Another delicious meal from Sesame Inn! We've lived in the Suntree neighborhood in Newbury Park for 23 years, and have really enjoyed food from Sesame Inn (3327 Kimber) recently. Sesame Inn was owned for a long time by Jennifer and Paul, but went through two changes of ownership once they retired. A new couple, Ling and Shao Yung, now own Sesame Inn, and have kept the original recipes. The restaurant is currently carry-out only. Ling handles the phone and Shao Yung runs the kitchen. They're delightful! We've ordered most things on the menu (including the "secret" menu), but keep gravitating towards our favorites. Whenever we have out-of-town guests that have been here before, they always ask for carry-out from Sesame Inn. - 5 stars! read more

We used to stop in here for their great food and service, but it seemed to have fallen short on the quality of food and their service recently. The shop has a few small tables situated, but found the floors dirty in multiple places and the overall smell was just not pleasant for such a small place. The table service was handled by an older woman, who may have been the manager. She was rude and curt towards us. When we were finished with our small bowl of the Asian style crunchy noodles and smaller bowl of duck sauce, we asked for more, and she informed us that we would have to buy a bag of noodles for $7 dollars. This is after we were seated and ordered our dinner. The orange chicken was over-fried and lacked taste, while my sweet and pungent shrimp was super soggy, almost relying on the sauce to act as the seasoning. Our pot stickers were ok .. but not great. They also had little to no flavour / seasoning .. and were dried out .. possibly over cooked, as well. I'm unsure if new management acquired this business, but it was not this way a few months ago. Seems like this place is beginning to penny pinch on the small things to save/make a few extra bucks. I so hope this place improves or turns around as I will check in now and again for good news! Worst Chinese food in the Cornejo Valley. I ordered a few dishes and the total was almost $70. What did I get for so much money? Cashew Chicken = Was almost entirely vegetables and a few scant pieces of chicken. Twice Cooked Pork = 90% cabbage with a few pieces of pork for flavor. Vegetable Pan fried Noodles = Looked like it had already been digested. I'm not even a picky customer but this food was beyond terrible. I'm astonished at how bad a food experience it was. read more

So I can confirm ... the vegetarian egg fu young is prepared exactly the same and I would recommend it. NOTE: Take out and delivery only. No more dining in. Vegetarian Egg Foo Young / Lunch ($11.45, grade A) - I like how they prepare this dish. Almost like little dumplings. Allows for more crunchy outter edges. Egg roll (Grade C) The lunch special comes with a vegetarian egg roll. The egg roll tastes like the frozen ones from Costco. I eat the ones from Costco occasionally, but not preferred when I eat out. Egg Fried Rice (Grade B) The lunch special comes with this as well. It's a small scoop of fried rice. I liked the flavor, but wish the portion was larger. I ran out of rice before I ran out of meal. Bottom line - I do recommend the vegetarian egg foo young. I usually order the full dish and not the lunch special so that's probably a better way to eat this. If you really like texture, ask for the sauce on the side. read more

For quite some time, this place fell off our radar. No reason for it, but it did. Recently, though, it came back on, and now, we're going almost weekly. Okay, maybe every other week. Not only do we enjoy their food, but we usually get THREE meals out of each order. They serve huge portions, and truth be told, we order A LOT of dishes. So delicious and so much fun !!! Now we're addicted. Please know that while I love Chinese food, I won't eat at 99% of the restaurants. The reason is because I can't trust them with the MSG and/or any other preservative. I CAN trust Sesame Inn, though. Not only do they prepare their food extremely well, but I can trust what they put or don't put in their foods. The proof is in my reaction to it. If there are preservatives, I will know within minutes because I get insane headaches and sometimes fall into a sleep-like trance. Very weird and awful. So if a restaurant puts them in, I WILL KNOW. Sesame Inn is what I call, VERY CLEAN food, and it tastes incredibly delicious. Plus, they give huge portions and lots of each ingredient in each. If they say it has shrimp, there's LOTS of shrimp. If it says pineapple, you'll see loads of pineapple... and that's for all ingredients, no matter what. You get the idea. I think my FAVORITE dishes are: Family Delight - chicken, beef, and shrimp sauteed with broccoli and Chinese pea pods in Mandarin sauce; and Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. Before covid the food and service was great and consistent. We just ordered and everything lacks in flavor. It no longer has much of authentic chinese food experience its fast food. Prior to the sale of the restaurant to another party, the food was delicious. It was a talk of the town and everybody ate there. Now the business has no customers, no busy lines, no full parking lot. Unfortunately, the menu does not taste the same the egg foo young dish always comes come out burned. I have even asked the person placing my order to please ask the person cooking the dish, not burn the dish however it comes out burnt every time. read more

