us each a little cup of orange jello with our tab. Stumbled upon this restaurant out of the blue. It's definitely a local joint, you'd probably only know about it if you lived in the area as I've lived a few freeway exits away and had no idea it existed. My review is for their take out so I cannot comment on the running of this restaurant if you are a sit down patron or comment much on the decor but I feel like I've got the idea of the food, pricing, takeout, and service when checking out. Being a local dive Chinese restaurant it does feel comfortable when you walk in, no frills. Calling in my order the lady at the front desk was pleasant to speak to on the phone, she took my order correctly, and gave me a correct estimate on when the food would be ready. Overall my experience with their employees was 5 stars- friendly service and everything was correct which can be tricky at some places when ordering take out. Price- for lunch it is extremely reasonable. For $8 a lunch combo includes the protein, rice, soup, egg roll, and potsticker (and that only for take out!) if you order in they give you even more sides like fruit and salad. How can you beat that much delicious food for $8? Unheard of.... Food: a fair 4 stars for divey Chinese food. See below.... The dish that exceeded my expectation was their shrimp with lobster sauce! I've struggled to find anywhere in Ventura county/over the grade that has good shrimp with lobster sauce but this place has it! Huge portions of shrimp and the consistency of the sauce was perfect, thick like it should be and not watery like other places do. The dish that bumped my review down to a 4 star was the Kung pow chicken. Portion size was good and the flavor was pretty good (not amazing) but the turn off was the rubbery sub par chicken used. For the price it wasn't bad but definitely B quality chicken that wasn't super appetizing to me but I'm picking with chewiness on chicken. Needs to be cooked well through and white meat, not the dark grissly kind you find at most Chinese places. Over this place is a good hole in the wall to fill your take our cravings at a good price. I'll be honest. I haven't had Chinese food in 8 years. It's not really my fave. I like sushi, In-n-Out and Holdren's, and that's about it. Hubby wanted Chinese food, so I went to Hunan. I have to say, it's was really delicious. I was sad bc there there NO ONE in the restaurant and a line out the door for the sushi restaurant around the corner. We had moo shi pork, sweet and sour pork, broccoli beef and pork fried rice. It lasted us for two dinners and a lunch for hubby. I will certainly go there again. It's owned by a nice couple. Solid and consistent food for the value. We have been customers for 25+ years and they know us and treat us like family. They go above and beyond by happily preparing our food with no MSG, carefully packing our entrees to go, and even returning our tip when they thought it was excessive!
