Just because and always fun!

Found a hidden gem, friendly service, delicious sizzling rice soup with chicken, pork and shrimp which feed 2. We also tried the cashew chicken and brought the good memories of the old school flavors we grew up on. Enjoyed the large pot of jasmine tea and the fortune cookies to bring back the nostalgia.

We moved to Central Coast Ca almost 2 years ago. We love the area! There is one thing missing though. No good Chinese restaurants! We have searched high and low, from Santa Maria to San Luis Obispo with no luck. As a matter of fact, you can read one of my reviews and see how badly a restaurant flunked out, In my humble opinion. Enough of that. When we lived in Newbury Park we had a favorite, go to restaurant that we always went to when someone in our family was sick. "Sick" could mean a cold or flu , but it could also mean I had a bad headache and called in sick for cooking dinner. No matter what, my son was always first in line requesting Red Wok? With a hopeful expression. Well, with our move and my son moving out those days were behind us... UNTIL! Drum roll please! I had an epiphany! When I need to come to Thousand Oaks, why not order what we love, put it in an insulated bag that we already have, and bring it home! Instant excellent food! So we tried it and it worked! Now having to drive to Thousand Oaks won't bee so bad. As for the food you can get here, everything is made fresh. I loved the wor wonton soup! House special noodles, kung pow chicken, broccoli and beef, shrimp with lobster sauce, the list goes on and on. You can eat there, it's a simple place, not fancy, or take it to go. Don't be put off by the older lady, she seems gruff, but the chef is great.

Our favorite pho place was closed today so we wanted to try something new and loved it here. The service was awesome and the food was delicious. The prices were actually unbelievable and the portions were pretty good. Definitely will be back and really glad we got to check out this place.

I have seen this place for decades and some reason went next door to the Alamo but not there. I gave it a shot when I wanted shrimp fried rice and my usual go to place was closed. A A friend and I went to try it out, both of us were virgins. We ordered the eggplant with tofu, shrimp fried rice, pork egg foo young, chicken with vegetables, beef with snow peas, and chicken dumplings. The server explained that the dumplings are made in house, along with their egg rolls. Big difference from those restaurants that uses factory created. Wow they were huge, the filling was delicious and the texture of the dumping was fresh. I love dim sum, and this place questioned the quality of those places I was going too. Will be asking if things are made in house next time I go elsewhere. Ordering to delivery of the food took some time, but they cooked to order, which I appreciate. The above food order, I would get again and try out more of their options. I heard they have been open for 20+ years, congratulations to them and continued success.

For a "Let's find dinner while we're in Newbury Park", we did well. Good service, good prices, (though we couldn't get their menu to load on Google Maps or Yelp), and large portions. These pics show the dishes AFTER we've already eaten some. A quiet (we went on a Sun. afternoon) place, but near other restaurants so competition for parking.

Another delicious meal from Sesame Inn!…read more We've lived in the Suntree neighborhood in Newbury Park for 23 years, and have really enjoyed food from Sesame Inn (3327 Kimber) recently. Sesame Inn was owned for a long time by Jennifer and Paul, but went through two changes of ownership once they retired. A new couple, Ling and Shao Yung, now own Sesame Inn, and have kept the original recipes. The restaurant is currently carry-out only. Ling handles the phone and Shao Yung runs the kitchen. They're delightful! We've ordered most things on the menu (including the "secret" menu), but keep gravitating towards our favorites. Whenever we have out-of-town guests that have been here before, they always ask for carry-out from Sesame Inn. - 5 stars!

The shop has a few small tables situated, but found the floors dirty in multiple places and the overall smell was just not pleasant for such a small place. The table service was handled by an older woman, who may have been the manager. She was rude and curt towards us. When we were finished with our small bowl of the Asian style crunchy noodles and smaller bowl of duck sauce, we asked for more, and she informed us that we would have to buy a bag of noodles for $7 dollars. This is after we were seated and ordered our dinner. The orange chicken was over-fried and lacked taste, while my sweet and pungent shrimp was super soggy, almost relying on the sauce to act as the seasoning. Our pot stickers were ok .. but not great. They also had little to no flavour / seasoning .. and were dried out .. possibly over cooked, as well. I'm unsure if new management acquired this business, but it was not this way a few months ago. Seems like this place is beginning to penny pinch on the small things to save/make a few extra bucks. I so hope this place improves or turns around as I will check in now and again for good news! Thanks !