We were wanting good Chinese the other night while in town, and Sesame was at the top of the list for the neighborhood. We had it delivered. I ordered a few different dishes so my group could pick and choose as it liked. Our food arrived at its expected time, hot and packed professionally. A couple of orders of the egg rolls, along with an order of pot stickers as appetizers and then an order each of Beef with Broccoli, Orange Flavor Chicken and BBQ Pork Fried Rice they were all good. Each had its own merits the Orange Chicken was my favorite of the three, followed by the Pork and rice. The potstickers were very tasty and cooked beautifully and the eggs rolls cripsy and flavorful. Delivery is a buck forty nine, cheap when fuel is at all time highs. Our food was at our front door on time as promised and the food was very good. A little amazed by 1 Star reviews whining about delivery or a minimal fee? in this day and age? ...Anyways, you get the idea. The best Chinese food in the valley hands down! Shrimp fried rice, chicken chow fun, and chicken with broccoli are always a hit. Hope they could be more generous with the hot mustard, hot oil, etc. they recently moved to ketchup like packets for hot mustard which is pretty sad. read more

This was a delicious meal of sesame chicken and fried rice. I also ordered the spare ribs and wonton soup, which were very tasty. It is a shame that they don't have sit down service at the restaurant because they have nice booths. The cashier was extremely accommodating to my dietary restrictions. Sesame Inn is a staple in the area for my Chinese Food take out. I've never dined in but I've ordered their food plenty of times & they've never disappointed. The pricing is reasonable here & they package their take out carefully. That's important to know when reviewing a place for delivery! Lol. Nothing worse then a sloppy mess when your getting food delivered and Sesame Inn takes good care of your order and packages it with care. So no worries there! We have been ordering from Sesame Inn for over 10 years. By far, this is one of the best Chinese take-out in Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks & Agoura hills. The Family Chow Fun beef is just that. It has so much flavor, protein for 2-4 people. We also enjoy Mongolian chicken & beef. The container is filled to the top. The scallions & yellow onions melt in your mouth. My favorite has always been the orange chicken. The sauce is just the right amount of sweetness & a bit of spice to make it mouth watering. We especially like that they give you white or brown rice at no charge. When you phone in your order it's professional. The service when you arrive to pickup is so helpful. read more

Used to go here all the time when previous owners, Jennifer, owned it. The new owners seemed to continue the recipes and quality for some time but now it has slowly been going downhill. Ordered one of our past favorites which was Chicken Chow Mein with crispy noodles. This dish used to be mostly bean sprouts but is now what I would say at best is Chicken Chop Suey. The package of crispy noodles was once again completely stale. When I was notified the order was ready, there was nobody up front and basically just picked up the package and left undetected. Luckily I was parked outside so it couldn't have been taken by someone else. It sucks this has happened to this location. Will try the one in Camarillo instead next time I am down there. read more

The best Americanized Chinese food in Los Angeles since Fu-Shing in Pasadena closed five years ago. Hands down! Truly excellent. It's like NYC Chinese food. Located in a strip mall a million miles away in Thousand Oaks, it's a place that makes me contemplate the drive from the SGV for an hour and a half every week. The food is simply exquisite. The potstickers were okay, but they are chicken instead of pork. Pork, please. Still very good. The Shrimp Szechuan Style (garlic sauce) is the first garlic sauce I've found in Los Angeles, after hundreds of restaurants I've tried in LA since 1994, that is a real NYC garlic sauce. OMG! The kung pao chicken is white meat and amazing. The BBQ Pork fried rice was terrific. There are only like 9 four person tables in the small joint, but the service is friendly and attentive, and there was a steady stream of locals stopping by to get take out, so obviously people in Thousand Oaks love this place. Small restaurant with attentive waiters. However, from a 626/San Gabriel Valley native, this is "A-OK" restaurant for me. Wonton Noodle Soup (1.5/5): The Wonton soup is not like anything I've tried - it's very confusing. Please don't expect this to be your standard Hong Kong style wonton mein. They only give 4 very small wontons with the very thick flour. Moreover, the soup base was very thin and had no depth feeling to it, noodle isn't egg noodle or ho fun but it was something else that you would probably find in Taiwanese style Beef Noodle Soup? The toppings themselves were unnecessary - char siu, mushroom, chicken, shrimp, American broccoli, and napa cabbage. All of this probably made the expensive price point of ~$10. Beef Ho Fun (thick white noodle) with Soy Sauce (3.5/5): Not bad! Reminded me of home. At least it was recognizable with the usual brown colored wide noodles. Beef was well cooked and flavored. But, overall it was a bit bland at the same time? Though they did not drown the noodles in soy sauce unlike other places. I would probably stay away from the noodle section and would check out the entrees themselves. read more

This place is very convenient for me as it is right around the block from where I work. I went for the first time about a month ago. I ordered the beef soft noodles and the potstickers. The beef soft noodles tasted good, but also very oily. The beef was delicious though. It wasn't too chewy or dry. The potstickers were a bit disappointing for me. They looked like they would be crunchy on the bottom (which is how I like my potstickers to be), but they were a bit soggy. This could be from the to-go packaging, but I was a bit disappointed. As for the price of the food, I think the beef soft noodles were within reason. That cost about $11. The potstickers cost about $9, which I think is a bit overpriced, and with the quality of the potstickers contributed to my opinion of it being overpriced. The restaurant did not provide utensils for the to-go order. As someone who likes to eat Asian foods with chopsticks and someone who has been too lazy/forgetful to buy chopsticks, it is a little disappointing to eat my food with a fork. The packaging was okay. Nothing spilled and the food was kept warm. I do have to say that the restaurant's website is very easy to maneuver (compared to other restaurant's sites). Each food dish has a great description, so finding what I wanted or reading what the dishes entailed was very easy. I reserve 5-stars and rarely give it out. Not because I'm scrooge, just because the restaurant has to put out some efforts in a form of several combinations. In this case, this is a "little mom & pop" family ran Chinese restaurant, in a remote shopping center of a township like Newbury Park. Literally a few mile off 101 Hwy across the city of Thousand Oaks. So it basically has 90+% return customers. No one else is going to go out of their way to give this place a try. But if you ask me, they must! My family I have come to this place numerous times. When we have close family visiting use from out of town, I find a way to treat them to this fabulous place and allow my wife to have a break from cooking and hosting. As I was saying above, the restaurant puts out delicious Chinese food, a whole variety of it, and it is ALWAYS CONSISTENTLY, tasty and plenty. We look forward to our left overs when we order their family styles or our own individual plates. Their chef's special dishes are some of the best. The owners/servers are always happy looking, smiling, and give your full and uninterrupted attention. From the moment you walk in, during your meal, and as you pack those take home boxes and pay your bill. The sitting is very limited and tight. You can also seat outside, but still limited. But we have never waited too long and you'd be amazed how much take out orders, that little place with a small kitchen, which I have visited in one occasion (will tell you why below!), can make tons of food. And your food is always made to order, served hot, and in a timely manner. There is only one minor down side to this place, be sure you have no need to use a restroom. Because that one time I had to use it and wash my hands, the owners very nicely allowed me to walk thru their very small and busy kitchen to the back of the building where I used the facilities, really intended for the workers. But there was no place to wash my hand and the owner showed me the big sink meant for washing dishes or rinsing stuff off. Thats where I washed my hands. Anyway, this one memory aside, We have had numerous great visits here and their food, prices, and service combination for what should be expected of a small tiny place like this in a remote shopping center gives them a deserving 5 star and we will go back again whenever craving Chinese food and are in that area. read more