Love Mandarin Bistro. Amazing food. Great people who work there. Today they were running a bit…read morebehind and they were super apologetic. No biggie - patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you had in mind. I had to write a review because I knew one particular person was going to tarnish them because they didn't have that patience. As I suspected, he did. See the other review entry for today. It's definitely him. Let me share with you the chain of events I witnessed that allowed me to connect the dots so I can likely assume was him. With us other patrons waiting so patiently, because again, the manager was sharing with us how they were looking and was super apologetic. One can only tell you 10-15 mins but hey I knew I wasn't the only one there. Except for this guy who believed he was the only patron and should have been waited on hand and foot. He says 45 mins. I call BS. I was there. At the end of it all, he and his party walked out because 10-15 mins in a restaurant with patrons eating in and taking out was "too long." Thank goodness. Plus his attitude to some of the patrons was gross. The cherry on top was he was honking his horn to Mandarin Bistro for some reason as he was driving away. Um ok? In conclusion to that fool, YOU want private dining, stay your ass at home. For the rest of the Yelpers, if you want amazing chinese food while supporting small business in Newbury Park, I highly recommend Mandarin Bistro with utmost enthusiasm!

My faves are the salt & pepper egg tofu and fish fillet with ginger and scallions. Sooo delicious…read more Everything I've ever tried has been so yummy. I love the staff! Cheerful and efficient. I'm definitely a fan.

Here are…read morea few dishes I am happy to recommend: spicy diced chicken, sweet and sour chicken, sechuan fried green beans( this one has a lot of garlic), sechuan braised pork with buns, kimchi fish( request non spicy if you don't eat hot peppers). There are many other options on their menu, feel free to explore. My kids are picky eaters but they absolutely love the Chinese food from here. I of course enjoy the authentic sechuan flavor being Chinese myself. The restaurant is kept tidy and clean, if you want a dine in experience I recommend you to make a booking, walk-in is very welcome but keep note that sometimes it gets really crowded. They have frozen handmade dumplings for sale too if that's something you want to look into.

Was surprised to find such an authentic spot for Chinese in Oak Park!…read more I came by for a Mother's Day lunch with my family. When we arrived around 1 pm, the restaurant was maybe half full. But clearly it was popular as people were coming in constantly the entire time we were eating. Even though the restaurant is called Yunnan Restaurant, most of the dishes on the menu were more like Sichuan dishes i.e. spicy. All of the food was super solid and portions were ginormous. My recommendation is to order 1 dish per person if you want leftovers, or order one less dish than the # of people if you want to finish most of the food. I don't handle spice very well, so we ordered a mix of spicy and non-spicy dishes. We shared the following: #1 Yunan rice noodles ($16.99) #32 scallion pancake ($8.99) #104 Chong qing fried chicken ($16.99) #107 braised pork belly with buns ($19.99) #109 boiled two items - fish and duck blood ($21.99) Given that the restaurant is called Yunnan Restaurant, we felt like we had to order one of the most popular dishes from that region, the Yunan rice noodles i.e. crossing the bridge noodles. I really enjoyed the silky smooth mixian noodles as well as the flavorful broth. The fried chicken was too spicy for me; I ate one piece and my whole mouth was on fire. Everyone else said it was quite spicy as well, so eat this in moderation unless you can really handle your spice. The 3 pepper signs next to this dish on the menu are no joke! The braised pork belly was delicious, but portions were on the smaller side for this one. Still, I enjoyed making a little bun sandwich with the pork belly and pickled veggies. The boiled fish and duck blood was also super solid. It was just a little spicy, so I was able to manage a couple pieces with the help of rice on the side. Portions were very generous for this dish. We all ate lots of fish and duck blood and still had a ton left to take home. They also have some precooked 涼菜, i.e. cold dishes, on the side you can buy for dine-in or to go. We got 3 of the meats - pork tongue, pork head, and and beef tripe, to go. Paid $16.99 for a huge box of these meats. We thought this was a steal too. Can't wait to try some at home!
